Jumping at Shadows

"Sir, you know you're supposed to RESTING!" Harri admonished as he put a tray of sandwiches and a drink on a table and looked at Duo disapprovingly. Duo was sitting on the ground with a piece of machinery in front of him, grease staining the grass and grease marking his arms up to the elbows. His bangs were in his eyes and he blew them out of his way with intermittent puffs of air as he tried to loosen a bolt with a wrench.

"I need my power tools," Duo grumbled. "Heero put these damned bolts on. What that man puts on, doesn't come off by human strength."

Harri kept a healthy distance, frowning now and insisting, "Sir, Mr. Yuy gave me strict orders, none of them included standing by and allowing you to strip down a part from your... your... whatever this is from. In fact," he waved a cell phone at Duo, "I'm to call him if I find you doing such things."

"Snitch," Duo growled. "I'm going crazy sitting around , Harri. Makes me think too much."

Soda sniffed at the greasy metal and then rolled eyes at Duo.

"Not you too?!" Duo snorted. "Look, guys, I've accomplished missions in a lot worse condition. I think I can sit and tinker, if I want to."

Harri raised eyebrows. "Sir, you CARRIED this, whatever it is, out here from your garage. I'm certain that violates at LEAST four of Mr. Yuy's orders."

Duo leaned to grab a sandwich from the tray and began eating it. He seemed to be concentrating on the machine, but Harri knew that part of Duo's attention was on him as well. "Mr. Yuy is breaking a lot of doctor's orders by going back to work, himself. " Duo knew that wasn't fair. Heero hadn't taken nearly as much damage as he had and it was important for at least one of them to be at Preventer's headquarters to make certain that Duo's fate wasn't decided before a proper hearing could be held.

"Sir?" Harri persisted.

Duo tossed his wrench aside and glared. He stood up, stretching out the kinks in his back, and immediately felt a dozen deep pains that told him that carrying heavy machinery had been a very bad idea. He kept the wince off his face as he snarled, "All right! I'll be a good boy and go back inside!"

Duo took three steps towards the back door, Soda following, when he stopped and said contritely, "Sorry, Harri." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I guess all of this just gets to me."

"I can imagine," Harri replied, handsome face sympathetic. "I've seen you in action, sir. I saw you being a professional even though..."

Duo looked back at him with a snort, "Even though I was acting less than stable?" When Harri nodded, Duo sighed, "That's the question Grange's report is making them ask themselves. 'Can Duo Maxwell be nuts and still be a Preventer?' I'd find it hard answering that one myself." When Harri looked ready to protest, Duo held up a hand to forestall him, "I think I proved myself more than a few times already, and, I think I proved myself this time too. I just have to... help them to see that."

Harri picked up the tray of sandwiches. "You ARE upset by all of this, aren't you sir?"

Duo looked puzzled. "Huh?"

Harri nodded to the still full tray. "You didn't try to inhale these."

Duo laughed, but then sobered. "I guess I am upset, because I know I'm going to have a lot more of these inquests, since I'm going to be doing hard missions now. I have to expect that I'll be watched closely."

"Well," Harri said as he followed Duo into the house, "You know what those court room vid shows say..."

Duo looked confused. "What?"

Harri intoned seriously, "Be prepared, practice your statements, and keep all your receipts."

Duo snorted. "Why do I think I'm going to be laughing about that in the middle of my inquest hearing?"

Harri was suddenly worried that he had overstepped his bounds. "Sorry, sir, just trying to cheer you up."

Duo smiled and turned to take a sandwich from the tray in Harri's hands, unconcerned with the grease on his fingers. "You did," he told Harri gratefully. "Thanks."

Harri smiled back even as he said sternly, "You can thank me, sir, by not getting your greasy fingers on my clean kitchen."

Duo looked down at his fingers. Harri was trying to warn him to clean them well enough that Heero didn't figure out what he'd been doing. He grunted and went to the bathroom to wash. He yawned then, surprised at how tired he was. He watched Harri prepare dinner and put it away to be reheated later, making small talk as he sat at the kitchen table. After finally seeing the man out of the house, Duo locked the doors and made his way to the bedroom.

Stretching out on the bed and yawning, he let Soda hop up and join him. As the dog stretched out beside him and sunshine and a light breeze drifted through an open window, Duo couldn't help remembering his long, boring days after he had come home from the institute; the long days when he had felt useless and moth balled. It felt good to rest, but he didn't want to return to those days. With Heero and the Preventers, using his hard won skills for peace, he felt whole and happy.

"Don't get used to this," Duo warned the dog. "I'm going back to work." The dog swiveled large, brown eyes at him and Duo sighed. "Yeah, I know, IF they clear me for duty."

"They will," Heero said from the doorway. He tossed his uniform jacket aside onto a chair as Duo recovered from his surprise.

Duo looked sternly at Soda as Soda leapt from the bed and went to sniff Heero in greeting. Duo scowled. "Some agent you are," he scolded the dog. "You didn't even hear him come home."

"He knows it's me," Heero replied as he began unloading his gun, "and he knows where he should be."

Heero placed his gun on the dresser and emptied his pockets into a small, wicker container. Change clinked together with car keys. He turned then and approached the bed. "You didn't rest, did you?" Heero accused with a frown.

Duo sat up and frowned back. "How could you tell?"

Heero sat on the edge of the bed. He slowly reached out and wiped at a grease spot on Duo's face, just under his bangs. He showed the smudge on his finger to Duo. Duo scowled and crossed arms over his chest.

"I was bored!" Duo retorted defensively.

"I know," Heero replied and his face went shadowed. "I was bored too, staying at home after I was injured. I wondered... I wondered how you did it so long the first time, when you came home from the institute."

"So, then you know why I'll do anything to get back to work," Duo told him and lay back on his pillows, "I'll even talk to a bunch of people who want to grill me about whether I'm too nuts to do my job or not."

"Can I lay down?" Heero wondered. When Duo made room for him, he carefully stretched out and faced Duo. "You know it's necessary, Duo."

Duo watched Heero kick off his shoes. Soda investigated them, snuffling loudly. "If you're asking whether I want to strangle Grange or not, I kind of want to. I did do my job after all. I didn't run away and leave everyone to die."

Heero didn't reply and Duo sighed, knowing that he was being overly simple and childish.

"Okay, so, yeah, he should have done it," Duo grunted and turned away, giving Heero his shoulder. "He saw something potentially dangerous in an agent and did his duty and reported it. I have to do my duty now and convince a pack of old , soured, agents that he's wrong."

"You're worried," Heero replied, stating a fact.

Duo snorted, "Of course I am. I don't know how I'm going to convince them in a room far away from any action."

"You convince them with your record," Heero soothed. He took hold of the end of Duo's braid and stroked it. "You convince them by speaking clearly and looking rational."

"And if I can't?" Duo wondered bitterly. "If I can't keep it together and show them I deserve my badge?"

"If you go in there doubting, then, no, you won't convince them," Heero admonished. "If you don't believe it, then why should they?"

Duo rolled and faced Heero. "Are you saying I'll keep my badge because of attitude?"

Heero sighed and shook his head. "No, of course not."

"That's too bad," Duo said , "Because I have a lot of that."

"Use the facts," Heero told him. "They are your weapons."

"I feel unarmed," Duo replied and then relented. "Let's not talk about it right now, okay?" He took hold of Heero's shirt and then began unbuttoning it. "SO, honey, how was your day?"

"Lonely, until right now," Heero chuckled and he kissed Duo gently. "I missed you." He stroked Duo's cheek lightly. "How are you feeling?''

"Needy," Duo told him huskily and then his hands went to Heero's belt. "I think I need some stress relief."

Heero kept himself relaxed and open, his eyes searching out Duo's real mood. "Only if we go easy... and no argument!" Heero warned. "I've had enough of that today, trying to convince Wu Fei to take himself and his crutches home."

Duo smiled. "Okay, okay. " He finished unzipping Heero's pants and pushed at them. "So, how do we do this?"

Heero gave him a look and replied, "That would be up to you, of course."

Duo's smile turned wicked. "Of course..." He went thoughtful. "You on your back? Me on top?" Heero hid a slight disappointment, but Duo didn't miss it. "I see what you need," he chuckled and Heero looked contrite.

"I need what you need, little baka," Heero retorted lightly.

"Sometimes, it's the other way around, baby," Duo replied as he pulled Heero's pants down to his knees. Slipping off his own pants, he straddled Heero and then reached over to a side table to pull out a tube of lube.

"Sometimes, we can both get what we want," Duo continued as he stroked Heero's hard erection, applied the lube, and then prepared his own entrance. Heero flushed, his cock twitching as he realized what Duo intended.

Very slowly, Duo worked Heero's cock inside of himself. He groaned and Heero gripped his hips, kneading them and urging Duo on. When Duo was settled against Heero's pelvis, Heero buried completely inside of him, he looked down at Heero and smiled with a flaring passion.

"Love you, baby," Duo breathed.

Heero took hold of Duo's braid and kissed the end. "The storm and the calm at the center. The sharpest thorns and the soft petals of the rose."

Duo blinked down at him. Heero smiled and it was a smile full of tenderness, love,.... and trust. He was reminding Duo just how deadly Duo could be, how their lovemaking could go violently wrong if he forgot and let himself fall into darkness. It was the same with his job as a Preventer agent, Duo realized. He could be deadly, it could go all wrong... if he let it... if he forgot... but it was up to him to make certain that didn't happen. Heero was letting him know that he was trusted to do just that. He hadn't killed Grange when he could have, instead, he had reacted the way he had been taught. In a raging flood, frightened by a man, Duo had stayed in control and gotten out of the situation.

"I didn't save him," Duo muttered.

"There is not a man or woman alive who hasn't been in a situation that they couldn't handle," Heero pointed out. "Grange has been in them too. You couldn't save him, even if you had held on, and he couldn't have saved you.... or Kit... or Wu Fei. You were all helpless."

"I panicked," Duo ground out, not letting go of that fact.

"To a degree, yes," Heero conceded. "But you didn't let it kill Grange and you saved people on that helicopter when it counted, when you could make a difference."

Duo thought about that. It was hard to let go of the notion that he had failed, though, despite Heero's logic. It could have all gone wrong... very wrong.

"Every one was saved. Every one is alive," Heero stressed. "You were instrumental in bringing that about. That's what you have to say when you are questioned. That's what you have to believe, little baka."

Duo snorted. "All I wanted was a fuck, Baby, not a psychoanalysis and some Haiku."

"It wasn't-" Heero began and then sighed and smiled again. His hands kneaded some more and then ran along the crack of Duo's ass and teased where they were joined together. Duo shivered. When Heero's hand wrapped around his erection tightly and began to stroke, he forgot about missions and inquisitions, forgot about everything but the hard feel of his lover as he began to ride Heero, rocking up and down on his length.

The world faded into waves of passion and heat. Aches, pains, injuries all disappeared and only Heero's strong hands slowing his motions and forcing Duo to be more careful, kept him from forgetting all together. Heero bucked and spasmed, crying out in a long drawn out moan as he shot hot come into his lover. Duo rode him to completion and then moved forward so that Heero could take his aching need in his mouth. Only a few strokes of that hot, moist sheath, and that rasping tongue, was enough to send Duo crashing into his own climax. He spurted come, every muscle quivering as Heero sucked him dry.

Collapsing on top of Heero, Duo was held loosely by those strong arms. Heero was smiling in a way that was languid and soft, loving, but still edged with passion. He was so beautiful that Duo ached for him again. He contented himself with nuzzling close and saying, "I want to be as good as you think I am."

Heero stroked a hand down his braid and replied, "You are, Duo, believe in it."
