Chapter 3

`Well?'

The dark, seductive voice cut through his thoughts easily. He was used to this by now, although if he were to tell people he regularly carried on conversations with a centuries old Fox spirit that resided in his head they would have called him insane.

`Well what Youko?'

He refrained from speaking aloud; he didn't want to draw unwanted attention to himself while he found out what exactly it was that Youko was referring to. The kitsune was known for popping up with random comments.

`When are we going to start searching for her?'

He didn't need to ask what `her' that Youko was referring to. He was well aware of which girl he was talking about. She had been plaguing his thoughts the past few hours, which surprised him. Normally assuming a girl had caught his attention it was something that didn't last for long unless Youko was clamoring in his head. And the fox spirit had been strangely silent.

`I don't know, perhaps tomorrow?'

He wasn't entirely certain where to start his search. The girl and her mother had not been very informative while they were talking so he didn't even have a name to go by to start his search. The only name he had been able to catch had been Inuyasha. A strange name that somehow seemed familiar but he was certain he hadn't heard it anywhere before. Perhaps Youko had, but if that was the case he wasn't being forthcoming with the information.

`Really Red, I think you enjoy torturing me. We should have gone after her earlier. It would have made this ever so much easier.'

He smiled, if nothing else Youko was predictable. At least to him anyway, others that ended up with the misfortune to run across him had found otherwise. Sometimes he swore that Youko had a one-track mind.

`I thought you enjoyed a good challenge Youko? Where is the challenge of just walking up to her and asking her name?'

Youko considered this for a moment; it had been a while since they had the opportunity to take on an interesting challenge. But how big of a challenge would it actually be to find this girl? Probably not very much, especially if they used all the resources at their disposal. It would be extremely easy if they were to ask Hiei to help. He was an exceptional tracker. One of the best in fact, but somehow Youko doubted that the Fire Apparition would be terribly interested in helping him hunt down a human female.

`You know your only making things more difficult on us to find her don't you? If we leave now we can get back to where we saw her. Perhaps we can pick up her scent and track her to wherever she disappeared to.'

Kurama had to laugh at that comment. With a grin he mentally pictured Youko in his fox form nose to the ground like a common dog, scenting out the track. Youko picked up on his thought easily though and bristled at the implications.

`I'll have you know I am not a common dog thank you!'

Kurama's grin vanished and he sent comforting thoughts to the kitsune. Youko if nothing else was a very proud creature. It wouldn't do to unnecessarily piss him off, the migraine that would result from that wouldn't be worth it.

`I know Youko. Is it really that important we go right now?'

The sound of thunder rumbled overhead. Kurama really wasn't looking forward to going out in the rain if he could at all help it. And God forbid any of his friends catch him out at such a time. They'd insist on knowing exactly what he was doing and he really didn't feel like explaining that they were out looking for a girl.

Hiei was likely the only one who wouldn't attempt to give him hell over that little piece of information but he really didn't want to have to listen to his derogatory comments about looking for a human sex partner.

`Hey! We're not looking for her for sex Youko!'

Youko chuckled into his mind; he wasn't about to point out to him that the thought of sex for once hadn't come from him. Kurama would likely say to hell with it and refuse to go hunting for the night. So for now at least he would let Kurama believe whatever he wanted concerning the girl. As long as he got what he wanted in the end.

`I've never felt anything like her before. She was so pure…. What about you Youko?'

It was something that had been bugging him. Everyone had something about him or her that was impure right? So what was it about this girl that was so different? It was one of the many things he was determined to find out.

`Purity like hers?' Never seen it before in all of my travels. The closest I've ever seen came in the form of a Miko long ago. She was the creator of the Shikon no Tama but even she had a certain taint to her that this girl lacks.'

Kurama was familiar with the Legend of the Shikon no Tama. Youko had made it a point to insist he research about any particular artifacts that would be of any potential interest to them. However the legend of the jewel was incomplete. No one knew where it was, as the legend went it was shattered. What had happened to the pieces though? No one knew, or if they did they were keeping the knowledge closely guarded.

`Do you think she could be a Miko Youko?'

It was a valid question; if a Miko came the closest then perhaps that is what this girl was. In that case it may be easier to track her down. After all, Miko's regardless of their power eventually made their way to a Shrine. Kurama rose out of the chair he had been sitting in and made his way to the front door. He shrugged on his jacket and shoes before heading outside.

`I suppose it is possible. It's not like Miko's are a rarity though it has been centuries since there has been one of any great power.'

`Well Youko, if she is it will give us a starting point to look for her. Still, it may be easier said than done with the sheer number of Shrines that there are.'

Kurama cast a glance up to the sky, taking note of the thick blanket of dark clouds. He was going to have to hurry if he wanted to have any chance of picking up the girls scent before it rained. Once the sky opened up it was unlikely that they would be able to go much further. As enhanced as his scenting ability was due to Youko it wasn't as good as it would have been if he were a dog instead of a fox.

`I'd rather be a fox than a dog any day.'

He picked up the pace; the café they had been at earlier that day was still a couple of blocks away. The scent of rain hung heavily in the air. He caught a flash of black in his peripheral vision and had to smile. For some reason Hiei was keeping him company on this little side trip that he was making.

`Perhaps he is bored Kurama?'

`Not at all, I'm curious on what could drag the two of you out in this weather though.'

Hiei's voice joined in on their conversation making the two of them wonder exactly how long he had been listening in. Apparently not long though if he was wondering why they were going out.

`Can't we take a nice walk outside before it rains?'

Kurama could just picture the look that Hiei was casting their direction at Youko's suggestion. While they both might be more at home in nature, that didn't include the possibility of getting soaked. However they were spared from continuing the conversation when they arrived at the café.

Kurama pulled Youko close enough to the surface to enhance their sense of smell even further and inhaled deeply. He hoped that Youko would be able to pick it up out of the masses of other smells present. It had been a fairly busy day.

Luck was with them this day though; he caught hold of it easily. Her scent had the faintest trace of cinnamon to it, which was very uncommon among humans. He briefly wondered if perhaps that was the trace smell that was left behind from her Miko powers, if indeed she was a Miko.

`It's a good possibility. All power leaves behind a smell though it varies between users. If memory serves me correctly this is indeed the smell of a Miko's purification powers. Though for it to invade her scent this strongly when it isn't in use she'd have to be strong.'

`You mean to tell me you are out here tracking down a Miko? Are you looking to be purified?'

Kurama just shook his head at the smaller demon that now stood beside him. He wasn't about to explain exactly why they were searching for her. Not yet anyway, there was no reason to. There was no point in alerting everyone to the presence of a powerful Miko. There was a good chance that the girl was largely untrained. After all, the Reikai wasn't going to allow a Miko over into the Makai to practice control.

`Not at all Hiei, she is merely a curiosity to pass the time.'

Hiei gave Kurama a hard look and watched as the avatar left, obviously being guided by Youko's sense of smell. It would seem that the kitsune was determined he was going to find this girl come hell or high water. He could only hope that he knew what he was doing otherwise he'd end up purified.

Dinner was finally over and everyone had congregated in the living room. It was hard to believe but her grandfather had finally come to accept Inuyasha being there. No longer did he attempt to plaster ineffective ofudas on the poor hanyou's head although Kagome wasn't exactly certain if it was because he truly accepted Inuyasha or because he knew the ofudas did not work anyway.

Inuyasha had seated himself on the couch with Kagome next to him while they watched Souta play his video games. Currently the video game of choice was Final Fantasy X, which of course Inuyasha scoffed at regularly. Every time Souta had Yuna summon an Aeon a comment could be expected from the Hanyou along the lines of `Feh that would be too easy for me to beat.'

Kagome just had to roll her eyes at him; after all it wasn't as if they were real characters so he would never get the chance to test himself out against them. She could just imagine the hell that would break loose if they were. They had enough trouble with the real life monsters they fought every day.

“Are you planning on spending the night Inuyasha?”

Kagome's mother was curious, he rarely stayed over night but seeing as he hadn't left yet it was a distinct possibility. However with the rain that was threatening the likelyhood of him being outside was slim to none. She wouldn't stand for it; there was no sense in him getting sick.

Inuyasha's ears caught the sound of thunder rolling overhead easily. He was loath to leave Kagome's company tonight. He looked over to Kagome who was gazing at him expectantly. Unless he missed his guess, she didn't want him to leave her either.

“I'll stay tonight, although it's going to storm so my normal spot isn't a possibility. Can I stay here on your couch?”

Kagome's mother laughed at him, she would never understand the fascination that he held with trees. She rose from her seat and went to the closet in the hall and pulled out a blanket along with a fluffy pillow.

“You're welcome to use the couch if you wish. I'll make breakfast in the morning, you're welcome to eat with us if you are still here.”

Inuyasha wasn't going to pass up on another meal and readily agreed to stay for breakfast. But after that they needed to head back to the past. They had already taken enough time out of their journey; they needed to get started again soon.

A large crack of thunder roared overhead as the heavens opened up letting the rains pour down. The occupants of the house were thankful for the roof that was over their heads. Unknown to them however there was a very unhappy kitsune and an even unhappier Fire Apparition that had gotten caught in the downpour that washed Kagome's scent away.

Her trail had gone cold.

Author Notes: Responses to questions.

Rabid: Unfortunately I found out the hard way with the hair, I'm scared to check but I think perhaps I'm half bald now and the other stories still have no chapters. Apparently my hair was not a worthy enough sacrifice for the writing bug gods. I'll have to find something else they deem acceptable. At least I'm not being threatened with any gruesome tortures over those other stories yet. It's coming though, I just know it. I hope this counts as soon enough for an update, the other chapter will probably be up sometime this evening knowing me. I just can't hold chapters back from you all; it was hard enough to refrain posting this last night. As for the Original work, I have it saved to the computer even though I pulled it off the net. If you wish I can repost it again. Though this story is going to have some key differences to it most likely since I'm drawing it out. Let me know if you'd like me to. Anyway, Hope you enjoy :)

Arbor: If you can believe it I haven't read or watched any YYH either. A situation I hope to rectify in the near future. All my perceptions on the characters have been pulled from others fan fictions. So when people tell me I'm managing to stay in character I heave a huge sigh of relief. The plot bunnies will NOT leave me alone, they refuse to listen to me when I tell them four stories to work on at once is more than enough of a headache, they want me to start on more! I'll tell them to go see you; perhaps they can be of greater use to you than to me at the moment?

Mija: Unfortunately there won't be room for the both of them in the fic *Sighs heavily* In the original one shot Inuyasha ended up dying. Kagome's going to go through hell dealing with his death, so expect some serious, depressing chapters to come. I've toyed with the idea of him being brought back into the picture later on but I think that would perhaps be a bit too much for Kagome to deal with, especially with how she ends up with Kurama. I'll think on it for a while.
