A MATTER OF THE SOUL
Chapter 7
The three ex spirit detectives walked silently, all lost in their own thoughts.
Yusuke glanced at the directions, slightly faded from running his fingers over it so frequently in the past. She'd given him directions and the phone number to her new house before she had moved. He wondered if she ever thought about him. Was she dating someone new? Was she happy? God, he was going to drive himself insane. He needed to stop thinking about her. He still loved her, but it would never be the same for them, even if they tried again. He would always know that he could never truly make her happy. He shook his head in frustration.
Kurama watched Yusuke. He understood to a degree how hard it was for him. Wanting Keiko, but knowing they simply could never work. They could try, sure, but it was destined to fail. He himself had similar problems. He could never date a normal woman. He was 19 now, and he had yet to really hold a relationship. Sure, there were occasional girls. They'd go out to eat, maybe see a movie, then they'd go to a motel for the night. He really didn't have many issues with one-night stands. He was a youkai so he couldn't get any kind of disease, not that his standard ever dropped that low in a girl, and he could control fertility. No accidents. No strings attached. They understood it too, so no broken hearts. He wished he could find a girl that he could be honest with. Completely honest. But in Ningenkai, the possibility of that was slim to none. If he told a girl that he shared a body with a kitsune soul, they would think that he was insane. He sighed audibly.
Kuwabara, like the other two, was carefully thinking over his own situation. He had been planning on finishing up high school and then going to college and becoming a veterinarian. But now that he was taking Koenma's old job, what was that leaving him with. He and Yukina were friends, but now that he'd grown up, he realized the ice maiden was just kind hearted and had no ulterior motives for them. He'd dated a few girls, but none of them were really his type. They only worried about what they looked like, what they wore, who was cool, and stuff that he had no interest in. They cringed at the thought of carrying their own shopping bags. They were thin, but only from dieting, not work. He just wanted… more in a girl.
So lost in his own musings, Yusuke, at the head of the group, tripped. Catching himself with his hands before his face hit the ground, he glared at the cause of his clumsiness. Kurama was kneeling next to him, examining the deep rivulets in the concrete. Kuwabara was scanning the immediate area. Sitting back on his feet, Yusuke let his aura slide through the air. He pulled it back into himself when the lingering bits of foreign youki and holy energy attacked his own.
Kurama was now running his hand over the dead grass. Kuwabara held out a hand to Yusuke and pulled him up. Looking around, taking in all the damage, Yusuke said to Kurama, “The leftover energy in the area is pretty hostile.”
Kurama nodded. He stood and made his way to one of the trees. He was confused as to why the trees all seemed bursting with life in the middle of fall, while the grass was dead and decayed. Placing a hand to the bark, he received an answer from the tree itself. `Cannot restore energy to what is dead.'
Yoko, who had been sleeping, was awakened by the surge of energy from the tree. ^Hey Red, what's going…that's impossible…^ Kurama had a mental image of the kitsune's tails bristling, every hair standing on end. ^Kurama there's miko ki in the air. There haven't been any miko that powerful for almost 500 years. Can't you feel the way it's purifying all the youki in the area? She's already gotten one youkai, I don'twant to be next.^
Kurama had heard legends of mikos. They were holy priestesses that were said to hate all youkai and would purify them on the spot. Letting his senses drift outward, he was assaulted by the holy energy, like fire licking at his body. Pushing outward, he found the source of the energy a bit farther away accompanied by two very powerful, and slightly familiar, youkai.
=I think I found your miko, Yoko. She's with two youkai. They don'tfeel conflicted or strained like they're fighting. I don'tknow what's going on.=
“We need to hurry.” Kurama turned to the other two with his eyes sprinkled with gold. Then he sprinted towards the retreating auras, the other two of his group following without a word. As they got closer to the auras, they began to feel the presence of at least five low level youkai and another miko. What the hell was going on?
