Chapter 2 (In A Gilded Cage)

*THUD*

"OOOUUUCCCCHHHHH!"

"ARE you okay, Sister?"

"OOOOH, NO, NO! DON'T LET THAT DOOR SHU..."

Sister Relena shouted and ran to try catching the heavy metal door before it slammed shut but to no avail. She looked through the thick glass to see if the keys where still outside in the lock and to her dismay they were.

"We're locked in," she informed Father Heero in defeat.

"What? But how?" he asked.

"The door locks from both sides and the keys are out there." She gestured at the window.

"Oh gosh, I am sorry Sister," the priest apologized.

"Oh its okay, Father Heero, you didn't know. And if the last light in here didn't blow and I hadn't bumped my leg on that stupid desk...owww." The nun leaned over to rub her now bruising knee.

"Are you sure you're okay? I mean, it sounded like the whole desk fell on you."

"Oh yeah, I am fine...I would just love know how we're going to get out of here," she told him with a small chuckle.

"Well, first, let's find some light," he said as he went on to find the desk lamp hanging over the side of the table by its wire. "Ah, here we go," he reported and set it back up right then turned it on. A dull yellow light lit up a small portion of the room. "Wow, not much light is it?"

"Well, its better then nothing, I suppose," she said with a smile. "That's what made so much noise?"

"Yeah, I guess so. Here, have a seat." He pulled out the chair for her. "Let's have a look at that knee."

She did sit down but protested, "I am sure its fine, Father."

"Please, with the titles, just call me Heero, okay?" he requested while he hunched down in front of her.

"Okay, only if you do the same."

"You want me to call you Heero too?" His voice was laced with humor as he took hold of her knee to examine it.

Relena gave a short, huffed laugh at his comedic antidote but her smile quickly disappeared when his warm fingers gently gripped her nylon-covered skin. She even held her breath. It had been a long time since a man had touched her. But before her mind had time to contemplate the feelings that coursed through her and just what they meant, the sting of pain slapped her brain.

"Isshhhhhouuuuwwwww," she hissed in a breath as Heero applied pressure to the wound with his handkerchief.

"Yeah, you got a pretty nasty little gash here," he stated.

"Gosh, I didn't even know I did that...ouwwuuuu." She sat and let him stop the bleeding.

"I think you'll live though. I see no need to amputate," he teased.

"Wow, I didn't realize you were a comedian who also listened to confessions," she mocked, laughing as she leaned over her crossed legs to look at the cut.

Unbeknownst to her the light pink rayon blouse under her baby blue cardigan sagged open. The reflection from her silvercross pendent caught Heero's eye, making him look up as he laughed at her witty come back. He couldn't help but glimpse right down her shirt and see her white satin covered breasts. Instantly his mind was filled with wicked thoughts that a priest should never have so just as quickly he moved his gaze up to her face. But his mind betrayed him again, rendering him to think how beautiful she was with a smile still lighting up her face.

Luckily she was preoccupied so she didn't see the blush on his cheeks that he was sure was there.

Heero swallowed hard and tried to regain his composure but as if she scented something was amiss her eyes darted up to meet his. He blinked and looked back at his hand on her knee, hoping she didn't see the guilt reflected in his irises.

"I think I can do that now," she informed him tenderly going to take hold of the cloth he was still pressing against her skin.

Glad she seemed not to notice his impasse, he allowed her take over softly agreeing, "Oh, of coarse."

Yet he was still feeling unnerved by his inexcusable thoughts. Heero nervously ran his hand first through his unruly bangs and then rubbed both sweaty palms on his black cotton-covered thighs. He exhaled a deep breath then filled the uncomfortable silence by asking, "So do you think there is a key in this desk?"

"Ahh, I think it disappeared a long time ago. But it wouldn't hurt to look."

So they proceed to basically rip the ugly metal green desk apart with no success of finding a spare key. They only found old pens; papers, phone books and some old alter candles plus matches.

Then they searched for other ways out and Heero was now investigative one.

"Please don't fall." Relena was concerned as Heero stood up on a row of wooden filing cabinets.

The heating ducted made his form seem headless and made his voice echo. "Well, only half the kids in this school could fit through here."

"Ah, well, I wasn't exactly sure how you were going to get out through there anyways."

"I wasn't either. But it was worth as shot, I guess," he told her with a chuckle. While he reached in the vent behind his head to pull the grate back into place his hand found something more. "What's this?"

"What is it?" Relena asked while Heero carefully removed the item in question from the opening.

"It's a picnic basket." He cautiously went on to hand it down to Relena. "Watch...it's a little heavy."

"Uhh...," was a noise she made stretching to retrieve it from him. "Kay got it!"

He let go of the handles and straightened. Then he took another peek inside the hole to see if there was anything else in there.

"And there is a blanket in here too!" he exclaimed taking it out as well and handed it too down to Relena only after she had put the container on the desk.

While Heero climbed off the record drawers, Relena lifted the lid of the basket and looked inside.

"Humph... there is food in here and it's fresh!"

"Is there a note or anything?" Heero questioned.

"Nope, nothing. Just some covered dishes and red wine with two large cold packs. Oh and some glasses too," she informed him.

Heero unfurled the fabric now in his hands and they both watched as a pillow fell to the floor.

"I wonder why somebody put these things up there?" Relena was thoroughly confused but Heero had already pieced the puzzle together.

"Ya know, it's been a long time since I've had a romantic evening but it looks like that's what someone else had planned for tonight." he educated her.

"OH! Wow, I guess it's been a long time for me too." She blushed and giggled slightly.

Another uneasy moment passed between them and this time Relena was the one to break the tension. "I wonder who did this?"

"God only knows." Heero shrugged and folded the soft, plush material back up, placing it on the desk laying the over sized pillow on top.

"Yeah, he would." Her tone was docile.

"Hmm...," he acknowledged.

"Oh, well now all we have to do is wait for the couple to come and rescue us!" Relena got excited.

"I don't think whoever they are will be as thrilled to help us out. I mean they went through a lot of trouble to put this stuff up in the duct." He plucked at the blanket as he continued, "Its most likely that they don't want to be found out. I think once they see those keys in the lock they're going to turn tail and run."

Relena was auditable in her disappointment, "Ulh, you probably right, shoot."

Heero raised his eyebrows at her verbalization. He knew her pretty well and never witnessed her to say anything close to a four letter word.

"So, what do we do with it now? Do you think we should put it back up there?"

"I think we should eat it," Heero stated.

"Heero!" Relena gave a scoffed chuckle, "We can't do that."

"And just why not?"

"Because we can't, that's why!"

"Sure we can. Trust me Relena, the person who left this here isn't coming to get it any time soon."

"Hey you don't know that for sure! They still might come down here and save us. All we can do is pray."

Heero chuckled and jested, "Yeah, I guess that's our job, isn't it."

Relena rolled her eyes at him but laughed along with him and she knew he was right. Those people wouldn't come to get the food once they saw the keys in the door. She could hope they did though.

"Well...why don't we get to work on Duo's file with the old copier in here and see if someone shows up. And if they don't after awhile then we'll eat it. Okay?"

"That works for me," Heero settled.

To make herself more comfortable, Relena went to remove her habbit.
