Part 5 - The Storm Begins

Inu Yasha sat with Miroku and a sleeping Yuki, waiting. They could hear Kagome’s cries from the other room but Sango had remained adamant that the men should stay out. Inu Yasha’s golden eyes darted from the door to the birthing room to Yuki. He was worried about Kagome, the smell of blood was very strong but he was also worried about Yuki. Kagome had brought some round things that she called sed-a-tives and told Inu Yasha to give them to her daughter when she went into labor. She had said they would keep Yuki quiet and so far she was. Inu Yasha got up and began to pace. Miroku, whose lap Yuki had her head on told him to sit down and relax.
“I can’t monk. Something isn’t right,” he relpied.
The sounds ceased in the other room and Sango opened the door, her eyes were brimming with tears, her hair matted by sweat. “Inu Yasha…I’m sorry,”
The hanyou was in front of her in an instant. “What’s wrong?” he asked, fighting the lump rising in his throat.
She wrung her hands, not looking at him. “There was so much blood…”
Inu Yasha grabbed Sango by the shoulders, “What happened?”
She still refused to meet his gaze. “We lost the baby.”
He felt like he’d been knocked into a frozen pond. Inu Yasha’s body went rigid as he asked his next question, “Kagome?”
“She…Inu Yasha, you’d better go see her.”
Inu Yasha went into the room and quietly approached the bed. Kagome lay there amidst bloody sheets, her skin as white as Yuki’s, her hand lay limp on the bed. He reached for it and gripped her cold fingers in his warm ones. “Kagome?”
She opened her eyes and looked at him, smiling weakly. “I’m sorry Inu Yasha…I wanted to give you a son…They said I shouldn’t”
He felt a growl rise in his throat, “Who told you that?”
“My doctors…my time…because of Yuki”
He brushed aside the thought that Naraku had once again caused him pain and brushed Kagome’s hair from her face. “I don’t care about that now…as long as you are allright—“
“I’m not,” her voice was becoming softer, “Inu Yasha, promise me.”
“Promise what?” Dread was knotting his stomach as he looked into Kagome’s blue eyes.
“That you will take care of Yuki,”
He held her hand tighter, he was trembling now. “Kagome, don’t leave me.”
“Promise me Inu Yasha,” she said again, as forcefully as he exhausted body would allow.
He bent his head, his lips brushing hers as he said, “I promise. I wont let anyone harm her,”
With that he kissed her, squeezing his eyes shut to keep the tears at bay as he felt her grip on his loosen. He broke the kiss and lay his head on the pillow next to hers, “Kagome…don’t leave me,” he whispered again, though he knew she was already gone.
He fought back the cry building in his throat, struggling to retain control, as he held her, rocking back and forth. Then he heard a startled yelp from outside the door and snarling. ‘Yuki.’ He knew he should go to her but he wanted a few moments more with his Kagome. He remembered the pain he felt at the loss of Kikyo but that was nothing compared to what he felt now. A part of him was gone. Finally the thought of his promise to her, he lay her gently back on the bed and with one last brush of fingers across her smooth skin, Inu Yasha left the birthing room.
Yuki was pacing back and forth, snarling at Miroku, who sat in the corner, bleeding from scratches on his cheek, with his hands folded before him in prayer. Inu Yasha could see the barrier the monk had erected around Yuki. Sango edged toward him, careful not to touch the barrier, lest she be shocked. She was also bleeding from a wound on her arm.
“Yuki smell blood! Yuki want blood,” she moved forward her hand touching the barrier. It crackled and she jumped back with a yelp and a snarl.
“She woke up and attacked us,” Sango said.
“I’m sorry Sango,” he said softly, “Miroku, you can put the barrier down.”
Miroku ceased his chanting and the barrier faded away. Yuki stepped up cautiously and when she met no resistance she bolted for the birthing room. Inu Yasha followed quickly after her, only to see her standing calmly beside the bed, reaching a hesitant hand to touch Kagome’s body. “Mother?” Her voice was not the same as it had been before.
Inu Yasha breathed a sigh of relief that the fit had passed so quickly. He went up to her, putting his hands on her shoulders. She looked up at him, confusion in her eyes. “Mother sleep?”
He swallowed hard. “Yes Yuki, mother sleep.”
“Wake up soon?” He could hear the tremble in her voice, she knew something wasn’t right.
He shook his head. “She’s not going to wake up.”
Understanding slowly crept into her face and tears filled her eyes. Inu Yasha lifted her in his arms, she buried her face in his haori and cried.

“When Kagome died, it was as if half of the force restraining our little Yuki’s power was gone. Inu Yasha came to us and asked for our help. Bringing the sweet Yuki out was as easy as brining out the Chi no Yuki. The hard part was catching her. For many years we were able to keep her from causing serious harm to anyone, including herself. But soon even we felt that our strength was not enough.”

“We have to find her before someone hurts her,” Inu Yasha said, his voice full of worry.
Kouga and Sesshomaru glanced at each other. The two youkai were not worried about anyone hurting Yuki. Both of them sported scars from their last encounter with the Chi no Yuki. The three raced across the sun dappled forest floor, their senses alert for any sign of Yuki. Kouga had the unfortunate pleasure to be the first to encounter her.
She dropped on him from above slamming him into the ground. He yelped and the others spun around to see Yuki leap back into the trees. Two pairs of golden eyes and one sapphire scanned the tree tops for the flash of black that meant she was about to attack. She went after Sesshomaru next. He barely avoided her razor sharp claws as she flew past him. This time she stayed on the ground, preparing for another attack. Kouga tackled her from behind. She rolled with him and managed to slip from his grasp, getting to her feet with lightening speed. With a smile she charged him. He managed to block her punch but did not see the kick that knocked him to the ground.
Inu Yasha tried to take her by surprise but she was ready for the inu hanyou, grabbing his arm and using his own momentum to slam him into a tree. Sesshomaru slipped behind her, taking a handful of her silver streaked raven hair in his hand and pulling her head back. She snarled with anger and twisted in his grasp, picking him up to throw him. Again Kouga attempted to tackle her, succeeding in taking her down. Sesshomaru landed lightly on his feet as Yuki lost her hold on him. Kouga rose to his feet, his arms wrapped around Yuki, pinning her deadly claws to her side. “Let Yuki go!”
Sesshomaru started to draw Toukijin. “No!!” Inu Yasha cried, just getting up from Yuki’s throw.
The Lord of the Western Lands turned to his half brother. “We must!”
“No, I promised Kagome!” he came over to them, standing toe to toe with Sesshomaru.
Meanwhile, Yuki struggled in Kouga’s grasp and the leader of the wolf youkai knew he wouldn’t be able to hold her much longer. “Inu Yasha!”
Sesshomaru and Inu Yasha glared at one another a few moments longer then Inu Yasha turned his attention to Yuki. He spoke in a soft voice, calling her name, telling her that Father was here. Sesshomaru watched, again amazed, as she first stopped struggling. Then the anger left her pretty face and finally the red faded from her eyes. She was once again the sweet and innocent Yuki. She asked where she was. Sesshomaru sighed. She never remembered what she had done during these fits. He wondered how much longer they could keep her from hurting any humans. The look in Kouga’s eyes told him that the wolf was wondering the same thing.

Kouga paused, staring into the fire. Kenshin waited patiently for him to begin once again. Inwardly he was thinking that there was something familiar about this transformation Yuki went through. He felt that Sesshomaru was looking at him and looked at him to see the golden eyes were indeed on the swordsman. They seemed to be staring into his soul. Before he could say anything though, Kouga began to speak again.
“We carried on like that for many years. More than a human’s life span. It was exhausting but we could handle it. She only transformed when she had been hurt or sensed blood in anyway and we all loved her very much. It seemed a small price to pay for the Yuki we adored. Soon though it seemed like nothing triggered her transformation and that they cam more frequently. We always managed to keep her from the villages and towns, that were spreading like wildfire. But one day she did get away from us. She killed thirty people before we were able to catch her. Sesshomaru and I met in secret. We knew it would be hard to convince Inu Yasha but there was no other way.”

Inu Yasha held her as she slept quietly against his chest, her fingers tangled in his hair. The night wind gently rocked the branches of the tree they sat in. He sighed, looking up at the night sky. ‘Kagome, I miss you,’ he thought. Yuki stirred in his arms but did not wake, just snuggled deeper into his haori. He brushed her silky hair from her face and she began to purr. He chuckled. If only she was always like this, he mused. He wished he could sleep but if he fell asleep and Yuki woke…he shook his head, not wanting to think what could happen. His nose told him that his brother was coming long before he saw him. Sesshomaru settled in a branch slightly above Inu Yasha and Yuki. “Hello, Sess,” he said without looking up, and wondering where his brother had been. Either Kouga or Sesshomaru was by his side constantly these days.
“You don’t look well brother.”
After a long pause, in which the only sound was the chirpring of crickets and the rustle of the leaves, Inu Yasha finally looked up at Sesshomaru with sad golden eyes. “It’s getting harder Sesshomaru.”
The aristocratic youkai merely nodded. She was becoming stronger by the day, despite the fact that she was hanyou. Sesshomaru hated to admit it but she was even surpassing him in her strength and speed. The Yuki that slept so peacefully on his brother’s chest remained ever the same, innocent and harmless. Sesshomaru sighed as he looked at the haggard face of his brother. At one time he might have scoffed at Inu Yasha for making and keeping such a promise to a human but now he understood that love can do strange things to a man, whether he be ningen, hanyou, or even youkai. He held out his arms toward Inu Yasha. “Give her to me. You should sleep.”
Inu Yasha stared at Sesshomaru a moment, then looked at Yuki. He sighed again, nodding. He was tired, maybe just for a few hours, she would be allright. Yuki’s eyes opened as she was passed to the Lord of the Western Lands. She yawned, rubbing her eyes with her fists. “Father?”
“Father is going to get some sleep Yuki, may I hold you for awhile?” Sesshomaru asked, as he settled into a more comfortable position.
Her response was to turn her face into his kimono, grabbing a fistful of the silky material and fall back asleep. “Go to sleep Inu Yasha.”
Inu Yasha yawned widely, stretching the kinks from his back. “Thank you brother.”
Sometime before dawn, Yuki’s eyes flashed open and her grip on his kimono tightened, startling Sesshomaru. He looked down at the girl, who looked back up at him the tell tale red glimmering in her eyes. He tried to keep his hold on her but she slipped out of his grasp, knocking him to the ground. Inu Yasha awoke with a start, hearing his brother crashing through the tree. “Sess?”
Sesshomaru wasted no time on words, just started running in the direction his nose told him Yuki had gone. Soon Inu Yasha was running next to him. “It’s my fault,”
“It would have happened whether or not you had rested, Inu Yasha. There is no way to control her anymore.”
“There she is.”
They caught the flicker of black as Yuki streaked through the trees ahead of them. ‘We shouldn’t have caught up to her this fast,’ Inu Yasha thought. “She’s trying to lead us into a trap.”
When they reached the clearing there was no sign of Yuki. Suddenly she burst from the underbrush, hitting Sesshomaru from the side, knocking him to the ground and in one smooth motion attacked Inu Yasha. Her hands circled his throat as they fell to the ground. Gasping for breath he struggled to fight her off. With Sesshomaru’s help he was able to finally prying lose Yuki’s hands, He flipped her over so that now he was on top, holding her hands above her head.
“Let Yuki go!”
He calmly held her down, speaking softly to her, calling her name, telling her that Father was here as he waited for the rage to pass. Finally she quieted, blinking up at him with wide eyes. “Why Father sit on Yuki?”
Inu Yasha breathed a sigh of relief as he rolled off of Yuki, sitting beside her. “It was a game Yuki.”
“Oh,” she replied, then she saw Sesshomaru, “Uncle come to see Yuki?”
Sesshomaru gave the girl a small smile. “Yes, Yuki, I came to see you.”
She climbed to her feet, hugging Sesshomaru around the waist. Sesshomaru patted her head, looking at Inu Yasha, who sat on the ground with a defeated look on his face. “Let us go to Kouga’s. We need to speak.”
Inu Yasha nodded as Yuki flopped in his lap, throwing her slender arms around his neck. “Would you like that Yuki?”
“Yuki want to see Wolf Uncle,” she responded happily.
The sun came up in a blaze of fire and as its rays touched them, Sesshomaru watched as Yuki’s claws shortened and her hair turned the color of liquid silver. He could see the relief in his brother’s eyes as he stood up, putting Yuki on his shoulders, so that her long legs dangled on either side of his neck and she played with his furry ears, making them twitch. “I almost forgot,” Inu Yasha said, heading off in the direction of Koga’s cave, “This is her day.”
“Yes Yuki’s day,” she echoed, in that satiny voice of hers that could melt any heart.
They walked in silence, except for Yuki’s giggles of happiness and occasional bursts of humming. Both brothers were lost in their own thoughts. Sesshomaru wasn’t sure how to broach the subject that he wished to discuss once Kouga was with them.

They left Yuki in the care of Kouga’s wolves, knowing that she was no danger to anyone today and went to the river to talk. Sesshomaru was the first to speak. “Inu Yasha, something must be done. The villagers are searching for her.”
He sighed, sitting on a boulder and fingering the rosary around his neck. “I know but…”
Kouga put a hand on Inu Yasha’s shoulder. “We can’t control her. You know what must be done.”
Inu Yasha just nodded, looking off into the distance.
Kouga looked at Sesshomaru, who indicated that they should leave Inu Yasha to his thoughts.
