A MATTER OF THE SOUL

Chapter 14

Half an hour later left Hiei frustrated and annoyed. It was like the way school children play keep-away. It had him dashing back and forth. He didn't know why it angered him so easily, but it was like throwing gasoline into a fire. A dark whisper from his youkai subconscious gave him his answer. His woman should not deny him. With that thought, he unleashed his Jagan, and sent it to paralyze the woman.

Kagome purred in delight as she ran through the foliage. The shadows sliding about her body, she would duck behind one great tree and then reappear behind another a few miles away. She was keeping just out of the grasp of her would be prey. He was a quick little devil, but not quick enough. Her smile faded around the edges when she felt him release a giant burst of energy. Kagome gathered her shadows about her body, ready should she need them.

It flew towards her and just as it licked at her skin, she vanished. Hiei screamed, the inside of his mind a jumble of emotions, his youkai instincts raging.

---

Kagome all but collapsed in the alley beside her apartment building. He was going to paralyze her, and almost had. She filed away the feel of that power for later use. Kagome leaned back against the wall to wait for her legs to become responsive again. They tingled a bit, which she hoped was a good sign. Naraku's ongoing silence was also relieving. She knew that he would warn her if something bad were about to happen. So she waited and let her mind drift.

She had to get up early tomorrow to go shopping for food and school supplies, as she and the kids would be heading back to school Monday for the start of the spring trimester. Kagome wondered why she bothered since there was no way she could get her grades to their standards. The fact that she couldn't get any of her older friends into school continued to plague her. Though they were all up to date with the home schooling she'd set up for them. Kikyo, Miroku, and Sango would do well at any school. She worried about Inuyasha and Kouga though. They weren't stupid by any means, but she did worry about their destructive and violent natures. No matter how many times she scolded them about their behavior, they were still rude, easily riled up, and had the tendency to start fights over nothing. Kagome shook her head, guys never change.

Kagome tested her legs, and finding them stable, she stood. A human looking Kagome made her way into the building. She pressed the button for the elevator and as she waited, she could feel the pressure of powerful youki on her back. The elevator dinged and she walked in. Just as she turned around, Ryo walked in and the doors shut.

The look he was giving her was undeserved. It said, `I know where you were and who you were with.' It was the look she used to give Inuyasha when he went off with Kikyo. Kagome looked blankly back.

Ryo growled and cornered her. Towering over her, he glared. “Don't try and act innocent.”

Now Kagome growled and pushed against him, without budging him. “Back off Ryo. What I do is none of your business.”

His eyes sparked. Like the sun blazing against a blood red sky. He lowered his face to hers. “It is my business Kagome. I want you to myself. I am not going to share you with anyone else.” Then he kissed her hard, putting his whole body against hers.

Sandwiched between a hard body and the metal of the elevator wall, Kagome was trapped. She struggled and tried to claw at him, but he grabbed both of her delicate wrists in one hand and pinned them above her head. He was kissing along her jawline while his free hand was tracing along the top of her jeans. With skilled fingers he undid the button. As his hand was about to slide down her pants, the elevator door opened to her floor. Kagome pushed against Ryo with as much force as she could muster and exited the elevator quickly. He didn't follow after her.

She had her key out and ready by the time she was at her door. She unlocked it with ease and entered, locking both the knob and the deadbolt behind her. Kagome walked on tip toes to the couch, avoiding all the creaky spots in the floor, and laid down. She forced her body to relax and emptied her mind. She closed her eyes, but did not sleep.

END OF CHAPTER

To Find A Heart is going pretty good. It's definitely a more sadistic part of my imagination.

Once again THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has REVIEWED. I hope not to disappoint.
