Heero gulped again. This time harder than before. He could see Duo's grin spreading over his face in a way he *definitely* didn't like. Feeling his cheeks redden he turned his gaze away and stared at the ground.

"Oi, it can't be *that* bad, ne? You know, you can tell me *everything*! I'd tell you about my dream if you asked me to, no matter what it was about."

[Really? You haven't told me about your nightmares. ... On the other hand... I never asked, did I?]

Heero squirmed a little where he sat, mind racing.

[I have to get myself a little more time! But how? Kuso!]

What could he ask Duo that he didn't know yet and won't upset or make the bright smiling boy sad? He loved the way Duo smiled, his sadness vanishing with every day he was staying at the senator's home, talking to *normal* friends, leading a *normal* life, having some kind of a *normal* family. Heero hated the fact that he reminded the chestnut-haired boy of the mission, wishing he could make him forget every bad thing that had happened in the past. He wished he could make them both forget that he was the Perfect Soldier and Duo the God of Death.

But that was what Duo wanted him to do, wasn't it? By asking little questions about his life, his innermost feelings, even his most embarrassing secrets, making him blush every time he smiled that marvelous upright smile he had made him somehow forget who he was and what he was doing. It was some kind of wonder that they were sitting here on a bright spring day, protecting the peace they had fought for with their lifes and finally gained over a year ago. Yet the peace wasn't stable and that was why they were working for the Preventers right now. There was always a mission to be accomplished, ne?

[Thinking of the mission...]

"How do you manage it?"

Duo blinked at him, totally surprised.

[Kuso. How I love these big bright eyes of his!]

"How do I manage what?"

"How do you stay so cool with all these... how'd you say... hot girls surrounding you? Isn't that some kind of... distracting?"

When Heero thought Duo's eyes couldn't get *any* bigger he was proven false now. Duo stared at him for a few seconds in disbelief, then smirked. Heero could see a slight blush forming on the soft cheeks.

"Every morning, when I shower... I... masturbate."

Now it was Heero's turn to stare at his friend in surprise, eyes as wide as Duo's had been seconds before.

"It was on my first day at school here... We had PE and in the changing room... All these ...hot girls... Luckily it was the last period we had that day... I had to stay in the toilet until the last of them had gone home...," he smiled a sheepish grin. "I was as hard as rock and it *really* hurt! I vowed that it wouldn't happen again. There was only one way that came into my mind. It was some kind of: when there's no tension, nothing's gonna happen... {1} So I... I do it while I shower so no one hears me..."

Heero couldn't stop the picture that was forming in his mind. Duo, soaked and naked, standing in the steamed shower, covered by wet, brown locks that almost reached his knees, jerking himself off with one hand while the other arm was supporting him on a tiled wall, mouth slightly opened, moaning and groaning silently now and then so that no one would hear him, face blurred with pure bliss.

Heero was almost panting from the thought of it alone. Needless to say that his trousers felt too small again all of a sudden.

Abruptly he got to his feet, staring straight forward and said with a cold tone that masked the heat inside him, "I dreamt about having sex," and headed back to the castle-like building.

Duo's eyes were about to pop out of his head. Heero Yuy, the Perfect Soldier, the emotional ice-block, was thinking about sex? Even picturing having it? That was too much for Duo and he would have laughed if it hadn't been this *odd*!

He sat there in silence and startled as if Heero had just announced another war.

/That wouldn't have me surprised as much as Heero having sex in his dreams! He only had his first *kiss* yesterday!/

He jumped up and ran after his best friend who was still walking away and almost screamed.

"Hey, wait for me!"

"Hn."

"Who's that girl of your dreams? Relena?"

The blush on Heero's face deepened. "Partly," he answered, feeling very uneasy.

Duo smirked. "Which part?"

Heero's blush deepened even more as he mumbled quietly, "Her breasts."

Duo thought his ears betrayed him. Did he just hear what he heard? He wasn't entirely sure and Heero was just so much fun to tease. "What did you say? I think I didn't get it right."

"Duo," Heero growled, glaring.

"Please tell me," Duo teased with his sweetest voice, putting up his best puppy look. "Pretty please?"

"Omae o korosu!"

Heero saw Duo blinking in honest surprise. Then, much to his confusion, his best friend smiled as brightest as he ever had and said, "You haven't said that to me for a long time..."

Heero stared at him in confusion. Why did Duo's face lighten up that much by a *death* threat? Why, the hell, did he like it?

"I didn't need to..." he murmured.

"Will you?"

Heero looked up, still dazed.

"What?"

"Tell me, of course!"

Heero took a long time to read the lovely amethyst orbs that were beaming at him, questioningly. He took a second to bathe in the beautiful sight of them, framed by soft, curly bangs.

"Maybe some day."

As Heero continued to walk he could hear the frustration in the soft girl's voice behind him.

"Oi! Hee-.... Yuichi!"

Duo paused before he could say Heero's real name as he noticed that he was shouting so loudly that the guards nearby were able to hear him. He was surprised that Heero didn't tell him off for that. Maybe it was because he stopped himself in time.

"One more thing. How does this device in your mind work?"

Duo took one deep breath and grinned.

"I'll tell you when you tell me more about your dream."

Heero seemed to consider this for a short time. Then he said, "I can wait," still heading back to their current home.

Duo took another deep breath and let out a deep sigh of frustration before following.

~z~

Later that evening after another superb supper, Heero was sitting in his room, typing a short report of their current situation for Noin when he heard the shower next to his room going. Again.

Curious of what Duo might be doing, still recalling how good Duo's skin felt underneath his chin he finished his report, sent it and went to sneak into the other's room like he had before after he had turned off his laptop.

Surprisingly the door wasn't locked. Heero frowned. Duo may be a jester but he wasn't a fool. He would never leave his room unlocked if his cover might be blown. So Heero went in to lecture him off and locked the door behind him.

He headed straight for the bathroom where he found Duo, yet wearing his nightgown and bending over the bathtub, washing his hair.

[At least parts of what I imagined are true.]

Heero sighed a little because it was the least dangerous part of it. Duo turned his head to look back at him.

"Heero? What do you want?"

[Yes, Heero. What do you want from him?]

Heero caught himself staring at the kneeling person in front of him as he was standing in the doorframe. He wished Duo didn't wear this goddamn wide piece of cloth that was covering his lovely rear. Damn, he wished Duo wasn't wearing *anything* at all!

[Funny... It doesn't feel strange anymore... just... Does that make me gay?]

Somehow he remembered Duo's question and stared at the now smooth, non-curled mass of hair hanging in the bathtub.

"How do you get your hair curled?"

"Huh?"

Duo was a little startled by the blunt question but that was just Heero's way of asking. He grinned from where he was bending.

"It's as simple as this: I braid it."

He turned the shower on again to wash out the shampoo.

Somehow that made sense to Heero.

"So, the more firm your braid is the more curls you get, right?"

Duo turned the water off, squeezed some water out of his thick hair and reached for the towel he had put nearby. Standing up with his back aching like hell from his very uncomfortable position he looked at Heero who was still standing in the bathroom's doorframe.

"Hai. I have this heat-and-curl-thingie from Sally but I only use it for my bangs. It's quite complicated to use it, though."

He rubbed some of the wetness in his hair away with the towel when he heard Heero moving. From the corner of his eye he caught him getting another towel.

"Would you let me braid your hair?"

Totally taken aback Duo stopped toweling and Heero took over with a dry towel. His grip was firm but careful. It was a nice feeling getting a head-massage from someone who had such strong hands as Heero's. He was slightly surprised that Heero cared about his hair but he loved the feeling when he did. If it had been any other person, like his nanny for example, he would have stiffened and said he wanted to be alone. But with Heero he just relaxed, letting him caress his hair like it was his own.

He had long forgotten everything he could say in refusal and simply nodded.

When Heero was content with the dryness if the long chestnut strands he guided Duo to his bed and told him to sit there. Then he thought of the most efficient way to get as much locks as he could with a minimum of work. He discarded the thought of braiding possibly hundreds of tiny plaits as he was searching for a brush, a comb and hair-bands. It would take him the whole night and they *did* have school after all. So he decided to try something he had seen once on Relena.

Duo was slightly wondering what took Heero so long while he was sitting on the bed, his hair still a bit wet, hanging down his back.

"If you don't hurry up a bit the bed will be soaking wet! I still have to sleep in it!"

Just then he felt that Heero was beginning to comb his hair. At first he only used his hands, undoing the knots that had formed while the wash and the toweling. Trying not to hurt Duo too much he did it extremely careful and very, very slow.

"Heero, you can speed up a bit. It won't hurt me that much. I'm not made of glass. I won't break."

Duo was slightly surprised by the gentle treatment of his hair. His braid seemed to be Heero's favorite object to pull on back during the war. And now he was touching his hair as if it was the most precious thing to him.

Heero hesitated a little bit, considering if he could hurt Duo by being less careful.

He decided to give it a try and as Duo still didn't say anything or wince or squirm he let out his breath, not remembering that he was holding it. Then he took the comb and repeated what he had done with his fingers as careful as before.

Totally out of his normal behavior Duo just sighed and simply enjoyed the caress of his hair without saying a word. He didn't even think about anything as he bent his head forward so that Heero had better access to the ends of his long hair with the brush.

Having finished combing and brushing Duo's hair, Heero took a moment to admire the soft chestnut mane that was covering the whole of Duo's back before he picked up the comb a second time, dividing the mass into two halves. He placed the right half over Duo's shoulder and told him to hold it.

/What is he planning?/

Heero kneeled behind Duo, picking up three small strands from the top of the left half of his hair and started to braid them. With every new round he picked up some more strands and Duo got the idea of what he was trying to do.

Heero was scowling in concentration. He never thought this strange plait was so hard to make. Though he thought he was handling it quite well for it looked just like the one he had seen on Relena. He had decided to do two of them so he could get more curls. Duo just looked marvelous with his locks.

Suddenly he found that there was no more hair to pick up and he braided on normally. As he plaited lower he sat down on his legs, some centimeters more he had to move away from Duo and when he reached the end of the beautiful mass he had to get off of the bed. He fastened the plait with a black hair-band and went over to the second half, braiding it just like the other one.

This time it seemed even more difficult. Heero tried to make the two plaits look symmetric but somehow the hair didn't obey him. He had to undo it partly several times until it looked like he wanted it to. He was grateful that Duo stayed quiet the whole time, letting him do his work.

Even if he wanted to, Duo wasn't able to talk. He was lost in the sensation of Heero braiding his hair. The way he was moving his hands through the still wet strands told Duo that Heero wasn't doing this out of sheer friendship. His hand rested on his shoulder longer than he needed to, sending waves of heat through Duo's body that went straight to his heart and hitting something inside it that he thought he had long forgotten. He wished that Heero would never stop plaiting his hair.

But unfortunately it was over at that particular moment. Heero checked his work for the last time and muttered, "Perfect. Ninmu kanryou."

He allowed himself a self-confident smirk and was about to leave the room when he noticed that Duo was sitting still on his bed. Too still.

"What is wrong?"

He saw Duo wiping away something in his eyes.

[Tears?]

"Nothing... It's just... I never had pig-tails."

Duo beamed at him a tear-stained grin. He looked as if he was about to cry openly.

Heero was shocked. What did he do wrong? What happened to the ever cheerful Duo Maxwell he knew?

"Aya had pig-tails..." {2}

Heero's eyes widened in realization.

"Your first kiss?"

Duo nodded slightly, eyes filling with tears.

Heero sat down next to him, putting one arm around his shoulders. He didn't know what to do so he followed his feelings and squeezed the shuddering and sobbing mass in his arms reassuringly.

"It's okay. I'm here. Just let it out."

Duo started crying openly on his shoulder leaving a wet spot on his shirt. Heero felt as if he could start crying as well but he didn't let this feeling overwhelm him. He had to be strong for Duo. He had to be the rock he could cling to. So he just held Duo and squeezed his shoulder from time to time reassuringly. It was all he could do. He was not able to bring Aya-chan back to life. He was not able to bring the little girl and her puppy back to life. All the people he had killed, he was not able to bring any of them back to life! He was sad because every single one of them had died in vain. Even his worst villains had had the right to live! They were only misguided. There must have been another way instead of killing them!

Silently he vowed to himself that he would try with all his might to talk the senator out of *any* war-plans he might support just to stop Duo's pain. He placed little kisses on the still damp hair on top of Duo's head and felt that his friend was calming down as the sobbing subsided. When Duo had steadied he laid him back on his bed, wrapping him in the blanket and placing a feather-like kiss on the soft forehead as Duo fainted to sleep, worn out from his crying.

"Oyasumi, Duo-chan."

To be continued...
