Author notes: Not a lot of action this chapter but it is necessary to move the story along. I know Heero is a bit OOC but I've also explained that. C&C is always welcome. I hope you enjoy this story.

Gods of War
Dawn

Warmth, familiar and yet something from a distant dream. He hurt, every bit of his being seemed to be wrapped in a haze of pain, and yet not. It was not the blinding pain that stole everything. He was afraid to open his eyes, afraid of the shadows that lurked bringing with them pain; afraid that his eyes would still refuse to see. He tried to move his arms but they were still too heavy.

“Shh, its okay love, I've got you,” murmured a voice near his ear causing him to jump.

A heavy weight slid over his shoulder and landed in a pile in his lap. One hand weakly clasped the cinnamon braid as he forced cerulean eyes open. His vision was still slightly blurry but he could make out familiar honey blonde hair in the seat in front of him.

“Duo?” he croaked pleadingly.

“Yeah, babe, it's me. Sorry it took so long to find you. They kept moving around. They were always one step ahead of us. Kat decided, without Preventors backing, to play bait and we have you,” explained Duo gently. “They've tried nabbing Kat and me. Preventors has a leak.”

Heero trembled as he felt Duo's hands rub up and down his arms. To his horror a small whimper escaped his lips. He tried not to flinch at the gentle touch. There was no pain but the intenseness of the lack of pain was terrifying. He struggled to make his abused voice work. “N… no more; touch not rub,” he finally managed.

“I'm sorry,” sighed Duo, “some of the drugs must still be in your system. I thought it was okay because you weren't screaming.”

“Doesn't hurt,” Heero answered softly, “just… too much.”

“Heero how is your vision?” asked Sally from the drivers seat.

He trembled more against Duo and his hand spasmed on Duo's braid. “`Ro?” questioned Duo when he didn't answer.

“They were blurry. I… I don't want to open them again… I'm afraid.”

“The drops that they put in them should be wearing off. I need to know if your vision is clear yet,” said Sally gently. “It will clear.”

Duo shifted Heero so that he could see his face. “Come on, love, let me see those pretty blue eyes.”

Heero struggled, trapped between his fear and what he knew had to happen. His eyes felt gritty and hot, the burning nearly gone. “It's almost clear.”

“Gorgeous!” proclaimed Duo holding up a bottle of water with a straw. “Let's see if we can get some fluids into you. We would have gone with an IV but it's not an option till we're holed up. If you can't keep it down we'll have to risk the IV.”

Heero took a small sip, the cool water soothing his pained throat. Suddenly his eyes got wide and he turned his focus back to Duo, “Relena?”

“Safe,” replied Duo seriously. “She wasn't the target; you were.”

“They kept asking me where you would go to hide?” whispered Heero.

“Make room guys,” warned Sally, “first rendezvous, 04.”

“Shit, I was hoping that Trowa or Fei would be first,” Duo sighed.

“Don't underestimate Quatre,” replied Sally pushing the door open. “04, move your ass.”

Quatre pushed six bags into the side before hopping in. He dropped into the seat behind Heero and Duo and ran a tired hand through his hair. He took one look at Heero and gave him a small smile. Heero blinked a couple of times and found he could focus on the blonds face.

“You look like shit,” rasped Heero, “Status?”

Quatre's bark of laughter startled Heero. “You don't look much better. I'm just tired. Just like old times, only without the restful periods. We've been in and out of safe houses faster then ever. They just keep finding us.” Quatre turned his gaze to Duo. “Wufei's call came about two minutes before out parameter alarms went off. Rashid and his men have taken over Relena's security.”

“How is Une handling the leak?” questioned Duo.

“She's called in the people she knows she can trust. They are going over personnel starting with the people closest to her and expanding outward,” explained Quatre.

Heero tried to follow the conversation but his attention kept wavering. Exhaustion was pulling him under and as much as he tried to fight it he couldn't. Listening to the familiar voices, his head dropped to Duo's shoulder.

“He's finally asleep?” asked Sally glancing in the rearview mirror.

“Yeah, I'm amazed he stayed awake that long,” answered Duo.

“What did they do to him?” asked Quatre. “He feels… different.”

“He's still working some of the drugs out of his system. It's one of J's people, I'd almost bet it. Quatre, they know about the nanites and how to use them against us.”

“We need to find out what Heero knows from his time there,” said Quatre, his mind busy spinning through all the possibilities.

“He wasn't lucid when I got to him,” he said. Duo pulled Heero a little closer and forced his hands to be still. “Touching him made him scream. They had him in a small cell with a recording with multiple voices and flashing lights. He can barely lift his hands.”

“Give him a few days, he'll be close to normal,” reminded Quatre.

“Not possible,” said Sally, “He's looking at months of recovery time.”

“It took him months to heal from self destructing. His nanites should be fully up and running now.”

“I guess I don't know enough about the nanites,” admitted Sally.

“Since I'm pretty sure you and Fei have moved beyond the hand holding stage, you should probably check out the files that Heero and Quatre have. The two of them are the experts,” Duo said shifting in his seat.

“I never really thought about warning them,” Quatre said with wide eyes. “Fei probably doesn't even realize…”

“Spit it out Winner,” growled Sally.

“The nanites can be spread through bodily fluids,” he replied blushing.

Sally paled. “How long does it take to notice the effect?”

“It was little stuff for me,” answered Duo. “I gained three inches in a matter of months; it basically reversed the damage done by the years of malnutrition. My speed and reflexes were already good but they got better. I never tested to see if I got as strong as Heero.”

“It takes about a year for them to fully integrate with all your systems,” added Quatre.

“Why so long?” she questioned softly.

“They have to multiply accordingly and in order to prevent damage it is a slow process,” replied Quatre pulling one of the bags into his lap. “I'll pull the files onto your computer. You will probably understand them a lot better than I do.”

“Thanks, why don't you guys get some sleep. I'm good to drive for a couple of hours. We'll switch off at the next rendezvous.”

* * *

The voice, he knew that voice. It was the same venomous sound that tormented him from his oldest nightmares. He tried to struggle as they stripped him of his possessions but his body refused to cooperate. Everything seemed too heavy despite his great strength. That voice laughed, amused as he struggled to keep them from taking his wedding band.

“Do you remember me kid? You always were my favorite, a god among mortals. Tell me how to find the others.”

Heero struggled in Duo's arms startling his braided lover awake. Duo grabbed at the flailing arms and tried to hold on without hurting the weaker man. “Heero,” called Duo, “Heero wake up. It's all over. Wake up, babe.”

Heero's eyes snapped open and he slumped trembling in Duo's arms. Despite his weakened state, he brought left hand before his face. Tears threatened to fall as he turned to Duo. “They took it, they took my wedding band.”

Duo hugged Heero as tightly as he dared, ever aware of his broken ribs. “It's okay `Ro,” whispered Duo pulling a chain from inside his shirt. “I found it at the first raid.” He unclasped the necklace and put it around his husband before gently wiping away Heero's tears.

“I knew him,” Heero sobbed. “I think we all know him. Training… I have nightmares from his training. He… he had a name for us…”

Quatre's blue eyes widened in shock and horror while the color drained from his face; “Gods of war,” he whispered.

“The Mads killed him,” protested Duo, “even they thought he was nuts.”

“He escaped,” Quatre corrected pushing his horror away. “He had friends inside and H couldn't find him again.”

“Who is driving next?” questioned Sally, “We're almost to the next pickup.”

“I will,” answered Duo, “I got some sleep with `Ro.”

“Okay,” Sally glanced at Heero in the mirror, “I've got to check you over again now that the drugs are nearly all out of your system.”

Heero nodded, not wanting to talk.

Sally frowned. “Does your throat hurt?”

Heero nodded again and snuggled into Duo's warmth. Exhaustion was tugging at his consciousness again. Just as he was starting to drift, Duo was slipping out from behind him and Sally was saying something from the front. To his surprise the van squealed to a halt and Duo jumped out the side door. The sounds of a fight rang out for several moments before bags were tossed in the van and Trowa slid into the seat behind him. Sally slid into the seat beside him as Duo took her place driving.

“Status?” snapped Sally turning in her seat.

“Dislocated shoulder and a couple bruises,” answered Trowa, “I kicked the gas canister into the sewer.”

Sally moved into the back seat, giving Trowa an apologetic smile. “This is probably going to hurt.”

Trowa shrugged with his good shoulder. “No more than doing it myself.”

“Hey, Kat,” called Duo from the front seat, “Go through those bags and make sure they didn't slip us any presents. Trowa, no time to be shy; there are bags of clothes behind your seat, let's ditch those ones. Q-man you probably should too.”

Sally returned to the seat with Heero and pulled a bag from between the front seats. She brought out a penlight and turned to Heero, “How's your vision.”

“Clear,” rasped Heero, “Throat hurts and I'm starting to get hungry.”

“Your eyes look good, but I don't want you talking anymore. The screaming did a lot of damage to your throat. No talking so it heals properly. How do your ribs feel?”

Heero lifted his eyebrow at her but answered anyways, “Sore.”

“You have at least two broken ribs and several bruised ribs. You've lost a lot of weight and you're going to feel weak for a while. I can't really give you a good timeline on recovery until I understand the nanites better. We need to find a way to check the nanites, make sure he didn't damage them in any way,” Sally explained.

“What about the nanites?” questioned Trowa.

Quatre jumped in to explain. “The man trying to capture us knows about the nanites. He knows how to use them against us. Because you weren't originally part of the program you may not have dealt with him. He called us Gods of War and was particularly good at causing pain.”

“He called himself Cronus. I took the original pilots place long after he left,” replied Trowa, “Even the mechanics knew to keep away from him. He was a sadist. I thought that H ordered his execution.”

“Yes, but he had friends on the inside and escaped,” sighed Quatre. “The answer to your question; we would know if the nanites had been tampered with. The pain is most likely caused by interrupting them. I can tell you from experience that it hurts like hell.”

Sally opened a protein drink and handed it to Heero. “If you start to feel sick, stop; if your stomach can handle that we'll try something more solid. Quatre let me have everything you have about the nanites.”

“Get some rest back there guys, we meet Fei in three hours then it's off to the safe house. We need to contact Une and let her know as much about this guy as we can remember.”

“We'll take care of that once we have the chance to talk to Wufei,” said Quatre, “He may remember more. Hopefully we can remember his real name.”
