A MATTER OF THE SOUL

Chapter 11

Kagome smiled, pleased with herself. All the stuff was packed, perfectly organized, and the boxes were even labeled. All her stuff together in 30 minutes. She laughed inside her head, it took her longer to just clean her room usually. She looked at her empty room and her smile faded around the edges. `So many memories…' Kagome thought sadly.

|But now is your time to spread your wings. Set off on your own. You'll make memories everywhere that you go. |

+ I know… but it's been my home for so long… + she sighed audibly.

Ryo stood in the doorway watching her. She was gorgeous basked in the wintry sunlight, but he'd seen his fair share of beauty in his days and thus was unmoved. No. What drew him to her so strongly was her force of will and strength. He held affection for her, but he didn't love her, yet he had to have her. He cleared his throat, causing Kagome to spin around. Clearly he had surprised her.

Kagome watched him, from a safe distance, but felt the emptiness of the room more now than ever. Just the two of them, alone. Like watching a tiger at the zoo and then suddenly the bars disappear. She felt trapped, but forced a smile on her lips.

“Hi Ryo. Thank you again for helping us get packed and move. How could I repay you?” As the words left her mouth she regretted it. She found herself flush against the wall with Ryo hungrily eating at her mouth. She could taste his want, like sweet candy begging her to try it. So she did. She pulled his lust to the surface, which in turn brought out her own.

It left both parties panting and groaning against each other. Ryo pulled her toward him and they both fell to the floor. With Kagome on her back, Ryo took advantage of the position. He loomed over her figure, sunset eyes glazed and out of focus, his hair was a mass of silver and black. His hand worked at her body underneath the grey sweater, leaving shallow claw marks.

Kagome's mind was hazy. She squirmed from his ministrations, his claws leaving her dangling on that fine line between pleasure and pain. Ryo's mouth latched onto her ribcage, just below her breast, causing her to mewl. The sound made him look up. He let out a shuddering breath from the look in her eyes. They were flickering between red and blue, stopping to swirl as purple, and then beginning the dance again.

The downstairs front door being closed brought Kagome out of her haze. Glancing at her open bedroom door, she lightly pushed at Ryo's shoulders. Her smirked, but didn't budge.

“Ryo, get off of me. Everybody is right downstairs.” She whispered, in case there happened to be any youkai upstairs.

“So?”

SO?! Had he really? Well she'd show him. Kagome returned his smirk, flashing a bit of fang, before pulling her knees up with her feet resting flat on his chest. She pushed hard once and he flew back a few feet. Kagome stood and dusted off her jeans and righted her sweater.

“I have to finish packing. If you could bring those boxes downstairs and put them into the truck,” she paused for effect, then lowered her voice to a sultry tone, “I would be very grateful.”

No more was said between the two of them. One contemplating the innuendo left by the other, who was simply too embarrassed by the whole event to face the first party. Six decent sized boxes were piled into the back of a rented moving truck along with her old bed, desk, dresser, and bookshelf, a television with a built in DVD player, courtesy of her mother, and a large couch that was a housewarming gift from one of her mother's friends. Kagome's mother came with to inspect Kagome's new and first apartment. The driver, Kirara, and Kagome's mother were the only passengers in the truck. Kagome, Sango, Kikyo, Shippo, Rin, and Kanna were piled in one cab, following directly behind the truck. Behind the first cab was a second one, holding Ryo, Inuyasha, Miroku, Kouga, and Souta.

It had been decided due to the size of the apartment and the high risk of burglars, that anything expensive, or great personal value, or to large to be used appropriately anyway, would be left at the shrine in the safety of their basement. The list of these items included Hiraikotsu, the beautiful matching silk kimonos given to Kikyo, Sango, and Kagome, Sango's slayer gear, bows and arrows, jeweled daggers, and swords. The weapons taken were Sango's throwing knives and stars, her short sword, Miroku's staff, the Tetsaiga, Kagome's sword, and of course the jewel that hung from her neck.

The parade of vehicles traveled into a less credible part of the Tokyo area, where the buildings were beginning to crumble due to lack of upkeep. There were boards across windows and doorways of less stable buildings. There were people standing about, looking less than suspicious. Your everyday thugs. The truck pulled into the parking zone and the cabs let out their passengers and, after being paid, left. The building was tall, with six stories. There were seven apartments on each level, excluding the first, which held the attendant's office, public bathrooms, and the building owner's apartment. Kagome went in first, leaving everyone else to begin unloading the truck, as it was rented by the hour.

The carpet was red in the lobby and the walls had ornate gold patterned wallpaper. To the far right was the elevator and stairs. She went to the front desk, which housed behind it, the door to the landlady's apartment. The woman was a youkai, which is one of the first reasons for their living here. Although Kagome couldn't tell her exact type, she was definitely mammal, not reptile or bird. The woman, Nagumi Shiro, was sitting at the desk with a guarded expression. She was tall and slender. She was pretty, but didn't hold any of the otherworldly beauty that many youkai did. Her hair was auburn and cut shoulder length. Her eyes were a dark emerald. Her appearance seemed vaguely familiar, but Kagome pushed the thought aside and greeted the woman.

“Hello Ms. Shiro. My friends and I are here.”

“yes I see that…” Nagumi's eyes shifted to the right and left before continuing. “Ms. Higurashi… I understood that you were bring youkai to live here, but I wasn't aware of how strong they were… I must have your word that they'll start no trouble… I like it here in Ningenkai, I would really not like to be sent back to Makai. You understand of course.”

Kagome nodded. “ Yes, I'm sorry, I should have warned you beforehand, but they'll cause no trouble, we have permission for all of them to be here.”

Nagumi's eyes widened. “And how did you get that? The Reikai is in turmoil.”

Kagome smiled to herself. “A certain course of events sort of made it happen. Also I owe much thanks to a dear friend of mine.”

Nagumi nodded, eyes still watching for humans. Her hand searched under the desk for a minute before bringing out three keys on a ring. “Here are your keys, you may need to have more made. Your room is on the sixth floor, room number thirty-two. I hope you enjoy your stay here. If you find yourself with any maintenance problems just call the attendant, his office is to your right. Also, there is a laundry mat in the basement, along with snack and drink machines. The elevator doesn't go into the basement, as it was discovered after the elevator was installed, so you'll have to take the stairs. If there's anything else that you need or would like to know, my number should be in the booklet in your apartment, along with the number to the maintenance office, and all others staying here.” That part had obviously been said enough times to have become a speech, but the next was not. “Please don't bring any youkai drama into the lobby or halls. We do have ningen here as well. Have a nice day.”

“You too.” Kagome took the keys and went back outside. Kagome's mother was ushering the children out of the way. Sango, Kikyo, and Miroku were carrying the couch, one person on each end, one in the middle. Ryo and Kouga had the desk, Souta had the TV, and Inuyasha was waiting for her to help with the desk. It wasn't that the objects were too heavy for the demons, they were just too big and too hard to balance. Kagome went and lifted the other end of the desk one handed. She motioned everyone to go in. Wanting the kids out of the cold, she called for them to go in first and ordered Kirara to watch them. Kagome's mother called as they were entering the building, that she would stay and watch the boxes and remaining furniture. They went up the stairs, located the apartment, and left everything in the center of what was apparently the living room. It took two more trips before they had everything and everyone in the new apartment.

Kagome began looking around. The living room led to the kitchen through two large swinging doors, she could see the white refrigerator, white dishwasher, white stove, even the sink set in the grey countertop was white. The walls and floor tiles were white. The living room had beige carpet. She walked down the hallway, a small bathroom to the right, and at the end were two bedrooms, one on either side. The first bedroom was a pretty decent size, with a large closet. The second was considerably smaller with a small closet, but it had it's own small bathroom. All of the walls were white and the carpet was beige. Only the kitchen and bathrooms had white tile. They began unpacking.

Kagome began to drag the bed to the larger bedroom.

| Shouldn't you decide who is sleeping where first? So you will know where to put things. |

Well damn, Naraku had a point. She watched as people argued about the location of their personal bathroom stuff. She sighed.

“Alright, first things first. Kikyo, Sango, and the kids are sleeping in the big bedroom. The bed goes in there. Miroku, Inu, and Kouga are sleeping in the smaller one. You'll just have to wait until we can get more beds. The bathroom in the hall is primarily the girl's. If a guy uses it and leaves the seat up, I'll have your balls on a platter. Got it?” There were winces from the guys and laughter and grins from the girls. “Further more, the kitchen and living room are shared territory, lets keep it clean, and please wear clothes, don't walk around nude. Lastly, no fighting, please. The whole place is white, lets not get bloodstains on it and keep property damage to a minimum. You're in a new area. People here aren't as nice as in the old one. There are supposedly a lot of gangs in this part. I don't want any of you caught in a turf war. Please be home by 9 o'clock, 9:30 at the latest. If you're going to be out later, call ahead of time. Don't flash money around here. There are plenty of pickpockets. Mainly the point I'm trying to get across is to be careful.”

After everyone had absorbed the new house rules, they continued to unpack the boxes and arrange the furniture. Kagome checked the clock on the stove and realized it was already 5:00.

“Shit…” she cursed.

Inuyasha was the first by her side, closely followed by Ryo. “What's the matter Kagome. Did you hurt yourself?”

She waved him away, laughing nervously. She really didn't want to tell them. What would they think if they new she danced at a bar. Okay so she sang too, and it was really a club. But still.

“Oh nothing… I'm fine. I just realized I was late for something… that's all. Well since you all are done packing why don't you relax. I'll bring home some dinner around 8 or so. Mom, Souta, you can stay if you want. See you tonight.”

The kids hugged her and she received odd looks from the others. It was one of those times where they new she wasn't telling them the whole truth, but they didn't question her. Good.

She waved and took the stairs, flying at a demonic speed. She walked quickly once she reached the main floor, nothing inhuman. She jogged out the door into the biting December air. Watching for other people she ducked into a dark alley, the kind you would normally avoid. Tapping into Naraku's energy, she melted into the shadows, located the club, and melted back into reality. She was in the back alley of Lunar Eclipse, where she worked, next to the employee entrance. The employee entrance went straight to the dressing room. She shifted to her other appearance, Nara. Nara was her alias. She walked in and ran into a muscular chest.

“You're late Nara…” The broad muscular man tsked. Duke was one of the bodyguards that monitored the employee entrance. There had been cases of overly enthusiastic fans. “You were suppose to be here five minutes ago to relieve Sharon and Grim. Just what were you doing that made you so late? Hmm…” He had a lecherous smile on that Kagome had come to realize meant he was just playing. So she decided to play back. She took in his appearance and realized with a start that his black shirt that was normally tucked in, was untucked and wrinkled. His eyes held a fogged look, like an afterglow. His purple dyed hair, which normally stood in stiff gelled spikes, lay flat and mussed, like hands had been run through it enough to remove most of the gel. She giggled. Him and Grim had been at it again. They were a couple. Grim, along with Sharon, were the morning shift entertainers. Grim wasn't that grim at all. He was tall and lean, muscled, but not the body builder type like Duke. Grim was goofy and cheerful, always the optimist. His hair was naturally golden blonde, shoulder length, and slightly wavy. Said being walked up behind Duke and encircled his waist with fishnet clad arms.

“Well Nara, I guess it's your turn.” Grim winked. “There's a lot of hotties out there tonight. Maybe we can finally hook you up with someone.”

Nara laughed and shook her head, causing her velvet black hair to cascade around her face. Flipping it back with a sweep of her hand, she smirked at them. “Do you really think there's a man out there who could handle me?” They all laughed.

Five minutes found Nara in the dressing room dialing the number of a pizza place. She informed them that she needed 5 large pepperoni pizzas and she would come get them around 8. The cost was surprisingly only $37.58 because of a buy three get one free deal. Nodding, she hung up the phone and began changing into her outfit for the night. Setting her clothes on the counter of her desk, she began to pull on the heavy black pants. They were loose and baggy with blood red chains hanging from here and there. She was staring at the shirt trying to figure out how she would get it on when Sharon walked in.

“Oh I'm sorry! I should've knocked or something.” She said, laughing at the situation.

“It's fine. These rooms need locks or something, I swear. I'll never forget the time I walked in on Duke & Grim in his dressing room.” Nara mimicked the face they'd both made, making Sharon burst out laughing. Nara was closest to Sharon, they were all her friends but the only ones with youkai blood was Sharon, herself, and Trei Tenme, the manager. Sharon was tall and well muscled for a woman, she looked 25, but her auburn hair was beginning to grey and her blue eyes held centuries worth of knowledge. Her 25 year old body would remain sustained for centuries to come with the wolf youkai blood running through her. Her hair would continue to grey, albeit slowly, as her human heritage demands. They talked often in between the shift change. One frequent topic was that of their manager. They knew he was a hanyou, but neither knew what kind.

Sharon was eyeing the red shirt that Nara had failed to put on. It was long sleeved and off the shoulders. There were horizontal slits going down the sides and along the sleeves. She looked at Nara, who was glaring at the red fabric. “Do you need some help?”

Nara's eyes focused on Sharon, begging. “Please…”

Sharon held up the material, making sure to keep the slits scrunched together. Nara put her head and arms through. Sharon held the sleeves out as Nara slipped her arms in, taking many tries. It seemed that each slit was an obstacle, her hand and arm sliding through it instead of past it. Finally it was on. She hugged Sharon before she left. She knew that the shirt would hide the jewel, all of her costumes covered it. She wasn't worried, because it was safely hidden under enough charms to choke an elephant. Any energy that leaked out was easily covered by the youki she herself emitted to hide her reiki.

Sitting down, she pulled on the black boots. A loud knock dragged her attention from lacing the boots to a head poking into the room. The door opened and Terry and Nate walked in, both wearing the straight black shirt and pants that was required of the back stage employees. They were in charge of music and lights. Jerry's black braid swayed with every step. His gold eyes were warm and smiling. He reminded her of a more polite and friendly Inuyasha. Nate was more blunt and some people would mistake it for hostility or rudeness, but he really was kind. His blue hair was layered to frame his face, the longest pieces reaching his shoulders. The green eyes sparkled in mirth. She frowned, knowing something unpleasant was probably about to happen.

Jerry handed her a folded sheet of paper, then went to playing with the end of his braid, a nervous gesture for him. He cleared his throat before speaking. “We know that you've already given us your list of songs for tonight… but we had a first song request. It's a little different than what you normally sing. Um… here are the lyrics, we wanted to give you more time to remember them, but you were a bit late.” He nodded his head, and with task complete, left the room.

Nate smiled before speaking quietly. “You can blame this on the guy that sits in the back with red hair and green eyes, the one that's got a new girl with him every night. The name on his Membership Card was Shaun Shiro, if that helps.” Then he left too.

Nara unfolded the paper, read the lyrics and gaped. They couldn't be serious. Not what she normally sings? Not what anyone would normally sing, was more accurate. She sighed before rereading the lyrics, it's not like she had a choice. That was one of the Membership benefits, requesting songs, skipping the lines, the chance to reserve the whole club.

After finishing her makeup, she made her way toward the stage.

“I can't dance alone.
Will you come dance with me?
Let's have a party!”

The music already had the background singer, which was a good thing because Nara would have felt ridiculous singing nonsense words. “Do do be do be do be do be do be do be do be do , do be do be do Do be do do be do be do be do be do be do be do be, do do be do be do.”

Nara picked up again on the second verse.

“I'm no bimbo.
Boys love me.
Oh baby,
I like candy.

Come take my hand,
Come and dance with me.
My sweet lips will make you see.
I will take you through the night.
Stay until the morning light.
I'm your candy girl.

I'm your candy girl.
Why do you tease me?
I'm your candy girl.
Baby, baby please me.
I'm your candy girl.
Why do you tease me?
I'm your candy girl.

I wanna have some candy.
Oh, bubble gum, I love you boys.
I wanna be your bubble gum.”

“Da da de de dum.”

“Come take my hand,
Come and dance with me.

I'm your candy girl…”

The music faded with the nonsense words. The song seemed so childish and ridiculous to her, but the audience had apparently liked it. She took a deep breath before the next song began. The first song she had picked for the evening, Possession by Sarah McLachlan. It meant a lot to her and it described her life so well.

“Listen as the wind blows from across the great divide
Voices trapped in yearning, memories trapped in time
The night is my companion, and solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here and not be satisfied?”

She couldn't help but think about all the people she'd left behind in Sengoku Jidai, People who she would probably never see again. Her thoughts strayed to everything she had now, Naraku. She use to be afraid of the dark when she was little, but now it welcomed her. She had her friends, but there were so many things she couldn't talk to them about, like being a succubus. She really didn't have anyone she trusted enough that she could be intimate with.

“And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after, I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear.”

Then there was the whole deal with Hiei. She had begun to train and perfect her demonic abilities, scent and aura tracking. She would always remember the touch of his aura and his heated scent. She could feel him when he passed by the area. That time that they'd touched had left her with a perfect imprint of him, a place where only he would fit. Did he know or even care?

“Through this world I've stumbled
So many times betrayed
Trying to find an honest word to find
The truth enslaved
Oh you speak to me in riddles
And you speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath
Your words keep me alive.”

And then there's Ryo. He was so confusing. Everything in her told him that he was a danger, not to her life, but to her heart. Yet, he had done nothing to validate that fear. Today he'd made a physical advance. She knew he wanted her. But did he want to be with her?

She finished up the song and went back stage. She took a few drinks of water before returning to the stage.

A few hours later found Nara checking the neon clock or the bar. 7:55. She gave the audience a seductive smile before informing them that she was taking a break and that they could put their requests in at the bar for what they wanted the DJ to play. A crowd quickly formed at the bar and as she neared her dressing room, she heard Narcolepsy by Third Eye Blind start blaring through the stereo. Pulling her wallet out of her pocket of the jeans on the desk. She made her way to the back door. Waving to Duke, she left the Lunar Eclipse. Once surrounded by the darkness provided by the tall buildings on either side of the dead end alleyway, she let herself melt into the shadows.

Reappearing outside a pizza place, she didn't bother to change back and instead changed to her full youkai appearance, in case there happened to be any fans of Nara here. She went in cautiously, looking for any one who would know her as Kagome, because that was the name she'd given over the phone. She let out a relived sigh and went up to the front counter. “Hello, I'm here to pick up an order for Kagome Higurashi.”

The guy yelled behind him. “Order for Higurashi, Kagome!”

She winced, waiting to see if anything bad would happen. Someone wanting to kill her, steal the jewel, not like they could anyway, but she had never expected this.

“Kagome? Is that you?” a clearly male voice said from behind her. `Oh no…' She thought, shifting her eyes to blue.

“Hi Houjo…”

The guy at the front counter came back with her pizzas. She moved to hand him the money, but ended up dropping it on the floor. She sat her wallet on the counter as she knelt to hurriedly to pick up the two twenties. Houjo was still trying to talk to her. “It's not what it looks like, we're just studying. It isn't a date Kagome. You know you're the only one for me…”

Kagome didn't know what he was talking about until she turned around after giving the guy the money. There was a girl coming toward them, she had shoulder length brown hair and brown eyes that stared suspiciously at the scene. The girl stopped midstep, eyes widening. She knew Kagome was a youkai. She was spiritually aware. The look was enough for Kagome. She needed to get out of there. She received her change, grabbed her pizzas, and made a dash for the door, throwing “I'm sorry Houjo, I have to go.” over her shoulder. She melted into the shadows, reappearing in the alley near the apartments. She entered the building and took the elevator up to the sixth floor. Realizing she'd left her key at the Lunar Eclipse, she knocked on the door. Sango answered and helped her take the pizzas into the kitchen.

The pizza was served and everyone sat in the living room eating. She had already threatened everyone not to make a mess. Kagome only ate one piece, not wanting to get stomach cramps at work. She cleared her throat to get their attention. “Since I have tomorrow off we can go shopping for food.” She looked at the clock, 8:25. “I have to go back to work now, I'll be home late, so don't wait up.” After the night's second goodbyes, she headed back to the Lunar Eclipse.

Once back at work, she quickly headed to her dressing room. She went to pull her wallet out of her pocket when she realized that it wasn't there. She put fingers to her temple, knowing she didn't have time to go back to the pizza place. All she had was a few dollars left in it, she kept most of her money in the bank, and she'd left her checkbook at home, so it wasn't that important. Her lip quivered slightly, she did have pictures in it though. Pictures of her and Souta with their mother and father and grandfather. A few pictures she'd taken in Sengoku Jidai… Kaede, the village, some of her and Inuyasha together, the one where Sango had convinced her to try on her taijiya outfit, even the picture Miroku had taken when he had convinced a young lord to ask for her hand in marriage. To this day she still thinks the only reason he did it was to get back at Inuyasha for something. So many memories… Sure she had others in photo albums… but no duplicates… She almost wanted to cry. Looking at her reflection in the mirror, she noticed that her eyes were more pink than red. Strange. She pushed the emotions away and her eyes went back to red. Shaking her head she went back on stage to finish up the night.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened. She sang, they danced, and she drank their lust. Many youkai eyes watched her move, drank in her form, licked at her shear power. Nothing out of the ordinary, until a familiar figure walked in and headed straight to the bar. This time she was the one lusting, and the audience drank it down, fueling them. Her distraction cracked her power shields, only a little, but enough. His head whipped around to look straight at her. Red eyes locked with red eyes. The next song came on and Nara put her body and power into every movement.

“Lie awake in bed at night
And think about your life
Do you want to be different?
Try to let go of the truth
The battles of your youth
'Cause this is just a game

It's a beautiful lie
It's a perfect denial
Such a beautiful lie to believe in
So beautiful, beautiful
That makes me

It's time to forget about the past
To wash away what happened last
Hide behind an empty face
Don't have too much to say
'Cause this is just a game

It's a beautiful lie
It's a perfect denial
Such a beautiful lie to believe in
So beautiful, beautiful
That makes me

Ohhh….

Everyone who's looking at me
I'm running around in circles, angry
Acquired desperation's building high
I've got to remember this is just a game

So beautiful, beautiful, it's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful, it's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful, it's a beautiful lie
So beautiful, beautiful
It's a beautiful lie

It's a perfect denial
Such a beautiful lie to believe in
So beautiful, beautiful
That makes me…”

That was the last song of the evening. Hiei's eyes were blazing, like hot fresh blood. She could sense his pleasure, practically taste it. It burned along her skin as she turned to walk back to the dressing room. She could feel him as she left through the back doors. Even after she had slipped through the shadows, she felt him at the edge of her mind. She made her way to her apartment, quietly unlocking the door, knowing everyone was asleep inside, as it was nearly midnight. Her senses still stretching out to Hiei, she felt every being in their assigned place, except for Ryo who was no where to be found, thankfully. She made her way to the couch, not bothering to turn on any lights. Laying down she closed her eyes, reaching out to the energy that is Hiei putting her need, desire, and loneliness. She felt a shocked reply. Putting up every barrier she had, she let herself relax into the cushions. She knew Hiei wasn't going to waste any time on her, let alone care if she was lonely. Besides there was no way, with a body like that, that he was single.

She sighed before slipping into sleep.

-

Back at the Lunar Eclipse Hiei stared at the place the demoness just exited. It had to have been her, the miko youkai. Sesshomaru had called her Kagome. He had taken three steps toward the back before he realized what he was doing.

END

Yes… yes… I know, I update slowly, but I've got a job & school & I still have to eat and sleep every now and then. But hey, at least it's a long chapter… I'm prolly gonna start on the next chapter as soon as I post this one, so it might not take too long. Maybe.

ALSO THANK EVERYONE FOR REVIEWING! Seriously, I probably would've given up on the fic if it weren't for the positive feedback. So thank you all, more than you can know.

Yours sincerely,
Crystal Flame
