chapter 2

Duo woke up with a start, when he heard the sound of his sliding glass door closing,
he sat upright ribbing his eyes, it was 5:30 in the morning and he had only been asleep
for about 4 hours. He stood wrapping his blanket around him to ward off the chill of
the room and walked to to the door, through the frosted glass he could see Heero
fully dressed, leaning against the railing of his sixth story balcony looking out
over the snow covered city, Duo approached him cautiously, so not to alarm him and
gently placed the blanket across Heero's shoulders, Heero turned and gave a small smile,
Duo grabbed his hand and started to lead Heero back into the apartment but Heero stopped
and held something out for Duo to see, it was a lit cigarette, // he's afraid to smoke
inside// Duo nodded and continued to pull him inside. Once they were back in the apartment
Duo took a glass tumbler out of a cabinet and put a mall amount of water in it and gave
it to Heero to use as an ashtray, It was'nt until Duo got a fire going that he realized
the Heero had made breakfast, set out on the dining room table were three plates full of
eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast and coffee, Duo turned to ask why there was only three
plates he found Heero sound asleep on the sofa, Duo sighed and carefully
tucked the blanket around the sleeping boy.
" Duo?"
" Good morning, Sally." Duo said Without turning
" How's he doing?"
" He was up and awake long enough to cook us breakfast and smoke a cigarette."
Duo replied dropping the cigarette butt into the glass of water. Sally stepped
up to him and placed her hand on Heero's forehead.
" He still has a fever, I think we should let him rest for a few hours the get him
to my office." Duo Nodded and made his way to the dining room.
" Ya know, Sally, I don't remember having this much food in the house."
Sally looked around the kitchen and found empty shopping bags one of then still
had a receipt in it, form this morning.
" You didn't have this much food, he went out and bought it." Sally said as she
entered the dinning room holding up the receipt.
" What a remarkable boy." Duo breathed " Sally, how can anyone be so cruel?"
" I have no idea." she said sitting at the table next to him.
" I want to do every thing I can to help him, He deserves that much."
" yes he does, I..." she paused and picked up a note next to her plate, ' to Duo '
it said on the outside of the folded note," It's for you." Sally said handing it to Duo.
' Dear Duo:
I wanted to thank you for taking me in last night, I can only hope the breakfast for
you and your friends is enough, I'll be leaving soon, I don't want to be a burden on you.
thank you again.
Heero Yuy'
Duo sniffled and handed to note back to Sally who read it with tears filling her eyes.
" I'm Not going to let him leave." Duo said after a moment.
" I know and i'll help you as best as I can, but we don't have much time,
He's already 17, almost an adult, If your going to make a case here you have to hurry,
if he turns 18 the whole case could be shot.
" I know that Sally, thats why I called you last night, the sooner we have the
information, the better."
" I want you to be care full, your only 20 for heavens sake, your law firm is good,
it has a great success rate, but if Heero's father decides to fight back there are
hundreds of attorneys out there with many more years experience, I just don't want
to see you hurt, either of you." she finished by turning towards the living to look
at the sleeping boy.
" Well then, I think the first thing we have to do is get him into protective custody."
Wu-fei said joining them in the dining room.
" I want him to stay here." Duo said firmly.
" That can be arranged." Wu-fei replied
