Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ Mission Complete ❯ Nice To Meet You ( Chapter 37 )
Nice to Meet You
The e-mail said nothing about coming unarmed, so that's how you end up at Oak Park at 2:00 PM the next day, a gun hidden in your jacket and your pockets full of explosives, along with a dagger in each boot and a few throwing knives up your sleeves. Well, if nothing else, no one can say you're completely careless. You wander around for half an hour before realizing that Oak Park is a pretty large place, and, deciding to let him come to you, you head to the empty field near the playground, where four paths meet in the middle of a meadow, forming a large circle that houses a fountain. The paths are surrounded by all sorts of flowers, and you sit on one of the benches on the outside of the circle, watching absently as small children run around the fountain, screaming as they get splashed by their friends and laughing shrilly. You smile slightly, remembering when you were as young as them, though you don't recall ever being that innocent. But then again, they've seen almost nothing of war for the past two years, while everyone in your time was forced to grow up with it as a fact of life. That could pretty much kill anyone's innocence at an early age.
Shaking yourself from that depressing train of thought, you frown slightly as you glance around. Where is he? It's almost time for the two of you to meet, and you haven't seen him anywhere. Thinking that this might actually prove to be a wild-goose chase, you stand up, about to leave, when you see him sitting on one of the benches on the other side of the field. Heero has one arm slung over the back of the bench and is staring off to the side, obviously deep in thought. Your breath catches as you stare at him; he looks so sad and lonely there by himself… as well as being one of the most gorgeous guys you've ever seen. You walk over to him, skirting the fountain and the playing kids, and stop in front of him. Heero snaps out of it and looks up at you, and you smile as you take a seat next to you.
"Hey. So do you mind telling me just why you brought me here or is this about last night… Heero Yuy?"
Heero's eyes flash with an unknown emotion as he looks at you. "How did you find out it was me?"
You shrug. "I just looked at the excess data on that e-mail that you sent me. I came up with your last name and looked through the Preventers and OZ databases." You send him a sideways glance. "You didn't tell me you were - you didn't tell me who you really are."
Heero looks away from you. "Hn. It wasn't important at the time. But…" You take a quick look at him as he trails off, and he's staring straight into your eyes with those beautiful Prussian blue orbs of his. "I'm impressed that you found out so much about me, and that you were able to track that e-mail."
You smile as you lean back, staring up at the sky. "All in a day's work, Heero. But I don't suppose you called me here just to chitchat. What's up?"
"Well, for one thing, I have this for you." Heero hands you your ID card, and you take it with a nod of thanks. "And for another, I did some research on you too."
You send him a half-amused look. "Really? Did you come up with anything? Anything at all, I mean."
"Yes," he answers shortly.
"Huh?" You blink. "Where'd you look? I try to keep a low profile, and by that I mean I try not to legally exist."
Heero shrugs. "In the Winner database. If you found out who I was, you know about the others. Quatre let me use it to do some background research on you."
"And what did you find out?"
"You lived on Colony L6-X16789," he answers. "The one that was revealed to house the main headquarters of the rebels, and that was later destroyed when OZ came to suppress them."
You close your eyes for a split second, forcing back the memories, before you open them again. "Yeah. So?"
"And during the Eve wars, you were one of the rebel MS pilots. Actually, you joined up with former Alliance soldiers to fight against OZ at one point," Heero continues.
"And your point would be what exactly?"
Heero shoots you an unreadable look. "I happened to recognize that particular gang of rebels. Does the name Sally Po ring a bell?"
"Sally?" you ask excitedly, almost bouncing out of your seat. "You know her? How is she? What's she up to now? How's everything going for her?"
Heero pushes you back down onto the bench, repressing a sigh. "Yes, I know her, she's doing well, she's working with Preventers, and she's happy with her life the way it is now. As soon as I saw that listing, I contacted her, and Sally vouched for you. I trust her on her word, so I'm certain that you're really against OZ."
You roll your eyes. "Of course, you could've come to the same conclusion if you'd just listened to me."
"Hn." Heero obviously doesn't think that's worth a proper answer. "But I did want to know a few more things. You're obviously not working alone. Who do you work for, and why didn't he or she join Preventers instead of creating another organization?"
You shrug. "Dunno. You'd have to ask him, not me. As to whom I work for, that's simple. A man who doesn't like OZ, and who's decided to stop them without getting the government involved."
"You're not going to tell me any more, are you?" Heero asks.
You shake your head. "Well, that depends on how top-secret it is. I won't answer you if you ask any more about who I work for, but if you want to question my motives or how devoted I am to stopping OZ…"
"I already know your motives," he tells you. "Your records provide enough information for me to figure them out. And according to Sally, you'll try to defeat OZ at almost any cost. But why do you work for them and not Preventers?"
"Why do I… hm, good question. I guess it's because Preventers has a strict code of laws, what you can and can't do… like you said, I used to be a rebel. I don't like the structured governmental system as much as more freedom to do what I want…" you sigh. "I just don't like saying I work for the government is all, I guess. And besides, I think it's kinda fun to be working for a top-secret group."
Heero studies you for a moment. "…Come with me," he finally says.
You cock an eyebrow. " 'Come with you?' Haven't we gone over this already? The answer's no."
"I just want to take you somewhere to meet a few people," he tells you. "I can promise that there won't be any danger."
You stare at him. "And can I take your word on that?"
A brief smile appears on his face. "On my honor as a Gundam pilot, I can promise you that you won't get hurt."
Choice time! Do you go with Heero and hope for the best, now that you know he's somewhat trustworthy? Besides, it's not like he'll lead you to an OZ base. - go to page sixty-nine
Or do you ask why? Being curious has very little to do with it; you're just being a little cautious is all. If he really has a good reason for doing this, he'll tell you where he's bringing you and why. - go to page seventy
