Chapter 4:

The winds died down just as fast as they appeared to Duo’s relief. He blinked his eyes blurrily behind the fold of his arms feeling bits of dirt fall from his long lashes. He wiped any dirt that remained before finally looking down at the scroll. The spell he read glowed violet in front of his eyes rippling the air above it with metaphysical heat.

“Okay, Duo, what did you do?” He questioned himself. Slowly, he turned around to see what had changed inside his cave. It was still the same other than his illumination spell had been blown to one side of the cave and buried under a thin layer of dirt. He shook his head slowly and went to uncover the spell.

The pale light flickered appreciatively before floating back into the sky. He should really get around to learning a spell that created fairies. Not that the ball of light floating in front of him wasn’t alive enough. It just would be nice to have a companion.

He turned slowly to see if anything looked different this time now that the lights were on. When he came to a wall of darkness, he jumped back. The darkness jumped back as well taking up the same stance he took.

Duo blinked and cocked his head in confusion. The darkness mimicked. Slowly, he let his eyes trail down to the dark figure’s feet. It had none. Well, it went from the figure towards him to his own feet. He looked up again then straightened. The darkness did the same as well. Now that it was standing straight, Duo could identify the thing as being his shadow. “So I have a shadow minion now?” He squeaked scratching at his head.

His shadow did the same showing its mirrored confusion through the movement. Duo snorted and threw up his hands in a helpless gesture. “That’s what I get for not reading the fine print, I guess.” He said as he watched his shadow move with him. “Now what do I call you?” He asked the once inanimate entity. He moved slowly towards the scroll keeping an eye on the shadow only because he wasn’t used to a second presence being with him yet.

The spell had stopped glowing and a word had formed just below it. “Deathscythe.” Duo read out loud. He turned to his shadow. “You’re Deathscythe.” He repeated. The shadow pointed to itself. When Duo nodded it jumped into the air fisting its hand upward. Duo laughed as he watched its antics. It was just like him in a way. “Well, I have a minion. Now what to do?”

Sudden shuffling on the surface ground sent the young thief on edge. He looked up where his cave peaked out slightly only to see a glimpse of a figure moving pass. “What was that?” He questioned. He looked back to Deathscythe and raised an eyebrow. “Okay…you’re my minion so…uh…go see what that was.” He said pointing to the opening. He sweat-dropped when the shadow only mimicked him. “I guess I have to figure out how you work.” He grumbled. He closed his eyes and concentrated enough to silently create his usual stairway leading out.

He was about to go out of it when he thought better of it. He fisted one hand then raised two fingers. He repeated the same thing with his other hand holding the fingers of his first hands within the second one. “Teleport.” He whispered. In seconds his body disappeared without a sound or bit of smoke.

Onyx eyes looked down at the leaves covering a good portion of the forest’s ground floor. It was suspicious for them to be down there. A soft wind picked up sending strands of raven fine hair tossing in the wind until the strands were tucked safely out of the way. I don’t see anything other than these leaves on the floor. Is it possible for him to be underground?

The thought was sent then received before being answered to. [I wouldn’t be surprised. But remember just watch him. Don’t make a move until I say]

Of course

[I know I can trust you, Wufei]

With that the connection was terminated leaving the dark haired warrior to his task. He was dressed in a pair of loose fitting white pants with a silhouette of a dragon going down the pants leg. His shirt was a simple fitted black sleeveless tunic. He was agile and graceful but nothing less could be expected of him. He was Wufei Chang, last of the Dragon Clan.

Wufei moved quickly making a quick circle around the area of leaves from a distance. Once that was done he moved closer making another circle. He could feel the residue of a very powerful spell still trickling out from inside. He could also hear the voice of his target. Location confirmed, he jumped and flipped easily into the air landing the branch of a palm tree. He hid carefully behind the big leaves throwing up a guise spell just to make sure.

Seconds later, his target was standing above the leaved area. Wufei frowned. Had he come out of the cave?

**

Duo scanned around the area of his hideout. There was nothing he could see that was any form of danger in his opinion. He stuffed his hands into his pants pocket. Well, he was out here and just in case he was being watched……

He turned to look over the trees around him. There were over ten different kinds of trees on the island. He shrugged and stalked away from his cave not bothering to look back. Behind him, his minion followed with all the grace that a shadow could have.

Wufei watched the thief walk off from the spot. Surely, that was where he was staying. He was sure of it. Quickly, he jumped from the branch he occupied to one that belonged to a large sequoia. He continued up the tree until he was well over the entire forest. His eyes focused sharply on his target as he jumped from one sequoia to another. There were only three sequoias on the island making his travel short. He ended up on the one just in the middle of the island. It was good enough.
He sat carefully and threw up a guise just to be careful. If the thief looked his way all he would see is a raven perched on a branch.

**

Duo yawned in boredom as he reached the shoreline of the island. Why had he come here? This was where he had had his short talk with Heero. Nothing had changed since he’d been there other than their footprints being washed away.

“The boredom’s getting to you, Duo.” He chided himself and stretched. He flopped down lazily opting to take a nap in the sun. If he was lucky a guard would come along and try to take him in. Then he would have something to do. He yawned again throwing a hand over his face to block out the sun. His eyes stared in a daze into the sky just where a tree stretched. It was a pretty big damn tree. OH, and there was a bird in the tree too.

He mentally yawned. In seconds he was asleep.

**

Wufei shook his head ruefully. Heero should’ve given the order to take the braided thief in by now. He could’ve easily bought him down. Both men were acting like fools in his opinion. One was falling asleep out in the open while the other wasn’t really showing any initiative to catch the other. //Love sick// He thought snorting to himself. //That one *wants* to be caught and the other is enjoying the chase// He shook his head again and repositioned himself on the branch. This was going to be a long assignment.

TBC……

A/N: Gonna leave it right there. Nothing too out of the way happening. There might be some action in the next chapter. I don’t know. I’m drawing a blank right now but it’ll come to me. ja ne!!
