Chapter Three: The picnic
Heero walked home slowly. He really wasn't in the mood to get home quickly. Quatre was going to be there, most likely trying to convince them to do something together. Wufei would be, well Heero didn't know what Wufei would be doing, since Heero had just started this bet, perhaps Duo had made his move already. And Duo, well Duo was going to be Duo, there was no way around that.
"Heero!" Duo called from the porch when he saw Heero starting to walk up the driveway. "There you are." Duo raced down the driveway and nearly tackled Heero to the ground. "We're going on a picnic tomorrow."
Heero blinked. "What?"
Duo grinned. "It's a perfect idea. We take Wufei to the lake on the notion of having a picnic and we can both take turns on him." Duo paused and grinned. "I hope you've make a move on him before then though because I have." Duo winked.
Heero rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I already did. Last night."
Duo blinked and looked at Heero as if he was trying to figure out whether or not Heero was telling the truth. Apparently he couldn't figure it out. "Really? What did you do?"
"I kissed him." Heero said simply.
"You WHAT?" Duo exclaimed. "I thought we were going to make sure that he didn't think something was up with you? I definitely would think something was up with you if you did that to me."
Heero shrugged. "Whatever."
Duo sighed. "You're starting to sound like me and that can't be a good thing." Duo decided to change the subject. "So how was your day at work?"
"Oh, you mean after you came in and made Neko think that I was going to leave the store?" Heero asked, anger evident in his voice. "What on earth made you do that Duo? Why did you make it sound like I was going to leave the store for good? That was uncalled for and now-" Heero took a deep breath and looked away. "-and now Neko's mad at me."
"So?" Duo asked with a shrug. "Who cares?" Duo put his arm around Heero and grinned. "You have me!"
Heero rolled his eyes. "You just don't get it." Heero pushed Duo's arm off of him and headed for the house, leaving Duo behind to stare at his departing back.
Heero sighed as he entered the house. It just wasn't that same with Duo. Sure Neko and Duo were both his best friends but Neko was just different. She was a girl for one and two, she listened to Heero when he wanted to talk about something serious and didn't try to make a joke out of it when it got too serious. Unlike Duo who couldn't seem to handle it when things got too serious.
Heero peered in the living room and say that Quatre and Wufei were sitting in there, watching some movie or another. Heero thought briefly about joining them but then went against it, he wasn't in the mood to be good company right now.
Then Heero's thoughts went back to the picnic that Duo had scheduled for tomorrow. Heero smirked, that was it! He could invite Neko to that, and explain to her about the real position he was taking at the preventer's. It was perfect!
Heero smirked. This was one of those times he was glad that Duo was his best friend. Simply because it made it that much easier to convince him that inviting Neko was a good idea.
Heero decided to go phone Neko now. Convincing Duo could be done later. After what Duo did, he owned him to let Neko come.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------
Duo grumbled as he packed the picnic basket. What on earth was Heero thinking? Inviting that girl to their picnic. It wasn't supposed to have someone else there. They were supposed to go off to 'get something' and leave the other person with opportunities. That would have ended the bet pretty much today. But no, Heero has to go and do something stupid like this!
Duo was still muttering to himself when Wufei entered the kitchen. Wufei raised an eyebrow at him and then shook his head, opening the fridge and taking out a couple cans of pop and putting it in the cooler that he was packing.
Duo ignored him and went on with his mental rant. This was not the time to flirt with Wufei, Duo was so not in the mood to do so. It would be a pitiful effort. Then again...it would give Heero an advantage over him during the picnic today because Wufei would be uncomfortable with him. Duo smirked, maybe that wasn't a bad idea. He really wanted to win this bet!
Then Duo looked up and realized that Heero had entered the kitchen too and that Neko was right next to him, they both had the backpacks with all of the picnic blankets, towels and such. Neko tried to flash Duo a smile but it came out wrong, hesitant even, and Duo realized that she was upset with him.
And if she was upset with Duo, she was definitely uncertain of Heero.
Duo sighed, this was getting complicated. In order to win the bet, he had to be someone else, someone who didn't know how to flirt or how to keep things subtle, to a point. In order to get Heero to move to the preventer's permanently, he had to be someone else, someone was mean and constantly tried to hint that things weren't as they seemed. Duo growled. He did NOT like this.
Duo looked up and growled. Look on the bright side Duo, he told himself, you get a lot of good things out of this idea, right? Duo looked at Heero and Neko, who weren't talking and then over at Wufei was staring at his feet, not knowing what to do. Duo shook his head.
What good things?
Duo snorted, this was completely not fair. He wasn't going to lose this bet! He knew that Wufei liked Heero more so he really didn't have to pretend to be stupid or not know how to flirt. He wasn't going to continue to lose Heero to this girl, just because Heero wanted to spend more of his time at the store, he knew that Heero was his best friend. So what on earth was he worrying about?
Duo looked at Heero and sighed. Maybe this picnic was going to be good for something else besides just the bet. It was about time that Duo talked to Heero about how he was feeling. Heero deserved to know and plus it might do Duo some good.
With that in mind, Duo's brain perked up and the well-worn smile returned to his place and he picked up the picnic basket, making sure that he had everything in it and then smiling at the other three.
"Are we all ready to go?" Duo asked.
Heero blinked, obviously wondering what had sparked the change in Duo's demeanor. "Yeah, we're ready."
"Good." Duo wrapped his arm around Heero's neck in a loose hug type thing and then lead him out of the room. "Then lets go." He looked back at Wufei and Neko and motioned for them to follow. "Come on you two, unless of course you two just want to stay here, alone."
Neko rolled her eyes and stepped up next to Duo, punching him lightly in the shoulder. "You wish! You just want to get a video of it." She seemed to have noticed Duo's change too and was now a little bit more comfortable with him.
Duo shrugged. "Maybe, maybe. But that's not the point."
Heero pushed Duo's arm off of him. "And after I went through all this lengths to make sure that no one was going to go on our picnic site. What a waste of my energy."
Duo smirked. "Eh, your fault. You should have wasted your energy on something better. I'm sure Wufei could have thought of some things for you to do." Duo winked at Wufei and Wufei blushed. Duo started laughing. "I was thinking of fixing your motorcycle Wuffie-man, what a perverted mind you have."
"Wufei." Wufei corrected instantly.
"Wufei, Wuffie, what's the difference?" Duo asked as they loaded the truck. "As long as I don't call you Wu-Wu, I think you're safe." Neko and Heero started snickering at that one.
"What's so funny?" Wufei asked hesitantly, trying to figure out if he actually wanted to know.
After a moment Neko decided to be the one to tell him. "Once, at the store, we were all talking about what you would name your-" Neko left a pause here for effect. "-and well we decided that you would most likely call it 'Wu-Wu."
"Wu-Wu?" Wufei asked in disbelief.
Everyone burst out laughing besides Wufei.
"Why on earth would I call it something so feminine? So weak? So-" Wufei began and then decided not to continue since it just seemed to make it worse because now the other three were practically rolling on the ground.
"Don't worry." Duo said, wrapping his arm around Wufei's neck now. "You should have heard what they decided I named mine."
"What did they call it?" Wufei demanded to know.
Everyone started laughing, obviously at the memory.
"WHAT?"
In the end, no one found out and they all just got in the truck, to drive to their picnic area. The atmosphere obviously lighter than it had been the whole day.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------
Neko and Heero completed the task of spreading out the picnic blanket and putting the basket on it to keep the blanket from flying with the breeze. Duo was watching from his position in a neighboring tree that he decided was just perfect to sit in and watch everyone from.
Wufei just watched everyone from where he was standing next to the truck, attempting to curse the radio into working. Damn thing always seemed to bust on him when he least wanted it to. Wufei sighed, gave it one more hit and then shrugged, going over to where Neko was now sitting on the blanket, staring into the lake.
"It's pretty." She said finally, breaking the silence that had overtaken all of them as they stared at their surroundings. "How did you find it Duo?"
"I didn't, Heero did." Duo snickered. "Sure, he was chasing me into the forest because I had just taken his towel and he was freezing but that's not the point."
"Sounds like something you'd do." Neko said simply and then stood up. "So, is anyone going to join me for the first swim?" Neko looked around and saw that everyone was avoiding her gaze. "What? Is there something wrong with the lake? Do little boys come around and pee in it?" Neko looked up at Duo and snickered. "Should have figured there was something more to your towel story Duo, did ya miss?"
Duo rolled his eyes. "No. That's not it at all." Duo growled. "I can't believe that you-"
"Joke." Neko said simply and then pulled her shirt over her head. "Whatever, you guys can suffer while watching me swim." Neko went to remove her jeans and saw that everyone was watching her and rolled her eyes. "Okay can we not stare at me?"
With that all three pairs of eyes were averted, finding the sky or the ground to be something of a little more interest than Neko.
Wufei took a quick glance at Heero. Heero tended not to wear his spandex anymore, something to do with the people at the store spending too much time staring at his ass. Now he tended to wear jeans. Not that they really made it any better. They were tight jeans and Wufei knew that when he bent over, you could still stare at the tightness of Heero's ass.
A splash told Wufei that Neko had jumped in the water but still Wufei's gaze didn't move. Heero had kissed him the day before yesterday and since then Heero had avoided Wufei at all cost. Was Heero embarassed about the kiss or was he regretting it?
If he wasn't doing either, than what was going on?
Heero's gaze turned to Wufei suddenly and Wufei turned away quickly, a blush rising in his cheeks. He hadn't wanted to get caught in his scrutiny but obviously he had. Wufei decided that this was an excellent time to join Neko in the water.
He quickly threw off his clothing and dived in. To find out that the water was freezing cold. Neko grinned as she watched him shiver.
"Don't worry, it gets better in a minute." Neko teased and winked. Then she motioned to the land and smiled. "Those two need to talk things out for a while anyways. Duo needs to talk to Heero about me."
"What do you mean?" Wufei asked with a frown. What was that supposed to mean? Were Neko and Duo going out?
"Duo feels threatened by me." Neko said with a shrug. "Not that I blame him, I did come in and practically steal his best friend from him." Neko sighed. "That's not what I meant to do though and Heero knows it. But Duo doesn't know it so well."
"Oh?"
"Did you hear about what happened the other day when Duo came into the store?"
"No." Wufei had sort of overheard something about the job at the preventer's but he wasn't sure exactly what had happened.
"Well Duo came in and told me about the job Heero had accepted at the preventer's." Neko said with a sigh and then splashed Wufei in the face. "You should at least know about that."
Wufei nodded, yes he had known that Heero was accepting the job to become their personal dog trainer but what did that have to do with anything.
"Well Duo told me about it but it didn't mention that it was temporairy." Neko's voice was cold. "He didn't tell me that it was merely a dog trainer's position either."
Wufei closed his eyes in shame. "I'm sorry about Duo, he just-"
"Wants to get Heero back." Neko interrupted. "I know that's what he's trying to do. I would try to do it too if I was in Duo's position. Duo's had everyone he's ever cared about ripped from him and he didn't want Heero to be that way too. He thought that if he got us fighting Heero's temper would take care of the rest." Neko shrugged. "I think that it might have if Heero and I weren't such good friends."
"That's still dishonorable." Wufei muttered.
"Yes it was." Neko agreed. "But I forgive Duo for it. Anyways, as I was saying, Duo and Heero need to talk things out. And I need to back it off, give them some time to themselves. I actually thought about not coming here today so that they could have time together but then I remembered the bet-" Neko stopped arruptedly.
"What bet?"
Neko waved him off. "It's just a stupid bet to see who can get the other more wet and I thought I might have to be here to supervise, you know?"
Wufei nodded and then grinned. "Well you were right."
Neko's eyebrow raised in confusion.
"The water is much warmer now."
Neko nodded in agreement. "Yeah."
"Should we head back in?"
Neko shook her head. "Not for a bit, they're still talking." Neko motioned to the sight of Heero and Duo sitting on the tree branch together, their heads leaning against each other, obviously deep in talk.
"Okay."
"So Wufei Chang, who do you like?" Neko said suddenly.
Wufei started to sputter. "What?"
Neko grinned. "Well it must be someone good from that reaction."
Wufei splashed water on her and shook his head. "I'm not going to tell you. I'm not Heero, I'm not your best friend and I'm not going to tell you who I like." Wufei shook his head, no way in hell. It most definitely was not a good idea to tell your crush's best friend who your crush was.
Neko shrugged. "If you tell, I will."
Wufei shook his head again. "How about not."
Neko shrugged again. "Your loss." Then all of sudden she grabbed for his hair and pulled the hair elastic out, letting Wufei's hair fall free. "You look good like that."
"Hey! Give me that back!" Wufei tried to grab the elastic from her.
"Nah, I don't think so." With that Neko made a dash for the bank. "HEERO! I GOT HIS HAIR ELASTIC!" Neko dashed out of the water and straight for Heero and Duo, they had stopped talking obviously and had probably watched the whole thing.
Heero and Duo just laughed though as they witnessed the chase Wufei was currently giving. Wufei glared at him. He was going to get all of them for this...how dishonorable!

{A/N: Okay that was weird! nods I think that it was a direct reflection of how it usually is with all of my friends except maybe two. You know, where you try to be serious and yet it doesn't work so you just start joking or something to break the tension. nods again
Well I hope you guys all like this because I sure had fun writing this chapter. Like I said though, it's kinda weird and I haven't figured out yet if there's a purpose for it or not. I like to think that there is, even if it's nothing more then setting the place for my next chapter giggles and what a chapter it'll be...if I get around to writing it the way I want to... Thanks to the three people (two from ff.net and one from mm.org) who reviewed me and I hope that more people too because I like knowing that people read my stuff nods

See ya around---Kimpisces}
