Zechs brought his hand back to his lap then shook his head. "I won't believe you if you tell me he hasn't always been that moody."
Quatre let out a frustrated noise. "That's not it, Milliardo." He spoke softly as Wufei cuddled him close again.
"See?" was all Wufei said, his voice just above a whimper.
Zechs heard Wufei and cocked his head. "Wufei, he thinks you don't like him anymore."
"He sent me away..." Wufei whispered.
Zechs raked his memory. "He didn't want you to be bored, even I could tell you were itching to do something other than sit there and watch him help program. You two are having serious communication issues."
"It is not your place to tell me what is wrong with my relationship." Wufei suddenly snapped.
"Wufei..." Quatre whispered, suddenly shocked at the harsh tone.
"Then why am I the person who keeps having to fetch Duo instead of you?" Zechs was quick with his reply. Wufei had no control over him.
Wufei sat up and glared at Zechs, shaking Quatre off of him. "You tell me, smart ass." His words were no more than a menacing growl.
"Fine, I will. Because you keep chasing him off, or, you fall apart and he deals with it how he knew how, attack! He's kinda feral if you couldn't tell!" Zechs waved a hand, lifting his chin. "Don't go thinking you have any say over me either, because you don't."
Wufei snarled and all hell broke loose. The temperature dropped to Antarctica-freezing instantaneously, and Wufei's eyes glittered with anger. Quatre and Trowa were pushed off the bed by an unseen force. Quatre shouted with pain as the anger overwhelmed him and he passed out. All the electronics in the room suddenly fizzled out, completely drained of power. Wufei's eyes narrowed as he stared at Zechs, and Zechs suddenly felt a flash of pain through his head. Zechs made a low sound, his hand lifted to his head, eyes closing tight as a choked sound of pain escaped his throat, and he moved from his chair to his knees, barely managing to keep from hitting the ground face first.
/I hate you/ Wufei's voice echoed in everyone's ears even though no actual words were spoken.
Duo felt the changes in the other room and pulled the door open to the bathroom, violet cat gaze flashing. "Am I never allowed to leave you two alone in a room without physical harm being done?"
Wufei turned slowly, still glaring. He got up from the bed and slowly walked towards Duo, stopping several feet away from him.
Duo looked back, his eyes glimmering with a feral ferocity, but no anger, more like protective instinct. He wouldn't protect either one though. "Are you planning on taking out your anger on me as well?"
"Depends." Wufei growled, his voice sounding like it belonged to another person. "Want to make me angry?"
"So you can hurt me? So you can have a reason to not want me near anymore?" Duo tilted his head, stepping forward, his voice soft. "Do you want to hate me too?"
"You're the one who doesn't want me." Wufei said as he took a step back, but just a small one. /I don't hate you/ Wufei's own gentle voice rang in Duo's head.
"Of course I want you. I'm greedy though. I want you all to myself and others too." Duo took another step forward. "So you should hate me."
"You are greedy." Wufei's raspy cold voice rang out. "I should hate you..." Wufei's eyes darted nervously around the room.
"I don't want you to, but you should." Duo took another step forward. "I want to keep you, but you don't seem to want me to."
/Did you forget? I belong to you... You keep me and use me until I'm no good anymore, then you throw me away./ Wufei took a step back. "Maybe I should start to hate you..."
"You're my mate, why would I want to toss you away? I am just not a solitary one, I am one of those that needs a pride." Duo quirked his lips a little. "Maybe you should. I can't really force you to. Not one way or the other."
/Everyone does./ Powerful memories rushed through Wufei's mind, even more powerful than the one's he'd been reprogrammed with, and he swallowed, afraid. Absently he wondered if he was hurting Heero or Quatre with the cold and brought the temperature up slightly.
"I never toss anyone away. They leave me. Death, being a permanent sort of leaving." Duo took another step closer, coming within arms reach, but not trying to bridge it. "Does that mean you'll die if I try to keep you? I'm greedy enough to try anyway."
"You can try." Wufei rasped out. He closed his eyes and grabbed his head softly. /I don't want to be thrown away... I don't want to be used up and then tossed aside... No.../ Wufei whimpered a little.
"I can try. Will you let me by though? Will you let me in?" Duo moved closer, just a hand-span away from Wufei, but still not touching. "Will you let me have you?"
/I already have/ Wufei's mental voice was very soft, soothing. And for Duo alone. Wufei suddenly dropped to his knees and the temperature slowly rose back to normal. He'd used too many of his new modifications, too fast, and he didn't feel very good.
Duo knelt down before Wufei, fingers hovering over Wufei's shoulder, hesitant to touch him even for support at this point. He mouthed his words. 'Are you going to keep pushing me away?'
Wufei shook his head. "Only if you push me first." He whispered, his voice returning to its normal tones. Duo moved forward then, wrapping his arms around Wufei tightly, and closing his eyes. Wufei wrapped his arms around Duo's waist and rested his head on Duo's shoulder.
Duo glanced around the room, flicking his eyes open, then closing them. "Are you going to let me be greedy Wufei? Or will I lose you if I am?" Duo tightened his hold, unwilling to consider the idea.
"I don't know." Wufei answered honestly. "If you get too greedy..." Wufei trailed off and took a few deep breaths.
"I would not need go beyond those already here. I have to trust with my greed." Duo nuzzled at Wufei's neck. "Who could I trust more than the pilots?"
Wufei sighed, his arms tightening around Duo as he gave Duo a gentle bump with his nose. He was exhausted. -Not enough...- "I need to go for a walk..." There was no warning before the words appeared, they were simply there.
Duo tightened his grip for a moment, then eased up. "Do you want me to go with you?"
Wufei hesitated for a moment. He pulled away to look into Duo's modified eyes and nodded. "Yes. I would like you to come."
Duo nodded a little and released a breath. "Then can we go outside?"
"That's the best place for walks." Wufei replied as he pulled away from Duo.
Duo chuckled softly, leaning back on his heels. "True." Wufei pushed himself to his feet. He was a little shaky with exhaustion. Duo followed him up supporting Wufei with his hands fanned at his waist.
"Thanks." Wufei led the way out of the room.
The moment the door closed behind the pair, Zechs looked around the room, a hand still against his head. "Do I have a target that only I can't see painted on me??"
"Shit..." Trowa cursed. "And I thought Duo had a temper. What the fuck just happened?"
"Wufei doesn't like me. I thought that was rather obvious." Zechs had one hand bracing him from toppling over on the ground as he tried to ride out the headache that wouldn't go away now.
Quatre crawled back into the bed, having awoken shortly after Wufei calmed down. "No normal human being should have that much anger radiating off them..."
Zechs laughed shortly, then winced. "Barton is the only one that even approaches normal in this group, I believe."
Trowa smiled warmly. "Why thank you Zechs."
"Well, Heero can't die, and I understand he can bend steel? Quatre is an empath, Wufei is doing mind to mind communication and who knows what else. Duo is turning into a cat, and if I grew feathers I wouldn't be even slightly shocked. Barton, you're normal."
"Hey! I was born this way!" Quatre shouted, offended.
"Are you Sure Heero wasn't?" Zechs sounded amused.
Heero snickered quietly. "You're still as abnormal as the rest of us Quatre."
"Normal..." Trowa shook his head. "When compared to everyone else..." -Trowa isn't even my real name...-
"Yeah, but nobody fucked with my genetics." Quatre spat as he pulled back the covers roughly. "Don't tell Rashid I said that." Quatre added a moment later.
Heero looked to Trowa. "Unless you count that strange affinity for animals that Trowa has. Don't get mad at me Quatre. There's no way to tell if anyone tampered with me before J or not. I've always healed incredibly fast."
"Oh..." Quatre wailed, mad and frustrated. "All of you freaks get in here now, It's time for bed."
Heero chuckled softly. "Duo and Wufei are out, shouldn't we settle in everyone at once?" Heero then abruptly started laughing. "Not that there are any lights left to keep on in the room."
Trowa hopped into bed immediately. "Quatre I've never heard you cuss before..." He teased lightly.
"Just get in here Heero. Milliardo, you too, don't think I'm not mad at you for wandering around when you were supposed to be resting either. If you get in bed now, I might go easy on you tomorrow."
Zechs crawled over to the bed, head hurting too much to stand. None of the others made a motion to help. "I'm crawling in with you guys?" He then climbed up on the bed. It was big enough for all of them if they wanted after all, including the other two. It was really curious why Quatre had such a huge bed. "Heero did it. Once I was out, I just found Duo." Zechs shrugged, sliding under the covers. "We have much in common."
Heero toed off his shoes and moved to the bed, crawling in after Zechs. "Quatre?"
"Yes?" Quatre asked, pulling Zechs to snuggle with him.
"Why is your bed so big?" Heero cuddled against Zechs' back, then closed his eyes.
"So I can fit three crazy freaks in it with me." Quatre replied.
"You can fit more than that. So you got his thing recently?" Heero tossed his arm over Zechs to rest on Quatre.
"Huh? Whose thing?" Quatre cracked an eye open.
"Bed boy, the topic of the conversation." Heero prodded Quatre.
"It was a bit of a shock that I actually fit on this comfortably." Zechs voice was a soft murmur. Talking about a giant bed is good. It didn't make his head hurt.
"Oh just go to sleep. I'm tired of your insolence. Be careful. I might have to discipline you tomorrow." Quatre replied and leaned over Zechs to give Heero a playful slap.
"After I'm done with Milliardo of course." Quatre purred, and gave Zechs a smack on his behind.
"I don't think so." The mutter was quiet before the blond in question pulled his portion of the blankets over his head.
Quatre chuckled almost evilly. "We'll see..." he replied mysteriously.
"No!" It was now muffled through the blanket.
"Sleep now, play later." Heero's voice was almost a coo, and he then clamped his hand over Quatre's mouth.
"Heero, you wanna help me with this disobedience?" Quatre asked through Heero's fingers.
Heero snickered as the words came out muffled. "Sleep."
"Tell him what happens when I get pissed off. Hey this is my bed I give the orders around here!" Quatre replied, but he was teasing.
"Sleep!" Heero pressed a bit more with his fingers. "Zechs, cuddle him." Quatre bit him.
Zechs, hearing Heero drop into his Oz name, wrapped his arms firmly around Quatre and drew him close, ignoring the fact that it hurt. "You're the one that suggested sleep."
"Yeah, I did. I order all freaks to go to sleep." He smiled, far too pleased with himself over the new communal nickname.
Heero, meanwhile, was waving his hand in the air. "Is everyone going to bite me?"
"You like it." Quatre purred.
"Yes. So don't do it right now." Heero thumped his palm back down on Quatre's chest.
Outside.
Duo led Wufei back out to the area he'd camped out at when he'd had his mental attack, remaining quiet. After a few silent moments Wufei laced his fingers with Duo's, wanting to feel him near again. Duo squeezed Wufei's fingers, and then glanced around the garden area, his hand lifting to gesture at the tree he'd been in. "I was up there."
Wufei nodded and smiled a little. "Do you mind if we sit on the ground this time?"
"No, I don't mind. You're more Earthy than that so I didn't expect that you'd want to come up the tree." Duo glanced around, taking a deep breath as he twitched his braid from side to side.
"How about over there?" Wufei asked and pointed to area close to a small pond that had some grass surrounded by some flower bushes.
Duo nodded, his bare feet not even whispering as he moved through the grass. "Looks good."
Wufei smiled and led the way and took a seat on the grass, patting the space next to him on his left and looking up at Duo hopefully. Duo settled next to Wufei easily, sitting on his knees. He wasn't in the mood to start any conversations. Wufei scooted over and rested his head on Duo's shoulder, just watching the moonrise over the pond quietly. "Let's talk."
Duo wrapped his arm around Wufei, and swept his eyelashes down as he just breathed Wufei in. "I'm reluctant to."
Wufei nodded and sighed. "How come?" he asked softly. "Are you angry with me?"
"No. You just seem to get upset every time we talk." Duo tightened his arm around Wufei, watching the play of moonlight over the water.
"I'm not upset now." Wufei let his arms remain at his sides, his hand just brushing against Duo's thigh lightly.
Duo tipped his head to the side, resting his cheek against Wufei's hair. "No, you aren't. I'd like you to stay that way. Things have been so hectic since that last trip into an Ozzie base... It's like it's an entirely different world now."
"I've been angry, and I can't help it. I'm not myself. They fucked with me and took my control away..." Wufei's fists clenched. "I've always had control... and they made me so weak, and I know it... But I can't help it! I wish it never happened..." Wufei finished with a whisper.
"Wishes don't fix anything. You're still the same outside. I can't even say that. Look me in the eye Wufei, even if I was fully dressed, is there a single way you could take me for normal if you looked me in the eye?" Duo lifted his head, turning Wufei's chin to meet his eyes. His now feline eyes. He had felt when they changed.
Wufei looked sad for a moment, and then suddenly he grinned at Duo. "Duo, you were never what I'd call normal in the first place." He teased then sighed and looked away. "Duo... you say that now... but something's happening to me." He looked at Duo again, "How do you know I'm not going to grow stripes and tail when I wake up tomorrow?? Do you know how afraid I've been?" Wufei clutched Duo to him. "Seeing you get stripes and seeing... I stumble around and think to myself, what did they do to me?" Wufei started to shake a little.
"I'm not sure if remembering is better or worse. All I know is that at least I know my why." Duo drew Wufei close to him, burying his nose in his hair. "I know they were loading me with suppressants to keep my physical changes from happening. The first day we got back, everything was bright and loud and smelled too strongly. I already had warning. I can't do anything metaphysical anymore than I ever could though."
"They must have given me some then too..." Wufei added quietly. "All the evidence points to it."
"I'm not really sure what they did to you when I wasn't there, but I know what they did to me. There are a few small gaps, but I remember." Duo nuzzled at Wufei, closing his eyes as he just relaxed.
"Will you tell me?" Wufei asked quietly.
"I don't want to tell you all of it... I don't want you to blame yourself for any of it." Duo's voice was quiet, like he was testing the waters.
Wufei sighed. He knew that he'd blame himself for everything that had happened. First, for not being strong enough to get them out of that complex in the first place, and second, for caving in when they were captured, or even prior to that, dragging Duo on that mission... "You are right. I will blame myself." Wufei admitted.
"So you understand why I cannot tell you... I think the others know. Quatre... When Heero came to get me, he told me that he'd seen everything that happened to you... He may know more than you about your time now." Duo closed his eyes, relaxing against Wufei. "I need to get used to being around people again."
Wufei fidgeted. He knew something had happened when Quatre had comforted him and he had awoken feeling better than he had since they'd returned. But he didn't know what it was. "I need to learn to be alone again."
Duo laughed quietly then. "We need to learn to be ourselves again."
Wufei smiled and kissed Duo on the cheek. "Yes we do."
Duo fell silent, looking over the water against as he rested his head against Wufei. Wufei had slipped a free arm around Duo's waist and just stared off into the distance, enjoying the peacefulness. Duo stared to purr after a little while, his eyes falling partially closed as the night air got to him. He was feeling lazy, but not tired after his nap that day. Wufei suddenly leaned back toppling both of them to the grass. He laughed softly.
Duo made a soft surprised sound and rolled onto his back. "I'm glad you feel better. Mm, but I was comfy!" There was a grin in his voice and he followed his pronouncement by rolling over onto Wufei and giving him a rain of kisses.
Wufei laughed in between the kisses, a huge smile on his face. He placed his hands lightly on Duo's waist and gave him little squeezes as he watched him.
Duo finally settled down, resting his cheek against Wufei's shoulder. "This is comfy too."
"Mm... yes it is." Wufei sighed happily. "This is my favorite part about earth. The moon and the stars, so pretty when seen from the earth, unlike in space."
Duo smiled a little. "I didn't even know what a sky was before I came off L2. It was too cold on that side of the moon to have a see through dome like a couple of the colonies have. It was either gloomy or dark. Here though... It's so bright and colorful... It's a odd to me still, even after the last year off L2." Wufei nodded in agreement, his hands running lazily over Duo's back. Duo relaxed under the touch further. "Nobody ever chooses to go to L2, you know. It's not a place you can survive on your own if your just a little kid... I got lucky, one of the gangs took me in, otherwise I'd be dead. Then the Maxwell church... where I got my name. I got really lucky."
"I know." It was all Wufei said in reply. "You didn't choose to a lot of things that happened to you."
"Nah. But none of you ever wondered why I was so good... You had martial arts, Heero and Trowa had their own thing, and Quatre, well, he's just Quatre. None of you ever asked me where I learned to fight though." Duo closed his eyes. "Well, that's not true. Nobody asked why I needed to fight."
"Alright." Wufei smiled. "Why did you need to fight?"
Duo chuckled softly. "Survival of the fittest. These primal instincts of mine aren't even a little new... I just pushed em back once I got off that floating rock up there."
"Well then I'm proud of you." Wufei said and kissed the top of Duo's head. "For living through it..." He sighed.
"Hey, when it's kill or be killed... Well, you see what I do for a job." Duo sighed a little, a small happy smile on his face as he used Wufei as a big pillow.
"If you didn't become a pilot... would you still be living that way?" Wufei asked softly, suddenly squeezing Duo a little closer to him.
"Nope, I'd have been jettisoned into space. I really doubt they'd have let me stay on board the ship without G's intervention." Duo sounded almost cheery about this.
"They would've just tossed you out?" Wufei almost sat up in disbelief.
"They were seriously considering it! I think that's where they were headed with me too!" Duo peeked up at Wufei's face as he heard his tone. Wufei sighed and relaxed back into the grass again. He didn't really know what to say, so he just gave Duo a kiss on the forehead. "Well, if I'd have stayed back on L2 and never got on that ship, I'd still be one of the street runners, likely have another gang by now too."
"Why'd you get on that ship? To get away from that life?"
Duo actually had to think about it. "I did. But that wasn't all of it. I didn't expect life to get better, but I knew anywhere else had to be easier."
"And is it?" Wufei asked.
"Definitely easier. I need to get back in shape though, I'm waaaay out of it." Duo clicked his tongue, shaking his head slightly.
"I don't think so." Wufei praised, his hands trailing slowly down Duo's body to cup his rear end and squeeze softly, teasing.
"Humph! I'd have to disagree with you. I have to be out of shape, because my fighting isn't quite up to what it should be. All that time training to be a pilot changed my style."
Wufei laughed. "Duo. I just complimented you. But if you like I'll train with you, I haven't worked out since we were captured."
Duo giggled. "Well, not in fighting. Hmm, I held back on that wrestling match the other day cause I didn't wanna hurt ya, think we could go all out?" Duo grinned.
"What wrestling match?" Wufei asked, confused. He didn't even pick up on Duo's hint.
"Rug-burn sex. That time. I kinda remember it." Duo nibbled at Wufei's shoulder where it showed through his shirt. "So you wanna have an all out fight tomorrow in the hanger before we work on our Gundam buddies?"
"Yes. Tomorrow is a good idea. I'm too exhausted now. You'd win." Wufei began to pet Duo's braid.
Duo purred softly, settling against Wufei. "It's a date then."
"We've never had a date before have we?" Wufei asked, continuing to rub Duo's braid and chuckling.
"Nuh uh. Hmm." Duo chuckled. "Our first date is for a fight. Fitting eh?"
"Well... I suppose. Although I want a real date sometime."
"Okay." Duo burrowed his nose against Wufei's neck and just breathed him in, feeling comfortable.
"This is nice though." Wufei sighed happily and closed his eyes. "This should be our first date."
"Then this is our first date, a stroll under the stars." Duo adjusted his arm a bit, moving it to lay against Wufei's side. Wufei shifted lightly and got a little more comfortable. Duo kissed Wufei's neck before settling back against him, just enjoying his presence after the hectic day.
Wufei slowly drifted off to sleep, but not before whispering, "I love you Duo."
Duo smiled a bit, closing his eyes. "Thank you my Fei." It was a faint murmur. He felt deeply about Wufei, but he'd never used the word love for anyone.
To be continued.
