Chapter Six

Heero work up feeling very warm and comfortable, except for one thing. Something was tickling him, and as he opened his eyes to see what it was he was confronted with a mass of chestnut hair spread out near him on the bed. Then Heero realized where he was. In Duo's bed. It was Duo's arms that were wrapped around him and Duo's hair that was tickling him. Heero also realized that it was later than he normally slept and that there were no other sounds in the house.

He quickly sat up and looked at the watch that never left his wrist. It was an over sized orange dive watch with a dial that lit up in the dark. It was far to big for his thin wrists and he had it on the last notch in an attempt to make the wristband as small as he could manage. Heero loved the watch. It reminded him of a watch worn by a fictional character that he looked up to a great deal.

The time said it was Friday 11:42 in the morning, and Heero should have been in third period by now. Why didn't Mrs. Maxwell wake Duo and him up? It was always an ordeal to get Duo out of bed in the morning. Heero should have at least _heard_ the attempts, especially if he was in the same bed as Duo.

He sat up and looked around. Duo had the blinds drawn so the room was darkened: the lighting tinted by the forest green shade of the blinds that covered Duo's windows. He saw the silhouettes of Duo's furniture and piles of clothes.

Duo's bedroom was painted a light sea green color. He had shelves filled with all kinds of knickknacks and toys and magazines. His desk was so hopelessly cluttered that Heero didn't know how he was able to do any work on it. Duo had a small stereo system in the corner and stacks of CDs next to it and scattered around the rooms and shelves. Band and movie posters graced the verdant walls covered up most of the space around Duo's bed. The carpet in Duo's room was a beige color and thick, it felt nice to walk on it bare foot, but you usually had to watch where you stepped in Duo's room because there was always clothes and CDs liberally scattered about the floor. Duo had a chest of drawers painted a dark green to match his shades; the drawers were almost always empty because Duo preferred to get his clothes out of the laundry basket or off his floor.

After his examination of the room Heero decided it was time for him to get up and see what was going on. He could probably have fallen back to sleep if he had wanted to, but his curiosity overcame any lingering desire to nap some more. That and he was hot. With the blankets and his pajama and Duo's body heat Heero didn't know why he wasn't unconscious from the heat already.

Heero made a move to get up but the arms around his waist tightened and a voice that was surprisingly clear spoke to him from beneath the blankets.

"Where do you think you're going?"

"We aren't in school."

"How terribly perceptive of you…"

"Why didn't your mother wake us up?"

Duo peeked out from beneath the blankets.

"She came in this morning and both of us decided that you needed more rest. I was going to go, but whenever I tried to move away from you, you made these sad noises and clung to me tighter like a beaten kitten. So Mom decided that we could both do with a day off."

Heero gave Duo an amused look.

"Do beaten kittens cling to things often?"

"Umm… Yeah… All the time…" Duo said with a smile. "Especially if their name is Heero."

"I'm not a kitten."

"You cling like one."

"I have reason to doubt the beaten kitten clinging thing."

"You have no faith in me!"

"None."

"Aw, you so mean `Ro! Especially after I skipped school for you today, I was even nice enough to let you sleep in my bed last night!"

Heero blushed. "Oh. Gomen."

Duo yawned largely. "No problem, man. Don't worry about it." He looked at Heero's blushing face.

"To tell you the truth I didn't want to get up either. I kind of like you clinging to me like a beaten kitten." He said with a grin and then bounded out of bed.

"So what do you want for breakfast? Bacon? Eggs? Oh wait… I forgot you don't eat meat. Ok then cereal it is then! Coco Puffs all around!"

Heero looked up and smiled at Duo. "Ok, but no Coco Puffs."

The boys made their way to the kitchen, the house totally silent. Everyone was either at work or kindergarten as the case may be. Duo took out two bowls and grabbed the Coco Puffs for himself and the Grape Nuts for Heero. Then he went to the refrigerator and grabbed the milk, a container of vanilla yogurt and some fruit juice. While Duo got the food from the fridge, Heero poured a bowl of cereal for each of them. Duo came over to Heero and handed him a glass of juice and the yogurt. Duo poured milk into his Coco Puffs and Heero added yogurt to his Grape Nuts.

Duo made a face.

"It tastes better than it looks." Heero said trying not to smile at the expression on Duo's face.

"I should damn well hope it does."

"The trick is to eat it before the Grape Nuts get to be a soggy mess."

Duo still looked a bit skeptical, but began to eat his food. Heero Followed suit hoping that Duo would make some idle chatter to break the silence of the house. It was a bit unnerving.

"So you meet with the lawyer in a few days huh? To talk about the trial?" Duo asked.

K'so. This was not the type of idle chatter he wanted to take part in. Heero was very nervous about the up coming meeting he would be having with the defender that was assigned to his case. He was worried about the questions they would ask, and the answers he would have to give. He would have to talk about it. He didn't want to talk about it. That was the last thing he wanted to do. He wanted so desperately to just forget that any of it ever happened and live in idyllic bliss with Duo for the rest of his life.

He knew he had to though. He knew he had to talk to them. To tell them what happened and why it was done. He had to because he made a deal and a promise, and Heero didn't like breaking his promises. He had too many promises made to him broken. So he had to talk. He had to tell them. But he was still worried and scared, but the worse part was, he wasn't sure he COULD talk about it.

Heero really didn't think he could recount and relive those past few years and still survive with his sanity intact. He was already having panic attacks at the thought of talking to those lawyers, let alone testifying in front of a jury. He had kept such things inside him for so long that he wasn't sure he could open up like that now, or ever. Was he ever able to do it? He couldn't remember.

"'Ro… Hey earth to `Ro! You there man?"

"Ah hai, gomen. I was just thinking…"

"You're worried about the trial? Don't sweat it, they're going to lock that bastard up and throw away the key! I won't let him hurt you anymore. Mom and Dad won't let him hurt you anymore. You've become a real member of this family and I'll be damned if we let that bastard hurt you again."

"Hai. Wakata." Heero whispered.

"Is this J guy really all that scary? I mean you're a strong guy. Why didn't you fight back?"

"Sometimes…. Sometimes it's not that easy."

Heero wasn't hungry anymore. He felt sick to his stomach, as if he was going to throw up. He looked at his bowl of cereal and yogurt and reflected that it probably wouldn't look much different coming back up than it did in his bowl.

"Why?" Duo asked.

"There are always repercussions to your actions, Duo." Heero said and moved over to the trashcan to throw away the remainder of his now soggy Grape Nuts. He rinsed his cup and bowl and placed them in the dishwasher, and walked past Duo, back into his bedroom with its white walls and golden light.
