Duo Maxwell, the tenth Shinigami and the first delta elevated to the rank of God, was hiding in the closet. Of course he knew that it was useless, stupid, childish, awkward, humiliating and completely not squaring with his position. He told it to himself at least four times since he crawled into the cupboard two hours ago.
The thing was, he didn't give a shit.
“Better run, hide and make fun of myself than let them chain me to some psychotic sorcerer,” he told Sister Helen when she tried to prevent him from running away.
Four days of hiding, dodging and sneaking didn't change his decision. Unfortunately, it looked like during those days, people chasing him only strengthened their resolve to catch the rebellious delta.
A few hours ago the youngest alpha, Brice joined the pursuit and directed the betas and gammas to Duo's previous hideout. They were hot on his heels since then.
`Soon they'll catch me. Even the best hiding abilities won't help me to avoid the hunting alpha and this place isn't the best to hide in.' Duo's ears turned in the direction of the incoming group. `Well Gods, here's your chance to help me gain the promised future full of love,
happiness and comfort. GET ME OUT OF THOSE TROUBLES!!! NOW!!!'
“I've found you, Shinigami…” The singing voice accompanied the creak of the cupboard being opened.
“Congratulations. You won the kick in the ass and a week of holidays in hell.” Duo ignored the horrified gasps and started to get out of the small space.
“Tsk, tsk, such bad manners, not to mention the abuse of your position. I understand that memory of the deltas is bad, but I thought that the Gods, while choosing you, did something in this matter. As a reminder: Shinigami can't throw someone to hell for his personal purpose and without the permission of the God of Hell. And the second thing: a God or not, you're still the delta of Astaris and as such, you'll speak to the members of the Council politely and with due respect.”
With that alpha straightened and turned to the door. “Delta Maxwell, you are coming with us,” he threw over his shoulder and left the dirty kitchen of the abandoned house.
Duo stretched, brushed his clothes, murmured “Brat.” and followed the conceited alpha.

“I'm glad to see you in good health, Shinigami Maxwell. We were worried that your… depart would have had an impact on your well being.” Alpha Rhoen topped up Duo's cup and watched bemused as it was emptied immediately.
“No need to be worried, sir. I've lived through worse.” Duo grabbed the last baguette from the basket and sat more comfortably munching on it. The couch in alpha's study was wide and nice to sit on. He wriggled a bit to burrow deeper into the cushions and sighed.
He was taken to the house of alpha Rhoen, given great meal, aromatic tea and a half of the delicious pie. Now he wanted to sleep, but before that they had to have the talk. THE talk.
`Great. I should have accepted the proposal from that human gravedigger who wanted to start up the business with the help of my powers. At least I would have known him before the marriage.'
“Delta Maxwell, I wish that you'd have more trust in the Council and our decisions.” Rhoen started his speech.
Duo quickly swallowed the rest of the baguette and got down to business. He had to play it carefully if he wanted to negotiate the best conditions. In all honesty, he doubted that he'd wriggle out of this marriage - the Council clearly wanted to kill the two birds with one stone - but he should be able to make the deal more tolerable. Now to shift the responsibility on the adversary…
Â
“Yeah, well sir, it would be easier if some of the younger Councilors were more polite and understanding.”    Â
“Ahhh… alpha Brice… yes, we see the problem. Apparently, the newly gained power went to his head. To be honest, we sent him on this mission in the hope that someone will finally knock him in the said head so he would stop looking down on everyone.” Rhoen smiled pleasantly.
“Like somebody would oppose an alpha,” snorted Duo.
“There are some people in our town known for a sharp tongue and an even sharper mind…” Rhoen looked pointedly at his guest.
“I have some troubles, alpha Rhoen, but I'm not insane. I don't pick on alphas with outgrown opinion about themselves. It's not good for health or beauty.”
“I think running away against the wishes of Council pass for opposing.” One brow lifted on alpha's perfectly controlled face.
“And I think choosing an exile and murderer as a husband for someone under Council's care passes for injustice and abuse of power.” Not so controlled jaws of delta clenched.
“Strong words, delta Maxwell. I think a bit too strong for that situation. Alpha Yuy may have done some horrible thing in the distant past, but since then he remained calm, collected and obedient to the Council. The greatest proof of our confidence in him is the fact that two thousands years ago, we eased the conditions of exile and gave him a place in the Council.”
“With all respect, alpha Rhoen, you gave him the status of the Councilor because his abilities were needed during the war. With the old conditions, he couldn't use the magic inside of the Grove, with the new ones he could do it with your permission. To gain this permission, he'd have to meet with the full Council and to do this he'd have to suffer through all the formalities involved, for which you didn't have the time and the power to change. All in all you made him the Councilor to facilitate the matters and you didn't withdraw after making the peace because you realized that he was still useful. It doesn't make him trustworthy for me, sir. Nor make me want to marry him.”
“Quite an apt remark, delta Maxwell. Looks like Gods knew what they were doing, after all.“
“Yes, they usually do. And since they decided to give me the status of the Shinigami and all privileges connected with it, I want to make use of those privileges. I refuse to marry the fiancée selected by the Council.” Duo crossed his arms and glared.
On the first sight his posture, round cheeks and large eyes were giving the impression of the offended child. Looking closely, Rhoen saw the dangerous determination and deadly glisten of fury dancing in the violet pools.
The Shinigami started to surface.
Cursing mentally, his bad luck displayed when he drew the short stew almost four weeks ago, alpha wagged his tail and concentrated on emanating a friendly scent. This ability, possessed only by alphas, got him out of danger. The delta visibly relaxed and the reddish flashes disappeared from his eyes.
“Yes, I'm sorry about the rude remark. Apparently, not only alpha Brice needs some tact.” The alpha bowed his head in apology.
Â
“Still, I assure you that your doubts about alpha Yuy's mental stability and self-control are unnecessary. His behavior during the eight and a half thousand years of his life was nothing less than perfect. His single lapse, albeit truly tragic and on a large scale, took the place when he was only fifteen. You have to admit that it's an age when many mistakes are made by everyone.” Rhoen leaned against the back of his leather armchair and looked intently at Duo from above his intertwined fingers.
Delta blushed and fidgeted.
“Sir! It happened almost four hundred years ago! I said I was sorry! How long are you going to rub my nose in it?”
“Good question, dear boy. How long are you going to give this as an argument of something that happened over eighty centuries ago?”
“But that's different and you know it, sir. I only blew your granary up by accident. He deliberately killed thousands of people!”
“In that granary was stored all of our harvest. I wonder… if you've had asked back then one of those children that had to eat the meager rations all year: whose act was worse, delta Maxwell's or alpha Yuy's… what would their answer be?”
“Children are known from having one-sided view, sir. I'm not a child and I see the global picture so don't try to send me on a guilt trip. We survived that year. The victims of Yuy's attack didn't have so much luck. And your attempts to convince me lose their significance when collided
with the fact that the Council, during all those years didn't announce alpha Yuy's trial period closed.” Shinigami stood up and glared at pale Councilor.
“I find that subject closed. Now if you excuse me, I have to go back home. IT'S GETTING LATE!” Duo turned with the swish of his braid and marched towards the door. His dark aura swirled around the room creating little suffocating threads of blackness.
Rhoen tensed when one of the dancing strings passed by him with muted, but still anguished cry. For a moment he thought it took shape of an elfish face, but it quickly disappeared. Still the uneasy feeling and an echo of a cry stayed.
The thin trails almost left the room along with their master when Rhoen finally regained his senses. Acting mostly on his instinct, the Councilor played his final card.Â
“I wouldn't bother, Shinigami Maxwell. The orphanage was closed two days ago.” Rhoen chocked on the last word when the darkness shot back and hit him in the chest.
“WHAT DID YOU SAY…?” The dark-clad figure turned slowly, revealing red glowing eyes. The darkness surrounded him tightly, materializing a long black cloak. The coat fluttered in the infernal wind and wrapped around the long handle while above the Shinigami's head the shadows were emerging. A celestial light slowly creating the long blade.
After twenty thousands years of talking eye to eye with Gods, facing armies overtaken by madness and arguing with sorcerers weaving killing spells, alpha Rhoen didn't bat an eyelid and looked straight into the eyes of the God of Death. His insides were clenching with fear, but he didn't let it surface. Nerves, nerves were the main point in every tense situation and he gained this knowledge ages ago.
Well, nerves and the power, but since right now he was obviously lacking the second, he decided to concentrate on the more optimistic part.
“Delta Maxwell, I strongly suggest you to get a grip on yourself before you do something that'll cost you more that you're ready to pay.”
“WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT THE ORPHANAGE?” One pale hand raised and gripped
the scythe. The blade flashed when the house shook from the force of the weapon's sinister song. Â
“I said that the orphanage was closed two days ago. We didn't have the choice. The managers of that institution broke the contract.” The older Astaris almost squeaked when the darkness twisted around his chest and squeezed.
“LIAR! FATHER MAXWELL AND SISTER HELEN WOULD NEVER DO THAT! THEY KNOW
HOW MANY CHILDREN COUNT ON THEM! THEY KEEP TO THE CONDITIONS. THE COUNCIL HAD NO GROUNDS FOR MAKING THAT DECISION.”
“The priest Patrick Maxwell and the nun Helen Swallow declared themselves to bring up young Astaris ready to live in our community and take up the job, educated in the things essential for betas, gammas or deltas and obedient to the Council. The current situation, even more than your earlier escape, shows that the last condition wasn't fulfilled.” Wheezed Rhoen and coughed madly when the suffocating pliers let him go.Â
Duo was trembling before him and breathing heavily while their surroundings emerged from the disappearing shadows.
“That's blackmail. Never in my life have I thought that I'd see an alpha using a blackmail to gain something.” His disbelieving voice broke the silence. “What with your code of honor? What with the famous warrior's pride? You want to squander all of this only to join together two inconvenient people? You want to destroy the lives of dozens young Astaris for what? Revenge? Satisfaction? Matchmaking hobby? Does the Council know about your decision?”
“The decision concerning the Maxwell Orphanage was made by the Council. We didn't want it, but after your escape we used it as a last resort. Still we can take it back, but only after the ceremony of you and alpha Yuy's marriage.”
“Bastards.”
“This qualification applies better to you, as I recall your family tree, delta Maxwell. Now tell me your decision, please. You're getting married or you're getting homeless?”
“I don't understand you. Why do you press so much on this marriage? You won't gain any power over us through it nor make someone happy.” Suddenly, Duo narrowed his eyes. "Unless the idea of marriage came from Yuy.”
“You don't have to understand our decisions. When you conform to them, it'll be enough. The same applies to alpha Yuy. When and who he'll marry depends only on the Council's will. Now your decision, please,” Rhoen fixed his eyes on delta.
Younger Astaris glared, but his deadly powers weren't released.
Maxwell Orphanage ran by two humans caught when walking into the Saint Grove ages ago, was the only place Duo could call home. The illegitimate son of a delta seduced by wandering Banshee, he was thrown on the streets as soon as he could walk and eat on his own. Two months later he saw his bearer marrying the gamma who decided to ignore the scandalous past of his third husband. Of course, the subject of the abandoned child never rose.
In the Astaris community the orphans or bastards were a common sight.
Warriors were dying during the skirmishes with humans, orcs, trolls and many others races who wanted to cut down the magnificent Trees of the Grove, grub out the ground for the cultivation or kill the unique animals living in the Grove. The life full of danger and stressful situations was conducive to let off steam on the much weaker deltas.
Delta blushed and fidgeted.
“Sir! It happened almost four hundred years ago! I said I was sorry! How long are you going to rub my nose in it?”

Although, deltas were the most numerous group of the Astaris community, their rights were almost nonexistent. If the delta's sire didn't intervene and penalize the rapist, and usually he didn't, the warrior got away with it and boasted about another brat he managed to create.Â
This custom was so common that nobody was shocked when the delta son of someone's neighbor started to smell a bit like the gamma or beta son of other neighbor. Sometimes three years later to the one of the street gangs from the fourth quarter joined small Astaris. Of course nobody throw out the little alphas or strong betas - such a son was increasing the virtue of the bearer as someone who could give the strong child for the future husband.
For many years the older Astaris who remembered more peaceful and proper times lamented about the decay of morals of the youngsters. Finally, the Council decided to do something with the wandering young Astaris and created for them special institutions.
Weak betas and strong gammas were trained to become warriors; weak gammas and strong deltas learned the useful occupations (for deltas it was usually the work of a nurse, salesman or a cleaner); the rest was gathered in the orphanages and under the cover of learning the profession was prepared to become the perfect husbands. One of those orphanages found its way to little Duo.
Now his home had to bear the fruit of the rebellious actions of its charge.
`Bastards. This is not a choice, it's a simple threat. The Orphanage can't be closed, it's the only place in the Center where little deltas are treated like every other Astaris, not a future sex slaves. Not to mention the fact that Father and Sister will be killed for their disobedience.
'Oh Gods, I don't want to become a bed warmer of some temperamental alpha! Do something! Do you hear me? You have the second chance to help me, as you promised!' Duo felt the growing despair.
Rhoen smirked and straightened his crumpled robes. The ache in his ribs were the only remain of the glory of the being called Shinigami. Right now before the triumphing alpha was standing young and helpless delta who looked more like a lost child than a God.
The Councilor won this round and this moment was perfect to savor the victory.
“Delta Maxwell…” Unfortunately as much as the moment was worth saving, Rhoen's mission wasn't completed. He still had one more thing to attend and it was already evening.
Duo shook off and cracked a smile. He lost the match and his future but he wasn't willing to give his host more satisfaction. Shinigami may be defeated but not broken. And no matter how terrible things he was going to suffer from the hand of his husband, he won't give him the satisfaction of seeing Duo Maxwell's tears. With that promise given to himself, delta smiled wider putting his hands on his hips.
“What can I say, sir? You won. I accept the fiancé designed to me by the Council. Can I go now? Or do I have to give more formal vow? Maybe I should sign some pre-marital contract with my blood? Declare that I'll give my first-born son on the Council's service?” Duo stopped feeling that his voice started to quiver. The events of the last few days finally got to him and started to destroy his disguise. Duo Maxwell the happy, bright smart-ass ready to go Shinigami on every opponent was retreating, exposing the private part of the orphan's soul. Of that part only two humans caught ever glimpsed of. For Duo to show it before the Rhoen
was most humiliating.Â
“Well?” Once again steeling himself, Duo crossed his arms and lifted an eyebrow. He needed to rest and do it soon; four days deprived of sleep were too much even for him.
“No, when you'll say `I swear' during the ceremony we'll be satisfied. Now, there's a beta waiting outside. Please, go with him to the place where you'll rest and prepare for the meeting with your fiancée.” Rhoen walked behind the desk. Sitting on the chair he added, “The meeting will start tomorrow six hours after the dawn. Be ready by then.”
Seeing that the alpha burrowed in the papers, Duo turned and left the study.
This battle was over. Score: everything for the Councilor to nothing for the delta.
