Green Eyed Gold
Nightmare
He stared at the sky. It wasn't as clear as back home. It was polluted and it annoyed him to no end. His eyes saddened as his father promised to come bring him home after the war. That was fifteen years ago. He was ten.
He closed his eyes and let his face bathe in the moonlight. It gave him comfort, peace. He was relaxed.
Suddenly he turned. He had heard a rustle behind him. Yet…
…no one was there.
Scowling he went back to staring up at the sky, closing his eyes again. He heard the rustle again but didn't move. He just concentrated on the sky while letting his senses search out the source.
He wasn't having any luck.
Whatever the source was it was downwind, so he couldn't smell them, and they were nearly quiet enough that he couldn't find them, which was unfortunate for him and lucky for them. His ears twitched suddenly as he heard another sound. He ducked seconds before someone's hand slice through the air where he once was at.
The hand was pale, with twin magenta stripes parallel to each other that went across his wrist in a sideways motion. The fingernails were clawed and there was a flash of white as the hand moved. He recognized that hand instantly.
“…father…”
He jumped seconds later, dodging a low sweeping kick, and twisted in the air to once more dodge another attack by a hand. An unsuspected attack though was what caught him, knocking him into the earth. His father smiled at him, face and clothes half hidden in the shadows. What could be seen was a molten gold eye, silver strands of hair, and twin magenta streaks across his face. There was something fluffy thrown over his should that was mostly hidden by shadows, and bits of white cloth could be seen on his person.
“Come,” his father spoke. “The war is over. Your mother misses you, you know.”
He gave a smile and nodded. The man reached out a hand for his eleven looking son who in turn grasped his firmly. They left the era, back in time to six hundred years where he was originally born.
For one final moment green eyes flashed in the darkness. They swiftly turned gold while raven hair was seen in the light for a second. It turned silver.
Then, all was quiet and he was gone.
…
Sesshoumaru stared up in the moonlight, wondering briefly on how the human wench was fairing. His brother by far had the worst ability to protecting her. He should be protecting her, but she insisted they keep secret. The Lord of the Western Nation sighed and closed his eyes, letting his face bathe in the moonlight. He loved the moonlight, but that might've come from his race, he was, after all, a Crescent Dog youkai.
Crescent Dog youkai were the rarest of dog youkai you could find. They had silver hair—all of them—and golden eyes that mostly had flecks of silver within them. The markings on their bodies though are what made them stand out.
The blue crescent on their forehead was one such marking, although it varied in color for status within the race. The stripes too were a symbol of his kind. The narrowed eyes were usually a trait inherited in the males while the woman mostly contained cat like eyes—which was strange within itself. They had varied attacks as well. His family—the current ruling family—had poison and blood attacks. His father used blood attacks while his mother was a woman of poison. Maybe that was why she was named Ivy….
There were many other unnamed attacks, Sesshoumaru didn't bother to look them up, and he didn't like the paperwork anyway, and tried to stay as far away from his home as he could. He did know, though, was that half-bred children of the Crescent race did not turn out as his brother had. He assumed it had to do with Izoyai, as she wasn't his father's true mate. That was really the only reason why he despised his brother. He wasn't born of the true mark of mate, he was a bastard son.
Sesshoumaru's eyes snapped open and he had Tokijin out before anything could move. His eyes darted around the forest, nose scenting the air, before Rin came crawling out from behind the bushes, where their camp was. Sesshoumaru put the sword away and moved towards the tired child.
“What are you doing out of bed, Rin,” he demanded in his usual stoic voice, but it seemed to have a bit more of a softened tint.
`Damn that human wench,' Sesshoumaru thought briefly. He shook that thought away; right now he had to tend to Rin.
“Rin had a nightmare, Sesshoumaru-sama,” Rin mumbled sleepily.
“A nightmare?” Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow.
“Hai…Sesshoumaru-sama was…dying….” Rin collapsed into Sesshoumaru's arms. The Lord frowned but picked up the child nonetheless. He carried her back to camp and laid her down to rest once more. Leaping up into the tree nearby Sesshoumaru sat down to think.
`I was…dying?'
Soon he fell asleep with questions on his mind.
…
When Sesshoumaru awoke it was to Jaken yelling at the human child he had taken in. He leapt out of the tree silently and just accidentally happened to land on Jaken. Sesshoumaru stepped of said toad.
“Get up Jaken, we're leaving.” The Lord of the Western Nation turned and began to walk, Rin trailing behind him beside Ah Un and Jaken nowhere in sight.
When Jaken woke up from his dazed unconscious stupor Sesshoumaru, Rin, and Ah Un were long gone.
…
Sesshoumaru stopped when Rin began to tire in need of both food and fatigue.
“Keep watch over her,” the Crescent Dog spoke.
Ah Un gave a nod of acknowledgement and Sesshoumaru left to gather food for the tiring Rin. When he returned with fish Rin was asleep, and whimpering. Sesshoumaru to frowned, and he called to awaken the child, as the food had arrived. Rin made no movement of waking up.
“Jaken, start a fire,” Sesshoumaru said. He turned to stare at the immobile Jaken (he had caught up with them a while ago) and growled out, “Now.” He turned his attention back to Rin, assured that Jaken would do his job. Kneeling his frown turned to a scowl, and just before he was about to touch Rin, she woke up.
Letting out a cry the human child attached herself to Sesshoumaru, shocking the Lord. Frozen as she began to cry, mumbling things about `don't leave Rin' `Rin doesn't want Sesshoumaru-sama to die' and such. Slowly he began to move his hands around her into what soon became a hug.
At the fire Jaken was gaping as Sesshoumaru tried to calm the frantic child.
…
Two weeks after the incident with Rin things began to run more smoothly. Rin no longer received her nightmares and was back to being the hyper curious child she was. During their aimless travels Sesshoumaru faintly sensed the human that traveled with his brother as well as several other humans. He was near the village she always talked about.
`Maybe—no. This Sesshoumaru will not consort with that half-breed's wench.'
Even though he thought it, he knew it was just a cover up. He also knew she sensed him.
They would meet tomorrow.
Why he had even grown attached to the woman was far beyond his imaginings.
They would meet tomorrow.
