Chapter 1- The Battle of the Stores
Wufei woke up to see early morning sunshine streaming through his window. He looked at the clock on the nightstand and groaned. The clock read `5:45 A.M.' in glowing green letters. He sighed, pushing his covers off and stretching. As he did, the scent from the pajamas he wore came into his nose.
It was a mixture of lavender and vanilla, with a simple clean scent under it all. He wondered if that was how Duo smelled, or if it was just the detergent and softener used. He went to the wardrobe, wondering if there was anything he could exploit for his own use. He found nothing but a pair of boots and a trench coat, which he knew had been Hilde's because of the numerous pictures. He left them at the end of his bed and tiptoed next door to find Duo meditating in the middle of the room, a small pink candle burning before him on an altar laid with white cloth.
“Duo?” he asked quietly, unsure of what to do.
“Sit. Shh.” He obeyed the command, sitting with Duo, closing his eyes, trying to feel what it was Duo was looking for. Suddenly he felt a wave of cozy warmth envelop him, and heard a startled laugh from Duo. He opened his eyes to see that nothing had changed, but that the warmth was still with him.
“What was that?” he asked reverently, looking into Duo's violet eyes, noticing the golden flecks in their depths.
“Love. I thought it'd do us good to have a bit of it in the next few days.” He grinned suddenly, and the warmth settled in Wufei's belly, wrapping him in good feelings. “So, what's got you up so early?”
“I don't know. I think I felt your spell.” Duo nodded slightly.
“You probably did. I've been working it all night, with help from Heero. He gave me the spell.” At Wufei's questioning look, he shook his head. “No, he's not Wiccan. He just has better resources. Quatre should be up now, and he'll have dragged the other two with him. Breakfast sound good?” Wufei nodded, standing.
“Last one there's a rotten egg!” He ran downstairs, only to sigh. Duo was standing in the corner, laughing at him.
“Well, I guess you're rotten then.” The others grinned, and he sat down at the table, smiling as Quatre passed him a plate of waffles.
“So, what's the plan for today?” he asked quietly, as the others began to eat.
“Well, we'll head to the mall at about ten, and you Duo and Trowa will go to Hot Topic, while I take Heero to get a new shirt. We'll meet up in the bookstore.”
“Okay. I have a rather delicate question. I found a trench and a pair of boots upstairs...”
“Yeah, you can wear them. She wouldn't mind,” Duo said, grinning as he stuffed his face. Wufei could tell he wasn't the least bit happy, but that he'd allow it. He felt the fuzzy glow inside him grow fainter.
“What's wrong? If you don't want me to wear them, just say so.” Duo looked up, blinking owlishly.
“How'd you know something was wrong?”
“The spell... it... diminished. I'm sorry if I made you sad.” The warmth rushed back, almost burning him. He jumped as sparks flew from his fingertips. He stopped them from hitting anything. “Wow...”
The other three stared on in bemusement. Wufei finally noticed them, blushing slightly. He kept eating, aware of the constant warmth in his stomach making him feel sleepy. After he ate, he went upstairs, to get dressed. As he pulled his pajama shirt off, Duo appeared from the shadows into his room.
“I'm sorry. It's just... it still hurts, you know?” Wufei nodded, and began unfastening his pants. He could sense Duo watching him, but didn't stop. He'd never really been body-shy. Finally, Duo looked away, and he grinned. He pulled on the jeans and shirt set out for him before slipping his feet into the slippers he'd brought with him.
“So, what about a walk? Is it sunny?” Duo grinned.
“Grab your coat,” he said, pointing at Hilde's trench. “I'll show you the park.” Wufei grinned and swirled the coat on before following downstairs. “BYE!” Quatre stuck his head out of the den.
“You going to the park?”
“No, we're going to the moon!” Wufei laughed, and they went to the park, where they stayed until 9:30, when they got back home, the others were waiting.
“Let's go!” Quatre squealed, clapping his hands. The others laughed, and they went to the mall. Once they got there, they split up and Duo, Trowa, and Wufei went to Hot Topic. When they entered, Wufei drifted to the t-shirts, a look of rapture on his face. Duo and Trowa grinned at each other, before grabbing him and pushing him into a changing stall and told him to stay put.
An hour later, he had a completely new wardrobe and even some new jewelry. He had his lip, eyebrow, and left ear pierced, and so they got him new rings.
“Thanks,” he said, as they paid for it. Duo slung an arm over his shoulder.
“No problem! Now that you're part of the team, you deserve it. Besides, I like seeing you in something that actually fits!” All three of them laughed. They met the other two in front of the music store, where Wufei was looking at a few new releases wistfully.
“You know, I have all of them, and a cd burner. Do you want me to burn them for you?” Trowa asked quietly, as they pulled him toward the food court.
“Would you? I've heard them on the radio, but...”
“Of course. Let's eat.” They ate whatever they wanted, and went back to the house.
“We'll be going tonight. So get some rest,” Quatre said quietly. The others nodded.
“So, Wu, you wanna play?” Duo asked.
“Play?”
“A video game. I'm not all that tired, and I don't think you are, either.”
“Actually, I just wanted to read or sleep... I'll need my energy for this.”
“Okay, I'm sorry. Want me to come with you? It's easier to sleep during the day, if someone's there.” Wufei looked up at the tone of his voice.
“Maybe... Why not?” They went up to Duo's room, and curled up on the bed, Duo under his chin like a teddy bear. They both drifted off into a contented sleep.
