Chapter 4

“Dammit!”

Hiei raised an eyebrow towards his friend surprised at the outburst. It wasn't often that Kurama cursed. While it was perfectly understandable, he'd be cursing a lot worse if he wasn't able to dry himself quickly. He loathed being wet. Kurama on the other hand had no such handy method of drying himself, so he stood there looking quite drowned while they waited for the rain to let up enough they could make it back to his home.

Little did he know that wasn't the reason for Kurama's outburst though. Both him and Youko were quite upset that her trail was gone now. There was no way for it to survive the onslaught of water that was pouring down.

However her scent was now imprinted to memory, there was no way that either him or Youko would forget it. If they happened to run across it by accident they would have no problem tracking her down that way. What Kurama did not need though was the same Fox demon chewing him out, which he was currently doing.

`If you had moved your ass when I initially mentioned tracking her down we wouldn't be in this predicament you know?'

Kurama stifled a groan; he knew a headache was coming tonight. Youko was quite thoroughly pissed off now, there would be no calming him down until he decided enough was enough. Unfortunately for him, there was no telling when that was going to be.

`Youko I really don't need this. I'm just as frustrated as you are. We'll go with the thought of checking out the local shrines tomorrow. There's nothing else we can do tonight.'

Kurama could see the disgusted look the kitsune was giving him over that particular idea. Unless they got lucky they could be searching for months, there were that many Shrines to check out.

`Bullshit, there is an easier way to find her. Have Hiei use his Jagan. Surely if she is a powerful Miko like I am thinking she will be easy to track that way.'

Hiei who had of course been listening in objected to being used to track down this supposed Miko. He wasn't sure what the big deal was but he was certain it was Youko that was doing most of the pushing to find her. If that was indeed the case he was most certainly not going to help him so he could have a fling. It was bad enough he had already gotten soaked. It hadn't helped his current mood at all.

`Leave me out of this Fox, I am not going to help you land a Miko as a sex partner.'

“Who said we wanted her as a sex partner?”

Kurama's only response was an unbelieving glare and he didn't bother to further elaborate. Whatever he said would most likely not be completely true, for at least one of them wanted to get the girl in bed. It was just Youko's nature. So instead he said nothing to the look he was given.

His attention turned once again to the sky, thanking Inari that the rain was letting up enough that he could make a dash for his house. There was no sense in going back to his mothers with how late it was now. Once home he could warm up with a hot shower and then plan on what Shrines were on the list to tackle first. The sooner they got this over with the happier both him and Youko would be.

He bolted out into the drizzle intent on making it home before he got too much wetter. Hiei of course quickly passed him, apparently having decided to make his way to Kurama's house as well. He knew he had no chance of keeping up with the quick apparition, he'd be at his house waiting on him with a bored look on his face asking him what took him so long. A perfect way to end a dreadful night. Thankfully if nothing else, Youko was no being silent, apparently taking note of Kurama's rapidly deteriorating mood.

Inuyasha was awake long before anyone else in the house was. It was a long time habit of his; he couldn't sleep in if his life depended on it. So he waited downstairs, rather impatiently hoping someone would get up soon. After all he was promised breakfast wasn't he?

Little did he know that no one in that house woke up at four in the morning. Kagome's mother wouldn't be up until around six so he would just have to wait. Around five thirty though the wait became too unbearable for him. Hell, Kagome was normally up by this time when they were in the past. Of course, that was because Inuyasha always woke her up.

It was then that he made the decission that if he was up then she should be up as well. He made his way up the stairs none too quietly. Perhaps if he made enough noise everyone else would awaken. Sadly for him, that was not the case. He made his way to her bedroom door and opened it up.

Now, Inuyasha was used to seeing Kagome in her normal nightclothes in the past, but seeing as she was home she had felt comfortable wearing something other than the flannel she normally wore. And fortunately, or unfortunately for Inuyasha depending on how you look at it, she had kicked the blanket off of her sometime in the middle of the night. She had picked out a pale lavender chemise to wear to bed and while it covered everything on her, it still left enough revealed that Inuyasha had a hard time swallowing.

Now he wasn't certain if he should wake her up. If he did she might well sit him into next year for seeing her clothed like that. Either way, he couldn't bring himself to move away from her bed. She looked so peaceful laying there asleep, for once not having a care in the world. He reached out with one hand and brushed a stray lock of hair away from her face. He cherished these moments where her expression was completely unguarded.

It was the feel of his hand against her face that slowly pulled Kagome out of her sleep. It was warm, comforting. Exactly how she wished he would touch her more often. She briefly wondered if she could feign sleep for a while longer just so she could continue to enjoy the feel of his skin against hers. He must have sensed her awakening though because his hand was hastily drew back. When she slowly opened her eyes he had a guilty look on his face. She hoped he wasn't feeling guilty for touching her.

It was then she noticed her legs weren't covered by the blanket. She reached down and pulled it up, briefly wondering if she should be upset at how much of her skin he had seen before deciding against it. Her school uniform had shown almost as much and it wasn't like Inuyasha was going to take advantage of her. It simply wasn't in his nature to do something unless she asked it of him. Even then she had her doubts as to whether or not he would touch her then.

“Good morning.”

If nothing else that small statement was enough to tell him that he wasn't about to become intimate friends with the floor. He visibly relaxed with the knowledge that she wasn't mad at him.

“Good morning Kagome. What's for breakfast?”

Kagome had to laugh at that, he always seemed to think with his stomach. Pity he would still have to wait for her mother to awaken. Patience wasn't one of his strong points but it was slowly getting better. Perhaps she was having more of an influence on him than she had originally thought.

“You'll have to ask Mom when she wakes up, which won't be for another twenty minutes or so. Is food the reason why you woke me up?”

Inuyasha paled, had she been acting to throw him off guard so he'd be surprised when she sat him? No, Kagome didn't take pleasure in that sort of torture, although there were times he was positive she got a kick out of watching him eat dirt.

“Feh, the sooner we eat the sooner we can go back and start hunting shards again. Sango has probably killed Miroku off by now you know? Without one of the two of us there to keep him in line he's probably driven her insane by now.”

“I'm sure they are just fine Inuyasha. After all, you've been gone less than twenty four hours. Surely he can behave himself for that long!”

“Are you sure you're awake? This is Miroku we are talking about!”

This was true, perhaps they should hurry after all. Miroku's wandering hand would be the death of him yet. Either from his wind tunnel or from Sango's Hiraikotsu. She wasn't sure which one would deal the death blow to the perverted monk.

“You might be right, but we still have to wait on Mom to get up. I can get a start on breakfast though so it will be ready when she wakes up. Go wait downstairs for me so I can go and get dressed please.”

Kurama woke early as was usual, although why he was not certain. It wasn't as if he had pressing business to take care of that morning. Well, aside from hunting through several dozen shrines in search of one girl. He was beginning to think perhaps this puzzle was best left set aside for a later time. Maybe he'd run across her again like had happened yesterday and save himself the work. If only it would be so easy.

`I think not. You should know by now we do NOT give up once we set our mind to something.'

And that voice alone would be the reason why he couldn't let her go. Youko would hound him to death until he gave in. Sometimes he had to wonder which one of them was actually the one in charge. Normally they had a peaceful coexistence in his head but at other times…

`You'd be lost without me, admit it.'

`Sometimes I wonder Youko.'

`I don't know, your life would have been so much duller than it is now if I weren't in here to keep you company. `

He had a point there. His life would be quite a bit duller, although there were days he wished for dull. No rabid fangirls chasing him throughout the school, no demons that came after his family to get to him. But he'd have missed out on being friends with the rest of the team which was something he was unwilling to give up if a choice ever needed to be made.

He hauled himself up and out of bed and made his way to the shower. Yes, he may have taken one last night but there was no reason why he couldn't take another. If nothing else the hot water was relaxing and it was going to be a stressful day, he just knew it. He adjusted the water to the perfect temperature and stripped down. He glanced at himself in the mirror taking note at how long his hair was getting. It was nearly down to his hips now. He thought perhaps he should stop somewhere and get it cut when Youko came back to the front of his thoughts with a vengence.

`Don't you even think about it!'

`Why not Youko? We'll have to get it trimmed eventually.'

`Trimmed is one thing but I saw what you were picturing! There's no way in hell you're cutting it THAT short!'

There wasn't much Youko would be able to do if he were bound and determined to do such a thing but to be honest he liked his hair longer. It definitely set him apart from everyone else, even if on occasion he was mistaken for a girl. He wasn't exactly sure what the reason for that was either. Youko had never had such problems in the past and they looked a lot alike when you really thought about it. Hair and eye color were their main differences. Perhaps he was built a bit leaner than Youko and of course he was shorter but still.

He stepped into the shower, taking delight for a few moments in the hot water that cascaded down his skin. Eventually though he turned his attention back to his hair. It took work to keep it in the silky condition that had girls falling down at his feet.

Youko just sat back amused at the thoughts going through his counter parts head. Honestly, he thought about the strangest things sometimes. A lot of it in his past had been simply his reputation. Few silver kitsunes were left in existence and none of them had the same reputation he did. If anyone had ever thought of him as a female they wisely kept their mouths shut. Of course here in the human realm they couldn't build the same reputation that they had before. Reikai would be hunting them down if they attempted such.

She waited until Inuyasha had vacated her room before crawling out from underneath the covers. She'd have to remember next time when Inuyasha spent the night to wear her normal night clothes. It was just too likely that he was going to come wake her up, like he did this morning.

She stripped off her outfit and went to her closet. Since they would be going back today it only made sense to go ahead and wear one of the new outfits they had picked up for traveling. Since it was hot out she stuck to lighter colors, picking out a pair of beige pants and a mint green shirt to go with it. It didn't take her long to get dressed and do her morning routine. Soon she was heading down the stairs where her very impatient hanyou waited for her at the dining room table.

“Alright Inuyasha you can stop tapping the table. I'll get breakfast started.”

“Good, I'm hungry.”

“Is there ever a time when you aren't hungry?”

Inuyasha just huffed at her and went back to tapping the table. She resisted rolling her eyes at his childish behavior as she set water boiling for rice and then proceeded to get the kettle out so she could make tea for them. Once that was finished she tossed an apple over to him. If nothing else it would hold him over until everything was ready.

“So do you want to talk about it yet?”

Kagome blinked, unsure of what it was that he was referring to.

“What are you talking about?”

“Whatever was bothering you yesterday that you didn't want to talk about.”

Kagome had been hoping that he had forgotten about that, pretty much like she had but as luck would have it he hadn't. There wasn't necessarily anything wrong per say anyway for her to want to talk about. It was more about how she felt about everything that was going to happen. But there was more to it, somehow she had a bad feeling. Something was going to happen. She wasn't sure when it would be or what it was exactly but it didn't ease up on the sinking feeling she got in her stomach.

“It was nothing Inuyasha.”

The look he was giving her clearly said otherwise but she was saved from answering when the tea kettle signaled the water was ready. She got up quickly and went to the stove doing her best to distract herself from that uneasy feeling that Inuyasha inadvertently brought up.

Once the tea was ready and the rice was almost done she turned back to the table. Inuyasha opened his mouth to obvious bring it back up but luck was for once on her side when her mother came down the staircase. She had a pleased look on her face, it wasn't often that someone else made breakfast. Souta was a disaster in the kitchen and Kagome wasn't home enough. Grandfather… Well, let's not even go there. The last time he was in the kitchen it ended up a disaster area.

Breakfast was served with minimal fuss and everyone sat down to eat. Inuyasha of course was sitting with Kagome on one side of him and Souta on the other. Her mother and grandfather sat across from the three of them. Souta chatted happily away with his hero while everyone else ate. Kagome had to wonder when he had time to chew and swallow the food he was eating with how quickly he was talking. It was a miracle that he hadn't choked himself yet.

“So how long will you be gone this time?”

“I'm not sure Momma. Inuyasha would probably be a better person to answer that question.”

All eyes turned to the hanyou and he couldn't help but fidget uncomfortably. He disliked how she had put the spotlight on him. Honestly if it were up to him they wouldn't have taken a break this time, they would have continued to push on with the shard hunt. But he also knew that he couldn't do that to her or her family.

“I'm not sure. A couple of weeks probably. If nothing else we'll need to restock supplies around then right Kagome?”

She nodded her head, he had turned the conversation back to her as she expected he would do. As much as he claimed to be the leader of the group when it came to public relations he generally left that field to her. Dealing with others made him uncomfortable since she wouldn't allow him to throw his weight around to get what he wanted.

“We'll come back as soon as we can. Eventually this has to come to an end. Then we can begin to look past all of this.”

`Assuming we live past the final fight' was the thought that crossed her mind but she didn't dare voice it, knowing it would upset everyone there. Also was the fear that perhaps that thought was voiced it would somehow make it come true.

The shadows that played across her face were more telling then she thought though for everyone that was at the table became abnormally quiet. Inuyasha looked at her with concern, guessing at what it was she was thinking. He reached over and gave her had a reassuring squeeze.

Before anything else could be said though she stood and excused herself from the table. She still had to finish getting her pack together. Granted, she had done much of it last night she wanted to double check it. More than once she'd left behind something important. Besides, it would give her something else to concentrate on.

Inuyasha and the rest of them watched her go up the stairs, her normally vibrant steps echoing heavily through the room. She had lost her spark and everyone had noticed it. He turned back to her mother who watched with a concerned look on her face.

“Don't worry, I'll make sure she comes home to you safe.”
