KID'S FRIEND

* * *

AC 185.

Kid straightened his collar so it was high enough to hide his face from the cold, and shoved two hands into his pockets. He clutched his fingers around the money that was in his right pocket and looked up at the street. The stores should be around here somewhere...

Odin and he had only arrived to L2 V08744 a few days ago. It was the first time he was sent to do the shopping in this new home, and so he wasn't sure where were the stores. He continued walking past a small park and smiled a little as he saw the stores were not so far away from the park. He was sorry he didn't take Yoshi with him, cause now he had no one to play with in the park. He will have to go home straight after the shopping.

That thought made kid pout sadly. He wasn't in a rush to get back home. Odin would probably be in one of his moods again. Ever since Linda died, Odin was always sad and depressed. Kid just didn't have that much fun with him anymore. But at least he had stopped drinking. After he had confronted him, running away from home that is, Odin had been doing better. But still, things were not the same.

The laughter of children made the five-year-old look up. He sent another gaze at the park, where the laughter was coming from. He saw a bunch of children, some his age, some older, playing around. He trained his ears real hard so he could hear what they were saying.

"Your turn today!"

"Yeah, kid, good luck!"

"Bring me back something sweet!"

"I will if you stop pushing me like this!"

Kid smiled at the little fight, wishing he could play with them too. He sighed and kept on walking towards the store.

* * *

After picking up all that he was asked to buy, Kid dragged the heavy basket over to the cashier counter. As he stood in the line, he could hear those children laugh again and no sooner than he heard them, they came in running to the store, fast as the wind.

"Hey kids! You watch what you're doing there!" The salesperson yelled at them, shaking his head as he checked the products of the lady that stood in front of Kid.

Kid kept on looking curiously at the children that ran around the store, chasing each other as they picked up various food products. He reluctantly turned away as the happy bunch disappeared in the back of the store and it was his turn to pay.

He handed the products one by one to the man behind the counter, surprised that he didn't comment about his young age as so many other cashiers did in so many other colonies.

"Damn kids..." The man muttered, check pricing one of the items, his eyes never leaving the direction the children had disappeared to.

Kid frowned; thinking the man just didn't like children and not liking him for it.

"HEY! PUT THAT DOWN!!!"

He whirled his head around as he heard the man yell at the children and saw that one of them was holding a large box full of bread.

The kid with the box just stuck his tongue at the man and the other children giggled.

"You put those things down now!" The man threatened.

"Shut up gramps!" One of the kids yelled as the others grabbed as many products as they could and ran out of the store.

"Damn kids!" The man yelled again, throwing the box he was holding to the ground as he rounded the counter in order to chase after the kids. Being in such a hurry, the man only tangled with his own two feet and fell, face down.

The mocking laughter of children rang to the store and kid looked up, stunned, at the little thieves.

"C'mon! Grab something and lets get outta here!" One of the boys, apparently the eldest, yelled at a few of the little ones. "C'mon!" And he ran out of the store, the little rascals in tow.

Kid was frozen in his spot, just gapping at the sight. In his hands was a little box of chocolates; he had completely forgot he was holding. He heard a few things fall from behind and turned around to see what was going on.

"Oof!" He heard a little frustrated voice, coming from behind the chocolate shelves. "Come down here already!"

Slowly, carefully, Kid walked to where the little command had came from and froze, eyes wide and curious. In front of him stood a little girl, trying hard to reach the chocolates in the high shelves. He too had had troubles reaching that shelf, and the little longhaired girl seemed to be around his age, so she also couldn't reach it either.

"Hey!!" The voice of the salesperson came from behind and Kid gasped as he saw the child turn, face pale, to look up at the man. His eyes widened as he realized the kid was not a girl. It was a boy.

The boy looked up in fright at the storekeeper, then down at the little blue-eyed boy who was gaping at him. He frowned and then opened in a run out of the store, grabbing the box of chocolates out of the other boy's hands.

"Later papas!" He called as he disappeared out of the store.

Kid just kept standing there, frozen in shock, his hand stil up as if he was holding the box, as the store manager went running after the little longhaired rascal.

* * *

About a week later, and Kid was yet again walking towards the store, hands in his pockets, eyes on the floor. He looked up as he walked by the park and his eyes spotted a few kids playing around. He pouted, as he didn't recognize them as the same kids from last week.

For seven days all Kid could think of was those kids. He had told Odin about what happened at the store, and asked him why did the kids steal from the poor man in the store. Odin had explained that this L2 colony was a very poor colony and many street children needed to steal in order to survive. Kid felt sorry for those kids, and especially for the little longhaired boy that was just about his age. He was sorry the boy needed to steal chocolate because he didn't have any. He had promised himself that if he will see him again, he would give him chocolate.

That's why Kid was sad as he passed by the park and didn't hear those same laughing children playing around.

After he was done shopping, Kid decided to walk home through the park, just in case. He passed by a small playground, but only a few kids and their mommies were there. He pouted and continued walking, holding the paper bags tightly.

He walked with his eyes in the ground, not looking up at the happy families that walked around the park. As he passed by a little hotdog counter he could swear he saw a bush move. He frowned, and stopped his walking. He looked carefully at the bush, and indeed, the thing moved again. Kid moved carefully into the small grove, making his way around and from behind the bush, curious as to see what made it move so strangely when there was no wind.

Kid came to a halt, a little smile on his face. Hiding behind the bush was a little boy with long chestnut brown hair. He was bent in front of the bush; his bottom waving high in the air as he reached two hands to clear some leafs and branches in order to see beyond the bush. Kid's smile broadened as he noticed the little boy was not aware that he was caught spying on the hotdogs.

"Hi." He let out and immediately the boy jumped and whirled around, startled. Kid smiled at him, and the stunned little boy just stared at him, face pale. Kid kept standing there, the bags in his hands, not sure of what to do next.

Seeing how silent the blue-eyed boy was, the longhaired kid sighed, irradiated. "What do you think you're doing?!" He questioned harshly. "You don't just walk up on people like that!"

"But that's what you're doing." Kid commented, a bit shocked that the one who was rebuking him was his age.

The boy planted two hands on his hips, looking angrily at Kid. "Well, not everybody gets to walk around with tons of food in their hands!"

Kid swallowed, letting his gaze down in shame.

"Besides," The boy continued. "I was just looking."

Kid looked up at him, face stern. "No you weren't. You were going to steal it."

"Yeah, well, what do you care?!"

"It's not nice to steal."

"Humph! Go back to your mommy, little squirt!" And he turned to walk away.

"I don't have a mommy." Kid let out, eyes looking at the boy pleadingly, not wanting him to leave just yet. It was the first time he had spoken to anyone his age.

Kid's little remark made the boy cease his walking, and he turned around slowly, looking at Kid, in a somewhat sympathetic look in his eyes.

Kid smiled shyly at the other boy, wondering how come he had violet eyes. He thought they were a nice color.

Not wanting the boy to leave just yet, Kid drew out something from one of the bags and handed it to the boy. "Here." He said, hoping the boy will not turn down his offer. "You can have this instead of stealing."

The boy pouted angrily. "I don't need charity!"

"It's not charity. It's a gift." Kid answered, taking a step closer to the boy. He smiled a little as he saw the big violet-blue eyes widen in recondition.

The boy looked up at him, surprised. "You're giving me your chocolate?"

Kid nodded, reaching his hand as far as he could, signaling the boy to take it. "I bought it for you."

"For me?!" The shimmering amethyst eyes looked up at him in disbelief.

"Yeah, because I wanted to see you again." Kid admitted shyly, looking away in embarrassment.

"Hey man! You're the kid from the store, right?!"

Kid nodded his head, looking up at the other boy, happy that he remembered him.

The longhaired boy placed a hand behind his head, laughing uncomfortably. "Hey man! I'm sorry about the chocolate thing! I just had to grab something before I ran! Otherwise, it would be that I came there for nothing, right?"

Kid smiled a little, not really understanding what the boy meant. He gasped, startled, as the longhaired boy grabbed his hand and pulled him along as he began to run towards the playground.

"C'mon, I know this great spot we can play in!"

Kid ran after the boy, smiling. He never played with anyone before, and just looking at this boy's grinning face, he knew he was going to have fun.

* * *

"Wasn't that fun?" The violet-eyed boy asked as he rolled over to lie on his stomach, legs swinging up and down in the air.

Kid nodded and took a deep relaxing breath, stretching his arms high above his head as he too lay on his back, resting by his friend on the soft grass, under a large oak tree.

"You're a good tree climber." The boy remarked. "Almost as good as me."

Kid chuckled at that 'humble' remark.

"Are you sure that this was your first time?"

Kid nodded, eyes looking up at the green branches as the wind played and teased them.

The other boy rolled to lie on his side, facing the dark haired boy. "You don't talk much, do you?" He asked, smiling.

Kid smiled shyly, looking away.

"Solo says I NEVER stop talking." The kid continued. "Do you think so?"

Kid shrugged, still not facing the other boy.

The said boy pouted, racking his brain for a new topic of conversation. "Hey, you didn't even tell me your name!" He smiled as the blue-eyed boy turn to look at him, looking quite troubled. "Why are you so shocked? Do you have such a weird name that you don't want to say it?" He chuckled as the boy scowled at him. "Oh I know! You're name is Eggbert! That's why you don't like it!"

Kid glared at him, not amused at all.

"Or is it Wilbur? That's even worse than Eggbert!" The loud-mouthed boy continued.

"It's Kid."

"Huh?!" The silent answer the boy had provided barely reached his ears, for he was laughing so hard from his own jokes, but when the two words finally registered, the longhaired boy was rendered speechless.

Kid looked at the boy quietly, wondering why he was so shocked.

"You're name is 'Kid'?" He asked, just to make sure he heard right.

Kid nodded. "What's yours?"

The boy frowned, unwilling to volunteer the information.

"It's not Eggbert, now is it?" Kid teased.

Those purplish eyes were laughing again. "Hell no! If I ever did choose myself a name, it will NOT be as dorky as 'Eggbert'!"

Choose a name? "You don't have a name?"

The boy looked away, now feeling uncomfortable under those intense blue eyes. He took a deep breath, and then turned back to face the smaller boy. He smiled kindly at him. "We have a lot in common, you and I." He reached out a hand to shake with Kid. "People call me Kid too."

The dark haired boy smiled back at him, reaching up his hand to shake with the boy. He was happy that he had met someone with so much in common with him. He too liked chocolate, he didn't have a mommy AND his name was Kid. He couldn't be happier. He had made his first friend!

* * *

After playing in the park for another hour or so, the two children went back to their spot by the tree, where the paper bags were hidden. They helped themselves to some drinks and food.

"You know, I was thinking." The violet-eyed boy stated as he took a sip out of a bottle of cranberry juice. "If we both have the same name, we can't call each other, because it will be too confusing. Not to mention other people would freak if they had to call you and I'll come and then they'll call me and you'll come..."

Kid smiled at the boy's rambling, taking another bite from his apple. He looked down thoughtfully at the red fruit, and then turned to the other boy. "So lets make up names."

"Make up names?!"

"Or we can add numbers to our names."

"Numbers?!" the longhaired boy scratched his head thoughtfully, looking up at the sky in thought. "Oh..." He finally let out. "Like I can be Kid One and you'll be Kid Two."

"How come I get to be number two?"

Kid One shrugged. "Don't worry. Second comes straight after first. Besides, I'm bigger than you, so I get to be One."

Kid pouted, folding his arms across his chest. "That's no fair! I want to be number one!"

Kid One just grinned, reaching for the bag to take another apple out of it. "Tell ya what, next time we meet, you'll be one, and I'll be two."

Kid pondered this for a while, then nodded. "Okay. But remember, you have to."

"Sure! I don't break my promises. I never EVER lied to ANYONE."

Kid nodded, satisfied with that answer. "Okay then. I'll be Two."

* * *

They played for a while longer, until they got tired. Kid One began to make jokes when his tummy began 'rambling' and so Kid offered they go and have some more food, though he wasn't really hungry. He supposed that it had been a while since his friend had had some food, but was too afraid to ask, fearing he might insult the other boy. So he kept silent as the other boy helped himself to more of the groceries, just watching him mutely.

The violet-eyed boy noticed he was being watched, and stopped in mid-motion, while reaching for the bag, looking up at Kid. Their gazes locked and for a long while neither boy moved. Finally, Kid One let his hand drop down to his side, and turned away from the brown bag, his little dirty face blushing as he looked away in humiliation.

"What's wrong?" Kid asked, concerned.

Kid One only sighed, shrugging. He still refused to meet Kid's eyes.

"You can have more if you want." Kid let out quietly, walking over to sit by the boy. "I don't mind. I know how it is to be hungry."

Violet-eyes turned to look up at him, shock writing all over them. "You do?"

Kid nodded, settling closer to him, pulling his knees up and hugging them.

"But I thought you had a home..." The other boy mumbled, looking confused.

Kid sighed, his eyes staring into thin air. "But he didn't always buy food..." He muffled out sadly, drawing his knees closer. "It's because he was sad."

"Who was sad?" The longhaired boy asked softly, putting a small palm on Kid shoulder.

"Odin. He was sad because Linda died."

"Oh." The boy let out, looking away thoughtfully. Again the silence fell between them, until Kid One took a deep breath and sighed. "Ya know, sometimes Solo is sad too, because things are so hard. We didn't eat in four days. That always makes him sad."

"Does he yell a lot, because he's sad?"

"Yell?!" Kid One called in shock. He hurried to shake his head. "He NEVER yells."

"But you said that he gets sad." Kid turned to face him, his big blue eyes glistering with tears. "When Odin was sad, he always yelled. He even... he even... he even killed Yoshi!"

The other boy gasped. "He killed someone?!!"

Kid nodded, hugging his knees tightly. "He killed Yoshi... my Yoshi... Linda gave him to me..."

"Ohh..." The amethyst-eyed boy called in understanding.

"He got so mad sometimes, and when he killed Yoshi, I... I... I ran away."

"You left your home?!" Kid One seemed more than a little shocked about Kid Two's confession.

Kid nodded, reaching up a hand to wipe his tears.

"I would never run if I had a home." Kid One let out quietly, looking up at the horizon. "I don't care if people do get mad at me, you never leave your family."

"He's not family." Kid let out miserably. "My mama is dead."

Kid One chuckled briefly then shrugged. "It doesn't matter if you're REAL family. The people you love and care for, they're your family. Like me and Solo. We're best friends, and he's my only family."

Kid turned to study the other boy's grinning face. He smiled weakly. "I think I knew that, maybe... because... because I came back."

Kid One smiled at the smaller boy. "See, toldchya, ya can never leave yer family. Same with friends. Friends are forever."

"Like you and Solo?"

Kid one nodded. "Hm hmm. Like you and me."

"Really?" Kid looked up at him hopefully. "Do you REALLY mean it?"

"Sure!" The boy chipped. "Like I said, I never EVER lie!"

Kid sent him a wide grin of his own, his eyes thanking him for his promise.

"C'mon, enough chatter!" Kid One called as he jumped up to his feet, grabbing Kid's hand. "There's this cool place I didn't show you yet!"

* * *

"Ha! Ha! Ha! Say another one! Say another one!" Kid One called as he rolled on the ground in a fit of laughter, hugging his abdomen as his feet kicked the ground. "C'mon Kid! Another one!"

"What other words do you want to know?"

"Teach me all the swear words!"

Kid frowned. He wasn't allowed to swear. And besides, he didn't know that many. "I don't know..." He mumbled, looking away, fingers playing with the long untrimmed grass.

"Oh c'mon! Don't be a scardy cat! Just a few words." He sat up, facing the boy, placing his index finger on his lips, deep in thought. "How do I say... damn?"

"Chikusho."

"And that other funny word?"

"Baka?"

Kid One laughed again, nearly out of breath. "Yup! That one! What does it mean again?!"

Kid sighed. It was the tenth time he was answering that question. He was beginning to suspect that the other boy was asking him this just so he would swear. Or maybe he just liked hearing it. "It means idiot."

"Baka, right?" Kid One asked, to confirm.

Kid nodded. "Aa. Baka."

The other boy chuckled. "It doesn't sound that bad when you say it. Isn't it funny how you can say one word like a billion times and then it starts sounding funny to you?"

Kid smiled a little. "I guess so."

"Try it, you'll see. Everything sounds funny after you say it a lot!"

Kid frowned, thinking what's the point?! "Do you really want to be called an idiot all the time?"

Kid One shrugged. "It doesn't really matter what people call you, what matters is what they mean when they say it, no?"

"I guess so..."

The other boy brushed a few long strings of hair out of his face, and dropped down to lie on his back. "And what does 'nani' mean again?"

"What."

"That's what I asked."

Kid sighed, annoyed. "It's what."

"Yeah, that's what I asked, what is 'nani'?" He smiled deviously as he saw the kid was getting annoyed.

"'Nani' means what!"

"But that's what I was asking!"

"Stop that!"

"Stop what?"

"The nani thing!"

"Nani?! What 'nani' thing?"

"ARGH!!!!"

Kid One burst into laughter yet again, rolling over to his side, hugging his stomach and was soon out of breath. "You're too much Kid Two!"

"Oh... fuck you!"

"Oh! Look! I taught you something too!"

Kid laughed, covering his mouth as he tried to hide his laughter. This boy was too much fun!

* * *

Neither kid noticed as the hours went by and it was getting dark. Mothers rushed their children back home and only the two little boys were left in the park, playing Tag around a large oak tree. Their laughter echoed throughout the small park as they tackled each other to the ground, rolling on the cool grass.

"Hey- Kid!"

The two boys ceased their game, and looked up. Kid was currently pinned down to the ground by the bigger boy, whose long hair was falling down all around him.

"Kid!!!" The voice called again, muffled for it came from the other end of the park.

Kid pushed the other boy off of him, sitting up.

Kid One did the same.

"Kid, you here?" Another voice, a bit deeper than the first, called out.

The two boys rose up to their feet, looking around.

Kid One chuckled. "I told you they'd get confused." He said, his eyes spotting a familiar figure that was approaching the tree.

Kid nodded, looking in the other direction from which another figure, taller than the first one, was approaching the tree. He turned back to his friend. "Odin's probably worried because I didn't come home."

The other boy nodded. "Yeah, Solo was probably wondering where I was too."

"I had fun today." Kid let out, looking sadly at his friend, as he had to say goodbye.

"Me too. Don't forget, next time your One and I'm Two."

Kid nodded, happy that the boy implied that they would meet again.

"KID!!!" The two voices called at once, the two figures searching in the dark.

Both boys chuckled.

"We better go now." The violet-eyed boy said sadly, sending glances into Solo's way.

"Yeah, okay. Bye."

"Bye." Kid One answered, waving his goodbye to the little Japanese boy who ran off into the dark. He sighed, dropping his gaze down to the ground. He sure hoped he'll see the boy again, they really had fun together.

His eyes widened as he saw the two paper bags lying on the ground, by the tree. "HEY!" He called after the kid, but he and his guardian were long gone. He smiled a little, looking down at the bags. He knew Kid Two didn't forget them, he was too mindful of the bags to do so. He left them on purpose.

"Kid! There ya are! I've been worried sick!"

"Hey Solo!" He whirled around, his amethyst eyes shining with joy. "I had so much fun today!" He said as he jumped up to hug his best friend. "And look! I brought food for all the other kids!!"

"That's very good, Kid, but what did I tell ya 'bout running out like this?" The older boy remarked harshly.

The child pouted, then chuckled. "Oh shut up you baka! I had fun!"

Solo smiled down at the little boy, putting him back down on his feet. "I can see that." He said as he bent down to pick up the paper bags.

"I sure hope I'll see Kid again!" The child chipped as Solo took his hand and they walked out of the park.

"Maybe one day, Kid."
