"Oh, I don't think so Marquis! It's bad enough that I'm stuck in the same apartment as you. I will not sleep on the floor."
The blondes eyes flashed at him coldly as he turned to give Duo a withering look, though the effect was somewhat lost with his red, swollen nose. "Either you sleep on the floor or you sleep outside. Which would you rather?"
"Neither," Duo spat and threw his duffel bag down on the dusty and overstuffed sofa. He turned back to Zechs with just as much defiance as the blonde had shown. "I'll be damned if you get that bed, even if it doesn't look none too healthy. I've been fighting for this cause longer than you and I out-rank you."
"By one position! You don't even get a higher pay than mine. Besides you can just sleep on the couch."
"That's not the point. And have you seen the couch? It's a frickin' love seat, moron! I couldn't sleep on the damn thing if I even wanted to. I may be short, but not that short."
"You are sleeping on the floor," Zechs growled.
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."
"NO."
"FINE!" Zechs erupted, throwing up his hands. "We'll both sleep on the floor. Are you happy?"
Duo crossed his arms in front of his chest and glared. "No. But I'll deal with it."
Zechs 'humph'ed and turned to put his things in the single drawer the tiny apartment housed. He'd be stuck with Duo for at least the next two weeks within a confined area. They'd never make it that long. One of them if not both of them were going to loose their control and someone was going to get hurt. It was all Une's fault too. Coming up with the crackpot idea of drawing partners from a hat. Jesus, who came up with ideas such as these? It would have been much better to talk to the psychiatrist and simply match up their charts. It would have been a lot smarter than putting together two people who hated each other so much that people feared for their lives when in the same area of the two. Heaven forbid they should get caught in the crossfire.
Come to think of it, Une had changed Wufei's partner becaue the younger man refused to work with a woman. Why couldn't the bitch lady have changed their arrangements as well? It's not as if Wufei and Heero really had to be together. Or Quatre and Trowa and Sally and Noin. Any of those six could have broken up so that Zechs and Duo wouldn't have had to been paired together. So why had Une left them the way they were, despite their hostilities. Didn't that put the mission in danger or something, if the two partners didn't get along well together?
With a sigh he pushed his silvery bangs away from his face. It wasn't as if he'd always felt this way towards Duo. In fact, during the war he'd had some rather interesting dreams after seeing the American's picture in a file. No, he'd felt no animosity towards Duo whatsoever when the other man had started at the Preventers. It had been Duo who had started this entire hate/hate relationship. Zechs had been nothing but polite to his comrade and in return Duo had snuffed him, completely ignored any attempts Zechs had made at apologizing for what had happened during the war. A first the blonde had assumed that Duo still thought of him as the enemy, but the youth's feelings hadn't seemed to get any better. Had gotten worse in fact. Zechs had realized that it was something more personal.
Duo was such a mystery to him. He knew very little about his partners past or any of his likes and dislikes. He'd never let him get close enough. Zechs knew only what he'd observed for himself and from what others had let slip while talking to him. Apparently Duo had never been someone to hold grudges or take a disliking to someone he didn't even know that well. So, why was it that Zechs had this effect on him?
Well, just thinking about the problem wasn't going to do anything about it. With a great deal of resignation, Zech's lay his sleeping blanket out on the floor, making sure that he would be far away from Duo. Now the American Preventer would just have to set up his own bedding on the other side of the room, with the fought-over bed between them.
It would probably be hard to sleep, considering there was no carpet and he suspected both of them had become a little soft since the war had been ended. Duo probably hadn't been forced to sleep on the cold, hard ground since then, and he knew he certainly hadn't. No, usually he slept in a big, warm bed, completely by himself and feeling lonely most nights.
Zechs hadn't had a lover since Trieze's passing and even before that they hadn't had many occasions to be together. Things had started to taper off towards the end, Zechs losing much of his interest in the charming general. He very much doubted they'd be together if the other man had lived and suspected Trieze himself had know it as well. The ginger haired mans death had still hurt, as they really had been good friends, but it wasn't the heart-wrenching loss that usually came with the death of a lover.
So, he had stayed celibate for the better part of two years, not out of mourning, but because he couldn't find anyone. Somewhere along the lines his standards had become higher. Now there just didn't seem to be anyone who seemed good enough. Maybe this was not a good thing considering that he'd been depressed, lonely and to put things bluntly damn horny.
Of course thinking about this all right now wasn't really going to help him any. There was only one other person in this apartment and he'd
As he walked back out to the living room he saw that Duo was setting up the mission equipment. Just a video camera, a telescope and a computer, all normal equipment for surveillance mission. This week was definitely not looking up. A surveillance mission wasn't exactly the most stimulating of missions. The two stuck together in the tiny apartment, bored out of their minds. Tempers were definitely going to skip the whole flicker thing and head straight to inferno.
"Why don't you go pick up some groceries while I do this?" Duo's voice wasn't actually stating a request, but more of a demand, one that warned Zech's against refusing. So, with a slight grumble, Zechs grabbed his jacket and took off for the closest super mart.
The slight bite in the air was welcomed as he took the sharp scent of the autumn wind. Another year would be over, one year of peace. Another year of loneliness, a year where he lay alone in his queen-sized bed, dreaming a lover that wasn't there. The isolation was like a black void blanketing his life. It swallowed the days an months, leaving misery in its wake.
The doors of the supermarket swished open. He sighed quietly as he grabbed the necessities and took off back to the apartment. As he was walking back a certain shop caught his eye. The liquor store.
'What the hell…' he thought as he headed into the store. 'I'm gonna need it eventually.'
