In The Darkness
Chapter 2
It was nearing Midnight and still nothing had happened. He'd been waiting for over two hours now. He was pacing within the circle of the Stonehenge.
Making an annoyed growl he lay down on the altar stone and stared up at the sky. The moon was almost full and high up in the sky. The stars shone brightly while casting their light over him.
He silently swore that if this was a trick he was going to boil that cat alive. He sat up and looked around, trying to find the little hairball. She really wasn't the type to pull pranks. She said that it was just a waste of time and energy. The scary thing was that he actually agreed with her.
He closed his eyes and thought back to his time while living on the streets and the Maxwell Church. He had always been a joker then. But he guessed after the church was destroyed some of his heart kind of died. And a little bit more was taken after the loss of Ravencorn. It's funny what the loss of loved ones could do to a person.
His memory strayed to the day she had found him:
It was snowing and there was already maybe two inches of it already on the ground. The child kept running. He didn't know how long it had been or how he had gotten to Earth or where the hell he was. But he could still see her cold dead body with her empty eyes staring back at him as he sat in all the smoking rubble of the church.
Why did they have to die? Why couldn't they have just lived their lives in happiness?
He tripped and fell face first into the snow. He still wore the priest outfit and the gold cross that Sister Helen gave him. His loosely braided hair was falling in front of his face and blowing every which way in the wind.
He stayed there in the snow. He buried his face deeper not wanting to move. He only wanted to die and end his miserable life so he could be with them.
That's when he heard the breathing. He could feel it too, right on the back of his neck. He froze, to scared to move. Then he started to hear growling.
He brought his gaze up to look in front of him and saw a bunch of wolves. There were about six of them and they all had their teeth bared and some were even drooling.
He felt a weight on his back then and another growl above him. He didn't have to look to know there was another. He couldn't move. Even if the wolf wasn't on his back he was too scared. He closed his eyes waiting for them to leave.
Then he realized that the growling had stopped. He opened his eyes to see and old woman maybe ten feet to the left of them. All the wolves were staring at her. They seemed like they were sort of in a trans. The old woman waved her hand and then the wolf on top of him started to walk away. A few seconds later the rest of them began to follow.
After they were gone the woman walked up to Duo. She stopped a few feet in front of him.
She really was old. Older than Duo originally thought and was wearing these long black robes. She was short and very thin. She had gray hair that almost looked as white as the snow and she was staring at him with her dark ruby colored eyes.
She frightened Duo. She reminded him of one of those witches he'd read about. You know, the ones that like to eat children.
She finally spoke, "Why are you out here in the forest child?"
Forest? Duo looked around to see that he was indeed within a clearing surrounded by lots of trees. He looked back at the woman not answering her question. She was still staring at him.
It wasn't a cold stare though he realized. It was filled with compassion and worry. But worry for what? It also didn't seem like she was looking at him directly but more like into his soul. He suddenly felt very uncomfortable.
He realized that his stomach, arms and legs were getting numb. He was still lying in the snow. That's about when the old woman smiled and held out her hand.
"Come with me child," she said, "you can stay at my home for the night."
Duo hesitated for a little bit but then finally got up and walked over to her. He took hold of her hand and they walked out of the forest together.
Duo was brought back to the present by a little voice inside of his head, 'Slipping away into the past are we? That's not like you.'
He turned his head to look to his left and found Whisper sitting on top of one of the fallen bluestone pillars. Her ice blue eyes were glowing in the moonlight giving a creepy supernatural look.
'Hn, what do you want now,' he replied, 'I swear if this is a trick…'
'This is no trick,' she hissed, 'Lady Brigit did indeed ask to speak with you. It is her choice of when she wishes to appear.'
'Well all I know is a little cat is going to be in a lot of pain if she's wrong,' he responded. He closed his eyes and lied back down.
'Don't get all fussy with me,' she said, 'After all I'm just the messenger.'
'How the hell do you even know the goddess Brigit?' he asked.
Whisper didn't answer him. He opened his eyes and looked over at her. She was looking up at the sky.
'I'm not the only one who met them on occasion.' She looked at him strait in the eyes and continued, 'Ravencorn spoke to the gods quite often. Especially after you came along.'
'And I suppose that's got something to do with this meeting,' he said.
'She sensed something about you,' she started, 'She felt that her saving you that night wasn't just a coincidence and spoke often with the deities about you. You had great power surrounding you, even as a child.'
'But what does that have to do with anything?' Duo asked, 'What did she talk to them about me for?'
'I'm not sure,' she answered, 'I was never allowed to accompany her in those conversations. But I can assure you that whatever is said here tonight will change your life forever.'
That he had no doubt of. Not everyone got to talk to one of the Higher Beings. But he couldn't help but wonder what they would want to meet him like this for. Many people just got visions if there was a task that the gods wanted you to perform, but never meetings like this.
Whisper continued to sit on the stone. She was worried for him. She would never admit to it, but she was. If what she feared was true then his life really was going to change. And it might not be for the better.
She remembered something that Ravencorn had told her once before she passed on:
"He's quite possibly the Chosen One Whisper. I want you to promise me that until his day of destiny comes you will protect him. I grow old and weary and I'm afraid I wont be able to stay by his side much longer."
She owed Ravencorn much. That's why she agreed to protect Duo. But he was still so young. For the Day of Destiny to be coming in such a short time from now was a sad thought. She only hoped that he had enough power to get through it all, alive.
The two of them sat there, both in their deep thoughts. It wasn't until the stones started to glow that they were pulled back to reality.
Duo stood up and stared at the center of the circle. A form was materializing there. It soon took the shape of a beautiful young lady.
She was a few inches taller than Duo and had shoulder length silver hair. She wore a gown the color of the night sky and held a staff with a fiery red stone at the top. She looked at him with her silver eyes that reminded him of Ravencorn's eyes. There was absolutely no question that she was a goddess.
She smiled and said with a sweet voice, "Welcome young Maxwell, the Chosen One."
