~That Night~

The moon was covered by clouds as Sally watched Wufei leave on his motorcycle. She watched until the darkness swallowed him up and she couldn't see him anymore. Heero stood by her side and watched with her. Sally turned back inside but Heero stood out there for a few more minutes. He tensed when he saw something move in the distance.
He squinted into the night to get a better look. He saw a boy with a long braid walk down the road, heading in the same direction as Wufei. The boy turned his head and looked back at Heero.
The clouds moved and Heero could see the boy's face. It was heart shaped and there was a playful smirk on his lips. He gasped as his eyes were caught with violet ones. He stood there a long time and looked into those eyes. He felt a sense of familiarity and realized this was the same person he saw at Zechs' funeral.
He wanted to shout and run after the boy but something made him stop. The smile on the boys face changed from playful to something else. It took Heero a few minutes to realize that the smile was full of love. Then the moment was over and the boy turned back to the road. Heero blinked and found himself staring at nothing.
He tried to shrug it off as a hallucination but something inside him told him it wasn't. Something also told him he knew that boy from somewhere but he just couldn't remember where. He turned and went back into the palace. Outside, it started to rain.
~A few days later~
[Little Mikey Carson, 67 to 75
He rode his bike like the devil
Until the day he died.]
Wufei cursed again as he felt another bullet whiz by his head. He turned and fired at the enemy soldier, killing him. Wufei kept running toward the forest where his bike was hidden. He pulled a detonator out of his jacket and pressed the button. He felt the rumble of the ground as the explosions went off before he heard it.
He finally made it into the forest and grabbed his bike and revved it. Then got on and sped back to Sanq. As he sped down the long stretch of road he heard a mechanical sound over the sound of the wind whipping around him. He glanced back and swore when he saw a Aries chasing him.
He sped up as fast as he could go on the bike when there was an explosion in front of him. He swerved around it and just barely kept the bike steady. He swerved on the road so it was hard for the following Aries to get a good shot on him. He prayed that his bike go faster and that he would get through this alive.
Wufei felt the bike jerk beneath him and the next thing he knew he was flying through the air. The Aries had shot the ground under the back of the motorcycle. Wufei landed harshly on the road and rolled. He finally skidded to a stop. He moaned in pain, and coughed up blood. He couldn't move, he was in so much pain. His body looked like a broken doll on the road.
[When he grows up he wants to be
Mister Vertigo on the flying trapeze
Oh, 1940 to 1992]
The Aries raised it's gun and aimed at the body on the ground. Wufei looked up at the suit and smiled. He had done his job and now Sally and Heero had a chance to stop them. He only hoped Sally would forgive him. He thought back on his life and smiled. He felt he had made Meiran, his first wife, proud. She had been the warrior and not him up until the day she died. Then he became the warrior to get revenge for her death. He had always looked up to his first wife and he felt he did what she had wanted.
He heard a noise to his left and looked over and was shocked to see a boy with long hair in a braid and glowing violet eyes standing there. Beside him stood Zechs, Quatre, Trowa and Une. He opened his mouth to shout when he felt peace settle over him.
He smiled at the boy and whispered, "Maxwell."
Then the Aries fired.

~Five Months Later~
Christmas was soon in coming and many people were celebrating. The war was finally over.
Sally stood and looked over the streets from the top of the newly built Preventer building. Heero moved into the room and stood behind her. She wiped a tear from her eye and turned to look at him.
"We did it."
"Hai."
She turned back to study the celebrating masses below.
"He would have loved to seen this. They all would have."
Heero thought back to all the losses over the past year. Starting with Zechs, then Quatre, Trowa and Une then finally Wufei. Their losses still hurt Heero even if he didn't show it.
"Heero, I'm quitting. I just can't do this anymore."
Heero nodded his head, "I understand. Who will you leave in charge?"
Sally turned back to him and hugged him. Then moved back, "You. I'm leaving you in charge."
Heero looked at her in shock, "Me? But…"
Sally put her finger to his lips, "No. You are a good leader and you will make sure this never happens again. I just can't do this anymore. Not without…"
Sally put a hand to her mouth as she tried to stop her sobs, but they came anyway. She had lost most of her friends in the war and her husband. She leaned against Heero and got herself under control. She then pulled back and gave Heero a watery smile. There was a knock on the door then the door opened and Noin came in the room.
"Sally?"
"One minute, Noin." She turned to look at Heero, "I'm leaving you in charge. I'm going to go with Noin. Don't let us down."
Heero nodded his head, "I won't. Goodbye Sally."
"Bye Heero."
Then Sally left the room with Noin.
~Years later~

Heero rasped quietly in his bed in his room. The doctors wanted him to be in the hospital but he refused. He was the last one left alive. Noin and Sally had both died soon after peace had been achieved. They said it was heart problems but Heero knew it was from broken hearts. They missed their husbands so much that they followed them.
Heero ran the Preventers and kept things peaceful but soon he felt his age catch up to him. He had to give up working as the leader of the Preventers and gave it over to Martin Peacecraft to run. He was just like his father.
Alexandria worked as the Vice Foreign Minister after Relena retired. Both of them were bringing peace to the world and it seemed that it would stay for real this time. Relena had retired and moved to a house in the country with Dorothy. They lived peacefully for years. They died together in that house.
Caitlin walked into the room to check up on her patient. The doctors didn't want Heero at home by himself so they hired her to watch him. She was to report any changes to them and call them in an emergency. She made sure he had some water and checked his vitals. During this process Heero stayed silent.
In the beginning, Caitlin had tried to converse with him but soon gave up when he didn't talk back. She smiled at him when she was done checking him over and then quietly left the room.
Heero sighed. He blinked and then widened his eyes when he saw a boy in his room. It took him a few minutes to realize it was the boy he had seen when Wufei went on his last mission. The boy smiled down at him and sat on the edge of his bed.
"Are you here to take me away?" Heero rasped quietly.
"Yes, Heero." The boy said. His voice was smooth and soothing.
Heero blinked in surprise, "You know my name?"
"Of course I do, koi."
Heero started to cough horribly in surprise. The boy helped him into a sitting position and rubbed his back. Heero weezed trying to get breath back into his lungs. When he was finally able to draw a breath the boy eased him back onto the bed.
Finally Heero was able to speak, "I'm not your koi. I don't even know you."
The boy smiled at him, "Of course you do, Heero. I'm Duo Maxwell, you're koi."
Heero's eyes widened as his mind was assaulted with memories. Memories of him with Duo, Quatre, Trowa and Wufei fighting a war. Fighting a war against Zechs, Une and Noin. Then after the war and moving in with Duo. Their love for each other. He remembered how they both died of old age.
"Open your eyes, Heero." Duo said and caressed his face.
Heero didn't realize he had closed them and opened them. He looked up into the eyes of his beloved and sighed, "Duo."
"You remember me!"
"Of course, baka. But I don't understand?"
"You and the others were sent into a different universe where you were needed. Unfortunately I couldn't go with you. I was needed elsewhere, but when I wasn't needed anymore I hurried as fast as I could to get back to you guys. I was given a choice of either entering during the war and not know any of you or to be the one to help you once you died. I chose the latter, knowing I will see you again, my heart."
Heero smiled at him, "I missed you."
Duo smiled down at him, "Me too. Come on my love. The others are waiting."
Heero looked at him quizzically, "The others?"
"Yeah, here hold my hand."
Duo reached down and took Heero's hand in his. Heero gasped as he finally saw the others. Noin and Zechs stood off on one side of him. Zechs held Noin in his arms and they were both smiling. Next to them stood Quatre, Trowa and Une. They smiled down at him. Wufei and Sally stood next to them with Relena and Dorothy. They were all waiting for him. He smiled at them then looked at Duo.
"I'm ready."
"Good. Now, just let go and then we can get out of here."
Heero closed his eyes and let go. When he reopened his eyes he was standing in Duo's arms looking at his friends. A slight smile graced his lips and then they faded from the room.
~Heero's Funeral~
Many people attended the funeral of the last hero of the war. Martin and Alexandria stood at the forefront to say goodbye to their Uncle. There was a flash of lightening followed by thunder. Then it started to rain.
