Part 6 – The Storm Subsides
They walked hand in hand through the field, towards the cave. Yuki occasionally stopped to smell a flower, or watch a bee as it flew about collecting nectar. Inu Yasha was deep in his own thoughts as they entered the cave. He hadn’t realived they reached the final chamber until Yuki let go of his hand and began to run around listeing to her echo. His trembling hand rested on the hilt of the Tetsusaiga, feeling the warmth of the Shikon Jewel now embedded in the hilt. He felt as if someone were tearing at his insides. Finally he called Yuki to him. She looked up from the small pool of water she’d been playing in, all smiles and innocence. Inu Yasha almost wished that she would turn, but then he would never be able to…he cut off the thought. He just had to do it, not think about it, if he did he wouldn’t go through with it. She came to him, looking up at him with trusting eyes. He touched her cheek with his hand, gently as he stared into those grey depths, swirled with blue.
‘Forgive me Kagome.’ Then swiftly he drew Tetsusaiga, which transformed as it left the scabbard, and plunged the sword into her body. Her mouth dropped open with surprise and pain, Yuki looked at the sword now embedded in her chest then up at Inu Yasha, her eyes momentarily flashing red. “Father…hurt Yuki,” she gasped.
“I’m sorry Yuki,” he said, his voice cracking with tears he was trying desperately not to shed, “I’m just not strong enough.”
Yuki stumbled backwards, hitting the wall and slidding down to the rocky floor, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Her eyes closed slowly, her head fell forward as Inu Yasha fell slowly to his knees, hands clenched in fists, hard enough to draw blood. He let the tears come as he howled his pain to the echoing walls of the cave. He crawled to Yuki’s side and took her in his arms one last time, crushing her head to his chest. Inu Yasha gently leaned her back against the wall of the cave, then went to remove Tetsusaiga from her body. He paused and shook his head, then left, leaving the sword.
Kouga was waiting for him outside. “Inu Yasha?”
He just waved away the wolf youkai and trudged slowly, his head down, snowy hair obscuring his face from the world.
“But she wasn’t dead?” Kenshin asked as Kouga finished his tale.
Sesshomaru shook his head. “No. Inu Yasha died soon after of a broken heart. Not only had he killed the girl he had come to see as a daughter but he had betrayed his mate’s dying wish. I went to the cave to retrieve her body, thinking my brother’s soul might rest better if I buried her with him and his mate. It had been many years and yet her body look fresh, there was not a hint of decay as I entered the chamber. Her heart still beat, though very slowly. The Jewel in Tetsusaiga’s hilt must have reacted to Inu Yasha’s deep wish not to hurt Yuki and merely sealed her.”
“Sesshomaru and I caused the cave in and spread the rumor that it was cursed, to keep humans away so that she might sleep forever but we failed in that. We became careless after so long.”
Kenshin clenched his fingers on his hakama. “I only wished for her death,” he said through gritted teeth.
Kouga reached over and put a hand on the swordsman’s shoulder. “Kenshin, there was no other way. Do not blame yourself.”
He shook his head. “I will not kill again.”
Sesshomaru nodded. “The wind has carried your wishes to one who can make a sword for you. We will take you to him. If you give him Tetsusaiga, he will give you the Sakabatou.”
Kenshin looked at them with a curious look. “Why have you both avoided touching the sword?”
“The youkai may not touch it. The ningen may not wield its true form. Only those of blended blood may reveal its true power. That sword is usable only by descendents of my father’s line and only those of partial human and demon blood.”
“But I thought you said Inu Yasha did not have children of his own.”
A slight smile crept onto the lord’s face. “Did I not say my father.”
A/N: If you want to know exactly how you get a Kenshin from a Sesshomaru, I will be posting that story soon. It's called (of all things) Origins.
