Description: Duo get's stuck with who he considers the worst possible partner during a Preventers mission, but will this mission turn out a bit more appealing then what he at first assumed.

"You've gotta be kiddin' me!" Duo burst out angrily. "I can't do a mission with him!"
"Sorry, Mr. Maxwell," Lady Une stated calmly. "The names were drawn from a hat. It was complete chance that you were paired with Mr. Peacecraft."
The irate teenager snorted, looking pointedly at Trowa and Quatre who stood at the other side of the room. "I highly doubt that it's just chance that they were put together. Or Heero and 'Fei or Sally and Noin for that matter."
"Are you saying that I'm lying, Duo," Une's voice had gone icy cool. The voice that could be most described as colonel mode.
"N-no," the braided ex-pilot backed up a few steps until the wall confronted his back. He may have faced a few hundred mobile suits without flinching, but facing the colonels wrath was not something anyone looked forward to. Especially someone who received a pay check from the woman. "I-it's just it seems... unlikely."
The European woman's eyes narrowed but she nodded. "Wufei was originally paired with Noin, but he refused to participate in the mission if he was working with a woman. We had no choice but to pair him with another man and Heero seems to be the only other male he seems to tolerate. Trowa and Quatre were merely coincidence."
Duo nodded emphatically but inside he was sceptical. Everyone knew how hostile he and Zechs were towards each other. Even Heero wasn't as bad as him and the two had been mortal enemies since the beginning of the war. Duo himself couldn't explain his feelings. There was just something about the blonde that he didn't seem to like.
He looked at the tall figure from the corner of his eye. The longhaired man, to all appearances, seemed to be sleeping. Of course Duo was not fooled. The man was a little too relaxed. From all the years he had worked with Heero he could tell when someone was faking. It had been an act that the Wing pilot had used in order to avoid having to put up with his endless chatter. Duo had learned when Heero was sleeping just to spite the Japanese youth.
A smirk curved the ex-'Scythe pilots lips as he thought back to the time he had pretended to get himself off while Heero had been 'sleeping'. It seemed that for at least a week his partner hadn't been able to look at him without blushing. That was what had made life worth living. Being able to torcher his friends. To see the Perfect Soldier blush was just an extra bonus as far as he was concerned.
His gaze turned toward the Japanese boy and he smirked as he noticed Heero's hand planted firmly on Wufei's firm rear. For two people who were trying to hide their relationship they certainly were public about it! Duo couldn't understand why they just didn't tell someone about it. It wasn't like everyone else hadn't noticed. There were way too many times when strange noised had come from one of a storage closet and the only two missing happened to be those two.
Quatre and Trowa seemed to be best friends but Duo knew that there had been something more during the war. He wasn't sure if they were still an item. They never went home together, there was no sneaking out for the two of them. In fact whenever either one of them did go missing it was alone. Quatre could almost always be found at home, in his manor. And the only time Trowa left his work was to calm down Gwen. And everyone knew that the two hated each other.
The other Preventer, Gwen, had been found in an old OZ lab. She'd been meant to be OZ's version of Heero Yuy, but had been too wild for them to handle so the experiment had been aborted and she had been left to fend for herself. Some of her training would shine through, but mostly she was just an out of control teenager no one knew what to do with. She couldn't be let out into the public and they wouldn't go as far as to lock up a fairly innocent girl, so she was with the Preventers. Gwen wasn't exactly sane. Some of the things that OZ had done to her during her 'training' hadn't been exactly humane. So every time she went a little over the deep end Trowa was sent in to get her under control.
Quatre and Duo were the only other two that came close to being able to handle her, Quatre because of his empathy and Duo because when normal their personalities were a fair bit alike.
Gwen was now sitting at the front of the conference room table, feet on the table and arms crossed in front of her chest. She hated authority and rebelled against it at every chance she got. Which was why she was hardly ever given a field mission. This time she'd be staying behind with Une. Which didn't seem like the smartest thing to do with her. Duo did not want to know what she'd do to the office in his absence.
Une dismissed them and Duo took off out of there, grumbling quietly.
Gwen stepped up next to him and smiled. Duo was relieved to see that there wasn't that insane gleam in her eyes that would tell she was going through one of her phases.
"So," she said. "You ain't too happy to be placed with Sexy Zechsy. Why?"
"I don't know. I just don't like him. I used to fight him during the war. It's kinda weird to be working with him now, after he tried to blow up Earth just a little more then a year ago."
"I can understand that, but I think there's more to it."
"It doesn't matter what you think," Duo snapped, already irritated. "Now, if you don't mind, I have a mission to get ready for."
He felt her glare as he stalked away and knew he'd live to regret that. She held grudges until she could intact her revenge. Looking at her funny could set her off. Snapping at her was worse.
As soon as he reached his apartment he packed his things and headed back to HQ. Zechs met him at the door and he glared up at the blonde. Zechs gazed down, expression totally amused. Duo was about ready to kick his ass, never mind that Zechs was a full foot taller than him.
"What do you want?" Duo demanded when the blonde kept silent.
"Oh, nothing," Zechs' deep voice was full of amusement. "Just making sure that you came back."
Violet eyes narrowed dangerously. "It's a mission. I have no choice but to work with you. I would not back out of this because of my hostility towards a partner. I'm better than that."
Pale eyebrows shot up. "Really? Well that's news to me."
Duo launched himself at the taller man but jerked back when his braid was caught by someone standing behind him. He spun around furiously and came face to face with Gwen. She stood just inside the lobby doors, hands on her hips, glaring at him.
'Uh oh,' he thought before she punched him full force in the face. Pain flared up in his nose as it began to gush blood.
"I do not like to be snapped at!" She growled and pushed a handkerchief into his hand before pivoting and stalking off. Trowa would take care of her latter.
Laughter filled the lobby and Duo turned around to see Zechs holding his ribs while he laughed himself to tears. "Looks like the minx did my job for me!"
Duo grumbled and before Zechs could gain control of himself he gave the blonde a bloody nose to match his own. Then he turned and walked away, followed by some interesting curses.
People were going to regret ever putting the two in a mission together. They'd end up killing each other before this whole thing was through.
