Hating a Phoenix, Chapter 4
By: Firey Angelwings
***Hey everyone! We have some MAJOR HYxRP in this chapter…but it's not all that romantic! *grumble* Ah well, at least they'll be in contact, right? Ha, ha, ha. Blah, blah, I'll save the talking for the bottom o' this page.
Disclaimer: I do not own Gundam Wing, its characters, or anything related to it. I only own the idea behind this fanfic. I am borrowing the characters, but will not use them improperly, etc…
On the red planet of Mars, in a large mansion, deep in its low basement, there stood a large metal door. Just from its, look, one could tell it was very thick. Beside it was a sophisticated keypad in which to enter its password. There was obviously something important behind this door.
It suddenly flew up, and three tall figures exited from it. One of these figures had been pronounced dead for a long time, one an ex-soldier who's location was unknown, and one was a politician who had been dead for a year, though the world and colonies still knew her under a new face. They were quite an odd group.
Relena Peacecraft, aka Artemis to everyone else, had a troubled expression tacked on her beautiful pale face. Her brother tried to reassure her with soothing words,
“Don't worry too much. Everything in the hangar is progressing, however slowly. It'll be OK, Lena”
Another line wrinkled her forehead. She sighed pensively, then replied,
“That may be so, but I'm worried about not having enough time. But, yes…I suppose that there is nothing we can do for the moment.”
Noin and Milliardo nodded gravely. Then, they all headed off to have breakfast.
Heero Yuy sat in front of his laptop. He had started running tracing programs from the moment he had received the call, but he still couldn't locate the person on the other line. He grew increasingly frustrated.
“…But we have to get down to business. Your mission is to run some background checks on the singer Artemis. I am suspicious of her.”
Heero's mind twitched in recognition of the famous name. His mind turned to questions.
“Why would you care what some woman who sings and dances has to do with you? You are wasting your time.”
The man on the other line hesitated, then answered,
“Her voice. Not while singing, but when she talks, I find that Artemis sounds quite like the voice of Relena Dorlain's. It makes me nervous.”
Heero felt a sharp needle of pain pressing into the depths of his soul at the sound of that name. He grew angry.
“You are wasting my time now. Relena Dorlain is dead. I killed her. That is final. People don't come back from the dead.”
The man made a disapproving sound, and clucked his tongue.
“Don't be so rude. Of course I know that SHE is dead. But I want any connection with her GONE. So investigate into Artemis, and if she has anything to do with Dorlain: KILL HER.”
The screen became blank. As did Heero's mind, for a moment. Then he got up, picked up some clothes, and walked to the washroom to change. He knew what he had to do.
The young woman named Hilde stared at her late best friend's grave. She knelt, and traced the letters on the tombstone with her finger: RELENA DORLAIN. Hilde gazed thoughtfully at the fresh flowers that were strewn around the grass. Even now, there were people who tended to Lena's grave. `It was really sweet', thought Hilde.
She came here every month, not just out of respect, but to pour out her soul. Even now, Lena was her guardian of secrets. So, Hilde began…
“Lena, I'm really confused. Duo has been staying at my apartment for a little while. No…we don't have any romance between us, but sometimes, I feel… It's hard to explain. I thought that Duo and I would just be friends. But, I think that, that I sort of want him. Like, his companionship as a friend is great, but I'm thinking more and more about him romantically. But I know from many of my friends, that once you open that door, and you break up, it's never restored, that friendship. Well, I'm not sure. So…until I am, I'm going to stay quiet. I know that's not what you would tell me to do, but I'm too nervous. Sorry, Lena.”
The cause of Relena Dorlain's (failed) assassination was because of conniving members of the Earth Sphere United Nation. But one man in particular was the main reason for her death. His name is Maxwell Pavey.
His father was infatuated with Relena Peacecraft's biological mother.
Maxwell's father, Jonathon Pavey, was a man completely (and unhealthily) captivated by Rosalyn soon-to-be-Peacecraft. However, one day, he discovered that Rosalyn was of a completely different race than humans: she was called a Phoenix. But he was not frightened by the power of such a race; rather, it drew him to her even more. Even though Rosalyn was engaged to Relena's father, Jonathon began blackmailing her to break off the engagement, for risk of telling her secret.
Rosalyn despised Jonathon, however. She didn't like his crooked way of thinking, and was deeply in love with her fiancé. One day, when Rosalyn was walking just below a cliff, she met Jon, and yet another threat. The two began to fight, throwing insults at each other; worse mudslinging than that of politicians. Then, Jon slapped her across the face, and commanded Rosalyn to marry him. She was immediately enraged at his touching her. She used her Phoenix powers, and caused a large rock to fall on him. Jonathon Pavey was killed instantly. Rosalyn knew her wrong, but she never said anything, and felt justified because of all the harassment she had been through.
Jon Pavey's death was proclaimed to be an accident. And Rosalyn got married.
Sally Po was caught in another conversation with Wufei. She felt like spilling all of her fears out to him, but she only let one go.
“The political situation was been getting more and more tense for a year. I'm afraid that a war will break out once more, now that Relena has been gone for this long. The reality is hitting everyone hard, and other politicians, I believe, consider the barrier for peace that Lena was almost dispelled.”
Sally wore an expression of utmost despair.
“I, I'm afraid of another war. It would tear this fine fabric of peace forever.”
Heero Yuy's eyes were completely alert, and he had no trouble seeing clearly, though it was 1:30 AM, and he had no light. From his tracking and information, Artemis should be inside the area 14 of the recording studio.
`It's lucky for me that she likes to work late, and alone. I can leave no loose ends, if it comes to that', Heero thought.
He quietly made his way down the dark hall. Heero halted outside an open door, and heard the sound of a pen scratching on paper. So she wrote her songs the old-fashioned way. To each their own. Heero slowly drew his gun, then silently walked into the doorway. He kept his gun aimed at her head, though her back was turned to him.
“Artemis.”
She whirled, her crimson eyes gazing at him, her pupils dilating slightly. Her wavy, silver hair fell over one shoulder. Her expression of…disbelief? It was unreadable.
Then, the absolute wrong thing to happen, did. The look in her eyes quickly changed, and in a second, Artemis was laughing uncontrollably, tears forming in her eyes. When she managed to gain control of herself, she muttered under her breath,
“Come to kill me yet again? I should have known…”
Big, neon letters flashed at him in his mind: SHE IS RELENA. SHE IS RELENA. Keeping his gun aimed at her head, he slowly asked,
“How are you alive, Relena?”
She shrugged, her hair falling smoothly over her shoulders again.
“I'm not human. Useful little trick.”
Heero wasn't sure if he had felt relief when he had confirmed that Relena was alive, but now it was replaced with complete and utter rage.
“Why are you plaguing me? You're supposed to be dead. Gone. Dissolving away in the ground. Why do you always come back?”
Relena's red eyes caught fire. She refuted,
“You are the one who came here. It would have been better if you had just stayed away, Perfect Soldier.” Her last two words were dripping with venom.
“I was told to investigate you. You, as Artemis. I'm wondering why I bothered.”
Relena was perfect at making rebuttals, though.
“I have no idea why you care. Perhaps you should find out for yourself.”
Heero had been walking towards the door. Upon her words, he whirled, and spat out,
“You are a complete delusional fool. You should know by now: You mean nothing to me. You are the lowest on my meter.”
Inside, Relena felt a stab of hurt. But she wouldn't let herself lose.
“You shut up! Don't talk of thing that you know nothing about. Of course I know that you don't care about me. And you know how I know that? Because you are Heero Yuy, and you are not CAPABLE of caring…about anyone!”
Suddenly, Heero was at a loss for words. But Relena continued her fury,
“And I'll tell you once! You should never think that I care about you. After all, why would I give a damn about the person who assassinated me?”
Leaning outside, by the doorway, was Milliardo Peacecraft. He smiled to himself, in inner triumph. He had no idea how this had come about, but he loved it. He had once been afraid that the two would fall for each other. He didn't want to lose Lena. But now, Yuy had NO chance with his sister. Besides, she could get so much better.
Relena's features screamed her anger. Finally, shaking all over, she pointed to the door.
“Heero Yuy, get the hell out. Leave. NOW!”
Without a word, Heero did so. He couldn't stand this abuse any longer. While passing the doorway, he walked by a chuckling Zechs, who said nothing. Heero continued his way out.
Maxwell Pavey was finishing his transmission with Heero Yuy.
“I have found no connection from Artemis to Relena Dorlain. You were mistaken.”
He nodded, deep in thought. Yuy's eyes narrowed.
“But I don't like working for you on wild goose chases. Therefore, I have taken the liberty of destroying your satellite equipped with the laser.”
An attendant ran over to him and whispered,
“Sir, the satellite has been blown up.”
Pavey's eyes narrowed to slits. He disconnected the communication line. Then he turned,
“Ah well. He served his purpose, anyways. Is everything ready?”
The attendant nodded in confirmation.
“Good. Then send the order to commence Operation Mousetrap.”
***Hey once again. So I've finally got things rolling in this fic. YAY!! And…the war officially starts in the next chapter (for sure), and then things get really juicy. I'm trying to get a lot of characters into this fic, not only the main ones. We'll see how I do.
Sorry about the REALLY CRUEL Heero and Relena reunion. Sorry, sorry, sorry! I hate it when they're fighting, but they can't just suddenly be in love. It wouldn't make sense! I'm keeping everyone in character as much as possible. (You might notice how Relena speaks better than anyone else, y'know, she was a diplomat…) What can you do, what can you do…
Well, as you must know, I LOVE mail (good and bad) so send it all! I CAN work it all in, unless it is the complete opposite of what's planned! Also, still open for debate: YES or NO on a lemon chapter. That's it for now!
Ciao,
