The Awakening
Harry's emerald green eyes slowly opened, revealing a very familiar white room with a row of beds that lined the wall in front of him; the Hogwarts hospital wing. Warm sheets covered his body as he lay on the bed, his eyes staring blankly up at the ceiling as he replayed the events in his mind of what had led to this point.
It had all started during that mornings Potions lesson….
(Flashback)
“Now then,” Slughorn said as he stood infront of the class and inflated his already bulging stomach. “I’ve prepared today’s potion for all of you to have a look at class.” he said before indicating to the large cauldron that stood on the desk behind him. Raising himself in his slightly, Harry saw that inside the cauldron was a clear liquid, bubbling merrily as flames licked the cauldron.
As usual, Hermione’s hand was the first in the air, almost hitting Harry in the face as he sat back down.
“It’s metamorphic, one of the many temporary appearance changing potions. It is a very simple potion to make and will temporarily change the appearance of the drinker. The potions colour and sent is normally very difficult to predict, the reason it is colourless is because the extra ingredient hasn’t been added.” Hermione said.
“Excellent Miss Granger, Now can any one tell me what the extra ingredient is?” Slughorn asked merrily before pointing to Hermione’s hand again.
“The extra ingredient is what is added to the potion to change the drinkers appearance.”
“Excellent, five points to Griffindor. Now class, as Miss Granger said this is a very simple Potion to make; so can anyone tell me why the ministry will only allow pupils to brew it in there sixth- yes miss Granger” Slughorn said, looking slightly bemused as he watched Hermione raise her hand.
“Metamorphic, while being a very simple potion to make is also very dangerous. If the wrong ingredient is added, the effects could be anything as only a very few known potion supply’s will change ones appearance.” Hermione said proudly.
“Quite right, take another five points for Griffindor. Now If you’ll all turn to page 50 in advanced potion-making, you will find out how to make Metamorphic along with the effects of the extra Ingredients. As Metamorphic is a simple yet dangerous potion, I would like you all to split into twos for this lesson and at the end we will test your potion. Off you go then. ” Slughorn said before walking back round his deskand taking a seat so that he was now watching the class.
Looking to his side, Harry saw that Hermione and Ron had already paired together and he felt a strange twinge of annoyance as he watched his two friends.
“Um Harry.” Wakeing him from his daze, harry looked to his other side and saw Neville standing there nervously. “
Yea, sorry Neville.” Harry said
“Harry I was just wondering if, well you know that I have trouble with potions” After a nod from harry he continued. “And you are the best at potions in this class; so I was just wondering wether I could?”
“Yes Neville, you can work with me.” Harry said before reahing down and pulling his book out of his bag. Finding the page, Harry quickly scanned the page and found that there wasn’t any hints from the prince. ‘I guess even the prince couldn’t find away to make this potion even simplair’ Harry thought as he got his scales out.
Harry had to admit, this potion was pretty simple; even Neville was finding it easy. They had progressed quite qickly through the brewing of the potion and were know selecting the ingredients that would change there apperance.
“How about this, a dung beetle and unicorn hair?” Neville asked as he looked at the ingredients and there effects.
“No Neville, I’m not going to walk around Hogwarts with bright blue hair and violet eyes fopr the rest of the day.”Harry said firmly.
“Okay, how about this: goats liver and lion fish spine” Neville said enfusiasticly.
“No thank you, Neville. Here these will do me fine.” Harry said, indicating to two of the ingredients.
“A Griffin claw and Hippogriff feather, you’re not feeling very adventurous are you Harry?” Neville asked dejectedly as he looked at harry’s choices.
“Tidy brown hair and blue eyes are enough of a change for me.” Harry said firmly as he reached over and picked out a Hippogriff feather from the jar and droped it in the potion.
Grubbiling quietly, Neville reached into his potien suppies and picked up what felt like to him, a Griffin Horn and without paying attention; dropped it in the potion.
The rest of the leason past fairly quickly, Harry and Neville left the potion bubbling on the fire while they packed away there separate supplies and washed up. Just before the end of the class, Harry and Neville returned to the potion to find it had turned a inky black and a dark grey vapour was rising from the gurgling substance.
“Is it meant to be like that Harry” Neville asked curiously as he took a closer look at the potion before suddenly jumping back and narrowly missing tripping on his own robes.
“What’s wrong Neville?” Harry asked as he watched the round-faced boy steady himself.
“That stuff stinks” Neville exclaimed while taking deep breaths. “Did we make a mistake or something, I’m sure it’s not meant to be like that.”
“Don’t be so sure, Neville.” Harry said quietly while bending down and examining the potion but being careful not to breath any of the foul smelling potion in.
“And times up” said Slughorn “Stop brewing please and bring your potions up.” As his eyes feel on Harry, a look of pure delight spread across his face; as if he couldn’t wait to see the delights that Harry would produce. “Harry my boy, why don’t you and Mr Longbottom come up first.”
Nervously glancing at the potion, Harry picked the caldron up before he and Neville went to the front of the class. Placing the caldron on Slughorn’s desk, Harry glanced at Neville and seeing the boys worried expression; Harry sighed sadly and said “I’ll go first.”
Hesitantly reaching for a glass goblet, Harry poured some of the potion into the glass before taking a quick glance at the professor. Seeing the contemplating look on his professors face, Harry felt his heart skip a beat at the thought of not having to drink the foul smelling potion; but as Slughorn gave a nod of approval Harry’s heart sank.
Taking a deep breath, Harry brought the goblet up to his lips and took a gulp of the potion; it tasted a bit like vinegar.
Immediately, Harry’s legs gave way, dropping the glass goblet Harry fell to the cold stone ground. His insides felt like they were melting, as if he’d just swallowed acid and then an intense burning sensation spread over his body. Suddenly, Harry’s body broke out in convolutions while the class just stood there in shock and watched Harry. Professor Slughorn just stood there dumbstruck, even with his extensive experience in potions, he had never seen such a reaction from just drinking a metamorphic potion and certainly hadn’t expected it from Harry. The only people in the classroom who weren’t frozen was Malfoy and his little gang of Slytherin’s who were doubled over with laughter.
And then just as suddenly as it had started, Harry’s body lay still on the ground and Harry was unconscious.
(End Flashback)
The sound of the Hospital wing’s door close woke Harry from his thought’s. Turning his head towards it, Harry smiled at the sight of his two best friends, Ron and Hermione walking towards his bed.
“Hey mate, how you feeling?” Ron asked as he sat down on the bed.
“Im fine, just feeling a little strange” said Harry
“I’m not surprised Harry, after what you drank.” Ron said with a look on his face that made Harry think he was going to laugh.
“What happened?” He asked feeling rather nervous.
“Neville put the wrong ingredient in, he put in a werewolf tooth instead of a Griffin claw. Trust Neville to muck up one of the most simple potions we’ve had to make all year.”
“It’s not funny Ronald, Harry could have been killed.” Hermione said angrily as she glared at the red headed wizard before sitting next to Harry and giving him a concerned look. “Are you sure you feel alright Harry”
“Yhea I’m fine Hermione” Harry said “So how bad do I look anyway, please tell me I haven’t got a navy coloured spiky hair and red snake slits for eyes” he asked jokingly as that image appeared in his mind.
“Well actually Harry, you don’t look that different. Your face has lost some of its roughness and your hair is a little longer-” said Hermione before being interrupted by the wizard sitting next to her.
“A little, Hermione Harry’s hair is as long as yours” Ron said in disbelief of how his friend could call the change little.
“Yes thank you Ronald, like I was saying Harry; your hair is longer but apart from that you haven’t changed.” Hermione said, smiling kindly at Harry.
Letting out a sigh, Harry sat up in the bed and stretched before noticing the look of surprise on his friends face’s. “What?”
“Harry, your … your”
“Ron, Hermione what is it” Harry asked, getting a bit angry at his friends refusal to tell him.
“Harry, you’re a girl.”
