Chapter 1: Lessons?

“Lessons?” Zechs growled at the un-phased Lady Une. “What the hell do I need lessons for?”

It had been about a month since he and Noin had returned from Relena's secret space projects. Things had gone pretty smooth, if he did say so himself, and he was looking forward to some downtime. But now it seemed he was in for more shit. Zechs tried to collect himself by looking around the Preventer office. It was quite lavish, to no surprise, considering the main financial backer was Relena. //She likes things too flashy,// Zechs concluded.

Une got up from her desk to look out the windows which overlooked the colony city. It was around 11:00 pm in the colony. It might sound ridiculous to have a meeting at this time of night, but for a dead man, it was a necessity. Une sighed and turned to him. “I know it sounds beyond imprudent for you to require lessons in physical combat, but to return you to life, it will be of more importance than you think.”

Zechs blinked at the woman. “Return me to life?”

“Yes.” Une strode over to him and leaned on the edge of her desk. “Your sister wishes to `bring you back to life', as it were.”

“My sister?” Zechs was a little taken aback. He figured he would be of more use to her as a dead man, for obvious reasons. Why bring him back to life? Zechs lifted his eyebrows. “Why?”

“Why what? Why bring you back to life, or why give you lessons?” Une asked motioning with her hands.

Zechs crossed his arms in front of him. “Both, I guess.”

“You know your sister. She doesn't believe you need live in the dark for the rest of your days. So, she wants to call a public zoo, oh sorry, I mean `press conference' and royally welcome you back to the light.”

Zechs smiled at her obvious irritation. “You sound displeased of my dear little sister's plan.” Zechs sat down, feeling more on same level as Une now.

“Bringing you back is all good and well, but to do it through a big flashy press conference is not the smartest plan that she's ever concocted. She must realize this too, since she's hiring you a sparring partner.”

“Sparring partner? You mean the so-called lessons?” Zechs just couldn't get over it. A sparring partner, what the hell would he need a sparring partner for?

“Yes. Since you will be publicly brought out as still an enemy, because of you actions at the end of the war, you won't be legally permitted to carry a gun for a while.” Une stated, never taking her eyes away from his. It was true. He would still be seen as an enemy. //All more the reason to stay dead//. “So, you will need to brush up on your hand to hand. Relena picked quite the sparring partner for you as well.”

“Alright, I'll bite. Who?” Zechs growled. Who would, or could, she get? He knew Chang was part of the Preventers, but the thought of sparing with the guy who took out Treize didn't sound very tempting. Too much hostility there. None of the other Preventers were even worth mentioning. The only other people Relena knew were the Gundam pilots. Zechs knew that Quatre and Trowa had been making quite the scene lately, with them dating, so he doubted it would be one of them. The loud mouth one, Duo, was a possibility. But he doubted the guy was a martial arts master. So the only one left was…

“Heero Yuy.” Une smiled. Zechs felt his stomach do a summersault. Yuy? Yuy, as in the guy he'd fought with throughout the whole entire war? As in the guy he had fantasies about since he first saw that tight, muscular body? //Oh shit//.

Heero knew, at least vaguely he hoped, that Zechs was interested in him. Their time in the Artic wasn't only just for dueling. Zechs had tried to seduce the quiet, blue-eyed Japanese boy, but to no avail. It almost came to the point where he was tempted to throw him down and have his way; but 03 was talented in keeping them company, whether he was welcome or not. Zechs had a sneaking suspicion that Trowa knew exactly what he was doing, too.

Une got up to sit behind her desk again. “One hell of a challenge, huh?”

Zechs struggled to come back down to earth. “How did she find him?” No one had seen hide nor hare of him since the disaster in December. He heard that 02 had been looking for him, along with the rest of the Gundam boys, but their search came up empty handed. If Heero didn't want to be found, the he wouldn't be.

“No idea. I asked the same thing and she just smiled at me.” Une answered.

“I see. Well, when do the lessons start?” Zechs said a bit too quickly.

“Why the sudden change in attitude?” Une smirked.

Zechs smiled back. “I like a challenge.”

“You going though training?” Noin laughed. She and Zechs were sharing a suite while they were in the colony. Noin had been sitting on the couch when Zechs came over to join her. “What the hell for?”

Zechs filled her in on the details as she tried desperately not to burst out laughing again. They had always been this way, the best of friends. They had tried being lovers, but that didn't pan out as well as they had hoped. But they remained close, and still loved each other, just not in the usual boy/girl fashion.

By the time he was done explaining the basics, Noin was shaking her head. “I agree with Une and the whole zoo theory, but lessons? Who could challenge you?”

Zechs smiled at her and raised his eyebrows. “Heero Yuy.”

Noin looked beyond surprised at first, and then a very knowing smile graced her face. “Oh, is that so? No wonder why you complied so quickly.”

“I do like a challenge.”

Noin got up and headed toward the mini bar. “Only not in the same area that Une and Relena are thinking.”

Zechs smiled. //God, she knows me too well//. “Too true. But you know I will enjoy the sparring, not just the thrill of the hunt.”

Noin headed back with two glasses of champagne. Sitting down, she handed one to Zechs. “A toast then, to second chances.” She winked.

“And first times,” he smirked, “hopefully.”

Noin playfully smacked him. “You hound.” They chinked their glasses together then drank the bubbly liquid. It was better tasting and lighter than the cheap stuff they usually got on their missions. With that thought, Zechs couldn't help wondering what Heero tasted like. Sweet, he was sure, very sweet.

A few days later, Zechs arrived in the Sanque Kingdom and was escorted to the palace where his lessons, he figured, were going to take place. He thought it would be a bit too obvious to the public if he stayed here, but oh well. It did have good security and all.

As Zechs and his entourage approached the room his sister was supposedly in, he heard some arguing coming from behind the door. All he could hear was something about not having an audience and something about a favor, then a door shutting.

The man who ushered Zechs into the palace, most likely a butler, knocked on the door for him. Zechs heard a sweet voice coming through the closed door say, “please, come in.”

Zechs slid in and was greeted with the sight of his little sister sitting down in a nice summer dress and, next to her on a table, tea ready for the reunion. Zechs couldn't help but smile at her. She had grown up beautifully, despite the times.

Relena smiled and got up to greet him. “Milliardo, wonderful to see you. Especially in the better circumstances,” Relena motioned him to sit down and waved Zechs's welcome caravan out.

Zechs smiled back. “I agree. This is the first time we have really been able to talk, little sister.”

Relena smiled and blushed at the little sister bit. //She likes being called that//, Zechs noted. “I have been wanting to talk to you ever since that thing back in December, but…”

“The mission was urgent, we both know that.” Zechs reached for his tea and took a sip, earl grey tea with a hint of fresh mint. She had good taste.

They found themselves talking for good over an hour, surprised that they had so much in common. They talked of books, pastimes and even the weather, which Zechs couldn't help but laugh at. How cliché. The small talk with his sister was very refreshing, but he was getting a little impatient. What about Heero and the sparring?

Relena was about to challenge Zechs to a game of chess when they were interrupted by a knock at the door. Relena beckoned the man in.

The same butler from before came in and bowed. “I'm sorry to intrude, your highnesses, but Miss Relena has a meeting with the colony delegates in ten minutes.”

Zechs was surprised that the man addressed him in the same manner as his sister. `Your Highness…' How long had it been since he had heard that.

“Oh, that's right. Damn.” Relena blushed at the curse she had just used. Zechs couldn't help but smile; she was definitely a Peacecraft. “I didn't even get to tell you about the lessons I have planned for you.”

Zechs shrugged, pretending it was nothing. “Well, just explain quickly, I guess.”

“Very well. As you know, Heero will be your sparring partner; I thought you both might enjoy that. And a few men will be here in a minute to take you to the summer cottage where you'll both be staying…”

“Alone?” Zechs interrupted. He cursed himself under his breath, //way to play it cool//. Luckily, Relena took it a different way, thinking he was worried about security.

“Yes and no. I was going to have a few of my best accompany you, but Heero said he didn't want an audience, and you most likely don't either. So, that's why I changed it to the summer cottage. It has some of the best security technology around. Heero said it would be enough, and I trust his judgment.”

“As do I,” Zechs agreed. What luck? Heero and himself all alone in the summer cottage? This couldn't be any better if Zechs had planned it himself.

Relena smiled as she got up. “Well, I guess I must be going. Work hard Milliardo, and of course have some fun. This is, after all, a vacation as well.”

Zechs got up and escorted her to the door, then watched as she walked down the hallway. She had no idea the gift she had just given him, and Heero had no idea what he had just gotten himself into. Zechs smiled a wolfish grin…//a vacation indeed//.
