Part 12
Duo stared out over the cityscape as the elevator rose. "Wow!" He exclaimed as they cleared the highest of the other buildings and the city spread out beneath them.
"Breath-taking, isn't it?" Heero asked him.
"Sure is! Man, you never told me it was this amazing!"
"It gets better."
Duo turned to look at him with wide eyes. "Really? How can it get better than this?"
Heero explained about the New Years party in Times Square and the ball dropping and all the other celebratory events. Duo gawked in awe of the descriptions of the parties they would attend and the people they would meet.
"I intend on you meeting my family, if you have no objections...." Heero asked, the inflection at the end making the statement questioning.
"Sounds great!" Duo chimed. "I've never had a real family. From as far back as I can remember, it's always been just Tro, mom, and me."
Heero pulled Duo against him and just held him. Heero knew about Duo's family, they'd spent many nights talking in the afterglow of their love making. Heero was determined that he would make Duo the happiest person in the world. And the first step was to give him a family, even if it was a pseudo one.
They gazed out over the restless city as the sun sank below the horizon, holding one another and basking in the warmth of (hopefully) eternal love.
--------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------
"C'mon, Duo. You'll enjoy yourself, I promise! They'll love you!" Heero said, he was very enthusiastic about presenting Duo to his family. They were dressed in fine clothing and looked very sharp.
"I feel funny in this, Hee-chan," Duo complained, plucking at his crisp trousers. Heero'd picked out a nice outfit for him, consisting of black slacks and a deep violet silk button up over a white t-shirt.
"You look nice, trust me. Besides, it suits you." Heero pressed himself against Duo's back and wrapped his arms around his koi's slim waist. Duo turned in his grasp to stare into prussian eyes.
"I love you," he said, snuggling against the muscled chest. Heero just held him closer.
"I love you, too."
Duo pulled back a little and looked Heero over. He was dressed in khaki slacks and a black t-shirt, looking much like one of those Fruit-of-the-Loom models. "Let's go, before I lose my nerve."
"They'll love you, don't worry," Heero said, grabbing his jacket and following Duo out of their apartment.
---------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
Duo fidgeted as Heero rang the doorbell. "Heero, what if they object to you and me?" he hissed under his breath.
"Don't worry. They won't object, trust me," Heero said, turning to look into scared violet eyes.
"I do, it's just--" he was interrupted by a finger placed across his lips.
"Like I said, don't worry. There is absolutely nothing for you to worry about."
The door opened and a stiff looking man poked his beaky face out. "Mmm, yes?" He inquired.
"Hey, Baxter," Heero said.
"Ah! Heero! Please come in! Your parents have been expecting you!" the butler said, ushering them into the house. "I'll announce you immediately."
They followed him into the sitting room where they were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Yuy. "You must be Duo!" Mrs. Yuy cooed. "We've heard so much about you from our dear son! Please make yourself at home!"
Duo instantly warmed to her, she was so genuinely happy and pleasant. Mr. Yuy placed a strong hand on Duo's shoulder and smiled down at the boy.
"Don't worry, we don't bite."
"Much!" his wife chimed, a silly grin brightening her refined features. Duo saw where Heero got his good-looks. She was astounding.
"Now, Gwen, don't frighten the boy!" Mr. Yuy chided, playfully. "So, are you enjoying New York?" He asked Duo.
"Yes, sir. It's amazing!" Duo said, taking a seat when Heero sat down.
"It's Richard, call me Richard.... please."
"Yes, sir-- I mean, Richard, sir, uh," Duo was a nice shade of pink, feeling very awkward and out of place.
They talked for a time, Duo becoming more comfortable by the minute as they instantly accepted him as a member of the family, which he supposed he was.... in a way.
"So, Duo. What's California like?" Gwen asked, batting her lashes. "I'd love to know about the place I sent my son."
"Well, for one it's hot and never snows. Um, there are palm trees and beaches everywhere. It's a great place to live," Duo said, trying to think.
"Oh, Richard! I'd love to spend some time out in California!" Gwen sighed, giving her husband a pleading look.
"I don't see why not. We've already dumped our son out that direction," Richard chuckled.
After a while, they moved to the dining room for dinner. Duo was careful not to offend, and ate with all the dignity that his mother had tried to train into him. He'd obviously been successful for the conversation never became tense or distressing. The entire meal was lighthearted and carefree. After dinner, he and Heero bid them farewell and returned to their apartment.
---------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
"So?" Heero asked.
"'So' what?" Duo asked, getting out of his clothing and placing it neatly across the chair.
"What did you think? No need to have worried, right?" Heero said. He was practically radiating smug. "They loved you. And approved wholeheartedly."
"You're right. They're wonderful, Heero. I felt so welcomed."
Heero wrapped his arms around Duo. "That's 'cause you were. They approve and love you as if you were their own."
"Mmm," Duo mumbled thoughtfully.
They crawled into bed and flicked the lights out. Tomorrow was a big day, they need their sleep.... but sleep could wait, at least for a little while.
