A MATTER OF THE SOUL

Chapter 10

*a small note from the writer… alright… as stated previously. Yes I'm reading Laurell K. Hamilton. I think she is a brilliant woman. This story is not a crossover with any of her books. This is a YYH x IY crossover. There will be no vampires or wereanimals, besides possible mention. Only demons and the like. Succubae & Incubi are mythological demons, found in almost any culture. They are men/women who steal the soul of a person after convincing them to have sex, or something of that nature. Or the even creepier Arabic version in which the female demon's vagina has teeth… you can only imagine… Thank you. Crystal_Flame *

As soon as Kagome touched the handle, she pulled open the door, afraid that she might lose her nerve. The music was loud and blaring. Typical for heavy rock. The band wasn't bad, but they also weren't amazing, either. She watched, slightly stunned from the immediate blaring of music. There was an announcement made that the band was taking a 10-minute break. Said band stumbled off stage and Kagome realized that not one of them was sober.

Looking around at all of the people, who had previously been dancing, she realized that she had more clothing on than anyone there. Also, that she appeared to be the only one not drunk or on their way there. There were men and women of all ages and cliches.

Hidden in the dark in a corner booth near the bathroom she had just exited was a teenaged looking girl with a man who was obviously a lot older than her. The girl was small and petite, seeming to have the body of a 13-year-old. She could only see the back of the girl, for she was straddling the man's legs. A black tank top that showed the curve of her lower back and a black and red plaid skirt that was pushed so high Kagome couldn't tell how long it was, covered the girl's delicate porcelain body. Her hair was in waist length pigtails, adding to the “sweet little girl” look. It was pitch black, but had a natural sheen to it that said it was her natural color. The tips, however, had been dyed a bright red. Her hair was almost perfectly straight, except for a few curls in the end of each pigtail.

The man's hands were on the girl's hips, grinding her against him. He was broad and obviously well built. From what she could see around the girl, he had on black dress slacks and an untucked, white, button-down silk shirt. The slight shine of the shirt had distracted her from his face. His head was bent down, his mouth to the girl's neck. His hair was messy and shot out in random spikes. It was a rich burgundy color. He opened his green eyes and watched Kagome. They were hard eyes, eyes that had seen horrible things, that belonged to a person who had done horrible things and maybe held regret. They reminded her of bottle glass. That dark murky green color. She looked away first.

Gathering her wits a bit closer, she scanned the human sea with her aura, and recoiled at the shear number of youkai here. Sixty, maybe more, percent of the people dancing, drinking, doing not so decent things were full-blooded youkai. She received many backward glances, including the man and girl she had been surveying earlier. They all seemed a bit shocked, but too drunk to really care. The man was watching her wearily now, hiding more of his body behind the girl in his lap. He whispered something to her and the miniscule nod she gave, was given away by the bob of her pigtails.

Kagome stepped further into the room. She could see the exit, just barely, at the far side of the room. There was a bar along one wall, starting at the front entrance not ending till it hit the wall, Kagome wondered how the bartender got in and out, then there were booths along the next wall, the one closest to the bar having its back to the bartender. Behind her, there was a small hallway that led to the bathrooms and a back door. In the corner opposite the bar and booths, stood the stage, a raised rectangular platform. In total, the place wasn't huge, but it wasn't tiny, crowded however, maybe. She put it being crowded off on the fact that there were just a lot of people here. It must be popular.

The whole place was done in black, silver, and shades of green. The walls had a green mosaic type pattern from the middle down and above it was black paint. The tiles were all different shades of green and fit together at odd angles. The floor was smooth black cement. The six bar stools were steel and black leather, as were the four booths.

Kagome realized the band was playing again. This time it was Nickelback, “Do This Anymore”.

“Left on an east bound train.
Gone first thing this morning.
Why's what's best for you,
Always the worst thing for me?”

Kagome began to sway with the music. It made her think about her own relationship problems. Even though she and Inuyasha were still best friends, her heart was pretty used up. The way he had always gone behind her back to see Kikyo.

“Well no I don't find faith in your forced feelings
Not fooled by your misleadings
Won't buy this line you're selling
Tired of this lie you're telling…”

He always kept her dangling. He'd give her a little kindness for her to hold onto, then turn around and be cruel. She thought he had loved her, at least a little bit. She knew now that he hadn't, not really.

Kagome hadn't noticed the closeness of the people around her. There were bodies dancing in time with hers, she could feel it, a subconscious thread of control over the people around her. She could feel the potential. Like tenseness in a bar full of drunken bikers that were just looking for a fight, holding a potential for violence. This was a different kind of potential though, this was something that she could gain energy from. Lust. She fed that potential like stroking embers to full blaring life. Suddenly bodies were groping, kissing, grinding against each other. She could feel that energy rising, trapped in the building with no where to go. She pulled it, soaking it up like a sponge to water. She felt her own power skyrocket. Shoving it down quickly, hiding it, she walked to an empty booth, the one right next to the bar, and sat down. She felt amazing. Energized. Laying her head down, she allowed herself to bask in the afterglow.

She hadn't noticed when the band was no longer playing, but she did happen to overhear the conversation going on from a few feet away between the band and what she assumed was the manager of the club.

The manager was decently tall and broad in the shoulders. He had short black hair and beady black eyes. He was wearing a plain black jacket over a white tank top and blue jeans. His voice was loud and firm, leaving no room for argument, though the band persisted.

“You gotta start paying us more.” The lead singer said, his voice slightly slurred.

The manager glared at them and shook his head. “I'm already paying you guys $500 every two weeks. If you didn't go out and blow it on booze and drugs then you'd have money to pay your bills!”

What had been the drummer, threw his cigarette on the floor, and said, “What the fuck ever. I quit.” before walking out.

Kagome's mind was working furiously. This is exactly what she'd been needing. She might be able to pay for a little place with 500 bucks every two weeks. She could sing, she could dance, that wasn't a problem. But if her school found out then they would expel her for sure. A small nudge from Naraku gave her the answer. Only one way to find out. Drawing out Naraku's youki, she transformed her body. Running to the bathroom while the manager was still arguing with the remaining band members, she looked herself over in the mirror, changing details here and there. When she was finished, she smiled. It was perfect. With this new image came words like sex and lust. She had curves that looked like it had come straight from a goddess. Rounded hips, large firm breasts, toned legs, long inky black hair, blood red eyes framed by thick lashes. She allowed herself this one moment to be vain, basking in how gorgeous she knew she looked right now.

She walked back out and questioned the bartender on the whereabouts of the manager. She noticed that her voice was a little huskier. The voice most people save for bedroom talk. Pulling out a walkie-talkie he radioed the manager, who hurried from behind a curtain against the back wall on the stage.

In a huff he looked at the bar keep. “This better be important. I'm in the middle of trying to find a last minute replacement.”

Kagome cleared her throat and watched the man's face as he scanned her over. “I'm looking for a job. I heard you needed a new entertainer.”

He looked at her a minute before saying “I'm sorry, but I'm not looking for that kind of entertainment.”

Kagome chuckled, and felt the effect it had on the two men near her. “I mean only to sing.”

The manager shook himself. “Alright. Go back stage and tell them you're going to audition. Pick the song you want to do, they'll take care of everything. You just sing. If you perform well tonight, consider yourself hired.”

Kagome was rushed back stage, dressed more appropriate, which meant less clothing. Red halter-top with black pants. They pulled her long black hair into a high ponytail that swayed with the tiniest of movement. They put powder and red lip-gloss on her and after questioning her musical selection, sent her on stage. She looked at the crowd that was watching her every motion, before grabbing the microphone.

“You wanna know more, more, more about me
I'm the girl who's kickin' the Coke machine
I'm the one that's honkin' at you cause I left late again

Hey, hey, hey
Could you see I want you
By the way I push you away
Yeah
Don't judge me tomorrow
By the way I'm actin' today
Mix the words up with the actions
Do it all for your reactions, yeah
Hey, hey,
Get tangled up in me…”

That night Kagome walked back home, deciding against the shadow travel, with a smile on her red painted lips, $150 in her pocket, and a job at the club every night from 6 to 11. While she had been in the area she stopped and looked at apartments nearby. She had found one and made a deal with the land lady to make the first payment in two weeks when she got paid.

Life was going good.
