Chapter: 5
Just looking at the book on the table before him was giving him a massive headache. He had known there were a lot of shrines to sort through but he hadn't thought there would be THAT many of them. Youko was wisely refraining from saying I told you so but that didn't mean he couldn't feel his frustration. So much for the patience the Fox was reputed to have in abundance. It had obviously fled screaming sometime during the downpour last night.
It was obvious to him that calling on the phone to these places was not going to work, what exactly would he say? `I'm looking for a young woman with black hair and blue eyes that I seen a day ago. I think she's a Miko can you help me?' No, that would not do at all.
`You're overlooking another potential source of information.'
`If you are referring to going to Koenma, I am not sure if that is a good idea. If she is as powerful as you are thinking do you really want the Reikai involved with her at this stage?'
As loath as Youko was to involve them it would most likely be the fastest way for them to get the information. It was either that or go to some of his less reputable contacts. Either one could bring in potential problems.
`We could always go and speak with Kentaro. He might have information as to the girl.'
Kurama stopped and thought about it for a moment. Youko's idea had merit. Kentaro was one of their more trustworthy sources of information since he was a Reikai official that could occasionally be bought and usually he had a good handle on everything of interest that went on through the city.
`Fine, we'll go and hunt down Kentaro. Anything is better than checking each and every shrine.'
There was just a tint of impatience in Kurama's mind voice, which pleased Youko to no end. He was becoming as anxious to find the girl as he was. He waited patiently for Kurama to get ready to go. While they may be in a hurry there was no point in rushing out. Youko was perfection in his former life, he would expect no less from his human counterpart.
`You know you're entirely to vain for your own good Youko?'
`And you aren't?'
Kurama chuckled at that; he had long ago decided that perhaps the Kitsune spirit had influenced him a bit too much.
`Youko you know there is a good chance when we find this girl she isn't going to be interested in us whatsoever right?'
`That's highly unlikely to happen and you know it. Honestly now, how many girls have you known that we couldn't have if we truly desired them?'
`There is always a first time for everything Youko, you'd be doing well to remember that. After all, she got a good look at us and walked right on by like we weren't even there.'
`She wanted us and you know it Red. You saw the look in her eyes when she saw us. And I intend on giving her exactly what she wants. If you won't then let me take over, I'll be happy to be the one to fulfill any fantasies this girl could possibly have as well as a few of my own.'
Kurama groaned, he knew what was coming if he didn't put a stop to him and quickly. `As much as I would love to find out exactly what you plan on doing with her there is still the issue of finding her first and we cannot do that standing here daydreaming about your fantasies.'
`You're finally starting to think like me Red, I'm proud of you.'
`Just realize that if the girl is indeed involved with someone else that we are not going to interfere.'
Youko pouted at him, Kurama could feel the displeasure radiating off of him. `You're no fun you know that?'
`I'm serious Yuko, why break up a happy relationship just so you can have a one night stand?'
Youko became extremely quiet and Kurama began to think he had heard the end of their talks for a while before Youko came back with a quiet, serious tone. `Who said it would be a one night stand?'
Kurama wasn't sure of what to think of this more serious side of Youko. Generally he was never this quiet unless he was displeased with something or there was something that seriously bothered him.
`Because I know you Youko, you've never given any indication of ever wanting to settle down. And I seriously doubt that you ever will.'
Kurama put the finishing touches on his appearance and walked out the front door, locking it behind him. Kentaro was usually not an easy person to find seeing as he roamed the human realm keeping an eye on matters that Enma deemed important enough to warrant watching, but Kurama knew exactly where to look for him. This early in the morning he was likely to be found at a quiet coffee shop, This suited Kurama fine, he really didn't want to have to search the night clubs trying to find him. The less places they were seen together the less attention it would attract.
`You would think after 19 years you would know me better by now.' Youko sighed, being confined within a body with Kurama had its good points but also it's serious drawbacks. Namely he couldn't go off and do his own thing, he was almost always the spectator, watching life go by from the inside. It was a lonely existence, even if Shuichi was there to keep him company.
`Whatever do you mean Youko?'
`Your comment about me ever settling down. It's not exactly like I have the opportunity to do so. Anyone I pick you would have to agree on and vise versa. And sadly, none of the girls you've been attracted to have been worthy enough for either of our attentions.'
This was definitely not a conversation he had ever expected to have with the kitsune. Was it actually possible that Youko wanted a mate and family now? Why after all these centuries would it finally come up? Couldn't he have picked out a mate long before they had ever joined?
`You know how likely it is for either of us to be able to have a normal relationship with anyone Youko. Exactly how is it do you expect me to explain you to someone? Or the job we do for that matter? I'm afraid there more than likely isn't a female alive that would take that news well. Even Keiko has major issues with Yusuke's job and his situation isn't quite as complicated as ours.'
`That's why we have to be selective Red. We could find a girl who could accept what we are, you just have to seriously look instead of just picking up a girl here or there to spend an evening with.'
Kurama was shocked, it did indeed sound like Youko was the one who wanted something more. He couldn't hold back the questions now that they had been raised. The biggest one was why?
`That's easy enough to answer. In essence I am living a half-life. I get to see everything that transpires but I don't get to actively participate. It is rare that I have the opportunity to have control of our body. Try to see it from my point of view, how would you feel if our roles were reversed?'
Kurama knew exactly how he would feel; he had often thought of the circumstances that Youko lived under now when the fox spirit was deep asleep. It had plagued him for a while but he hadn't been able to think of a way to rectify the situation unless the split apart. And that just wasn't likely to happen.
`So you do understand. I would like to have my life back, as much as possible anyway. I never took a mate because I never expected my life to take the turn that it did. Had I known, perhaps I wouldn't have been quite so carefree? And now, these days you are right there are very few that could accept us as we are. But that doesn't mean that I am going to stop looking.'
`So you are serious then, about wanting to settle down?'
`Perhaps, if we could find the right girl. The question is, that if we did would our roles stay the same as they are now? I'm not sure which would be a worse torture, life as it is now or life with a girl we both love but staying locked inside.'
`Assuming that we could find someone who accepted everything about us then you know I would not keep you locked away from her Youko.'
Kurama could feel the corporeal warmth of Youko's arms wrap around him as a way of saying thank you for being understanding. It wasn't often that he let this side of himself be shown. Everyone knew about the cunning, ruthless Thief of Makai based on his reputation. What they didn't know was that was not the only side to him, he just kept his softer side well hidden. It would be considered a weakness, and Youko Kurama had no weaknesses!
`So you think this girl is the one then?'
Youko had been giving the question serious consideration since they had seen her. The average human had no knowledge of demons but Miko's were different. True Mikos were well aware that demons once existed. They weren't a made up fairy tale to tell young kids. However true Mikos were few and far between. If there was anyone among the humans that would accept the two of them, a miko would be the one. Unfortunately it was just as likely that said Miko would purify them instead of fall in love with them. It was a delicate line they would have to walk if this girl was indeed a Miko.
`We won't know until we find her, but she's a better possibility than any of the girls you've gone out with so far.'
That got Kurama laughing; Youko had a point there. He had made the mistake of dating a couple of the girls in his fan club that had been a disaster. Now he held himself aloof from everyone aside from the team. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, he was just as lonely as Youko was.
Any further discussion however was cut off though since they had arrived at the coffee shop. As he had expected, Kentaro was seated in a quiet corner away from the morning crowd. He made his way over to him, knowing that his contact was well aware of his presence even if he hadn't looked up from his book yet.
“Ah, Kurama. To what do I owe the pleasure of your company this morning?”
“Information. I'm looking for a Miko.”
Kentaro quirked a brow at this particular request. “I would suggest any one of the fine temples that grace our city but somehow I believe you have a specific Miko in mind.”
“Very true. She's young, perhaps seventeen or eighteen. Waist length black hair, blue eyes. She's pure, and she has power.”
Kentaro's eyes gleamed at the description, yes, he knew very well who this particular Miko was. Blue eyes were a rarity true enough but the purity was even more telling. There was only one Miko that he was aware of that was pure. And everyone with the proper classification in the Spirit Realm knew of this particular girl. He was unsure of why the avatar wanted to know about her though.
“What is the knowledge worth to you?”
Kurama narrowed his eyes at Kentaro, now they were getting somewhere. He knew that the knowledge would come with a price but exactly how much was he willing to give? Youko was snarling in the back of his mind, if it were up to him they would rip the knowledge from him. Price be damned, this contact knew who he was dealing with, but also knew that since he was one of the higher ranking Reikai officials Youko wouldn't touch him. Or at least that is what he had bet on.
`Well Youko? You know what he is going to ask you for. Is she worth it?'
`Fuck yes, give him what he wants so we can get on with this.'
“I'm waiting for your answer Kurama.”
Kentaro's eyes positively gleamed. He could see how badly the Fox wanted this information. He would get what he wanted. He had been trying for centuries to get back the heirloom sword that Youko had stolen from his family all of those years ago. It had been a constant blight on his family's reputation since it had been his father that had challenged Youko to begin with. Sad to say his father was a fool, believing that he could best the Spirit Kitsune. He had been one of the few opponents that had been left alive, the kitsune preferring to leave him to the humiliation he would endure. It had been too much for him, and subsequently he had taken his own life a few years later.
“Fine, you'll have it within the next two hours. You'll be here will you not?”
“For this, of course. Fail to bring it in the allotted time and no information will be forthcoming.”
Youko chose that moment to seize partial control, having had enough of this young upstart's arrogant attitude. He would be reminded of exactly who he was dealing with!
“Do not make threats you can not keep. Be thankful you are under Reikai protection, but continue down the path you tread though and I will over look that protection. Either way I will have the answers I want. It's up to you how much pain you go through giving me what I seek.”
Kentaro paled, for he knew that Youko did not make idle threats. He'd have to tread carefully, angering Youko was unwise. Regardless of how high up his station was. Rank didn't matter to the Spirit Fox. He had trusted in the safety of his station, it was now obvious to him that the protection offered to him was a mere hindrance in the kitsune's mind.
“Fine. I'll be here waiting for your return.”
Kurama turned and left without a backwards glance; he had a good distance to travel to get to the main lair where Youko kept his most valuable treasures. He darted down into a dark alley, waiting until he was certain there was no one to witness the fact that he was opening a portal through the barrier. A nifty trick to be able to do, he didn't want to have to call Botan and then explain to her why he wanted to head into the Makai.
Once he stepped through he gave in to Youko's insistence on letting him out. He could move faster this way and there was less likelyhood of someone being foolish and challenging them while they traveled.
It only took a moment, his hair lengthening and fading in color until it became shimmering silver. His ears made their way to the top of his head, swiveling in different directions to pick up any sounds that would mean danger approached. His tail swayed gently in the breeze, it's tip falling down past his knees.
Youko smirked; it was good to be the one in control for a change, though Shuichi was still present. They took in the landscape before deciding which direction they would need to take to reach the lair. With a flip of his tail he melted into the forest, heading off to the East, towards where his old home was.
A/N: Whew, thankfully this chapter is done, but it was necessary. Something had been lacking in Kurama's character to me in the past chapters. I'm hoping I added some depth to Youko instead of him just being a kinky pervert with only sex on his mind.
Reviewer Responses:
Ox King : I'm glad you like my stories and never fear. The only way my stories will go unfinished is if my computer blows up on me. Then we might run into problems unless I can get to a library and upload from there.
KogasAngel: Thank you for the compliments! And I must admit, I drooled a bit the first time I saw a picture of Kuronue. Ah tall, dark, handsome.. I must stop. As for a Youko/Sess/Kag triangle, it would be a possibility. But if I did manage to find a plot bunny with that set up it would likely be set up in the past only so the only other YYH characters that might be found in it would be Hiei. I'll think on it and see what I can come up with ;) As for the hits with no reviews, I'd say we chase the people around hounding them until they reviewed but I dunno if it would do any good lol
Lady_Banshee_999 : This one will be Kag/Kur only. I might be persuaded to do a Kag/Hiei/Kur triangle in the future. I'm sure one of these evil plot bunnies would enjoy something like that. I'm hoping my muses come back as well, if you see them please direct them this way. I promise better wages, I may even let them play with Hiei and Kurama (I locked them in my bedroom indefinitely *snickers*)
phoenixs_paiste : Yes, pleading does work on occasion, I'm just happy that I'm having a fairly easy time elaborating on this story with the other three stories at a stand still. If I get writers block on this one as well I will end up going insane! As for everyones reaction when they find out there bonded, I think what's going to be more interesting is Kagome's reaction when she finds out they bonded. I'm altering it slightly from the original one shot. I'm guessing she's not going to be terribly amused at the start but I haven't decided yet. I'm evil and like to torment my characters so there is no telling what's going to pop up in my demented mind when I write that chapter Hehehe..
Arbor : Go ahead and write an IY-YYH crossover, I would definitely enjoy reading! I have a feeling I'm going to break down soon and order the series on dvd. Then I just have to tear the tv away from every one else. I'll work on perfecting my version of Hiei's death glare so I can use it when they protest the tv being used for anime research.
Thank you to everyone else who reviewed. Love to you all!
