Chapter 6: Evading the Enemy

Zechs woke up to a cheery voice. “Wake up sleepyhead, your breakfast is here!”

He seriously debated on rolling over and going back to sleep, until he recognized that voice and shot up. “Relena!?”

His little sister stood there with a sliver tray, smiling almost as bright as the sun was shining, radiantly dressed in a white and blue ladies suit. He was about to mutter a word welcome when he remembered that he had not fallen asleep alone. //Oh shit! Heero!//

Thank god the boy fell asleep on the other side of the bed so Relena hadn't noticed him yet; `yet' being the key word. Zechs gave Relena the most charming smile he could muster as he blindly searched for Heero with his hand. Nothing was there. Zechs smile grew into a more welcoming one; Heero must have woken up already and left, he realized with a sigh of relief. That would have been an interesting scene, considering he was sure his dear little sister had a crush on the good captain.

Zechs sat up strait and pulled the covers around himself. He might not have to worry about an extremely embarrassing situation now, but he was still naked under the covers, which was grounds for caution. Zechs straightened up and faced her in the way any gentleman would. “Breakfast in bed, dear sister?”

“I thought I might surprise you.” Relena walked over and placed the tray over his lap and sat down on the edge of the bed.

“You succeeded.” He smiled, lifting the top tray off the steaming pile of English waffles smothered in berries, making him doubt Relena had made it herself. Still, it was a sweet gesture. “It looks delicious.”

“Really? I'm glad. Noin said that I should have probably called. But I wanted to do something without all the usual formality.”

Zechs secretly thanked Noin for trying to stop her or at least giving him a moments notice, which was most likely what she was aiming for. Too bad Relena was a Peacecraft, stubborn to no end, or it might have worked.

Relena took her gaze off of him and looked towards the door. “I meant to surprise Heero as well, but he wasn't in his room.”

Zechs shrugged. “He probably woke early for some of his own training. He is quite dedicated.”

“True. He-” Relena was cut off by the sound of a phone ringing. Zechs recognized the ring, identifying it as his cell phone that should have been in his dinner jacket pocket on the floor. He glanced over the bed looking for it when he realized that all of the clothes that were thrown haphazardly on the floor last night were gone, including his jacket that he had just been too lazy to hang up. That would have been a lot of explaining //Nice job Yuy!//. But then, where was the ringing coming from?

Relena cocked her head from side to side searching for the sound as well until she glanced down at the floor. “Ah! Here it is. You must have dropped you phone, Milliardo.”

She retrieved it from the floor and handed it to him. //Why the hell was it down there?// Zechs wondered.

This was the last time he was ever going to listen to that stupid new voice, Heero swore to himself as he eyed the pair of white high heels that were merely a foot away. His old mission-oriented mind might not have been fun or entertaining, but it had never caused him the humiliation of having to hide under a bed, unclothed with semen dried in him. Damn that thing they call a `libido', he was officially going to ignore it, planning to shove it back in to the recess of his mind that it had crawled out of. He should have never made that silent pact with himself, deciding to follow that new feeling instead of the ones that had kept him alive all these years.

//Showing weakness to the enemy, breaking under torture, giving in to pleasures of the flesh, too slow to act in response of a threat…// the list went on and on, Heero moaned to himself. If Dr. J was still around, the old man would have shot him; or ordered himself to do it. Not that he would have argued, considering the situation he was now in, he would have thanked him for showing mercy.

Then again, being under here was better than what it would have been up there, given the circumstances. At least his old habits had saved him at the last second.

He had shot up out of bed as soon as he heard the front door shut earlier while Zechs didn't even stir. Heero's eyes grew wider when he recognized the female voice giving orders to two bodyguards coming from the corridor. //Relena! Shimata*!//.

His mind was in chaos, should he wake up Zechs? No, no time.

//Escape and avoid detection.//

For the first time in a long while, he was glad to hear that voice barking orders in his mind again. Heero slid out of bed, covering Zechs the best he could for Relena's arrival, and ran towards the door. The floor in front of it was covered in their discarded clothing.

//Retrieve and destroy the evidence.//

He scooped up all the pieces of clothing he saw and reached for the doorknob…in time to see in rotating on its own. He was too slow.

//Secure a feasibly defensible position.//

At a loss and with no time to think of anything clever, he darted under the bed just as the door was opening.

And now there he was, hiding under the bed on the cold wood floor, listening to Zechs making cheery talk with Relena while he clutched on to their clothes for warmth. Right now, he wouldn't even need an order to shoot himself, just a gun. Which he didn't, he grumbled to himself; another break in training. He damn near `screwed the pooch' to put it in Duo's terms, not that he was out of hot water yet. But all they have to do is leave and - -

Heero's heart damn near stopped as a phone in one of the clothes pockets began to ring //kuso!//. He could hear the bed shifting as the pair looked for the source of the noise. Heero shuffled through the clothes and found the offending object, but was at a loss. //What the hell do I do with it?//

//Discard any threat that may give away your position.//

Heero frowned at his own though; what was he going to do, throw it?

//If the threat is imminent, fight and die for the mission.//

Okay, so perhaps he wasn't happy to hear the whole of his old mentality. Not quite ready to throw in the towel, Heero slowly slid the phone by Relena's feet, all the while praying that she wouldn't look under the bed when she noticed it.

“Ah! Here it is. You must have dropped you phone, Milliardo.” Heero heard from Relena as she picked up the phone.

//Mission Complete.// Heero let out a sigh of relief. Digging through the clothes, he found his boxers and tried to slide them on, but determined there wasn't enough room under the bed to negotiate any level of movement. Discouraged, Heero laid there, listening to the one sided telephone conversation, praying that Zechs would hang up soon and usher Relena out of the room. Then all he would have to do is figure out how to get out of the room without being noticed.

Zechs took the phone from his sister and answered it. “Hello?”

“Zechs, it's me.” The voice on the phone replied.

Zechs knew that voice all too well. “Hello Noin, what can I do for you?”

“Calling to give you a heads-up, Relena is on her way there.”

He had to hand it to her, at least she tried. Oh well, he might as well tell her that she's too late, in a way that Relena doesn't pick up on, of course. “Ah yes, she made it here safely. It was quite the surprise.”

“I tried to call you last night, so don't blame me!” Noin accused. God, the woman knew him too well, she could pick up on his sarcasm even over the phone. “So I take it from your fake cheery demeanor that you weren't caught with your pants down.”

Zechs smiled; he couldn't wait to talk to her when he didn't have an audience, but he had to get this conversation over with for now. Well, perhaps a small bit of conversation… “Wish I could let you talk to Yuy, but Relena said he wasn't in his room. The Captain must have woken up early to workout. He did seem rather exhausted last night, however. Yuy is going to wear himself out on me at this rate.”

“Bragging with your sister present? Have you no shame Marquise? Anyway, I'm glad this didn't turn out as bad as it could have. Call me when you have a chance. Later.”

Zechs waited for her to hang up. “No problem, you didn't bother us, stop apologizing. Goodbye Noin.”

Turning off his phone, Zechs returned his attentions back on Relena with a smile.

//kono yaro*// Heero grumbled in his mind, while his face was blazing. Forget shooting himself. If a gun was present, Zechs would be dead for that little comment. He's just lucky that Relena was too pure to pick up on it. But he doubted Noin was.

“Miss Noin just wanted to make sure that you arrived safely.” Zechs said with an overly big brother tone.

Heero could hear Relena re-adjusting herself on the bed. “She worries too much. Although, when I was leaving, she said she'd rather I go with just the valet, or at least leave the guards in the car. I do not understand her sometimes; doesn't that sound a bit contradictory to you as well?”

“Perhaps she was afraid of Captain Yuy's reaction. He did warn everyone that on one was allowed to approach the premises, correct?”

“That is true. Speaking of, how are you and Heero getting along? I was afraid there may be some tension because of…past events.”

“Brilliant deduction,” Heero couldn't help but mumble inaudibly. But he did have to admit, he never really disliked the man, they just always seemed to be on opposite sides at every turn of the war. If anything, he considered him an honorable enemy.

“Very well actually.” Heero didn't need to see the man, he could hear the smirk in Zechs's voice. “We may have been enemies in the past, but I think we both decided to discard that fact as soon as we knew we would be sparring together. Neither of us has brought it up, now that I think back on it.”

“That is wonderful to hear!” Relena announced with enthusiasm. “I was hoping you would get along, or maybe even become friends, now that you both get to see different sides of each other. I doubt that in battle you were able to tell how intelligent yet kind Heero actually is; or that he noticed how deep and refined you are.”

Heero had to resist the urge to bang his head on the ground. Deep and Refined? //uso*// A compulsive sex maniac fit the bill better. Heero did know that Zechs had to have gone to an academy to be a lieutenant, therefore he had a very good education, but he had only seen hints of it. Mostly in his demeanor, and the way he drank wine and actually knew something about it. But other than that, pure soldier on all accounts.

“You speak fondly of the good Captain Yuy dear sister. Is there a specific reason you want us to get along?” Heero could hear the insinuation in Zechs's voice but couldn't quite grasp what he was talking about. Why would Relena care if they got along?

“I-I just thought you two might have a lot in common, that's all.” Relena sounded embarrassed about something. Perhaps Zechs would be able to embarrass Relena enough to get her out of the room…Heero hoped at least.

“I see. Well, my food is getting cold. Shall we eat together in the dinning room?” Hearing his words, Heero silently thanked Zechs; he could finally get out of here!

Heero listened as Relena left with the tray and Zechs got up to put on his robe. A first, Heero was going to slide out from under the bed, but his pride kept him rooted where he was. The idea of crawling out from under the bed, nude, face blazing red, right in from of the man was almost intolerable. So, he waited until Zechs left the room as well.

Finally in the clear, Heero slid out from his hiding place and slipped on his boxers. He was about to turn the knob on the door to leave when he caught the sound of two men talking in the hallway. “Miss Relena said to stay at our posts, but she never said where our posts were.”

“I suggest we stay by the door then. This hallway connects to almost everywhere anyway.”

This time, Heero did hit his head on the wall. Wonderful, now he had to evade the two idiots that came with Relena. Perhaps he could just wait until everyone left. Then again, this was Relena…the woman can talk for ages. Heero was tempted to punch the wall out of frustration when an idea came to him. If the guards were by the door, then they were standing right next to the security system monitors for the cameras outside. If he made a distraction, they would go and at least check it out for a while...at least he hoped.

Turning around, Heero strode towards the window, picking up two pillows from the love seat on the way, and opened the window. Locating the cameras, he threw one of pillows right in front of one camera then the other in front of another camera. //This should give the sensors the idea that something was moving closer to the cottage, so the proximity light will flash near the monitors//.

With that done, he ran to the other side of the room and listened through the wall. Heero was about to groan in annoyance and try it again until he finally heard them. “Hey, that light thing is flashing. Isn't that the proximity alarm?”

Heero could hear some typing as the other guard spoke up. “Yea, but it's just the cautionary one. It was probably just a squirrel or something that it picked up.”

“Still, with both of the Peacecrafts here, we should go check it out.”

“Fine, I'll go, you stay here.”

Heero heard the door open and close. “Chikusho*, one stayed,” Heero mumbled. He leaned his forehead against the wall in thought when a grin dawned upon his face. Still with the same smile, he made his way towards the window once again, this time picking up the first blunt object he came across, which happened to be a small abstract sculpture, graciously made out of wood, and chucked it at the unsuspecting guard outside. The sculpture hit his head with a dull thud and the guard fell to the ground, spewing out any cuss words he could manage in his concussed daze. Heero ducked down and waited.

“Son of a Bitch. Maison, get out here!” The confounded guard bellowed.

Heero's grin widened as he heard the last guard in the hall walk outside. Being sure not to waste the chance, Heero made it to the door and slid out to the now unoccupied hallway. Heero couldn't stop the grin on his face…he had rather enjoyed that.

He walked through the hall door and closed it quietly behind him. Through the next door was Relena and Zechs, but it would be easy enough to slip through undetected. With Relena yapping, a child could get by. He was about to walk towards the next door in triumph when he heard the sound of two bumbling guard re-enter the house and walk in his direction. Heero's eyebrows shot up as he realized that they would have to report the disturbance he caused. Meaning he was in between the hired hand walking his way and Relena and Zechs.

“Yame*!” Heero muttered. There was no way he could sneak through the next room quick enough.

Heero scanned the barren hallway, //why the fuck do old houses have so many doors!//.
At a loss, Heero looked up, then side to side, taking note the width of the hallway. As a way of rescue finally dawned on him, Heero put his hands on one wall and his feet on the other, and proceeded to climb up the hallway. He was just above the door frame when the guards walked through the hallway and into the kitchen.

“They didn't see me,” he sighed in relief. Now all that was left was to get down before the came back through, considering this trick only works above the door frame they walk through.

Relena seemed to have plenty to tell Zechs, as she did not stop the whole time they were eating. He had to admit it was pleasant that they didn't feel too estranged from each other, but when Relena wasn't in politician mode, she was a full blown female teenager. She could talk for days to a person she saw just yesterday, let alone with Zechs, whom she knew barely anything about.

After a while, Zechs had resorted to smiling and nodding as opposed to trying to get a word in. He was a little relieved when the guards came in to report a disturbance.

They walked in and said the usual droning before they actually told them what happened. “I was surveying the perimeter since the proximity alarm went off and someone hit me over the head, sir. I called for back-up but Maison didn't see anyone, sir.”

Zechs couldn't help but chuckle. He was pretty sure who the culprit was. “Honestly, you're probably lucky you were just knocked over the head. That,” Zechs motioned to the bump forming on the guards head, “was probably a warning shot. Next time Captain Yuy may use a real gun.”

The guards both went noticeably pale at the idea as they straightened up to salute. “Sir, we'll be more careful next time, sir.”

Zechs was about order them back to their post when everyone heard a loud thud coming from the hallway.

Relena stood up. “What was that?”

The hired hand went out to investigate, but came back empty handed. As they saluted once again, Zechs ordered them to their posts. He didn't think it was something to worry about, considering it was most likely Heero screwing with the befuddled guards' heads since they dared to disobey him.

“That was strange,” Relena stated after the two left. “It almost sounded like someone had fallen.”

They both shrugged and started their conversation once again. Zechs could only hope Heero would arrive soon to save him.

Heero leaned against his door, finally in the sanctuary of his own room. Climbing up the wall to avoid detection was an amazing idea, until he fell flat faced from his hiding place. Heero rubbed his abused stomach gingerly. Luckily, he caught himself in time so he didn't completely kiss the floor. But he couldn't believe he fell in the first place. Was he that out of shape?

Heero scowled at himself as he got up and jumped in the shower, finally able to wash off the evidence of last night's idiocy. As soon as he thought of a way, he was going to get Zechs back for all of this.
