Chapter 2 - The Perfect Soldier Comes Home

By Angel Love

Author's Notes: Wow! I love the reviews. And yes to the girl that asked if she could put this on her website. All I ask is for her to give me the web addy and put my email address on the fic. But I am sorry to say that Relena is not pregnant at this time. And no this isn't going to be a Wufei-Relena fic. Although all of your comments gave me a few ideas to write one. All I have to do is come up with a decent plot that won't fall apart on me. *big grin*

Standard disclaimers apply. I don't own Gundam Wing, alas they thought that I lost my mind when I asked them to give the boys to me. I also don't own 'As Long As You Love Me'. That is owned by the Backstreet Boys and can be found on their self-titled album. I also don't own 'How Do I Live'. That is owned by Trisha Yearwood, Leann Rimes and their respective record companies.

Heero's Apartment on L1:

It didn't take Wufei very long to find Heero, less than a week actually.

Heero was sitting at his computer typing when he heard the door open behind him. "Hello, Wufei," his monotone voice was heard, he didn't even bother to stop typing or turn around.

"Yuy," Wufei greeted him, his mind struggling to figure out a way to get Heero to return to Earth without telling him the truth. Relena had begged him not to tell Heero the reason why she needed him. She wanted to tell him herself, he respected her for it. He knew that it was going to be one of the hardest things that she ever did.

Finally after a few moments of silence, Heero turned around to look at Wufei. "Why are you here?" He crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back in his chair. His cold Prussian eyes stared intently at the Chinese pilot, noting that he would not look him in the eye.

"Heero..." Wufei stumbled uncharacteristically.

Heero's eyebrows quirked, concern rushing through him. He had never seen Wufei look so flustered. "What happened?"

Again, Wufei struggled with a response. He had known that Heero would ask him questions, but he was unable to tell him a lie, for that was against his honor. "You need to come to Earth," Wufei finally answered, his black eyes leveling with Prussian blue.

Heero's mind began to race. He knew that Wufei was hiding something from him. But what? What was on Earth? What could be so important that Wufei would find it necessary to seek him out? Only one thing came to his mind... Relena.

"What happened to Relena?" His hard eyes demanded the answer from his friend.

Wufei shook his head. "I cannot tell you," his voice laced with regret. "I gave her my word."

Heero nodded and rose from his seat. He knew that Wufei was a man of honor. The Perfect Soldier wouldn't get answers from him, so he would go to Earth and find them from Relena "I'll pack a bag."

It had been so long since he had seen her. His heart ached at the thought of anything happening to her. He briefly closed his eyes picturing her beautiful, smiling face and then quickly moved to throw his clothes in a bag.

Relena's estate:

~ As long as you love me ~

Relena was kneeling alone in the gardens, wearing a pair of faded jeans and cropped tank top, her golden hair falling loosely around her. Her rose bushes and soft grass surrounded her. It usually brought her comfort, but today her thoughts kept drifting over and over again on how to tell Heero her deepest secrets, the inner turmoil rising at an almost suffocating level.

~ Although loneliness has always been a friend of mine

I'm leaving my life in your hands ~

Her hand closed tightly around the red rose she was holding, pricking her finger on one its thorns. She ignored the pain and the trickle of blood as she closed her eyes, desperately wishing that she had told Heero her feelings sooner. "If I only had more time," she whispered to the gentle breeze.

She heard the two pilots make their way towards her slowly. She turned her head to look up at them, memorizing every detail of both.

Wufei was not a bad looking man, she noted. He wore his traditional white outfit. His black hair was still worn in its tight ponytail. His black eyes held a note of sadness that had never been there before, or at least he had never let it show. The night he showed up, he had told her of his wife. Relena felt a deep compassion and kinship rise within her as she studied him. She had never realized that he could be so gentle and caring. There were a great many things that she learned in the past couple of days that made her care for him a great deal.

~ People say I'm crazy and that I am blind

Risking it all in a glance ~

Then she turned to look at Heero. 'He is still as gorgeous as ever. And his fashion sense never seems to change,' she thought with a wry smile as she took in his green tank top and faded blue jeans forming nicely over his well-toned muscles. His deep Prussian eyes still held the pain and sorrow she saw three years before through the mask. Even after his two-year absence from her life, he could make her heart turn over with a mere glance.

~ And how you got me blind is still a mystery

I can't get you out of my head ~

But right now he wasn't just glancing at her; he was searching her face trying to find any clue as to what was so wrong that it had shaken Wufei. He had almost forgotten how beautiful Relena was. With her golden hair hanging loosely around her and moving softly to brush against her with the breeze, she reminded him of an angel. Her blue eyes held his as he walked ever closer to her, hiding the truth from him. His concern rose with each step. Relena had never been able to hide anything from him before. Just like he had never been able to hide much from her.

Wufei nodded a greeting at Relena, his eyes holding hers a moment before he melted into the shadows and left the two alone, wishing them both the luck that he was sure they needed.

~ Don't care what is written in your history

As long as you're here with me ~

Relena motioned with her hand for Heero to sit in front of her. Prying her eyes away from him, she looked out at her garden. She mentally had to remind herself to stay calm and breath. She was going to get through this.

Heero sat silently waiting for Relena to speak, the worry growing with every moment that past. Finally he couldn't take it anymore and he reached out to take her hand. He was a little surprised when she clutched it like a lifeline. "Relena..." his voice was low and soft.

~I don't care who you are

Where you're from

What you did

As long as you love me ~

She turned her eyes back to him, letting him fully see the pain and misery that she was going through. Heero's mouth dropped open, and not for the first time he was unsure of what to do.

Relena broke the silence with a whisper; "I love you, Heero."

Heero's jaw began to work like a fish. Relena was always full of surprises, always throwing him off balance. He sometimes wondered if she enjoyed doing that to him. "I..." he began.

~ Who you are

Where you're from

Don't care what you did

As long as you love me ~

But Relena shook her head, begging him with her eyes to stay silent. "I have loved you from the first moment I meet you," she looked away, a single tear trailed down her face. Heero reached over and gently wiped it away, very much like the first time. It caused another tear to fall and take its place.

~ Every little thing that you have said and done

Feels like it's deep within me ~

"You were always so strong," she whispered. "Something that I never was; at least not at first. I needed that, I needed you."

A soft breeze blew her hair so that it fluttered across their intertwined hands and Heero found himself edging closer to her, somehow knowing that something was tearing her up inside. He felt a strong urge to comfort and protect her from this unknown enemy.

~ Doesn't really matter if you're on the run

It seems like we're meant to be ~

"All of you seemed to know what to do," she continued. "I didn't understand why it had to be you that fought, you that killed, you that suffered." Her eyes turned to his. "I didn't understand, but I always believed in you, and always loved you. It never mattered to me that you were a Gundam pilot and I was a pacifist princess. I loved you anyways."

~ I don't care who you are

Who you are

Where you're from

Where you're from

What you did

As long as you love me ~

She fell silent for a few moments, looking down at their intertwined hands. Her voice was barely above a whisper, almost like the wind as she finally spoke again. "I need that strength again, Heero." Her voice got even softer. "Please."

Heero raised her chin so that she would look him in the eyes. His own love for her was breaking through his mask. "Whatever is wrong, Relena," he whispered, "I will make it right."

Relena shook her head, new tears coming to her eyes. "You can't fix this, Heero. I wish you could. But you can't. I'm dying."

Heero gasped, his eyes wide with shock. "What?" his voice a whisper, he began felt his world start to fall out from under him.

"I'm dying," she repeated. She got up and moved away from him, leaving him staring after her. "I have a brain tumor. It's cancer." She wrapped her arms around herself, her shoulders trembling a little. "It's located in a part of the brain that they can't operate on and chemotherapy won't work, it's too advanced. They say that I have about..." her voice shaking. "I have about six months."

Heero wasn't prepared for the pain that shot through him. He had never considered Relena ever dying that was never an option. He was content to love her from afar, knowing that she was alive and well on Earth. But he was a soldier; he should be used to death by now, shouldn't he? Why should Relena's death be any different?

~ I don't care

Who you are

Who you are

Where you're from

Where you're from

Don't care what you did

As long as you love me

Yeah

As long as you love me ~

But as he heard her quiet sobs, he knew why her death meant more to him. Relena was his heart and soul. He dragged himself back to reality, got up and wrapped his arms around her, turning her so that her face was buried into his green shirt. He stroked her hair, trying to offer her what little comfort he could offer.

As she sniffled against him, he whispered in her hair, just loud enough for her to hear. "I need you too."

She smiled against him, her heart swelling at the words. They weren't `I love you', but for Heero it meant the same thing. "Will you stay with me?" she looked up at him.

"Only if you marry me," he offered her a small smile.

Relena's sad face broke out with a big grin and nodded her head. "I would be honored to," she whispered.

Heero grinned then he pulled her chin up, brushing his lips across hers before claiming her mouth with his, starting the first kiss either would ever have.

~ Who you are

Where you're from

Don't care what you did

As long as you love me ~

*****************

Relena resigned from her position of Vice-Foreign Minister soon after Heero's return, in an effort to help ease her strain. What she didn't realized that in doing so, the other pilots would realize that something was wrong. They all knew that Relena loved her work, plus the rumors were flying that two of the five Gundam pilots had taken up residence in her mansion. And it got the attention of the other three Gundam pilots.

The first to arrive was Trowa.

He was told that the mistress of the house spent most of her time in the gardens, so that was where he headed when he reached her mansion. What he saw when he got there surprised him.

Relena was resting against a tree, reading a book. Her blond hair pulled back at the base of her neck. Resting in her lap was Heero. He seemed to be dozing; for once his features seemed to be relaxed. Near them he noticed that Wufei was practicing with his katana.

Trowa slid out of the shadows, not surprised at all when Heero sat straight up and pointed a gun at him and Wufei aimed his katana at him. A small smile graced his features in greeting. Both men visibly relaxed.

"Trowa," Heero acknowledged.

"I wondered when you would show," Wufei added.

Relena's mouth dropped open. "You knew he would show up?"

Wufei smirked at her. "You don't think that your announcement to retire went unnoticed by the others, do you?"

Relena shook her head. "I knew that they would see it, the whole world saw it. I just didn't think they would think anything about it." Relena briefly stuck her tongue out at Wufei causing him to laugh slightly.

Trowa quietly walked closer to them, watching the exchange. His curiosity peaked. Relena and Wufei were never friends before. His instincts told him that something was up. His eyes turned to look at Heero. His curiosity went up even more. Of all the pilots, he didn't expect to find these two here.

"I was curious as to your new companions," Trowa said quietly.

Relena's mouth once again dropped. "I didn't think that anyone knew about that," she said quietly.

Heero smirked. "You can't have the pilots around without someone talking about it."

Relena smiled lovingly at Heero. "I guess you are right." She waved a graceful hand at the grass in front of her, inviting Trowa to sit down.

Trowa sat down with his cat-like grace. His eyebrows rose slightly as he saw Heero and Relena's intertwined hands.

Heero smirked and decided to shock the other pilot more. "We are getting married," his voice was still holding its monotone.

The ex-pilot felt like a fish out of water as he stared at Heero and Relena. Heero just sat there, acting as if he hadn't said a word. Relena was beaming like a schoolgirl, a direct indication that he had not heard Heero wrong. He looked over to Wufei, who just smirked at him. Yep, he was definitely a fish out of water here.

Suddenly Relena leaned on Heero heavily, clutching her head, silent tears falling down her face.

Wufei was at her side instantly. "Relena, how bad is it this time?" His face etched with worry.

~ How do I

Get through the night without you?

If I had to live without you

What kind of life would that be? ~

Relena shook her head, unable to answer him. Her eyes trying to focus on Heero's face, desperate to see something of comfort.

Trowa knelt down next to Wufei. He noticed that both Heero and Wufei wore strained expressions on their faces. He knew something was seriously wrong, but now was not the time to be pushing for answers, Relena needed to be helped first.

~ Oh, I

I need you in my arms, need you to hold

You're my world, my heart, my soul

If you ever leave

Baby you would take away everything good in my life ~

Heero was gently rubbing Relena's back, whispering to her, his voice too low for either of the pilots to hear.

Relena nodded at him, her body covered in sweat at the slight movement. It brought a moan to her lips and she buried her head into the grove in his shoulder.

~ And tell me now

How do I live without you?

I want to know

How do I breathe without you? ~

Heero quickly scooped her up, without a word to either Trowa or Wufei, carried her into the mansion, his heart aching. It was the first time he had actually seen one of her headaches. Wufei told him that he had witnessed one right before he found Heero. He remembered the other pilot was amazed that Relena never uttered a sound, just silent tears. The fact that she moaned now, let Heero know that this time was more painful, much more painful. Again his heart clutched tightly in on itself and he held her more securely against him.

~ If you ever go

How do I ever, ever survive?

How do I, how do I, oh how do I live? ~

He quickly made his way up Relena's stairs, stopping long enough to ask Paygen to bring a bowl of water and a washcloth to Relena's room.

~ Without you

There'd be no sun in my sky

There would be no love in my life

There'd be no world left for me ~

He laid Relena out on her bed and tried to move away but Relena clutched his shirt. "Please..." her voice slurred with pain. "...stay."

~ And I

Baby I don't know what I would do

I'd be lost if I lost you

If you ever leave

Baby you would take away everything real in my life ~

"Of course," Heero said, his voice soft with the love he held for her. He could see Relena struggling to focus on his face, but it only seemed to cause her more pain. "Close your eyes, baby. Relax," he soothed, gratified when she did as he requested.

Paygen came in and handed him the bowl and washcloth, looking at Relena sadly. He didn't think that she would go before him, his heart constricted painfully at the thought of her fate. She was much too young and pure for such a fate.

~ And tell me now

How do I live without you?

I want to know

How do I breathe without you? ~

Heero nodded to Paygen gratefully and turned his attention to Relena. He soaked the washcloth and placed it on Relena's forehead, slightly surprised by the small fever he felt, and Relena's small sigh. Soon he noted that she cooled down and didn't seem to be in as much pain. From her breathing he guessed that she was sleeping. He went to put the bowl in her bathroom, but was stopped by Relena's hand. He looked over at her, to see her eyes focused steadily on his face.

"Thank you," she whispered.

~ If you ever go

How do I ever, ever survive?

How do I, how do I, oh how do I live? ~

Heero only nodded at her, wishing that he could have done more. Again he made to move away, but Relena tugged on his arm. Her eyes were begging him. "I will stay with you," he smiled understanding what she wanted. "But first let me get rid of this."

Relena nodded her head, closing her eyes.

~ Please tell me baby

How do I go on? ~

Heero quickly put the bowl in the bathroom and the washcloth in the sink. He moved back in the room, silent as a cat. But he wasn't surprised that when he reached the bed, Relena scooted over without opening her eyes. He slid next to her, pulling her in his arms, strangely happy when she laid her head on his chest and wrapped her arms around her waist.

~ If you ever leave

Baby you would take away everything

I need you with me

Baby don't you know that you're everything

Real in my life? ~

"I love you," she whispered, then promptly fell asleep, drained from her ordeal, secure in knowing that Heero would still be holding her when she woke up.

~ And tell me now

How do I live without you?

I want to know

How do I breathe without you?

If you ever go

How do I ever, ever survive?

How do I, how do I, oh how do I live? ~

Heero kissed the top of her head, silently saying the words back to her. Praying that he would be able to tell her before their time together was put to an end.

~ How do I live without you? ~

A silent tear coursed down Heero's cheek as he stroked his love's sleeping back. A thousand words were running through his mind. So many things that he wanted to tell her. But as he felt the despair hit him the only words to escape his lips were...

"How do I live without you baby?"

To be continued...
