In The Bedroom: Night 14
Curled into a small ball, he shuddered as gunfire rained down around him, crashing against the cement walls, small broken chips hurtling in their wake to slap against more cement…An endless cycle.
Voices approached, the gunfire grew louder. Duo uncurled, took in his surroundings. Trapped. Nowhere left to run. The night was heavy, no sign of a moon or stars, the thick smoke above a welcome blanket. His eyes stung as he took in the familiar alley, the blocked off exits. There should have been a way out…
Sometimes things change.
Snarling, Duo measured the wall at his back, eyes calculating as he moved slowly away, schooling calm to settle within. The voices grew louder. The gunfire slapped into the wall near his ear.
Duo ran at the wall, hands grabbing holes that almost weren't there, feet finding purchase on a surface that should have none. He scuttled over the wall and into a city of boxes, homes, safe houses.
He moved silently through the thrall, ignoring the small, peeking faces as the rain broke through the smoke. Hundreds would freeze tonight. Others tomorrow, even more the night after. It's a too familiar blanket. A haunting reminder. A stinging plea.
Sometimes things change. Sometimes they don't.
