Chapter One - Introduction

It was a typical day for Juniper. She had gotten up and ate morning meal with her family and their friends, Sango, Miroku, their son Akino and twin daughters Kamika and Marian. She then had helped Sango and her mother clean up after everyone had finished. Her mother often told her that she did not need to help but she preferred to help rather than watch the twins play or her older brother and father train. After she was done, she wandered off on her own, alone.

That was what she was doing now. Wandering around the forest, going wherever her feet took her. Juniper never had any friends, even when she was little. It wasn't that she was ugly. No, that certainly wasn't the case. Juniper was a very beautiful inu-hanyou. She was tall, slender, and curvaceous with well-toned muscles. Her skin was nicely tanned and she had long, white/gray hair that came down to her butt that she kept in a lose braid. She also had white dog-ears, with black speckles, on top of her head. She looked like her father all except for her eyes. They were blue like her mothers with flecks of gold in them and gold around the edges. She even had a hakama like her fathers that she wore often. It was blue with gold trimming, to match her eyes. The reason the girls of the village didn't want to be friends was because she had strange powers and abilities.

When Juniper was five years old, she began to develop powers. This was partly because her mother was a miko. Some powers she had were she could move things with her mind, read peoples minds and use mind control. She could tell what a person what thinking and then make them do whatever she wanted. She also had elemental powers. She could use the elements, fire, water, wind, and earth, to help her in battles and to defend against other more powerful youkai. She didn't get these powers from her mother, so they couldn't explain how she acquired them. Juniper also had visions. She could see what was going to happen in the future and they would come to her in dreams or at anytime. They came irregularly and she never knew when the next one would be. The girls of the village saw her as weird and strange and didn't want to be around a freak. So here she was now walking in the forest by herself, all alone.

It wasn't long before she found herself in a small clearing not far from the village. No one else knew it was there but her. She had gone wandering one day and found it by accident. She then, after that day, came there often to be alone and think. There was a small pond on the far side with flowers all around it and large rocks to sit on and relax. There were plenty of fish in the pond as well. The flowers were everywhere in the clearing. They were brightly colored and varied in size and shape. There were many pretty butterflies going flower-to-flower gathering sweet nectar. Sometimes there would be rabbits or squirrels playing about in the clearing and sometimes a couple of deer would be grazing peacefully. It was the perfect place to be alone with your thoughts because it was so peaceful.

She went and sat on a rock at the edge of the pond and watched the fish. There were some that were emerald green and some that were red and purple. She enjoyed watching them chase each other and swim lazily around the pond. Sometimes she would wander what it would be like to be a fish and live under the water. She was so caught up in watching the fish that she didn't see the other hanyou enter the clearing. He was about a foot or two taller than she was and very muscular. He had emerald green eyes and shoulder length black hair pulled into a ponytail at the base of his neck. He looked to be human but his ears had a slight point to them. But it was barely noticeable.

"So this is where you wander off too? This place is stunning!" Juniper jumped when she heard his voice and fell off the rock backwards landing in a heap.

"Rune! How did you find me!? Why are you here!?" she stated as she quickly got up off the ground and dusted off her hakama.

"Well, one time I was curious as to where you went when you wandered off and I also followed your scent. As to why I am here; father and mother want a word with you." He stated calmly and leaned against a near by tree, folding his arms across his chest.

"Oh great. I wander what they want to tell me now."

"I'll give you a hint, Jun…it's about your coming of age. I heard them talking about it this morning when I woke up. Dad isn't too happy about it either." With that he turned and started to head back to the village.

"Oh yippy skippy." Jun said sarcastically and rolled her eyes as she followed her brother.

*---At the hut---*

"As you know, Juniper, you are now of age to take a mate. Your mother and I have been thinking about this for some time now." Inuyasha droned, clearly not wanting to talk about this subject.

"We want to talk to you about this so you know about the demon mating rituals and that sort of thing." Kagome explained. "We don't want anything to happen to you or you to get hurt."

"That's nice but I don't think anyone is interested in being my mate. And I really don't want one so…I think that's about it." Juniper said as she started to get up to leave. But her father shoved her back down.

"Sorry, Jun, but your mother is right. We need to have a talk about this. It is important you know about the rituals."

"Why do I have to be the only one getting this talk? What about, Rune? He is of age!" Jun said. She did not in any way want to have this conversation.

"We already talked to him when he came of age last year. Now it is your turn. Besides, it is getting you ready for when the mating season comes around. You will know how to protect yourself better." Kagome said trying to calm her daughter down.

"I already know how to protect myself! I can fight just as well as Rune and I am just as strong maybe even stronger than dad is! I don't see why I have to have this conversation!"

"Because you do! We have to have this dumb talk and that's that! If it was really up to me you'd never ever have a mate!" Inuyasha said a bit peeved at having to have this discussion and because his daughter was starting to annoy him.

"Fine! I don't want a fucking mate anyway! So we don't need to talk about some dumb rituals!" Juniper screamed and then took off out of the hut.

"Jun, wait!" Rune called after her but she ignored him and ran right past him. He could hear his parents arguing in the hut.

"Great job at staying calm! You upset her!" Kagome said upset herself.

"It was your idea to have the damn talk!"

"SIT!" Kagome said and walked out of the hut.

*I don't think my parents will ever grow up. * Rune thought to himself as he waited for Jun to calm down a bit before he went after her.

Juniper stormed through the forest ranting and raving. She didn't want a mate. She wasn't interested in having one. Besides, no one really wanted her anyway. All the guys in the village looked at her like she was some crazed animal. They wanted a nice, polite, quiet wife and she was anything but quiet and polite. No guy had ever talked to her besides her brother, Shippo and Akino, Miroku and Sango's son. If she didn't have strange powers then maybe a guy would be interested in her or talk to her. But no, she had to be cursed with stupid powers. Why couldn't she look more human like Rune did?

Tears threatened to come by the time she got back to the clearing. She headed straight for her favorite rock and as soon as she got there, she fell to her knees as tears freely flowed down her cheeks in torrents. She just couldn't hold them back anymore. She felt ugly and wished she wasn't a hanyou. Why did she have to be the child to look like their father? Why couldn't Rune have been the one? Why did she have to know the rituals anyway? These thoughts and more raced through her head as she cried. Juniper was so caught up and absorbed in her tears that she never noticed the pair of bight blue eyes watching her from the trees above.
