Pain, all encompassing and unending; beyond it there was nothing, before it was beyond his mental grasp. Was there anything before the pain? He couldn't be sure, the pain held thought hostage causing his body to betray without fail. Time no longer had meaning; Minutes and hours replaced by the ebb and flow of pain, days and weeks by consciousness and blessed void.

There was no silence in his pain. They realized early on that silence did not bother him. It was all a lie; the silence would have worn on his nerves. Instead a menagerie of disembodied voices echoed off the concrete walls of his cell. They spoke a dozen languages fast harsh, others slow and smooth until they blurred and melted together. He didn't know why the voices were so soothing; Pain ruled drowning memory. Pain flared in his arm and he cried out.

“Tell us where they go to hide.”

Who did they want? He couldn't remember. He knew without a doubt that he couldn't tell them. Pain surged through his veins demanding that he tell. “No.” His voice was unrecognizable, hours of screaming leaving it raw.

Pain rolled white hot along his skin to pour into his mouth and nose. It choked him, burning everything it touched only to disappear just as it began. A blurred shadow entered his vision and more burning filled his eyes.

The captor's mouth was suddenly next to his ear, his poisonous voice riding the pain. “Answer the questions and the pain will stop.”

He hated himself for flinching, for the whimper that escaped his grasp. The pain laughed, taunting and mocking his weakness. It whispered dark promises of all the ways they could be together; he belonged to the pain. Still he tried to fight against it. “No.”

Pain engulfed him again. An icy blast, like a million daggers, along his skin; it ate at him, destroying him bit by bit before reassembling all the pieces. Before the arctic wave could end, more pain blossomed in his abdomen. A furious blow to his chest exploded with the sickening crack of breaking bone. The void wrapped him in its dark embrace and pain settled in, content to wait for consciousness.

He was a shadow, a piece of the night incarnate. Cloaked in silence and anger, Shinigami stalked among them. Fury burned in his violet eyes as he checked the computer. Within moments he had what he needed. Lips quirked in a dangerous smirk as he copied the information he needed and set his viruses. One callused hand caressed the thin detonator before he once again disappeared into the shadow.

Alarms and lights went off as he reached the holding area; his virus triggering the fire system. All around the building, electronic locks opened. People ran in all directions, careless of one stranger among them. Water poured from the fire system and started pooling on the floor making his footing hazardous.

He was surprised to see the door still closed as he reached his destination. More surprising was the line of locks down the door. They were simple locks, designed for strength rather than complexity. It took him less than a minute to remove all five giving him access to the target within.

A riot of light and sound assaulted his senses as soon as the door opened. A foam pallet pressed against the wall caught his attention, the creature there a shock. Pale skin stood in stark contrast to the glaring bruises while bones stood out in sharp relief where muscle should have been. Messy chocolate hair was matted and greasy.

“Heero!” exclaimed Duo softly.

The answering whimper nearly floored him as he moved to his partner side and the horror he found. Screams filled the air as soon as his hands made contact. After a moment he was able to make out words. “I won't tell!” They were running out of time; he scooped Heero up and began the mad dash towards their ride. They barely made it two halls over before Duo realized he had to do something; Heero's screams were drawing too much attention.

“I'm sorry love,” murmured Duo before knocking the dark haired man unconscious.

Duo cradled Heero's slight form as he rushed from the building. Luck seemed to be with them, no one tried to stop their escape. They were almost to the black sports car he had picked out when a voice started on the loudspeaker. He carefully settled Heero into the passenger seat and buckled him in. He didn't bother with his own belt, just threw the car into gear and sped away. Tires hit the asphalt of the main road and he gleefully pressed the detonator.

He pushed the powerful engine until he was sure they weren't being followed. As soon as he was able, he pulled his laptop and cell phone from the floor near Heero's feet. He jammed the laptop into the seat beside Heero and booted it up before hitting the first number on speed dial.

“02?”

“Mission accomplished 04,” replied Duo, “It's bad, I'm sending SP everything from their database. I don't know what they've done but its real bad. Tell SP to follow plan three and then all of you fly. I've got a bad feeling about this. I'm ditching the cell as soon as I hang up. I'll be in touch. Keep safe, tell the others. See ya soon.” Duo closed the phone and tossed it into the back of a passing truck. He split his attention between the laptop and driving. He sent the files to Sally before shutting down and settling in to drive.

Duo watched the clock, worried about Heero waking. They were on the road for nearly two hours before it happened. His breathing changed first, the slow and steady rhythm became sharp and pained. Sounds, like those made by a wounded animal, told him how much pain his partner was in.

“Heero, you with me buddy?” asked Duo softly.

Heero trembled in his seat, his blue eyes wide and vacant. “Won't tell.” He shrank into the seat as though expecting an attack.

Duo forced down his growing panic and tried another tactic. “01 status?”

Heero's body arched as though electricity was running through his body. Duo reached out to touch Heero and was surprised when he felt the hair on his arm stand up and the tell tale feeling of electricity. Duo crossed three lanes and jumped onto the rest stop exit.

He was glad for the early hour. There was no one in the rest stop to see him dig through his bag frantically. Fumbling clumsily he finally managed to dig out the scanner he needed and run it slowly over Heero's tortured body. He swore as he found the electrodes and removed them. He dropped them on the backseat for study later.

Heero whimpered in his seat, eyes still glazed. “Come on, baby, snap out of it.”

“Nonono, no more, never tell,” mumbled Heero even as his eyes started to close.

Duo ran his hand through his bangs, tugging and hoping to awaken from the nightmare. He forced himself to return to driving, they were still an hour away from the safe house and Sally. He shut down, trying to convince himself that everything would be fine. It wasn't working, even in his unconscious state Heero was whimpering and moaning as though in pain.

When they reached the safe house Sally was waiting at the door. Duo gathered Heero in his arms like a child and thanked god that they were miles from anyone as Heero opened his mouth and screamed.

“Get him into that bad,” ordered Sally, “He'll probably stop screaming once you stop touching him.”

Duo followed orders, afraid to know what that meant but desperate to stop hurting his lover. “It's okay, Love,” murmured Duo as he gently placed Heero on the bed. Immediately the screaming stopped. Duo spun, violet flames focused on Sally. “What the hell did they do to him?”

“According to the files you sent me; this guy has previous knowledge of Heero. They knew his tolerances and started there. The drugs they've had him on were tailored to his unique physiology. The list is revolting. Mood enhancers, sensitizers, drops to blur his visions; They've been pumping him full of stimulants to keep him conscious through the torture. Did you know about the nanites?”

“Yeah, we've all got `em,” answered Duo numbly.

“This guy knows how to use them against you. Drugged, helpless, and in constant pain they tried to use sound to wear him down,” ranted Sally.

“And light,” added Duo angrily.

“He didn't break, Duo,” Sally sighed. “God save him, he didn't break. No we just have to let the drugs wear off. I won't risk doing more damage examining him until then.”

Usually steady hands, hands that could pick any lock given enough time, started to tremble. It moved up his arms and down his body. Tears burned at his eyes and he struggled to breathe. Just as he was sure his knees would give out, Sally's strong arms wrapped around him. She maneuvered him to the couch before his legs gave out.

“Damn it, Maxwell,” she grumbled as she held him, “Either cry it out or talk it out. I need you to have a level head.”

Violet eyes, wide and watery, lifted to meet hers. “Six weeks,” he gasped trying to force his breathing back to normal. “How did it get so bad in six weeks? Who would have done this? Why now, the war has been over for years? I… I just want to hold him and thanks to these bastards I can't even do that.”

“An hour, maybe two, then you can hold him.”

Their heads snapped up as alarms blared from Sally's computer. Guilt and grief was pushed aside as they scrambled to check the monitors. “Shit, bug out!” snapped Duo.

Sally was already moving. Grabbing bags of medical supplies she bolted for the car; leaving Duo to grab Heero. Duo scooped Heero up and rushed to follow; Heero's lack of screams a small blessing. He dropped Heero on the backseat and jumped in the drivers seat. Starting the car he tore away from the house down the back drive.

“Press the blue button on the bottom of my laptop and toss it,” ordered Duo.

Sally did as she was told and was surprised when Duo floored the accelerator. Thirty seconds later the world shook under the force of the blast. A secondary explosion announced the closest cars gas tank succumbing to the heat and shrapnel.

“Do you always carry around that much explosives?” questioned Sally ruefully.

“You don't think that's all of it, do you?” smirked Duo. “Grab the cell phone out of the glove box and toss it here.”

“What are you thinking,” asked Sally handing him the phone.

Duo dialed the first number on speed dial, “05 we've been compromised. Ditch all electronics, buy new. The kidnappers had intimate knowledge about 01, probably former handler or trainer, possible leak in Preventors. Call 03 He'll take care of 04. Tell them we're going on a little trip back in time coordinates in the `02's Oh Shit plan' that only the five of us know.”

“SP?” questioned 05.

“With me; as safe as we can be.”

“01?”

“I'll explain when we meet.” He couldn't pass on the knowledge he had, that their gundanium man was down, couldn't shakes their worlds until he was there to watch their backs. “05… Don't get caught. Stay safe, tell the others. See ya soon.”
