The sea was wild and green, showing her temper to those that had displeased her. The people begged their king to stop the waves' wrath, to calm the tides.

But nothing he did could stop it. The forceful currents kept battering the walls and jetties, sweeping the unwary out into deep waters where the Monsters lurked.

“It must be the fault of those Wilds!”

“We should have done away with them years ago!”

“It is no fault of theirs.”

“How do you know that, Guard?”

The pale mer swept forward, hair billowing out behind him like the foam chases the waves.

“The King sealed the Wilds. Now they are naught but stone, incapable of anything.”

“And how would you know that?”

The people were suspicious, groping desperately for a scapegoat.

“He told me that himself, and I have seen them. They are no more alive that a piece of old bone.”

“It must have been a last curse then!”

“Again, that is not the case. The King sealed them as they slept. There was no chance for them to do so. And you know how Spells of that type work. There is no curse from them.”

He left the people to their panicked bickering.

`You fools. The curse is your ignorance. You killed a part of the king's soul. He no longer has the strength or the will to keep back the waters. What happens now is on your heads.'

The seas pounded harsher as time went on. Scarce few ventured from their homes now, even upon the demand for food.

Their final hours came with the Storm. Waves crashed, battering down walls and homes like seaweed cut by a knife. Fins were torn by swirling sands and flying debris. Spear and beam alike pierced through stone and flesh indiscriminately.

The young king tried to calm the waves, stave off the invasion of vicious water around his people, managing only pockets of change before it was ripped aside.

And with each attempt the white on his tail grew.

His energy was waning, each show of power weakening him and doing less. The sight of his guard and trusted friend being flung upon the spear of a statue was the last he could take. He watched his friends last moments of life before letting the currents draw him out of the city.

He slammed into rocks and floating debris as he was dragged along, too tired to fight it and not caring enough to be bothered.

Heero couldn't help a bitter laugh when he was deposited and the foot of the statue he had made of his brothers. The circlet on his brow fell, breaking upon contact with the odd gray stone.

“Is this what you wanted then? To see me one last time before I die? I am sorry my brothers. So sorry.”

A faint sense of calm and sorrow washed over him, two different senses, one cool and calm, the other with hidden fire. His brothers. Even sealed away in sleep they tried to comfort him. Somehow they were able to reach out, just barely.

Things seemed to fade before the king's eyes. He was so tired and he couldn't even hear the tempest roaring around him anymore. There was warm comfort waiting for him. All he had to do was reach for it.

“I'll see you again.”

And with that the kind expired.

Quatre woke up with a startled gasp. In the bunk above him Duo startled and fell right out of bed. Thankfully there were pillows on the floor that had been tossed off earlier.

Still wild-eyed with surprise Duo glanced up to see his adopted brother with a mirrored expression.

“The King?”

“Yeah. And the mers again.”

It had been years since that dream had come to them.

“Should we go?”

“Yeah. I won't be able to sleep here tonight.”

Silently the two young men slipped out of the house and into the night.

“You left Mom a note, right?”

“Yeah. She'll know where we are. Be exasperated, but know where we are.”

“Well, we did kinda develop a pattern.”

“What do you mean `kinda'?”

Both boys indulged in a small snicker at that. The years had changed them in some ways, but in others left them completely the same. They were in their teens now. Late teens. Nearly graduated and ready to move on to the next step. Maybe that was the reason the dreams came back. A big change in life was fast approaching again.

Somehow those dreams never felt like the normal ones.

“You ever remember what the mers look like?”

“Perfectly, as if I've got a photograph of them hanging right in front of my eyes.”

“Me too. It's sad, isn't it?”

“Extremely. Those idiots. Humans aren't much better.”

“True, but how many know better?”

“There's you and then there's me and I'm beginning to think that's about it.”

“I hope not.”

“That would be cause to grieve.”

“To put things mildly.”

“... do you think they were real?”

“I... don't really know. But I think so. I really, really think so.”

“Me too.”

“You ever think that maybe those brothers are this statue?”

“I don't know. I kinda hope not and that they got free a long time ago. Then again, maybe the world really isn't ready for them. I mean come on, just look at humans.”

“Yeah, but humans have always been idiots.”

“True. Guess then it really depends on if what they really need was there.”

The boys returned to their star gazing. They had everything they needed, and quite a bit of what they wanted.

Silently, they both made the same wish.

“”I hope that they find what they need.””

Both grinned as the third star in their lives shot across the sky.

“They have done it!”

“Have they!?”

The excitement and wonderment in the two celestial voices was barely contained. As it was they broke down for the first time in a millennia and shed tears of happiness.

“They'll be released!”

“A bit at a time, but yes, our children will be free.”

If anyone wondered about the abundance of good fortune that followed the boys for the next several months no one really bothered to say anything about it.

Being a mythological being did have it's perks after all.

`What is that? It's familiar... but not...'

`I feel warm. How can that be?'

`I hear birds.'

`Where is Brother? Where is my Missing Piece?'

`Brother?'

`We will wake.'

`'Soon.....''
