Chapter 1 - The Dragon's Discovery
By Angel Love
Author's Notes: This isn't a songfic series. I have just added songs to the chapters in an effort to bring out the feelings. Just a warning. This is gonna be a tear jearker...well at least I hope it will be. I got the idea for this story when I was listening to Diamond Rio's 'One More Day'. And hopefully somewhere in the ficcy I will be able to insert that song!
Disclaimers: I don't own Gundam Wing...*sigh* I only wish I did! I don't own 'That's the Beat of a Heart'. It is owned by The Warren Brothers, Sara Evans and their respective record companies.
A lone figure stood on the top of a hill. His brown hair blowing in the wind, Prussian blue eyes filled with a deep sadness. He couldn't seem to get his ever-present mask to stay on his face, so his sadness shone through. And a lone tear fell silently down his cheek.
His voice was husky with grief when he finally spoke. "It's been a year. And I still wish for the same thing, one more day with you."

Two years ago
Preventer's Headquarters:
Wufei was glaring at his computer screen, but he wasn't even seeing what was on it. Instead his mind was on an argument, if one could call it that, that he had with the Vice-Foreign Minister that morning.
**Flashback**
"Wufei," a soft, yet commanding voice called out through the corridors, causing the dark-haired man to stop abruptly in his tracks. He sighed before dawning a mask over his features and turned around to face the young woman behind him.
She stood there waiting patiently for him, looking serene in her light blue suit and her honey-blonde hair pulled back by a matching ribbon. But her sky-blue eyes spoke volumes on how unhappy she really was. And he was the source of her unhappiness at the moment.
"Vice-Foreign Minister Darlain," Wufei greeted politely.
The young woman's eyes flashed with annoyance. "I need to speak with you about your latest mission."
Wufei narrowed his black eyes at her but nodded his head for her to continue.
"You know that Preventer's rules state that you should try to contain a suspect for questioning, however you decided not to follow that."
Wufei crossed his arms over his chest. "They were terrorists. And were dealt with as such."
Relena stepped closer to him, her tone slightly strained but still holding its polite tones. "They should have been brought in for questioning."
"It would have only delayed the inevitable," he said, also taking a step forward and also keeping a civil and polite tone.
"So you chose to use violence and wipe out their entire base before we could find out just how far they had gone with their plans." She took a step closer to him. "Or just what their plans were."
"I am a Preventer. I put out fires. If we take them out they won't succeed with any of their plans," Wufei stressed, taking another step towards the steaming woman in front of him, bringing them within inches of each other. "And we both know that their plans were to disrupt the peace."
Neither were willing to back down. Both arguing their sides without raising their voices and keeping civil tones. They probably would have gone unnoticed if they had not been who they were. The vice-foreign minister and the ex-gundam pilot were well known around the headquarters. In fact, their arguments, just like this one, were seen quite frequently by those who worked there.
Sally, a young blond with her hair in two twisted pigtails, walked into the hall and noticed a small gathering just outside her office. She smirked knowing just whom it was that was causing the excitement.
Her smirked widened when she saw the two very determined people standing nose to nose. It always amazed her how neither would ever yell at the other, although she was sure that both wanted to strangle the other's neck.
"Hello Relena," she called out, startling the young politician and causing her to back a little away from Wufei.
"Oh, hello Sally." Relena gave the other woman a bright smile, her whole face transforming from controlled anger to pure delight. She then looked at her watch and frowned slightly. "I must go. I have a doctor's appointment I have to be at in a half an hour. You and I must catch up some other time," she said cheerily to Sally.
She gave Wufei one last hard look, letting him know that he had not heard the last of this conversation, causing him to sigh inwardly.
**end of flashback**
"Damn annoying woman," he muttered under his breath. He turned when he heard the familiar chuckle of his partner behind him.
"Wufei, why don't you give her a chance?" Sally asked her Chinese partner.
Wufei narrowed his black eyes at her. "And just follow every word she says just as everyone does?"
Sally brushed a blond pigtail back and narrowed her blue eyes at him. "I am not just one of the pack that follows Relena around." She put a strong emphasis on the not, letting him know just how much that had hurt and irritated her.
"I didn't mean it that way," Wufei stated, closing his eyes briefly. He loved arguing with her, but he hated to think that he would ever hurt her feelings. She was one of the few people whom he could count on a strong friend.
"I know, Wufei," Sally's voice softened. "Just give her a chance. After all, why do you think that the other pilot's care for her so much?"
Wufei looked up at Sally to see her leaving the room. She turned just as she opened the door and smiled broadly at him. "Why do you think that Heero was so willing to fight you? He believed in her. Wouldn't it be an honorable thing for you do by giving her chance?" With that she disappeared out the door.
Wufei sat for a minute thinking about what Sally had just said. Suddenly he knew what he had to do. He got up and retrieved his jacket from the back of the chair and headed for the door. Just as he was stepping through he heard Sally call out to him. He turned to meet her gaze.
"You have the next few days off," she smiled smugly at him.
"Damn woman," Wufei muttered walking out the door, knowing that Sally was grinning more broadly as he walked out. She always did have a way of getting him to do things when she wanted him to and somehow he always fell for it.

Residence of Relena Dorlian:
Relena was sitting alone in the dark in the middle of her living room floor. Her head bowed so her golden silky hair covered her face, hiding her misery from view. She was still wearing her suit from earlier that day but it now looked as wrinkled as the crumpled jacket that lay forgotten next to her.
~ Sometimes it's hard to don't wanna look over your shoulder
'Cause you don't want to remember where you've been ~
That was how Wufei found her. He had come to see if he would be able to find some common ground with the former princess.
He was astonished when she didn't respond to her name. He reached over and flipped on a lamp flooding the room with light.
His eyes quickly traveled over Relena, noting that she still didn't respond to his presence. It annoyed him, yet concerned him at the same time. He took in her disheveled appearance and felt his concern rise a little. He had never seen her look anything less than perfect. Then he saw the paper that sat on the floor in front of her. He edged closer to it, a sudden unknown fear creeping up on him.
~ There'll come a time you die,
If you could only hold her
'Cause I know that's where I am ~
Warily he picked up the paper and began to read. By the time he was done he had sunk to his knees in front of her. His black eyes filled with concern as he lifted them slowly to look at Relena, just to find that she was watching him, the misery in her steady gaze told him everything he had just read was true.
"Relena..." he began, using her first name for the first time.
She stopped him, by holding up a hand. Her voice barely above a whisper, "Please, don't tell anyone what is in that." Her eyes begged him to understand.

He searched her face before finally nodding. Even though she was visibly a little shaky, he finally saw the strength that the other pilots had already found in the vice-foreign minister. He could clearly see what drew Heero to her in the first place, what drew everyone to her, why they all felt the need to protect her. He suddenly felt a strong sense of protectiveness fill him.
"Wufei," her voice was hesitant. "I... I need..." she stumbled off and looked away. A single tear sliding down her face as she closed her eyes. She hated to show such weakness in front of the man that had always considered her so weak. It was like proving to him that she was every bad thing that he thought she was.
Wufei tucked a finger under her chin moving her face up to look at him again, showing Relena a gentleness that no other had ever seen. "What ever it is, I will gladly help you," his voice sure and strong.
~ Look inside and find the part that's leading you
'Cause that's the beat of a heart ~
"Can you find Heero, please," her voice shook even harder. "I want to tell him how I feel before I..." she trailed off again unable to say the words out loud.
"Of course," Wufei said, his black eyes shown with understanding. Then he gently wrapped his arms around her, holding her close to him as the tears began to fall. 'She is too young,' he thought. 'She deserves happiness. Not this.' Some how the princess that he thought he despised had wormed her way into his heart. He didn't understand the pain he was feeling now; his heart suddenly felt as if it were ripping in two. All for a woman whom he never realized he did indeed respect and trust.

Sometimes you'll drown it out with all your tears ~
He held her for a long time, listening to her sob softly. He was grateful that he was able to be here for her in such a way. He didn't realize that as he held her he was building a bond between them that would never break.
~ There'll come a time when you hear it and you'll wonder
"Where in the world have I been?" ~
Finally Relena's sobs gradually died down to a few sniffles. She stayed leaning against Wufei, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart, it somehow comforting to her in her despair. She was slightly startled when he spoke.
"I was married once," his voice soft.

You may find all your dreams have already come true ~
Relena didn't move for fear that he would realize that it was her he was talking to.
"I have never told anyone about Meriam, not even Sally."
Relena pulled away, realizing that he was indeed opening up to her. Her blue eyes meet his black ones as she asked him silently why.
~ Look inside and find the part that's leading you,
'Cause that's the beat of a heart
No one can tell you how to get there
It's a road you take all by yourself ~
Wufei offered her a small smile. "I guess I finally realized that you are a wonderful person."
Relena blushed slightly at the comment, but Wufei didn't notice since her cheeks were already red from her crying, in fact it seemed as if he didn't even notice that he made the comment. "What happened to her?" she asked softly.
~ (All by yourself)
All by yourself ~
"She died in my arms after a fight with OZ," he said, his voice distant as he remembered that day. "She called herself Nataku. But she just wasn't strong enough to fight them."
"Oh I am so sorry," Relena whispered.
Wufei's eyes held a distant look as he was lost for a moment in the past. He could almost feel the weight of his Nataku on his shoulder as she silently passed away in the field of flowers. The flowers she died to protect. The same flowers that were destroyed by Oz a short time later when they blew up his colony.
~ So listen with all your heart
Hold it inside forever
You may find all your dreams have already come true ~
"Wufei?" Relena's soft voice pulled him back into the present and he looked into her eyes. She could clearly see his pain.
~ Look inside and find the part that's leading you
'Cause that's the beat of
Oh it's the sweetest sound ~
"I see the same strength that she had in you," he said softly. "I guess that is one reason why I never wanted to trust you, care about you... I just didn't want to lose someone again."
"I'm sorry," Relena whispered.
"Don't be," his voice strong and sure. "I should have never turned away from you. It was a stupid reason. And now..." he trailed off as the tears started to fill Relena's eyes. He gently pulled her in his arms again, caressing her back gently as he felt the wetness soak through his Preventer's jacket. "I will find Heero for you," he whispered into her hair. "I will bring him here. I promise."
~ 'Cause that's the beat of a heart ~
To be continued...
*Angel and Wufei appear from out of nowhere*
So what do you guys think? Any guesses on what is wrong with Relena? I am sorry if anyone thinks that Wufei is OOC, I can't stand the fact that he is put into the mold of a male chauvinist. I think that he could be very sweet in the right situation, and I had to provide it for him!
Wufei: You are just evil, Angel.
*smiles at him* I know!
Wufei: Review the story. It would be an injustice not to.
*rolls eyes* Thank you Justice Boy! Ja ne, minna!
*Angel and Wufei disappear*
