Prologue
“Well, you do have a daemon occupying your house.” Shika and Emie shared a look as the family whispered excitedly about the news. The reaction was always the same. A shiver of fear and a rush of excitement is what always seemed to follow. The husband’s wide eyes seemed to plead up at the two young women.“D-do you know wh-who it is?” A gulp followed the question as the rest of the family looked up awaiting the answer. Scoffing, Shika whispered into the ear of her partner;“You explain to Mr. and Mrs. Goody ‘bout what it is, I’m going to go find Savvy. Who knows what the Hell she’s found to keep herself entertained.” A crash proceeded the statement from the second floor of the lovely white-picket home. Shika took off up the stars yelling about insurance and lawsuits as Emie kept smiling at the more than fearful family.
The Mother, eyes watering and her jaw clenched tight, she was a beautiful woman despite the fear etched almost permanently in her face. Mrs. Olivia Greensly. Her short blonde hair fell around the sides of her face in a disheveled manner. Perhaps it was because SES had woken her up earlier that morning with her residual demon. She held a little girl in her lap; who could not decide whether she was more scared or excited about their situation.
Her older brother, however, found the family emergency to be intriguing beyond all possible belief. The Father, he was a nicely dressed man, obviously had a nice job and was quite clearly trying to stay strong for the family…But it was also just as clear that he was failing just as fast and hard as the others were. Emie shook her head internally. These people were border-line pathetic.
“Well, Mr. Goody- I mean Greensly- I am pleased to inform you that the particular daemon that is occupying your house is a mere class D-”
“Cl-class D!?” the shaken Mother interrupted. Once again, internally, Emie rolled her eyes. Why do we do this again? Shika and Savvy’s explanations rang out through her mind.
“It pays well.”
“It’s fun!”
“You can help people…”
“It’s fun!”
“And yes, it’s fun.” Outwardly, Emie sighed.
“Class D daemons are simple to get rid of. They are most commonly known as poltergeists.” Another crash from upstairs prompted the two children to jump up. One from excitement, the other from fear.
“Is that-?”
“SAVVY!” Shika was heard yelling from the second floor. Savvy laughed and ran down the stairs. Shika closely followed. Unbelievably, Savvy’s composure immediately corrected itself.
“What have we got?”
“Class D…” both Shika and Emie responded in unison.
“Oh! Pssh, no problem-” Savvy was interrupted by the ringing of her cell phone. Only customers had this number. It was connected directly to the company line back at their headquarters… (This happened to be a small house in which all of them lived after identifying a slew of demons in it. The family gave the house to them as a token of gratitude.)
“Excuse me a moment,” she glanced quickly at the screen. She pulled Emie and Shika aside.
“It’s UAC Labs…”

Betruger leaned back in his chair as he listened to the phone ring. These were the ones. After watching the three girls for over two months he had finally decided that they would be perfect for the job. They were young, and therefore, easy to manipulate. Also, these women were true demonologists. Unlike the fools that worked for him now. A smile crossed his face as he heard the phone stop ringing. A clear, somewhat hesitant voice, came through the phone.
“Hello?” Betruger sat up straight and cleared his throat in an attempt to at the very least, sound like he wasn’t plotting anything.
“Hello Ms. Savvy. This is Doctor Betruger.”
“Hello Doctor…What can I do for you?” Smirking, he leaned back into his chair and flipped through the information that he had gathered on the three young ladies.
“Well, Ms. Savvy, I was wondering if you would be interested in a job here at Delta Labs?”

Savvy turned towards Shika with wide eyes. Emie had gone back to talking to the family about their “infestation”.
“He offered us jobs…” A slightly shocked look plastered across Shika’s face.
“Umm…Well, that’s really nice sir…Err…Doctor, but we aren’t licensed Demonologists, I mean, we aren’t associated with the Vatican…Or the Roman Catholics for that matter…” A dark chuckle passed through the phone, causing a shiver to pass through the two females.
“That doesn’t matter. Your shuttle to UAC headquarters leaves at 0600 hours tomorrow. I will let you and your partners decide if you are going to show up. I expect to see you at Delta Labs’ front entrance when I go into work tomorrow morning. Goodbye.”
Savvy hung up in a dumbfounded manner. She shot Shika a look and mumbled; “we need to get out of here.”
Emie turned towards the both of them. “Hm?”
Shika moved in and did her thing. She pulled a sheet of paper and a card from her lab coat pocket. Handing the sheet of paper to the husband, she said; “here is our bill and the precautions that we recommend you take. Preferably, we would like you to call,” she handed the card to the mother, “this number, an exorcist, immediately. After you have called them, keep in contact and spend the next week in a hotel room.” She smiled brightly at the two children.
“Simply to avoid injury to your little ones. Call us if you have any questions. You have the number.” Shika turned on one heel and went back to Savvy and Emie. They had an amused smile on their faces. Shika looked at the both of them.
“So, are we accepting?”
It was not even the next morning when the three young women sat tensely on a UAC Transporter from Earth to Mars. In the end, after much nagging from Savvy about needing the money that Betruger would pay them, their curiosity got the better of them and the found the next “flight” off of Earth. So yes, there they were. Sitting tensely in excitement and a slight bit of fear. Emie was reading a pamphlet about the UAC and their accomplishments, Shika was reading over her shoulder, and of course Savvy was seeing how many packets of complementary peanuts she could con out of the stewardess. (She wasn’t actually going to eat them, in fact, she didn’t even like peanuts, but it kept her from being bored, so it’s all that mattered.) She was just about to hit twenty-seven when Emie spoke up.
“You know Shika; it was pretty smart of you to mention leaving before our “real” flight was supposed to go. That Betruger guy needs to realize that we make the rules.” Shika smiled at the slight praise and nodded.
“Yeah, Savvy seemed to be on edge when she was talking to him so I figured she must be sensing something bad about him. Which is why I was surprised when she was so adamant about going…” Both girls turned to Savvy. She was now on packet twenty-eight. They sighed and turned back. This was going to be interesting.

Savvy was the first to break the silence...
“Wow,” she exclaimed, “it’s so…Dark!”
Prologue- End.
