In The Darkness

Chapter 3

"Welcome young Maxwell, the Chosen One."

"What?" he said confused. He had no idea what the hell she was talking about. "What am I the chosen one of?"

"Dark magick is forming within this world," the goddess said, "You have been Chosen by the gods to destroy its evil masters and stop them from destroying mankind."

Duo snorted. "And what if I refuse?"

"Then this world will be overrun by demons and then destroyed," she said. "It is your duty to prevent this."

"Hm, I get it," he said with a smirk, "That ancient prophecy is about to take place isn't it? But if I remember my literature correctly isn't the Chosen One supposed to sacrifice themselves to seal whatever gateway that's trying to be opened."

With a sad look on her face she nodded. "But you don't necessarily have to die."

"No but you're still throwing a piece of yourself away for a bunch of people who don't care at all about you," he said, glaring at her.

She closed her eyes and asked him, "If you had someone you loved to protect would you change your opinion?"

"Do you want to know my opinion?" he asked. "I think this world deserves to be destroyed."

She looked shocked. You could tell there was fear in her voice when she asked, "You would turn your back on your own kind?"

Smiling he said, "That's right. I could care less if the people of this world perish. They don't care for anybody but themselves. So tell me, why should I have to risk my own life just to save theirs?"

"Because you have been chosen to," she said, "Don't let your faith in humanity obscure your decision."

"What the hell have any of those bastards ever done for me?" he yelled.

Tears streamed down Brigit's cheeks. That's when Whisper finally came in, 'Duo, think about what you're saying. Don't let your own hatred for humans doom this planet.'

Brigit started to fade away. "Please Duo, don't let this Earth die." With that she disappeared completely. The stones glow faded.

Duo immediately started to walk away. Whisper followed close behind. She couldn't understand what had caused him to act like that. He usually listened to things and thought them out before he made decisions.

He was silent the whole way home. She kept quiet as well. She was trying to think of a way to convince him that following his destiny was the right thing to do.

No, he already knows that it's the right thing to do. He's just either to stubborn or to afraid to do it. Knowing Duo it was probably the former. His decision might also be based on what the Alliance did to him. After all, they destroyed the only home he had and the people he saw as his family. It's no wonder why he doesn't want to possibly give up his life for them.

However she looked at it, Duo's decision didn't come without a reason. But to make him see past that reason well, that was going to be difficult.

It was a long walk and the silence was getting to her. However, she wanted to give him his space. There was no reason to get him angry now. That would only further deter him from caring out the gods' wishes.

Halfway home it began to snow. By the time they entered the town it was near four o'clock in the morning and the snow was so high, Whisper couldn't walk in it. This forced Duo, much to his dislike, to carry her.

When they entered the house he put her down and without a word, walked into the kitchen. She followed him and perched herself on the small wooden table.

He looked like he was going to make himself something but changed his mind and sat down instead. He was exhausted. She could see that. Not only could she sense his weariness but she could see its physical effects as well. Or at least she could see it in his eyes.

'You should get some rest,' she said, not breaking the silence but disrupting his thoughts nonetheless.

He didn't respond though. He just sat there with his eyes closed. He seemed like he was listening for something.

That's when she felt it. It was faint, as she almost missed it, but it was close by.

'Help,' her ears pricked up. Duo stood up and headed for the door. 'Somebody, please help me.'

Whisper couldn't hear anything, for the cry was heard telepathically, but she knew that they were coming from just outside of the house.

She followed Duo to the door. 'You can't go out there,' she said coming up behind him.

'Someone needs help,' he responded, 'And if they're to weak to really even cry out then they must really be in trouble.' With that he walked out the door, leaving a stunned feline behind.

When he did he was hit with an ice-cold wind. Snow blew in his face and blinded him but he moved on. He could still sense them and they were getting weaker. They were close by though. He could feel that.

"Where are you?!!!" he called out. His voice, however, was only drowned out by the wind so he tried calling out again with his telepathy.

He knew that the person wouldn't hear it. He couldn't direct the thought towards them and unless they could search for thoughts like that, whether they were freezing to death or not, it wouldn't reach then.

Then it seemed as if a miracle came up and slapped him in the face. He heard a reply.

'Fence,' he heard the voice say. It was short but at least Duo knew where to start looking. They were talking about the fence that separated his and the neighbors property (as if a fence would protect them from any curses).

When he reached the fence he looked up and down its length through the snow. He noticed slight movement underneath the snow to his left. Without hesitation he started to dig through the snow, not caring about the numbness of his hands. All he cared about was getting to them.

Soon a person's face came into view and then a set of shoulders. He lifted them out of the snow and held them close to his body. He realized then that it was a young girl. Her small frame shivered vigorously. He picked her up and cradled her as he carried the girl back to his house.

When he got into the house he was surprised to see Whisper sitting there waiting for him. Next to her was a pile of blankets.

'Thought that you might need these,' she said with a smile.

'I wont even ask,' he responded. He took a few minutes to wrap her up in one of them and then brought her into the living room. He placed her on the couch and went back into the entryway to get the rest of the blankets.

'Do you have any idea what kind of danger you're bringing her into?' Whisper said. 'You should have brought her to the doctor.'

'Not in that weather,' he snorted. With that said he walked back into the living room and covered her with the rest of the blankets.

'You might want to dry her off.' He turned to find Whisper standing behind him holding a towel in her mouth.

Growling he took it from her and started to do as she said. That's when he got his first really good look at the young girl.

She looked like she was about thirteen years old and had golden blond hair. Its wet locks clung to her small heart shaped face that held small lips. She was small, maybe four feet, and she was very thin. And although he tried not to look, she had small rounded breasts. He silently thought to himself that if she wasn't half frozen, she'd be very attractive.

Realizing that she was still shivering he decided that it would be best if he stripped her of the wet clothes that still clung to her frail body.

Whisper watched on with slight amusement as he proceeded to take off her shirt and jeans while still trying to keep her under the covers. After a while he finally gave up and quickly decided that he didn't care if he saw her naked or not.

As he removed the articles of clothing he noticed that her shoulders and neck were covered in bruises, and so wasn't the rest of her body for that matter. Among the bruises he could make out bite marks as well.

He grit his teeth together as he realized the origin of these injuries. What kind of sick monsters would do this to her?

When he went to remove the girl's bra she came awake suddenly. Noticing her position she panicked and attempted to move away from him.

Duo backed away from her, hands raised in indication that he wasn't going to hurt her. He said in a smooth, soothing voice he didn't even know he had, "It's ok. Don't be afraid. I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to help."

She didn't ease up. She was all tensed up and holding the blankets up trying to protect herself.

"Please," he urged, "Calm down. I just want to help. My name is Duo." He new for himself that names gave out a sort of trusting feeling with them. However she didn't seem to calm down at all. She started shaking even more.

That's when Whisper jumped into her lap. This of course caused the girl to let out a small scream but she quieted down soon enough realizing that there wasn't any danger yet. She looked at Whisper with a sort of mesmerized look.

Duo watched as she worked her magick on the young teenager as she brushed her face against the girls wrist and hand. The girl's body eased a bit and then all together as she collapsed back onto the couch petting the feline.

Duo let out a breath that he had been holding and started to approach her slowly. The girl stared at him with emerald green eyes not really able to move anymore. He brought the covers up below her chin and then started to walk to the kitchen.

"Whisper will keep you company for a little while as I get you something warm to drink."

When he got into the kitchen he opened up a cabinet and took out of it some herbs. He filled a pot up with water and put on the stove to boil. Once it started boiling he put the herbs in and waited.

'There's something strange about this girl,' he heard Whispers voice inside his head.

'Tell me about it,' he responded. 'I think she's a psychic.'

'Why would you think that?'

He told her about how she sent a telepathic message back to him while he was looking for her. While he did that he added some spices to the brew on the stove.

'Hmm…that is strange,' she said.

'But what does it mean?' he asked.

'I'm not sure,' she said and left it at that.

He strained the tea and poured it into one of his mugs. He brought it out to the girl. She sat up as he approached.

He handed her the mug and said, "Here, this will make you feel better."

She hesitated for a little while but eventually took it. She seemed to trust him a little better. He walked over to the fireplace and started to light a fire.

While he did that she looked about the room. It was of fair size. Not to big and not to small, but cozy. On the south wall was the fireplace. In front of that was the couch she was sitting on and a little to the right was a chair. A coffee table sat in between the pieces of furniture.

Taking sips of the herbal tea she watched the young man as he stood up from the fireplace and sat down in the chair.

He looked at her and with a small smile he asked, "How do you like it? It's not to hot is it?"

She shook her head.

"Good," he said sitting back in his chair. "So what's your name?"

She stared at her cup. He could tell that she didn't want to answer him.

"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," he said reassuringly.

They sat there in silence for a while after that. She finished her tea and Duo brought the cup into the kitchen. When he got back into the living room she was lying down and falling asleep.

"Feel any better?" he asked seeing that she had the color back in her skin and she wasn't shivering anymore.

Nodding she asked in a sweet voice, "Is your name Duo Maxwell?"

With a startled look he answered yes.

She smiled and then closed her eyes and fell asleep. He just stared at her wondering how the hell she knew who he was.

To Be Continued

<Firefly> So how was that?

<Corvus> actually that was pretty good. I feel really sorry for the girl. Is she another original character?

<Firefly> Yup.

<Corvus> She sounds really cute. What's her name?

<Firefly> I'm not telling. You just have to wait until I write the next chapter.

<Corvus> Fine. I don't really fell like arguing. Oh and why hasn't anyone reviewed yet?

<Firefly> Ya. I need to know what you think of this story. How can I know if you don't review?

<Corvus> How about you don't put up the next chapter until you get a hundred reviews.

<Firefly> No that's just cruel. And don't you want to read it soon.

<Corvus> Hey, I'm the muse. I get to read it as soon as you're done.

<Firefly> Ok. Hey everyone, unless I get some reviews you guys and Corvus don't get to read the next chapter.

<Corvus> Hey!!!! That's not fair.

<Firefly> Sure it is. R&R please.
