Chapter Two: The Bet
Duo sighed as he headed for his room. He had been positive that Heero was following him home but then he had turned around and saw that Heero had run away again. What on earth was wrong with Heero? It was just stupid how Heero seemed to take every second that he could to get away from Duo. What had Duo ever done to Heero to make him do that kind of stuff?
Wufei looked up from his book as Duo entered the room that he, Heero and Duo shared. "What's up?"
"What on earth is it that makes you know exactly when I'm feeling even a little bit bad?" Duo snapped at Wufei. Duo no longer tried to keep a mask up with his friends. Out of all of them, Trowa was the one that was fooled by it the most and that wasn't very comforting. "Is it something about the width of my smile. Do you imprint it in your mind and if it's a fraction smaller than it should be, do you just assume that I'm upset?"
"No." Wufei said simply. "It's the fact that we ask you how you are and you blow up at us. Notice how I said what's up and not what's wrong." Wufei smirked. "You just need to pay attention to what I say instead of making assumptions."
"Oh." With a defeated look on his face, Duo slumped down on the bed next to Wufei. "I see. I really shouldn't do that, should I?"
"No you shouldn't." Wufei agreed. "But there's nothing you can do about it so you might as well just swallow it down and live with it." Wufei put his bookmark in and then turned to Duo. "All right, so what's wrong?"
Duo bit his lip. He wondered if he should tell Wufei exactly what was wrong with him? What would Wufei say to him then? Just what would he say? Would he stomp out of the room? Would he lean over and admit to feeling the same way...
Duo shook his head to get rid of the images. "A lot of things." Duo said simply. He didn't ever lie and he wasn't going to start. There was a lot of things wrong with him. Just most of them had something to do with the pilot sitting next to him.
"Like what?" Wufei asked, looking up at Duo. "I can't help you if you don't give me something to help you with. I'm not magical and I can't read your mind. I can't turn you around, give you a massage and hope that you'll be all better at the end of it."
Duo couldn't help but moan at the thought of Wufei giving him a massage. When Wufei looked at him with a raised eyebrow Duo blushed. "I was..I was just thinking that maybe a massage would be good and...yah."
Wufei rolled his eyes and moved behind Duo, starting on a massage. "So name one thing that's wrong with you."
Duo tried to think of a safe subject to talk about. "You've said it yourself before Wufei." Duo said simply. "I'm useless. Everyone in this house thinks so. Heero refuses to hang around with me if he can help it and the same with you. Quatre is never around so I can never hang out with him even if I want to and well, Trowa is just someone who I don't feel all that comfortable hanging around with." It was something to do with the fact that he was friends with a lion and bearly ever said a whole sentence in a row. "And I just feel kinda like I'm worthless."
"You're not worthless." Wufei said simply. "No one here thinks so."
"We don't think so." A monotone voice repeated from the doorway.
Duo gasped and looked up. Had Heero heard that? Would Heero be upset that Duo thought he never wanted Duo around? Would Heero want to hit him? Or would Heero just return to his corner to pout about it?
"Duo?" Wufei asked. "You're tensing up again."
"Oh." Duo forgot that Wufei was massaging him and could feel when Duo was uncomfortable with something or another. "Sorry."
"Relax." Heero said simply and placed his hands on Duo's knees. Heero sat down and shook his head. "I'm not mad."
"You're not?" Duo's whole body relaxed at that. He didn't have to worry about Heero being mad. Nothing against Heero but he really could pack a mean punch when he was mad about something and Duo wasn't willing to get in Heero's fist's way, so to speak, if he could help it.
Heero shook his head and sat back against the wall. "I have been avoiding you when I can help it lately and that's because I just need time to think. Okay. You just have a tendency to be there when I need to think and that's why I have to go and avoid you. I'm sorry if you thought I was doing it because I didn't want to be around you because that's not what I wanted you to think at all. I just need that time to think."
Duo nodded and smiled. "Alright, thanks. I'm sorry that I doubted you."
"Eh, it's alright." Heero looked over Duo's shoulder at Wufei and frowned. "There's something wrong with you, isn't there Wufei?" Duo found himself gently pushed aside by Heero and then Heero moved in to look at Wufei closer.
Wufei blushed all of a sudden and got up, jumping out of the way of Heero's gaze. "I'm just worried about my new upcoming mission..." Wufei looked like a little kid that just got caught with their hands in the cookie jar. "Which reminds me, I got to go and phone Une about some of the details. I'll talk to you later." With that Wufei was gone.
Duo couldn't help but start to laugh. Heero shot him a look and leaned back. "It's not funny. There's something wrong with Wufei and he didn't start laughing at you when he realized that you had a problem."
Duo chuckled. "That's because I know what's wrong with Wufei."
"Oh?"
"I think he likes you."
A shocked look plastered itself on Heero's face. "No he doesn't." Heero seemed to be trying tor remember what had just happened and he shook his head. "No he doesn't."
"Yes he does."
"No." Heero repeated again, seeming to cling onto the familiarity and security of that word. But by the way he looked, it was obvious to Duo at least, that Heero had already known this and just didn't want to admit it out loud.
"I'm positive he does." Duo smirked. "If he didn't, why did he run away so fast when you started to look at him like that?"
"He was scared that you figured out that he liked you." Heero said carefully. "In case you didn't notice he was massaging your back when I came in. Trust me, he'd never do that for me, even if I did ask." Heero smirked, "I bet that's it!"
"No it's not." Duo said with a quick shake of the head. Duo looked at Heero and then grinned. "But I have an idea of how we can prove which one of us he does like."
"How?"
"Depends, wanna bet on it?"
"No." Heero shook his head. "I'm not going to be on something that has to do with one of my best friend's feelings. That's cruel Duo and you know it."
"I do. But I also know that it would be a quick way to figure it out."
Heero sighed. "I'm not going to."
"Well then, I'm not going to tell you my plan."
"Duo-"
"Heero." Duo said mockingly.
"Duo, this isn't funny. How would you like it if someone played with your emotions like I know you're planning to do to Wufei. It's not a game!"
Duo looked at Heero and grinned. "No, it's not a game but trust me, it'll help Wufei in the long run. I promise you Heero Yuy. And I don't break promises, you should know that."
"Then tell me." Heero said finally after a moment of silence.
"We have a bet. I win, you do my chores for a week and vice versa. I bet that you can get Wufei into bed before I do even if I flirt out right with him."
"And I'll flirt with him?" Heero shook his head. "Don't you think that he'll find that a little suspicious?"
"No." Duo said with a shake of the head. "You're not going to be flirting outrageously with him or anything. You're just going to be nicer and a little bit more, interested towards him. He'll pick it up, trust me."
"And if he doesn't."
"Then he'll definitely notice me and go off with me." Duo said simply. "Wanna bet?"
"Yes." Heero said with fire in his eyes. "I bet you that he likes you more." Duo laughed. "Oh Heero, you're so going down. The Shinigami is never wrong when it comes to this and he's not going to be wrong now. You can bet on it."
Heero smirked. "That's what you think."
------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------
Wufei sat in the safest place he knew of, 'his' treehouse. Wufei had made a treehouse a while ago for Duo but Duo had decicded that he didn't want it anymore. And it was the only place that he was sure neither Heero nor Duo would come and look for him in. Duo had once made a joke that Wufei spent his time in there worshipping his gundam (sure it was dead) and stuff. Wufei had glared at him and said that he spent his time in there remembering his wife.
No one had entered 'his' treehouse since.
Wufei thought back to what had happened just a few moments ago. Heero had been so close to him. Close enough for Wufei to smell the kind of soap that he had used this morning in his shower. Close enough that Wufei could smell that smell that had gotten Wufei interested in Heero in the first place.
The smell of sweat, gundam fuel, and something else Wufei couldn't put his finger on. The smell that was purely Heero and no one else.
Wufei sighed and shook his head. He was acting like a teenaged girl. At this rate, he was going to end up looking at Heero while playing with his own hair. That would just be unacceptable.
At that thought Wufei lifted his hands out to make sure that his hair was still in place and not down. Wufei caught himself and started chuckling. And it already begins...
"Wufei?" Wufei immediately recongized the voice as Quatre's. What was Quatre doing here? Wasn't he supposed to be at his office on Earth? He shouldn't be here.
"Yeah?" Wufei jumped out of his treehouse and looked at the blonde ex-pilot. "What are you doing here?"
"It's good to see you too Wufei." Quatre said with a smile. Then Quatre went and gave Wufei a quick hug, pulled back to look at him. "You look exhausted. You been sleeping okay?"
Wufei groaned. How could he be sleeping okay when all he could think of was a certain male that slept just a room over and could probably hear everything that went on in Wufei's room.
Quatre was waiting patiently for a reply, Wufei realized and returned Quatre's smile with a small one of his own. "I've been sleeping." There, that wasn't a lie.
Quatre shook his head. "You should just tell him you know."
"Tell who, what?"
Quatre didn't have time to reply because at that moment Duo and Heero appeared and there were more hugs exchanged. {A/N: I think because Heero believes in 'acting on his emotions' so I don't think that he would have much trouble hugging after the war was over so live with it people.}
"So? What are you doing here Q-man?" Duo asked, putting his arms around Quatre's shoulder and leading him inside.
"I actually got a week off of work and I thought I'd come and spend it with my friends." Quatre chuckled. "I've been busy lately and I haven't had the chance to hang out with all of you guys lately."
Wufei watched Duo and Quatre descend down the path and sighed. Good, he was alone! Then Wufei turned, right into Heero and realized that Heero hadn't left.
"Ready to go in with them?" Heero asked simply.
"I-I w-I wa-" Wufei took a deep breath. "I would like to stay out here for a little bit longer actually. I want to go and check up on the dog."
Heero chuckled. "Alright then, lets go. I'm sure Dog misses you."
Wufei growled. "You know, that's not his name."
Heero turned back. "Really? I could have sworn it was. That's all you ever call it, you know that? I've started to call him that myself. Though I think he does realize it's not his name." Heero seemed to go into thought for a second. "Maybe that's why it always takes him a little bit to respond."
Wufei growled again. "You know, you spend an awful lot of time with those dogs. Don't you have any girlfriends to go and hang around with? That Neko-onna and you are pretty close, aren't you?"
"Yeah but we're just friends, nothing more." Heero shrugged and started walking along the path towards the dogs. "Dogs seem to understand me more anyways. And they're so simple that it's pretty easy for me to figure out where I stand with them. Not like girls."
Wufei blinked. "What does that mean?" Wufei walked fast to catch up with Heero.
Heero shrugged again. "Girls are just more complicated, that's all. I never know if they're the kind that just want to cuddle and look up at me because I'm attractive or if they're the kind that only likes me because they know that I'm a war hero." Heero kicked the ground. "And I haven't found a girl yet that likes me because of who I am and just thinks those other things are bonus."
Wufei nodded, knowing exactly where Heero was coming from but not having realized that Heero had to deal with those kind of things too. "Yeah."
Heero looked over at Wufei. "Besides, you kinda of a hypocrite, aren't you? You don't have a girlfriend either Wufei Chang." Heero grinned. "Not that that's a bad thing."
Wufei blinked again. What on earth did that mean? Should he ask? Would that be walking into a trap?
Heero saved him from having to choose though. "There's your dog."
"Miroku."
Heero nodded. "Well there he is."
Wufei nodded to. "Yeah."
Heero leaned over and Wufei could feel Heero's breath on his ear. "Missed you Wufei."
Wufei jumped. What? Heero had missed him? But? When? What? Was this really Heero? What was going on? Heero was leaving him weird hints and Wufei didn't know how to interpret them anymore.
"What?" Wufei finally got out.
"I said he's missed you." Heero repeated simply and then motioned to the dog that was faithfully standing by the gate, looking at Wufei.
Wufei nodded and went over to the gate and opened it, slipping inside. Then he leaned down and began to pat his dog on the back and ran his fingers through the dog's thick fur.
Heero leaned against the fence and watched Wufei for a while. About ten minutes went by before Wufei got up and left the dog run. "Lets go."
Heero nodded and followed Wufei down the path back towards the house.
"Hey Wufei!?!"
"What?" Wufei turned to look at Heero.
Heero leaned in and gave Wufei a quick peek on the mouth and then made a dash for the house.
Wufei just stared after the running figure. Now he really didn't know what was going on??? Should he follow Heero and find out what was going on?
Yes! That was definitely what he should do now!
Without another thought, he followed Heero into the house. He found Heero waiting for him, right behind the door.
"What was that?"
Heero shrugged. "What? Didn't you like it?"
"What is wrong with you? That wasn't honorable! It isn't honorable to do that kind of thing to someone. It can't be honorable to do something like that to someone."
Heero shook his head and ran his hand through his hair, nervously. "Fine. It won't happen again."
Wufei started with a jump. No. No. NO! He hadn't meant that. It had been nice, warm, and a little too quick for Wufei's liking. He just didn't like not knowing what was going on...
Wufei didn't know what he was doing but in the next second he had slipped his hands behind Heero's head and brought their faces together. "To hell with honorable." Wufei pressed their lips together.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------
"Let me get this straight." Neko said as she waved to a frequent customer who was now leaving the store. "You made out with Wufei Chang, that hot Asian guy that has been in here a couple of times and yet you're still here?" Neko shook her head in mock disgust. "You should be at home! With him! In a bed!"
Heero shook his head. "No, that's definitely not a good idea."
Neko growled. "Oh yah, I remember why now." Neko turned and gave Heero a glare that was enough to give even him chills. "I can't believe you went and made that bet with Duo. I don't care how much help you're giving him in the long run. If he ever found out that that kiss last night had been mainly because you were in the midst of a bet with Duo-" Neko shook her head again. "That's just not funny Heero Yuy!"
Heero sighed. "I know that it's not." The door to the store opened, emitting one of Heero's 'fangirls' as Neko liked to call them. They came in here about three times a day, all just to pick up something they don't really need and so that they can talk to Heero and make sure that Neko isn't making out with him in the back room. "Hello Angel."
Angel grinned and waved to Heero. "Hi Heero-kun."
Neko chuckled. "Flirting with a fangirl now? What is with you lately. You've been flirting left and right, sheesh. Besides I thought you didn't want to be nice to Angel, might make her think you're actually finally interested."
Heero rolled his eyes and went to the backroom to get the boxes of stuff they had to shelf before leaving tonight. Might as well start now rather than later.
"Hello Duo." Neko's voice rang out sweetly. "You looking for Heero?"
Duo's voice laughed and Heero thanked whatever god was out there for letting Heero disappear into the backroom at that moment. "Yeah Neko, actually I am. But if he's busy then it's no big deal, I can talk to him any old time." Heero could imagine that Duo was in sunglasses, which he was pulling down his nose right now and grinning at Neko. "So, how have you been Neko?"
"Can't complain." Neko rang something in and then handed some bag or another to that Angel girl. "What about you?"
"Doing good. I finally convinced Heero to take up a job at the preventer's. He'll be up there soon, which is cool."
"Oh."
DAMN! Heero had forgot to discuss that with Neko. And if Heero had forgotten to discuss that with her, something so small, then Neko was going to think that it wasn't that small and that he hadn't wanted to talk to her about. Neko was going to think that Heero was leaving. For good.
"Yeah. Well I got to go, tell Heero I was around."
"Yeah, I will." Neko said softly in a non-Neko voice.
With that Duo left the store and Heero emerged from the backroom and put his hand on Neko's shoulder. "I'm not leaving the store." Heero said firmly. "I'm just going to take a break off, go and train Wufei and Duo's dogs and then I'll be back."
Neko shrugged. "What does it matter?" Neko looked up at Heero and Heero knew she was hurt about having to find this out from someone else first. "Just go and shelf those boxes. I'll hold the front." With that Neko turned away.
Heero sighed. This was going to be a long day from now on.

{A/N: Wow, a lot of things have happened in this chapter. First of all, the bet has revealed itself. Now you know just what's going on, well as much as anyone can at this point. You've seen the first stage of the bet (someone kissed someone) and you also saw the way that Heero and Neko interact. Pretty good for a second chapter lol
I just want to make somethings known to you guys. 1) No, this isn't going to end up being a threesome thing. I know what coupling I'm going to do and well, it may end up being a bummer to some people but eh, you'll figure it out. 2) No Duo isn't really mean. He just wants Heero to leave the store and go work at the preventers so that Heero can be his partner again. That's all. 3)Yes i know that this was a Heero-oriented chapter and now, for the next one, we'll focus more on Duo nods
Yeap that's about it. I hope you guys enjoy this chapter }

Yeap that's about it. I hope you guys enjoy this chapter }
