A/N: I can't leave this fic alone!! I updated on some other ones so I think that should hold some people for the moment.

Nanashi1: Arigatou, minna-chan! I don’t know why the chap didn’t come out right the first two times I posted it but I hope it works this time. Thank you for letting me know!

Priscel: ::grin:: yeah but leaving cliffhangers and not updating until I get feedback is the best method I know. I love hearing whether you guys like it or not. Thank you for reviewing.

Crazeme: Arigatou, I enjoyed writing about Duo being innocent and Heero being the protective I'm-not-in-love-with-my-best-friend type. There aren't enough fics with Duo being innocent; its always Heero. I wonder why? ::shrugs:: oh, well. Thank you for reviewing!!

Camillian: I probably spelled your name wrong. Sorry, I'm kind of trying to remember everyone who reviewed and what they said. Thank you for reviewing

[...] Duo's thoughts

Chapter 7:

Years passed since Duo's kidnapping. No ransom note came.

Everyday that passed Heero died a little more inside. He had never noticed fully how important the younger were was to him. He spent most of his time in their room they had shared together. The last place he ever saw his friend. He could still see the energetic bearer's smile and hear his giggles. The most painful thing was that he could still smell him as if he had been there just yesterday.

Odin and Une stood in the threshold of the room and looked sadly at their son. He hadn't smiled much less showed any emotion since Duo was taken. Odin had sent out a few searchers but all they came back with was the broken hair tie that held Duo's braid in. That same tie was sitting in Odin's bedroom.

He couldn't tell his son that Duo was dead. He wouldn't accept it and neither would Heero. However, Heero had to find a mate. He had finally reached his twenty-sixth winter, a year later than other packs would've waited.

"I'm not getting a mate," The grey were said monotonously. Over the years, he had buried himself into training to be an alpha. He knew all about having to have a mate by his twenty-fifth winter. Duty or no, he couldn't think about such things when half his soul missing.

"I'm sorry Heero, but if you don't you'll-"

"I don't care!" Heero lowered his head so that his bangs shadowed his eyes. "I don't care," he repeated barely above a whisper. He stood and stalked around the room. Finally, he slipped past both of his parents to go somewhere to think.

Heero found himself at the old waterhole he and Duo used to go to. They had taken Trowa and Quatre, now nineteen each, with them every so often until it became their secret meeting place. His heart clenched as memories began to flood back.

// "Come swim with me!"
"I can't swim."
"You can float!"
"Yeah, like a rock." //

It had been eight whole years; Duo would be at least twenty-three and in his prime. Heero mentally wondered how the braided were would look like now. His hair would probably be well past his hips and kept in a tight braid. His build would be lithe and narrow, the custom build for a feline. The stripes on his forearms would be pale and his skin would be at least one shade darker from the sun's rays.

Heero paused and looked wistfully down at what used to be the mud pies they made the first year Duo had wondered into his life. They had eroded away to small brown spots on the grass. The small crater at the edge of the water had grown shallower as well as wider from the rain and tide and was barely noticeable.

All the memories were too painful. Heero turned away and stared into the dense vegetation several feet away from the sunny patch. His eyes narrowed when he saw something flicker through the shadows. He sniffed expectantly but only picked up the smell of a rabbit. He turned so that he could look towards the water and the vegetation just by swiveling his head.

The wind picked up sending fallen leaves swirling around him. When was this pain going to go away? It was a question that he asked himself everyday. Sad cobalt eyes focused on a small grasshopper.

"Duo, I'm sorry!"

"I should be apologizing to you," a sultry purr answered. Heero tensed and looked around frantically. He couldn't sense anything. "I'm the one who's supposed to kill you." Glowing violet cat eyes stared from the shadows.

"Who are you?" Heero growled.

There was a smooth rumble of laughter before the figure began to move. Silent claws left indentions in the soft dirt underneath. "I'm known as Shinigami; but you can call me Duo. I'm here to kill you."

The object of Heero's thoughts and heart stepped into view. His icy amethysts glinted back at him. A humorless smile was spread out on the heart-shaped face showing off twin fangs.

"Duo?" Heero fought down the surge of relief and happiness welling up in his chest. Duo looked the exact why he imagined he would, but something was missing. The innocent light in his eyes was gone. "Are-what?"

"I would love to enjoy a friendly banter with you right about now, but J wants you dead." With that, Duo charged with his claws unsheathed. Heero was stunned long enough by Duo's words to get the tail end force of the were's swipes. He staggered and stared in shock at the shallow lacerations on his chest.

"Duo, why are you doing this?"

The braided were paused and looked thoughtful. "Dunno, I have to do what my sire tells me."

"Sire?!" Heero was shocked yet again. "Duo, do you remember who I am? What about Odin, Une, and Relena? Surely you remember Quatre and Trowa!"

Duo seemed taken back by the desperateness in the grey were's voice. He crouched low and readied his claws yet again. The names did sound familiar. He shook his head and chided himself for the momentary lapse. He charged again.

"Damn it, Duo!!" Heero dodged this time and countered with a swipe of his own. Duo danced out of arm's length and ran a hand over the claw marks. They weren't deep but still bled. "Don't make me fight you! If you're Duo, you have to remember something."

"Well, I did say I was Shinigami didn't I?" Duo charged again this time punching at Heero with one hand and following up with a swipe with the other. Heero grunted in pain as the blow connected with his ribs and the claws cut along his collarbone.

Duo paused and threw up his hands in frustration. "Why don't you just concentrate on fighting? Besides, what relationship did we have that was so important that you feel the need not to fight back when I'm trying to kill you?"

"You were my best friend," Heero said almost inaudibly. Duo strained his ears to hear but snorted after hearing the remark. "You were also supposed to be my bearer but."

[ "Guess what. You're special and you can make cubs."
"Weally?"
"Yeah and you can have cubs with me. I'm going to have cubs too."
"I want to stay with Hee-Heewo. I want to wait for Hee-chan."]

Duo shook his head at the tirade of thing going through his head. There was a voice he recognized as his own but the other was. "Hee-chan."

Heero perked his ears and looked sadly to the were. He smiled wistfully as he spoke. "You used to call me that because you couldn't pronounce my name."

"Bullshit!" Duo dropped his guard and started to stalk towards the grey were. Just then a blur of brown and grey tackled him to the ground. Odin bared his teeth down at the wide-eyed youth and growled.

"NO!" Heero pushed and pulled at the larger were's side. "That's Duo!"

"Duo?!" Odin looked again. The dark furred were had all of the features that Duo would've had at this age including the long rope of hair.

Odin reared up on his hunches cautiously. "You're alive. We thought we lost you after you were kidnapped."

"Kidnapped?! What the fuck! I don't remember any of this shit!" Duo was on his feet yelling angrily at both the weres. It frustrated him to no end that they knew all about his past and he only knew what his sire told him. "How the hell can I be his bearer?! J's my sire not him!" Duo pointed a finger at Heero.

"J?" Odin's hairs stood on end instantly. "J was run out of the pack the year you came to live with us. You were to be Heero's bearer."

Duo began to pace. For some reason his eyes kept wandering to the slowly disappearing crater just out of the water's reach. He had something to do with this place but didn't want to admit to any of the things he was being told.

Odin's sigh brought him back to the current problem. "J; he killed off a small village that your mother and father were staying in with your sister Hilde. You were only a newborn then."

Duo's eyes widened. [Hilde!]

"J had your father killed and ran the survivors to the far end of the forest. He followed them. And attacked again when you were around your fourth winter."

"Wait, J said that you did that!" Duo stopped and stared into the old were's eyes. Unlike when he looked at his supposed sire, he felt warmth flood his chest. He ran his the area where his heart was. "He told me that Odin Lowe killed my village along with my parents then shipped Hilde and me off on a slave ship."

"J did that. We managed to save you before they took you away but we couldn't get to your sister in time."

Duo grabbed a handful of his bangs and looked from Odin to Heero. The grey were met his gaze. "I don't believe any of this shit!" With that, Duo turned to run.
"Duo, please! Don't leave again!" Heero ran after him and managed to tackle him to the ground. The two of them wrestled and rolled in the dust. Somehow they made it to the edge of the water with Heero on top.

Duo felt his stomach flutter as the musky smell of the older were met his nose. He shook his head. This wasn't right. He was only supposed to feel that way when he was with his sire.

Heero panted through the pain in his side. During the rough tumble Duo's claw had slashed just below his ribcage. Crimson dripped to stain the well Duo's tanned torso.
"Please don't leave again. I promise I'll keep my promise this time. I'll protect you this time, I promised," Heero whispered desperately into the braided were's neck. He took a deep breath. The musky-sweet smell he had loved so much was still there.

Duo shivered and fought the urge to moan at the feel of the dominant were's breath. Why was his body betraying him so easily?

"Heero, let him go," Odin called. Heero looked up miserably to his father. "He doesn't remember; it would be best for him to choose what he wants to believe for now."
Heero rolled to lie next to the bearer. Tears already threatened to fall at the thought of losing his best friend yet again. He choked back a sob as the bearer began to roll to his feet.

Duo flipped and placed his claws to Heero's jugular in one fluid motion. He bared his teeth maliciously and added a small amount of pressure. His breath caught and his resolve crumbled as a single tear escaped the almond shaped eyes.

["I'll protect you, Duo."
"He might try to escape."
"He wouldn't do that, would you?"
"No I wouldn't."]

"I just want to let you know that I'm sorry that I couldn't keep my promise, Duo," Heero said with a strained voice. More tears began to fall. "I wasn't strong enough to protect you like I promised I would. I'm sorry. Gomen nasai."

"I-" Duo swallowed the lump in his throat. With a frustrated yowl he lifted himself from the ground and ran as fast and as far away as his legs would carry him.

Heero watched him go until he couldn't make out his shadow. He then curled up around himself and began to sob silently. "Duo."

A single tear left the fleeing were's eyes. "Heero."

A/N: Thank you to Getseui again, she helped me with the idea of this chap. There was supposed to be more injuries sustained on Duo's and Heero's part but I have a weak heart when it comes to torturing those two.

Well, you heard right, J is supposed to be Duo's sire. ::cringes:: He's not happy about it, let me tell you. ::watches Duo rant in the background:: There will be *no* DuoxJ action. It makes me gag just thinking about it. Review! The sooner you do, the sooner I can get Duo out of J's grubby fingers.
