Chapter Five-Hospital Kiss
Wufei opened the door to his room slowly, trying not to wake anyone up with the sound. He couldn't sleep, he was nervous about his mission tomorrow. Plus, whenever he tried to get to sleep, the face of the all-too-perfect solider, popped up in front of him.
Wufei walked down the stairs and made his way in the kitchen. He was surprised to see that Heero was sitting there, sipping on some coffee, staring into space.
"Hey." Wufei whispered, knowing that Heero already knew that he was standing in the doorway so there was no reason for him to try and hide it anymore. "What are you doing up this late."
"I could ask you the same thing." Heero said simply, and motioned to the coffee machine. "There's some left for you if you want some."
Wufei nodded and went over to the machine, pouring himself a mug and then heading back to the table. "I'm nervous about the mission tomorrow." Wufei sighed. "There's a lot of details involved and it's going to take longer than I had hoped."
"How long?" Heero asked.
"About a month." Wufei said with a sigh. "I really really don't want to be on this kind of mission for that long. The longer you're there the more likely it is that someone will figure out that you don't belong there."
Heero nodded but said nothing more. After a few minutes of silence, Heero looked up at the ceiling and then back down at Wufei. "You'll be fine."
Wufei shrugged, not wanting to let himself believe that. Cockiness lead to mistakes. "The guy we're trying to capture is just a kid." Wufei shook his head. "What kind of things must he have done for us to know about him if he's just a kid."
Heero put his hand on Wufei's shoulder. "We weren't that old either when OZ began to worry about us. I'm sure a lot of people thought the same thing that you're thinking when they first heard about us." Heero squeezed Wufei's shoulder reassuringly. "Don't worry about it though, it'll be an in and out job, I'm sure of it."
Wufei rested his head on Heero's shoulder, sighing. "That's all we can hope."
"Stop being so down on yourself." Heero said sternly. "You can't be like that. It's like-" Heero fumbled for the right word. "-ginxing yourself or something like that."
"Jinxing." Wufei supplied and then smiled. "Yeah, you're probably right." Wufei turned his head and kissed Heero on the neck. "What about us?"
"Huh?" Heero asked, jerking away so suddenly that Wufei almost did a face plant.
Wufei sat up straight and cracked his neck before looking back at Heero. "I mean about all of this. The kissing, the comforting. You know...stuff." Wufei looked away, obviously uncomfortable. "What does it mean? Are we friends with perks, as Duo would say? Are we boyfriends? Something more? Something less? What?"
Heero pushed himself away from the table and got up, going over to the sink, not saying a word. Wufei followed him, leaning his head into the middle of Heero's back and just sitting there, waiting for a response from Heero.
"I really don't know." Heero said finally, and firmly. "We've only been doing this for a couple of days."
"What do you want us to be?" Wufei asked, his heart falling, thinking that maybe he had hoped too much, said too much, wished too much.
"I don't know that either." Heero said and turned around. "I'm going to go to bed. And you should do the same, you have a mission tomorrow. I'll see you when you get back."
Wufei did nothing as Heero walked out of the kitchen. What had he done?
------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------
People rushed past him, some guy was laying on a stretcher. Faint beeping sounds filled the halls accompanied by the rushing of feet, the crying of patients and families alike.
Duo looked over at Heero, who was sitting in the chair, no emotions crossing his face. It was as if they were back in the war. It was as if Heero and Duo hadn't became as close as they were and Duo was still afraid to talk to Heero. Well sort of afraid...afraid right now.
"Heero Yuy? Duo Maxwell?" The doctor asked as he stopped in front of them.
Both Heero and Duo nodded solemnly.
The doctor smiled down at them. "Well it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. The bullet was removed without any damnage. He has a couple of broken ribs but that's the worst of his injuries. He has a slight concussion so we're going to have to keep him awake for awhile and that won't help his recovery but besides that, I think he's going to be okay."
"Will we be able to take him home soon?" Heero asked solemnly.
"Since his injuries are pretty mild, I don't see why you can't take him tomorrow." The doctor said with the nod. "I'd let you take him home now if I didn't know it was standard procerure to keep a patient like this in over night."
Duo sighed in relief and could sense, even if it wasn't visible, that Heero had relaxed too. "Can we go and see him?"
"Normally I would say no." The doctor said with a shake of the head. "Both of you look horrible and you may concern him more than comfort him. But your superior told me that I had to let you in as soon as Wufei is stable." He sighed. "The things this world is coming to."
Heero and Duo looked at each other and then nodded. They followed the doctor in silence to the room Wufei was in and then nodded to him and went in. Wufei was sitting on his bed, looking at the door. He smiled when he saw them.
"I'm okay." Wufei said in a strained voice.
Heero nodded curtly, as if he hadn't even expected anything else and Duo grinned, boucing over to Wufei and giving him an enthusiasic, though gentle, hug.
"Thank god. When you went down like that-" Duo shook his head. "I don't want to even think about it."
Wufei hugged Duo back. "I'm okay." He repeated again and then his eyes drifted over to Heero, who was still standing in the doorway, wearing his 'war mask'. "Heero?"
Heero nodded in acknowledgement and then glanced around the room idly. Duo blinked, what was going on? Duo shrugged and then moved out of Wufei's embrace and patted the chinese teen on the shoulder. "Glad you made it Chang."
Wufei rolled his eyes, but the grin on his face made up for it. He repeated yet again, in an even firmer voice. "I'm okay!"
Duo shrugged. "I'm going to go get a coffee. You want one?" Wufei shook his head and Heero did too. "Alright then, I'll be back in a couple of-"
"You know what?" Heero said suddenly. "I think I do want something. I'll go and get it and your coffee Duo, you just stay here with Wufei.
Duo was stunned. Didn't Heero want to stay here, with Wufei? Duo blinked and then realized that Heero was waiting for his answer. "Um, yeah sure." Duo shrugged. "If you really want to go and get it, then go for it." Duo flashed Heero a smile and Heero nodded.
"I'll be back in five minutes."
Duo watched Heero go and then turned back to Wufei. "What was that about?"
Wufei looked down at the hospital blanket and sighed. "I don't know. I think he didn't want to be alone with me." Wufei looked back up. "Before we left, I asked him what was going on between him and me. He was shocked by the question to say the least and I think that I made him a little uncomfortable. And now-"
Duo put a hand on Wufei's shoulder. "Hey, don't worry about it. Heero probably just wants to think about it for a while."
"He's had awhile!" Wufei exclaimed. "We were gone for three weeks before this accident happened. He had three weeks to think about it! How much more time does he need?"
Duo sighed, pulling Wufei in for a hug. "Look, Heero's weird about that kind of stuff. He might have only started to think about it last night. He may have forgotten all about it before now. Or he may just not know how to say what he feels." Duo stroked Wufei's hair. "Just let it be for now. He won't avoid you forever. You two will eventually talk."
Wufei wrapped his arms around Duo and then looked up. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" Duo asked, confusion evident in his eyes.
"For this." Wufei answered and then placed a kiss on Duo's lips. "For not knowing that you liked me before. For leading you on."
"You didn't lead me on."
Wufei looked away. "Yes I did. I was weak, I wanted the attention you were willing to give me and I'm sorry."
"What?
"You do realize you stare at me a lot. I kinda, liked being admired by you." Wufei said with a chuckle. "And then that kiss in the elevator. I was confused about Heero at the time and well-"
"Oh." Duo said and then looked at the ceiling. "It's alright."
"No it's not. I'm sorry."
Duo leaned down and captured Wufei's mouth again. "If anyone's being stupid or weak, it's me."
Then they heard the chattering of mugs as they hit the floor and hurried, Duo let go of Wufei and they both looked towards the door. Just in time to see the 'perfect solider' walking as quickly as possible away from the door.
"Heero!" Wufei yelled after him.
Heero didn't even hesitate. Duo slumped down on the chair next to Wufei's bed. "Fuck."
------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------
Heero walked aimlessly around town, not knowing where he should go. What he should do. If he should go back and just tell them to go for it and that it had just came as a shock. If he should go back and punch Duo in the face for kissing his Wufei.
Heero shook his head. Wufei wasn't his. Wufei didn't want to be his. If Wufei wanted to be his then he never would have kissed Duo. Duo was the sexy, happy, make-everyone-feel-good kind of guy. Not Heero.
Heero didn't know how it happened but suddenly he registered that he was standing on Neko's doorstep. He sighed, he needed to talk to someone and who better to talk to than her? Heero knocked on the door and then waited.
"Hello?" Neko said, opening the door. "Heero? What's going on? I figured you'd be in the hospital still with Wufei." She opened the door wider. "Come on in, it's freezing out there."
Heero nodded and stepped inside the house. "Don't mind the mess, I was entertaining company earlier and they just left so I haven't gotten around to cleaning." Neko hurriedly went to the living room coffee table and began to clear things off. "Sit down, I'll get you some coffee."
"Thanks." Heero said and looked around. "Who was here?"
"My brother and his wife. Very nice people, he spends money on me everytime he comes over here. It works for me." Neko giggled and then brought out two steaming mugs of coffee. "So, what's wrong?"
"I was at the hospital with Wufei. I wanted to tell him what I thought about him and that I really wished we could take our friendship thing further but I didn't know how to. So I left him and Duo in the room while I went to get coffee and tried to figure out what to say." Heero sighed.
"Sounds reasonable." Neko's eyebrows were creased, obviously she didn't see what could possibly go wrong.
"Well, I came back, and Wufei was kissing Duo." Heero hung his head. "I didn't know what to do so I just walked away. Wandered around town for a while, didn't know what else to do. Then I ended up here."
Neko sighed and reached over, giving Heero a quick hug. "It's alright. Listen, it was probably just a misunderstanding. Maybe they weren't actually kissing. Or maybe it was all Duo's fault. He probably wants to get something out of this damn bet. Which I still think you should call off before Wufei finds out." Neko shook her head. "I don't know what happened in there Heero but I don't think that either Wufei or Duo wanted to hurt you."
"Neither of them know that I really do like Wufei."
"Good point." Neko sighed. "Listen, you want to stay here tonight? We could watch a movie, play a game or something to get your mind off of Wufei. You probably don't want to go home anyways. Duo will have to go back there sometime to sleep. Plus, a good night's rest might make this all better and clearer."
"Movie sounds good." Heero said with a nod.
"Good. You choose the movie, I'll get the popcorn." Neko went to the kitchen and Heero started to scan through her collection of movies. Heero sighed, he could only hope that Neko was right.
