Chapter One

Dark Sapphire eyes stared out into the inky darkness of the night, slowly becoming filled with hot tears. Every time that she thought about her friends in the feudal era, she couldn’t help but cry or withdraw within herself.

The lanterns glowed eerily in the dark, casting a yellow-orange glow across the small buildings and cobblestone streets. Lost in her thoughts, Kagome walked almost blindly down the dimly lit Rome streets, the chilling wind blowing into her eyes.

Blinded by this, she stumbled and gasped softly as she felt strong arms wrap around her. She had no idea that she ran into anyone, but she was grateful that someone had caught her from a bad fall. “Gomen…” She said softly and looked up, and as she caught a glimpse of his features. Her eyes widened considerably and she gasped loudly. “Sesshoumaru? No…You’re not Sesshoumaru.” She studied his eyes and his clothes and she gasped in realization. “I’m so sorry father!” She said breathlessly, as she tried to stand upright again.

Steadying her upright, Abel found that Kagome was dazed. “Miss?…Miss? Are you alright?” She jumped slightly and nodded. “Hai, arigato Father…” Abel smiled a bit goofily. My name is Abel Nightroad. And yours is?” Kagome grinned back at him. “Kagome Higurashi. Pleased to meet you Father Nightroad.”

The large grandfather clock that was in the store behind them rang nine o clock, and Kagome sighed softly. “Kuso… I still don’t know where I’m going to stay…” Abel’s head shot up at this and he smiled. “I have the perfect place for you to stay Kagome-san!” Kagome looked at him with a puzzled glance. “Where?” Leading her to a brightly lit hotel, he said jubilantly, “This is one of the many hotels that the Cardinal Caterina Sforza has visited many times. I’m sure that they wouldn’t object to another person staying.” Kagome nodded and walked in with him.

The receptionist that was at the front counter smiled widely as she saw Abel. “Hello Father Nightroad.” Abel nodded and smiled back at her. “Hello Michelle-san. Can Kagome-san get the room next to mine?” Michelle’s lips tilted into a small smile and she nodded. Grabbing a brass key from a hook, she handed it to Kagome. “Here you are.”

Leading Kagome up the flights of stairs, Abel smiled at her reaction to the lavish décor. “It’s quite beautiful, isn’t it?” Kagome nodded. “Indeed it is.” The silver haired priest opened the ornate door that led to Kagome’s room and ushered her in. “Here you are Kagome-san. If you need anything, I‘m next door.” His blue eyes twinkled mischievously as they locked with hers one last time and he smiled as he retreated to his room.

“It’s so quiet…” Kagome murmured as she placed her bags in the corner of the room, opening one of them. “Aaah…It’s perfect.” She had found her blue and black miko hakamas and haori, and put them on. She felt the most comfortable in them, but she didn’t travel out of Japan in them. Grabbing her quiver and longbow, she exited her room and hesitated when she got to Abel’s. Briefly knocking, she was greeted by his surprised face, and a small smile. “Kagome-san…what’s the matter?” She shook her head. “Nothing’s the matter Father, it’s just that I was wondering if you knew where the archery ranges were. I wanted to practice for a while. I didn’t want to get rusty on my trip.”

Abel nodded softly. “Hai Kagome-san, I know where they are. Do you mind if I watch?” Kagome smiled at that. It had been awhile since someone wanted to see her archery. She had become quite good since her time in the feudal era. “Hai father. I don’t mind.” Abel chuckled. “Good. Let’s go then.”

As she was led out to the back of the lavish hotel, Abel couldn’t help but to steal a quick glance at Kagome. She’s hiding something…but what?

“Its pretty quiet here.” Kagome said as she fired her first arrow from one hundred feet away. Abel’s eyes widened as he saw that it hit dead center. “You are quite good Kagome-san. Most archers would have to step closer to their target.” Kagome smiled at that. “I’m more used to a moving target.”

He stared at her quizzically. “Moving targets? Were you a hunter?” Kagome gave a small laugh at his question and released another arrow with precise precision. “That’s a good question. It really bordered on the monotonous side, but I was a bit of a hunter in some respect.”

She doesn’t want to say exactly what she hunted…and if she was a hunter at all. Who is this girl exactly? He was snapped out of his musings by the sharp twang of Kagome’s bow. Blinking, he stared in amazement at how the arrowhead split the first one.

When they were amicably talking, she noticed that it wasn’t windy at all. But now, the whole forest seemed to go silent, and a rustling above them was heard in the trees. She knew to be cautious, especially with everything that happened in the feudal era. “Who’s there! Show Yourself!” The rustling in the trees increased, and Abel looked at her in confusion. “Kagome-san, what do you mean? No one’s there.” She shook her head. “Someone’s there…something…I can sense it.”

A blond haired man jumped down with a flourish that Kagome knew that only a youkai should possess. What is he? Glaring at her, his voice took a deadly, hateful tone to it as it wrapped around every single word. “Lowly terran…how is it that you sensed my presence?” Kagome grinned at his agitation. This man, he reminded her somewhat of Sesshoumaru in their first meetings, but he barely had anything in common with him. Abel on the other hand…he really reminds me of Sesshou…Damnit! There’s a possible youkai running amuck and all I can think of Is him? “If you really want to know, you were making so much noise that you’d have to be deaf to find you.” She stated with a smirk. She could see that he wasn’t happy about what she had just said and he grinned evilly at her. “Terran…you’re treading on low grounds.” Kagome chuckled. “No, it’s just you that doesn’t know where to go!” She gripped her bow tightly and knocked and arrow. “Youkai, if you really wish to live, leave this place.”

“Youkai? You have everything all wrong girl I am no youkai. I am a Methuselah. A vampire.”

Abel stepped in front of Kagome, pulling out his pistol slowly. “As Kagome-san said, leave this place. You are unwelcome here.” His eyes flashed silver for a split second and Kagome almost shivered at his tone.

“You just made a bad move father!” the Methuselah hissed and launched himself at Abel, claws extended. “Abel, duck!” Kagome shouted. When he was safely on the ground, she released her arrow which was laced with purification. “Well, that vampire is dust.” remarked Kagome. Abel slowly got up and dusted himself off. Glancing at her both amazed and confused at the same time, Kagome chuckled at the range of emotions that flitted across his face. “Kagome-san, how did you destroy that vampire with one arrow? And if I may ask, what was that pink aura that surrounded it?”

Kagome blanched at Abel’s comments. Should I tell him? I don’t sense any ill will from him…Hai, I shall tell him, and I want to know some things in return. “I will answer some of your questions and you will answer some of mine. Is that agreeable?”

Gone from his face was the serene, happy look, and now what was set there was a serious composure. “Hai Kagome-san.”

Gently tugging on his gloved hand, she led him back inside. “I don’t want everyone to know everything…not yet…Its too early…” She mumbled to herself. Unbeknownst to her, Abel heard what she mumbled and cast her a quick, questioning glance. Don’t want anyone else to know what I wonder…

Stopping when Kagome did to wait for her to open her door, both of them stepped inside. Closing it, Kagome sat down on her bed, and Abel sat down next to her. “Do you know anything about Japanese culture?” Abel nodded his head slightly. “Well, do you know anything about monks and priestesses?” He nodded again, this time slower. “Just a bit…I haven’t heard a lot about them. Why?” Sighing, she began her explanation. Telling him that she was a miko and she had extreme holy powers. So they still do exist…Kagome stared at Abel with longing, she wanted to tell him about everything that happened in the feudal era just to get it off of her chest. “Why do vampires roam the streets in Rome?”

“There were a group of humans, just like us that were infected by a virus that made them drink human blood. Their cravings increased and they created a whole society of Methuselah.” He ran his hand through his silver hair and sighed softly. His stomach was rumbling softly in hunger, but not noticeable to anyone else.
That aura…it was purification? “The last real priestesses were to be reported in the feudal era of Japan. Is there some way that you got there or got your hands on an artifact?”

Kagome sighed. “Well, you surely are a smart one Father Abel.” She said laughing. Abel was deeply interested now. “What was it like?” At that simple question, all of her pent up feelings and memories were told in a story of lies, danger, love, tragedy, and hope.

Her voice was tight, and thick with emotion as she started to tell him what happened with their final battle with Naraku. “Naraku was a conniving bastard…sniff…he used any means necessary to get what he wanted.” She began to cry softly as she remembered exactly how her beloved sister Sango, and her little brother Kohaku were slain cruelly before her eyes. “Sango…Kohaku…” she sobbed sadly.

Abel’s eyes softened and he embraced her as she fell against him in sadness. Burying her head into his shoulder, she sighed softly as he rested his head on top of her crown of raven black hair. Gently rubbing her back, he whispered softly to her, hoping that she would stop crying. In her grief, she grasped the folds of his shirt tightly.

As she calmed down, she slowly glanced up at him and smiled shakily. “Thank you. I haven’t told anyone this.” She nestled herself back into his embrace and sighed softly in contentment. It had been a long time since someone had held her and it felt good to be in a friendly embrace. “Sesshou…“ She murmured almost inaudibly, and snuggled closer to him, wanting to get more of the warmth radiating from him. Abel’s face flushed in embarrassment. He really didn’t want to move from his spot, and let Kagome lie against him as she continued to cry.

The lights dimmed, then went out completely. “A power outage?” Abel shook his head. There has to be something more to this.

Terrified screams were heard until they were silenced forever. Kagome’s sapphire eyes locked onto Abel’s crystal blue one. “Methuselah. It’s the only explanation.” Both of them stated in unison.

Slowly getting up, she turned to Abel. “I’m going to make sure they’re alright!” He stood up quickly, but nodded in agreement as well. “We’ll go together Kagome-san. I won’t let anything happen to you.” That struck a chord in her. Both Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru had said the same thing in their own ways, and between the Inuyoukai brothers; the younger was killed saving herself, and the older was wounded badly.

Slowly, the duo opened Kagome’s door; and as they did, Kagome stared at the carnage and blood around her with both disgust and hope that at least someone was alive. She also wanted to skin this Methuselah alive as well.

The strewn bodies and crushed skulls of people were crudely thrown across the halls, blood was splattered against the glass and carpet, and one final scream was heard as they continued their search.

“This is horrible! No person should be treated like this!” She clasped her hands tightly around her bow and said a prayer for the souls of the cruelly slain. A bright blue hue surrounded the strewn figures and she smiled as she saw that their souls departed peacefully.

Violet eyes glittered angrily as they stared at the priest and priestess. “Terrans intruding on my fun…They will pay!”

A body landed in front of Abel and Kagome, causing both of them to look up. A pale, lithe woman with long black hair and shocking violet eyes stepped out of the shadows. “So…you’ve arrived.” She drawled out slowly.

Kagome glared hatefully at the vampress, she could see the vibrant, rich blood of the victims carelessly dribbling out of her mouth. Slowly loosing control of herself, she gripped Abel’s hand tightly and faced the vampress with a calm, icy composure.

“Why are you destroying every human life in this hotel that you can get your hands on?” Kagome asked angrily. The dark haired Methuselah laughed cruelly. “Why, you’re an inquisitive one…I’m doing this for the sport of it, and to satisfy my hunger terran…” Kagome’s sapphire eyes turned stormy blue in her rage. Her hand shaking violently, she almost yelled at one of the citizens of the Methuselah Empire. Abel gripped her hand tightly in reassurance, and as she stared at the haughty vampress, her lips turned into a sneer. “You are a total disgrace of your kind. Destroying lives just because you think that it would benefit your own race…It’s disgusting!”

Disgusting? Terran, you know nothing of our kind!” She hissed, her eyes taking a slight reddish tint to them. Her ire was rising, and she lifted one hand menacingly in front of her. A thin, long blade quickly slid out of the back of her hand. With a great burst of speed that was only known to be of the vampire kind, she appeared behind Kagome, knocking Abel away from her with a sharp backhand. Kagome cursed to herself, she knew that she shouldn’t have let this damned vampire sneak up on her.

Struggling in her captor’s grip, Kagome stared at Abel’s prone form. “Abel!” She all but shouted, watching as he stirred on the ground.

“Kagome-san…” Came the soft reply of Abel as he stood, his face set into a serious deposition as he looked at the scene before him.

“Let her go.” Abel’s voice was as cold as ice and devoid of any emotion. The vampiress flashed her fangs in anger towards the priest, and a smirk crept across her lips. Pressing the blade lightly into her neck, a chuckle escaped fanged lips at the way Kagome’s rich blood slid down her pale neck. Not wanting to show that she was in pain, all that Kagome did was wince.

Both Kagome and Abel were in a precarious situation. It seemed that Kagome couldn’t use her miko powers to destroy the vampiress that was holding her hostage, but he knew that he couldn’t’ let anything happen to her. His eyes, like frozen blue chipped topazes, glittered with an unknown emotion. The only other way that he could get both of them out of the hotel safely was that. “Nanomachine Crusnik 02. Limited activation approved. Power at 40.”

Kagome and Sesshoumaru were mates to be, It's only natural that she has sought comfort in another, no matter who it was. Sad grin That might be a problem later on, but sadly, Sesshou won't make it.
