Part the Twelfth - Surprising Secrets

It's been a year since I've seen him last. A whole year since I was last in Japan. Twelve months since my best friend got married.

Far too long since I've held my love.

"I've got a surprise for you."

"Yeah? What is it?"

"I'm sending it tomorrow. You should have it in a few days."

Nothing's changed.

"Not even a hint?"

"Nope. But I promise you'll like it."

"All right."

The ocean still looks so blue. The clouds are still white. The turbulence hasn't changed. And airline food not only costs a small fortune, but sucks to boot. Don't get the ham and cheese omelets. If that really WAS ham and cheese....

"I miss you, Shuichi."

"I miss you too. Are we still on for our web cam chat next week?"

"You bet."

I'm so glad to finally get away.

"Good luck with your match this week."

"We've been training pretty hard. The scouts will be there too."

This was not a decision made lightly.

"Have you decided which offer you want to accept?"

"Yeah. I'm going to sign the papers tomorrow."

But I'm going to see it through.

"Then you'll officially be a pro football player."

"Don't you mean 'soccer' player?"

"Baka! What about school?"

"I'm going to be taking an evening class to keep my credits going. It's going to be tough, but I think I can manage."

School was becoming a pain in the ass. I couldn't stand my English professor. The bastard hit on any female that was diagnosed as breathing. My art class was so boring I hard time staying awake. And I need to know the intricacies of accounting because...why? Aren't basic addition, subtraction and multiplication enough? It's good enough for my bank account!

"I need to go. I'll talk to you later."

"Take care of yourself. Good luck on that test, love."

My semester was a total loss. I passed everything, increased my GPA even. But man what a horrible ride. There were only several redeeming factors. My Psychology class was kind of fun. My roommate was ten kinds of awesome.

"Win that game, okay?"

"Okay."

And my plans to study abroad had come through.

He has no clue. He, being my boyfriend of a little over a year. The love of my life.

The man I'm moving to Japan to be with.

He knows NOTHING about my transfer. I've managed to keep it a secret for the past four months. What a challenge! Keeping a secret is not difficult for me. But this one wanted to be known. I almost told him on more than one occasion.

Our relationship is going well, growing by all leaps and bounds. We talk as often as we can. Email each other. Even chat over the net and see each other through web cams.

Distance is tough, especially since there are so many physical things I miss as well as emotional. When we're finished chatting or after I've stared at him for an hour over the web cam, I have to go to the bathroom and shower. Even in the middle of the day.

It's...well, it's just not right to play with myself when my roommate is trying to study.

Although she has bought me a little something to help out. Didn't I say she was great? Now all I have to do is buy new batteries before I use it again.

But batteries shouldn't be necessary.

Not when I going to the source of my frustration.

I made the decision to move to Japan on my own. We discussed it a few times, but Shuichi was uncertain about his professional soccer choices and when he would take the plunge. Turns out he wants to go pro after only two years of school. I think it's a good move for him. He's got the same fire and determination as he had when he graduated high school, and his maturity level has increased. Not that he wasn't mature before but...I don't think I can explain it. It's just something I can see.

It's just the right time to make his move.

That's when I made mine. My parents were less than thrilled, but they knew I'd do it whether they liked it or not. They argued, of course, but after talking to him over the phone, they lightened up. Neither will admit it, but they like him.

My roommate -- Teri -- was a big help. She reminded me to get the paperwork. She went with me when I talked to the counselors. Reassured me after the interviews and pushed me to study for the exams. In return I was the biggest bitch! But she was there when I needed her.

Mizuki did as much as she could for me, too. She acted as a liaison for me in Japan. Her reference is probably what got me into the school of my choice. A lot of work on her part, and all while she was four months pregnant. To repay her, I get to be godmother to my new nephew.

I'll actually be able to have a baby shower for her since I missed her bridal party. How exciting!

Honestly I'm surprised she hasn't told Shuichi. Granted she doesn't have a lot of time between school, marriage and expecting child. Secrets just aren't her forte, although she's been known to keep a few.

I want so badly to be near him. To hear his voice. To have his arms around me. To hear his heartbeat, feel it under my fingertips. Feel his lips against mine, his hands on my skin.

I suddenly feel the need to shower.

God, hasn't this plane landed yet?

"Welcome passengers! We'll be taxiing to our gate shortly. Please enjoy your stay."

Yes! Finally! I'm coming Shuichi!

Once I find my luggage. Damn, my kanji reading still sucks! Oh wait, over there!

A girl can get lost in an airport. I forgot just how hectic this place is. So fast paced! My luggage has made it in one piece. A crate should be arriving in a few days with the rest of my meager belongings. I've got a few days to get adjusted to my apartment and learn the new campus.

I've got to find my ride!

I hope I don't have to wait forever for Rio. The girl will be late to her own funeral! Wait, I see her now. And she brought her brother. Still a handsome devil, too. This should be an interesting car ride.

"I've got a surprise for you."

More interesting will be Shuichi's reaction when he finds out his surprise...is me!
