Chapter 7
The car was silent as Duo drove up the winding dirt road. Heero winced every time they ran over a root, knowing that the boy Duo was keeping in the trunk was likely getting bruises from the ride. When they got to
the top of the hill, Duo pulled the car around to the side of the cabin and put it in park.
"We're here!" Duo climbed out of the car and headed towards the trunk to retrieve Quatre. Heero followed,
letting his door slam as he watched Duo open the trunk. His eyes were glued to the pocket the teen shoved the car keys in. "Don't worry Heero," Duo said, making the boy jump and look up. "I know what you want, and we can get to that later. For now, I gotta get Sleeping Beauty here out of my trunk and in that cabin."
"I'll get him," Heero said quickly. "You've had to deal with him the entire trip. Just leave the door open and make sure there aren't any critters that made themselves at home." /I hope there's a bear in there./
Duo had given him a funny look at first, then grinned and clapped Heero on the back. "That's the spirit Heero! Just watch out, he's a kicker." Duo winked at him and sauntered off to the cabin.
Heero reached into the open trunk to lift the boyinside it gingerly. He'd only raised him a few inches before pale aqua eyes opened and glared at him. Heero almost dropped him.
Quatre didn't know who the teen was trying to get him out of the trunk, but from what he'd pieced together from their conversation the other boy was an enemy. He glared the best he could at the stranger, determined not to show any fear.
Heero straightened with Quatre cradled in his arms. The other boy *did* look like he was getting ready to try kicking him in the head. Lowering his mouth to the blonde's ear he whispered, "I'll get us out of here, but for now I have to play along. Please believe me." The glare turned into mild shock, and the boy gave Heero a quick nod of understanding.
Duo had already gone inside and was looking over the small cabin. There was no sign of anything but dust
bunnies. The cabin only had one room, with a loft taking up half the ceiling. The only furniture was a small table in the corner with two stools, a cabinet for dishes, woodstove and a stand-alone sink. The loft just had a straw-filled mattress, quilt and a single pillow. There was a wooden ladder in the corner to reach the loft.
Duo frowned and walked to the back window. Wiping away some of the grime that had built up, he peered outside and found what he was looking for. A few feet away from the cabin stood an outhouse. /Good thing I got some toilet paper when we stopped at that dinky store./ Duo thought with a grin. He turned from the window in time to see Heero carrying Quatre through the open door.
"Hope it doesn't get too cold at night, the bathroom is outside," Duo said pointing with his thumb over his shoulder. He grinned when he saw the blonde shudder at his words. /Aw, is the poor little rich boy gonna have
nightmares about bathrooms? I'd much rather he had nightmares about me.../
Heero looked around the cabin and started walking towards the ladder to the loft. He froze when he felt Duo's hand on his shoulder.
"Where are you going?" Duo asked amiably.
"I-I'm going to lay him down up there," Heero replied, turning to Duo with a confused look on his face.
"The loft is for people to sleep in, Heero. He's just a victim. Just set him down here on the floor. I'll be right back." Duo left the cabin before Heero could argue.
Blinking at the empty doorway, Heero looked at Quatre and sighed. "Don't worry, you're a person to me." He
sat the boy down on the floor, frowning when the blonde whimpered slightly. Duo came back into the cabin just then, twirling a long length of rope. Kneeling by Quatre, Duo grabbed his wrists and began untying him.
"Here, Heero." Duo handed Heero the smaller rope that had been around Quatre's wrists. "Tie his legs so he
won't be able to kick at us." Heero watched, transfixed as Duo brought one of Quatre's wrists up to his face. He was holding the boy tightly to prevent being bopped in the head. His tongue came out and licked slowly at the rope burn on the blonde's inner right wrist. "Mmm.."
Heero thought about dropping the rope he held around Duo's neck and strangling him. It would be easy if he
caught Duo by surprise, then escaped with Quatre. /I-I can't do it! I can't kill him, can't be responsible for another death! I'm sorry.../ Heero dropped to his knees by Quatre's feet and started winding the rope around one ankle, then the other. He gave the boy enough slack to be able to shuffle if he were allowed to go anywhere. Heero kept his eyes lowered the whole time, avoiding the pitiful look he knew was being thrown at him. While Heero bound Quatre's feet, Duo was tying his wrists together an a figure-eight knot.
"Are we just going to leave him here like this?" Heero asked, trying to sound indifferent.
Duo just smirked and added an extra loop in the middle of the figure-eight. Standing with the excess rope in
his hand, he pointed at one of the stools by the small table. "Bring one of those stools over here."
Heero did so and watched as Duo used it to reach the beams supporting the loft above their heads. Duo held
on to the closest one for balance and started looping the rope through one of the decorative square gaps.
Heero quickly picked up Quatre by his underarms when he saw that Duo was planning on making the boy stand.
Quatre whimpered as the rope sliced even more into his wrists. Duo didn't stop until Quatre's feet were barely touching the ground.
Jumping down from the stool, Duo grinned at Heero and gestured to the car. "After you buddy, we've still got
some stuff in the car."
