~Part 9~
"Arrival"

"So, you're telling me that Julie didn't kill you when she could have?"
Toshiro was cleaning Lenette's bike, running his hand over the newly polished surface gently. Lenette beamed with pride as she watched Toshiro talk with Wufei. Who cares what they were talking about, Lenette was happy just to be in the presence of two people she admired so much.
"It was so strange....Julie could have easily eliminated me by either choking me or by slicing a vein but she simply didn't take action...in fact, she seemed happier to just fight with me."
Toshiro smiled lightly as he adjusted the headlights of Lentte's vehicle. Poor Wufei, he had no idea....oh well, if his timing was right, Wufei would know soon enough.
"Maybe she doesn't want to kill you." Toshiro suggested easily, as he finished with the headlights. "All done!" he said happily as Lenette hugged him. "Domo Arigato Toshiro-chan! I'm gonna go test it now! Ja na!"
Toshiro laughed as the little girl bounded onto the bike. "Ja na, Lenette-chan."
Toshiro watched blissfully as Lenette sped away, but his smile vanished when he noticed the way Wufei was looking at him.
"Nani ka?" Toshiro asked though not defensivley. Wufei was giving him an appraising sort of stare. "You let that kodomo no onna add 'chan' to your name?"
Toshiro shrugged. "Why not? Lenette is my dearest friend. I adore the chibi onna to death and she loves me back. It's a kind of relationship I coul never have established it I didn't treat her as an equal."
Wufei sighed. "Nande."
Toshiro smiled. "Damarinasai before you criticize her! Lenette is actually a very mature little girl!"
Wufei looked at him again as if he was crazy. "She is?"
Toshiro laughed again as the two proceeded into Relina's mansion. (they had been outside it)
"She's a tremendously loyal young woman for someone who grew up without knowing her mother."
"Young woman?" Wufei thought. Toshiro really did respect this Lenette. Otherwise he wouldn't refer to her that way, as though she was his age instead of the four year age difference. Wufei decided not to voice this opinion however, it didn't seem a wise idea to risk offending Hiro Yui's son.
"She didn't know her mother? Not ever?"
Toshiro shook his head. "Nope. All she had was Mr. Maxwell and the rest of the Libra crew."
Wufei blinked, still surprised. "And who was her mother?"
Toshiro shook his head. "Not was. Is. Her mother's still alive."
"Then why can't she live with her mother? Did Duo get a divorce?"
Toshiro folded his arms behind his head as he and Wufei walked slowly under some blossoming Sakura trees. Pink buds fluttered melodiously downward, their enchanting scent wafting through the air. Wufei couldn't help but enjoy the quiet peace they brought to the scenery.
"No, Duo and Lenette's mother never got married. It was more of a passionate kinda' thing."
Wufei sighed. "At least it wasn't arranged."
Toshiro looked at him, his blue eyes glimmering sympatheticly. "You had to live with one?"
Wufei nodded. "But Meiran, my wife, was killed in a battle."
Toshiro nodded. "Ah...Gomen nasai, I didn't know."
Wufei shook his head as he gazed out over the gorgeous landscape that was Relina's backyard. "Don't be."

"Sir, we're almost at Earth."
A woman's voice entered the dimly lit cockpit of the SakuraJima 7. The pilot awoke from his mediation swiftly and adjusted his hair so that his helmet fit on his head.
"Excellent. Notify me when we arrive at our destination."
"Yes sir."
The pilot shifted his gaze to another screen, this one belonging to a self-suffiecient laptop. His fingers grazed over it lovingly, as he typed in a name.
TARGET: LENETTE MAXWELL
ACKNOWLADGED. PLEASE WAIT.
The pilot smiled. Soon....soon.....
"Just a matter of time before the little princess is mine."

Lenette walked blissfully next to Toshiro, grapsing his hand happily as they enjoyed the sunset city. The many towers and buildings around them glittered softly in the orange light, casting small insignificant shadows on the street. Lenette's loved this, being with Toshiro, getting ice cream, being with Toshiro, having french fries for lunch, getting treated like she was special, being with Toshiro....
All the things she enjoyed.
"Toshiro-kun?"
"Hai, chibihime?"
"Why do you always treat me like I'm special?" Lenette asked, blue eyes glistening with joy and curiosity. Toshiro smiled down at Lenette as she hopped up onto his shoulders.
"Because you are special, Lenette-chan."
Lenette sighed gently. Not the answer she was hoping for.
"Toshiro-kun?"
"Hai, Lenette-chan?"
"Will I ever find a Prince someday?"
Toshiro didn't seem phased by this question. Half the time it seemed as though Lenette lived in a fantasy world.
"A Prince?" Toshiro asked, his voice calm and gentle. Lenette nodded against his shoulder.
"Shinju says that every girl has a Prince that's all her own. She says that he may not *look* like a Prince, or even really be a Prince, but she says that all girls have one. I just wondered if I'd have one....since I'm not really an ordinary girl, ya' know?"
Toshiro hoisted Lenette up off his shoulders and spun her around in his arms several times playfully.
"Of course you have a Prince, my sister says that all girls do."
"Yeah, but Shinju is kinda....well....."
"Shinju?"
"Hai."
Toshiro sighed thoughtfully as Lenetterubbed her face against his shoulder. Lenette was entrusted to his care, he was supposed to look after her....but it was the 4 year age difference that Toshiro couldn't handel. Lenette shouldn't be in his care if he thought about her like this....but...but....
She was more like a slightly younger adult than a little girl. Sure, she was innocent enough, and sure, she was so much like a little kid sometimes...but...still...
Toshiro remembered the numerous times he'd seen Lenette make a powerful or strong desicion, and she'd never yet made the wrong choice. A little girl who had chosen to follow in her father's footsteps, taken on the responsibility of being a Gundam pilots, and becoming a self-taught warrior at such an early age....
Lenette was not a little girl....in body, perhaps, but no, she was mature...
In spirit.
Lenette couldn't help but be energetic and playfull, she was a Maxwell....she'd inherited her father's love of making everybody smile. Being the author of a smile was one of the things Duo Maxwell was famous for, and Lenette was no exception. Lenette was there for them when they needed comedy relife, or even just an excuse to laugh.
Toshiro sighed again, as he placed the little girl carefully on the ground.
"Lenette?" Toshiro asked, gently, as he bent down to one knee so that he was at Lenette's eyes level. Lenette blinked but looked at him with complete sincerity.
"Hai, Toshiro?"
"If the day comes, when you have not found a Prince, and you have not found someone to love you and care for you....."
Toshiro paused, his eyes looked saddened somehow, and Lenette foudn herself hanging onto his words for fear that the might somehow vanish. God, he was precious to her.
"Lenette, if you ever need me to, I will be that Prince for you. I will give you that gift, Lenette, as long as you always give me your smile. Is that agreed?"
Lenette nodded, slowly. Toshiro had stopped, laying his hands on her shoulders.
"You promise?" the girl asked, feeling her heartbeat accelerate. Toshiro nodded.
"I promise."
Lenette closed her eyes now, placing her hand on Toshiro's. Toshiro waited for a response.
"Toshiro-chan....wasurenai...."
Toshiro smiled. "Good." It was not his normal, open and goodnatured smile, but rather one that comes after one was survived a very long struggle.

Hiro lifted the phone to his ear slowly, feeling very bored. This had better be worth it. It was almost midnight for Kami's sake!
"Moshi moshi?" Hiro spoke in his usual monotone.
"Hiro?"
Relina's breathing on the other line sounded horse.
"Hai?"
"Hiro, you'd better get to the hospital straight away..."
"Why?" Hiro asked, as he reached for his jacket.
"Because Lenette's here, she's crying....Toshiro was in a fight....he may be dying....."
Hiro hung up and bounded out the door.
