------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------
When did it started? When had it started? When did it began? All the same questions. I should have known that Hilde will be quite furious to even go THAT far. I groaned as Hilde pushed me roughly to officer Dorothy. Hilde said nothing as agent Dorothy took or dragged me away. My headache was getting worst. Now I can't be trusted.
Why oh why does it always happen to me? Why? I've kept Mariemaia from dangers, and yet... she was still unprotected... killed mercilessly. I closed my eyes as I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself even though I feel like I'm sinking into a deeper darkness. The darkness I'd tried to defeat, the darkness in me... the darkness which was threatening my life and everybody around me.
"You could have stopped talking about being a wizard, dude!" Dorothy said sarcastically as my eyes fluttered open.
I wanted to say something, but nothing came through my throat. Yes... I'm actually a wizard, but who most likely will believe me being one? A useless wizard, huh? Or even an invisible one? I can't blame Dorothy for not believing in supernatural; heck I don't blame ANYONE who doesn't believe in supernatural. Who am I to force them to believe in me... ha... me, a wizard? A guy who can't always pay for his every day meal I snorted inwardly.
"You're staying RIGHT here, mister!" Dorothy threatened and pushed me into the backseat of a police car.
"Hey, how or where did you get those bruises?" she remarked when she noticed my face scrunching. I winced when I landed and stared at her. Was my face THAT horribly beaten? What do I care? Hilde has beaten me. End of story.
She could have cut my skin open with her fists in her spiky gloves if she wanted to too. Heck! She could do ANYTHING with those skills of her. Oh, haven't I mentioned that? Hilde is a black belt and she surely uses her skills whenever she does investigations. The headquarters are keeping an eye on her, they don't fully trust her and Hilde knows it too.
Ever since last summer when she worked alongside with me, going after the supernatural beings. Now there are rumors about me working alongside with the Mafia king of the city, Treize [1]. Yes, he's the Mafia king in THIS city. I did work alongside him last summer but that was just supernatural stuff and being a wizard,
I've no right to claim if he was evil or not or even claim he was doing bad or good. I'm no god and no judge. But I can admit that being the mafia king IS kinda against the laws... he has his good sides though.
"Hey! Are you listening?!" Dorothy snapped, she might have felt annoyed by my constant staring. I stared at her, but avoided looking through her eyes. Because that's the part where I can see through her and she through me. She could have get a heart attack or something since if anyone is gazing through my eyes, they'll get to see the most horrible thing in those poles of mine.
Dorothy snorted and slammed the door closed.
"Agent Schbeiker must have been quite furious, huh big guy. Is it because of your constant chattering about being a wizard and sensing nearby predators like werewolves, vampires, and elves... urgh... whatever creatures there might be? Hm?" Dorothy snorted again while rolling her eyes. I didn't answer her... it's no use anyways. She would definitely snap back as always... besides my jaw still hurts from the previous attacks. Dorothy didn't wait for any answers and stomped away towards the huge mansion from where she'd dragged me out.
I watched as she gathered a few officers to accompany Hilde on their investigation and sighed. The hole in my stomach was getting bigger and I'm back in my own world again. To think. I tried to decipher all those information and memories from the past as I closed my eyes. What actually DID happen anyways? How DID everything turn out to be like this? When DID this case started? A few months ago or so...I can't remember quite well...

- MACINTOSH'S PLACE -
My stomach was growling as I looked at the folded piece of paper that girl, Mariemaia, had handed.
"Tell me..." she said as my eyes were fixed on that paper. What can it be? Her report? Her assignment? Anything? Curiously I unfolded the paper as Mariemaia's eyes were dancing with anxiety. She was quite anxious about this. She'd called me this morning and invited me for dinner in Macintosh's place. I'm quite ashamed that she told me that she would pay for the food.
Well, come on... she's just a teenager and she'd buying dinner for a GUY? A guy like me? What a shame, I know! But can you blame me? I haven't gotten any assignments since last summer. Hilde hasn't even contacted me ever since that headline about me working alongside with Treize, the mafia king. Puh... you can guess how I'd to live. I can't even pay for my own hearty meal for goodness sake! Only just my every day Ramen noodles soup and now I finally get to have something different in all those days.
Mariemaia had offered... but only in return to get some answers from me about something. I don't know. Just something and this something must be in that paper.
My eyes widened when I saw what she wanted to know. THE MAGIC CIRCLES!!! Is it needed for her assignments?
I can admit that it was just drawn, but then again... these magic circles...
One was definitely a wall circle. It consists of a large circle with different kinds of magical forces, also most likely made out of silver stars. Silver stars are quite hard to find nowadays, but it's worth it if one's an experienced magic user. The other two are most like connected to each other. All three are barriers, barriers to protect someone or something. But it has its limits.
One is a barrier, which can protect human beings, while keeping the beings, or should I say those who aren't human, away. The other one is a barrier, which protects the beings, which aren't humans; it's like quite the opposite of the other one. While the third one is... the barrier which neither human nor those who aren't humans. Anything in mind? This is most likely used for demons or angels and all that other stuff.
This last one is quite dangerous for both humans and beings that aren't humans. It's quite impossible for a wizard like me to break that third barrier... but it's quite possible to create one, once the user knows every little thing about how to create a perfect one. This one can either turn evil or good, depending for what purpose you needed it to do. But it isn't used THAT often...
Then it hit me. Mariemaia. How did she know about these circles? The magic schools are definitely not teaching minor students like Mariemaia about how to create magic circles and then again... the dangers, which these magic circles can cause, is another problem. There's no way I'm going to tell her about the circles especially not the third one, the wall circle... the most powerful one of all three circles.
"Tell me, how can you create them?" Mariemaia said while her innocent mint-green eyes are showing a lot of hints of curiosity. I closed my eyes and folded the paper back. But then again I should tell her SOMETHING, besides she's the one who is going to pay for the bill.
"You need exactly about 100 stars to create the two first circles. Some incense for the chanting, your chalk... that's just about enough" [2] I said calmly as I felt my stomach was still making sounds. I smelt the steak was ready... ready to be taken. Our dinner plates were just on the counter; I felt my thoughts were getting hungry also. Mariemaia blinked as she was digesting the little info, I can tell by her thinking pose.
"HEY! NUMBER 34! YOUR FOOD IS READY! JUST TAKE THE PLATES OR IT WILL GET COLD!!" Mr. Macintosh shouted. Number 34? That's definitely our table. I'm feeling more uncomfortable about not having anything in my stomach. Yeah... I'm quite hungry at the moment. Push me back to my senses and you'll know that no matter what happens one must have his own manners. I waited patiently if Mariemaia is going to take the plates.
"Mariemaia?" Mariemaia looked at our number and then looked at me.
"Go get the food..." she smirked and I nodded. I felt like she was getting on to something. Definitely something about the third circle. She can talk all she wants; no way I'm going to tell her about the third one.
I stood up and went to get our dinner.
"What about the third one?" she asked when I put her plate in front of her.
"That's not my place to tell you..." I told her coolly as I sat down, across her.
"And why not?" Mariemaia looked confused at me. I crumpled the paper and looked at her, avoiding her intense-looking eyes.
"Because... you're a minor and you're not strong enough to handle these kind of things. Are you sure this one is for one of your assignments? I don't think so. Where did you get this picture?" I said, trying to keep calm as possible.
Mariemaia was dumbstruck, I can tell... her face was shocked by my reply and she looked at her food.
"Not really... I've found it somewhere in those thick giant old books" came a small voice through her throat. She bit on her lips as she played with her food.
"The professor didn't even want to answer your question when you went to him, wasn't it?" I asked and she looked up. "So you came to me..."
"Yes... you're the only one who knows. You're THE only one who I trust wholeheartedly... So are you going to tell me?" She asked with a hint of longing. Why is this circle so important to her? For what is it needed? Should I tell her? Or should I not? If I told her she would most likely ignore my warnings anyways... but as her guardian it's best that she just stay faaar awaaaay from this side of the magic.
"I've already told you about the two others. The third one is actually a forbidden circle. One can't just make a wall circle without any proper skills and you, young lady, are going to stay far away from these circles. You're not skilled enough to create the proper rituals... it has its own limits and own sacrifices" I said while clasping my hands in front of my mouth, smelling the delicious steak flavors in front of me.
"But I..."
"No... I'm not going to tell you about the third circle. You're not efficient enough. Just forget the whole thing about these circles..." I snapped, trying to keep my voice down and threw the crumpled piece of paper in the wastebasket... but it didn't fall inside it. Mariemaia's eyes were flaring with rage as she used her fork to strike her steak. Seems like fighting the dead cow meat and ate up her food.
I sighed as I watched how angrier she was getting. She was definitely glaring at me. "Look, Mariemaia... I know it's hard to do the proper chants and the proper rituals and trying to create those circles is most likely not a task for a minor... I'm quite efficient and quite aware what to do with the circles, but I'm not going to make one anyways..." I said calmly, hoping that she might cool down.
But I was wrong, she didn't cool down... her eyes were flickering and her face looked like as if she was pouting. At last she's done eating and put down a few bills on the table.
"Well, enjoy your meal!!" she said sarcastically and stomped towards the door.
"Mariemaia... I..." I wanted to say something, but then I was cut off when she whirled around and stuck her index finger in front of me... almost poking my nose.
"YOU'VE NO RIGHT TO TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT DO! I THOUGHT YOU WERE DIFFERENT! I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKELY TELL ME. BUT I WAS WRONG. SO GOOD BYE AND ENJOY YOUR MEAL!!" she shouted and stomped away.
The other people in the room stared at me, curiously... now I'm feeling quite embarrassed. But I did the right thing. I chose the right choice for her well being. She's after all still a minor wizard; she'll definitely do nothing stupid if it means danger ahead. I know I did the right thing to keep it away from her, but why do I feel this gape in my stomach? It's not that I'm hungry... it's just that... maybe I don't like lying to her or anybody.
I looked at my steak and suddenly I felt the urge to not eat it. But then again Mariemaia DID pay for the meal so why waste it?
Someone came in. I didn't look up... I was busy thinking AND eating.
"Did you do something again?" I heard a familiar voice as a different shadow was cast over my shoulder. I looked up. Surprise. It was Hilde Schbeiker, standing right behind me.
