Chapter 8
Inuyasha looked up in surprise when the girls hurried back into the clearing. Sango had just left not more than ten minutes ago and they were back already. What bothered him worse was the look of concern that was on Sango's face. It took a lot to work her up. If he had any doubts before that something was wrong, all doubt was dispelled when both young women sat within easy touching distance of Miroku.
A small twinge of jealousy flared to life but he quickly squashed it. If there was something wrong Kagome should come to him for protection right? It was then that he realized that it was kind of hard for her to do so when he was perched more than thirty feet up in a tree. He should be down there with her, instead of her being so close to the monk. While Miroku adored Sango he was not above attempting to feel Kagome up and Inuyasha had enough trouble keeping a hold of his temper when the monk started groping. It was best to avoid potential problems.
His mind made up he jumped down out of the tree and seated himself down by the fire. To his relief Kagome abandoned her spot by Miroku and sat down beside him. They sat in silence, the girls watching each other and the guys watching the girls waiting for one of them to tell them what was going on. When it became obvious that Kagome wasn't going to say anything Sango took it upon herself to explain to the guys what was going on.
Two pairs of crimson eyes watched the group with intense curiosity. One of the watchers was concealed in the darkness beyond camp. He had been careful to mask his presence from the occupants of the camp site. He was a master of stealth and ruthless, he had to be in order to survive the trials he had been forced to endure since birth. But yet, his gaze held no malice towards the group before him. He was merely curious, he had felt the girls energy yesterday and decided to follow them. He had nothing better to do at the moment at any rate.
He found they were hunting the shards of the Shikon jewel, a powerful trinket that could easily fall into the wrong hands. He was also aware of the dark hanyou that sought the pieces though he had never had any dealings with him. He had little use for those such as Naraku who was willing to augment their power through the use of the jewel. He had no problem with seeking an increase to your powers. His issue with the jewel was the power came without cost to the bearer. There was no discipline involved in obtaining and wielding that power.
He had of course enhanced his power when he had his Jagan implanted but the cost had been high. The implantation had nearly killed him, and the power struggle between his mind and the eye had been intense. The pain had nearly been unbearable, but he had survived and now he had complete control over it. As he reflected on his past the voices of the group below drifted towards him snapping him out of his memories.
“So you're telling me that all the worry was simply because Kagome had a bad feeling?”
The disbelief in the Hanyou's voice was obvious and Hiei nearly rolled his eyes at what he had said. If the hanyou was smart he would heed the girls gut instinct instead of brushing her off. He had no fondness for humans at all but he was certain the girls instincts were as good as his simply because of what she was. Her Miko powers would not steer her wrong when it came to danger lurking. In fact it was quite possible the bad feeling she was getting was because of his presence in the area.
“Inuyasha this is serious!”
“Feh, you've been acting off since before we left your house. Nothing bad has happened yet.”
Perhaps it wasn't him that she was sensing then, at least not totally for when he came across them they were quite a distance from any village. He was curious where she had come from, he clothing was certainly different than what he was accustomed to seeing a woman wear. It was almost as if she were attempting to pass herself off as a male, dressing in men's clothing.
“Fine Inuyasha just forget anything was said, you're right as usual.”
Her tone turned bitter and she got up walking away from the group. Hiei questioned the girls sanity for a moment. If the feeling was as bad as she had said then she should say with the main group. Fortunately for her she didn't go far though, well within hearing distance of the camp.
“Stupid wench get your ass back here!”
“SIT!”
Hiei kicked up an eyebrow at the display of control that the girl had over the hanyou. Inuyasha certainly had a lot to learn about women if he hoped to hold onto this girl for any real length of time. Even he knew calling the one you loved a stupid wench was asking for trouble. Watching the girl get up again with a look of fury he reminded himself once again to never get involved in a relationship. It was definitely too much trouble to involve yourself with. It was almost laughable picturing him involved with someone, there would be bloodshed before the end of the first day. It was almost guaranteed.
Inuyasha glared at the girl as she came back into camp. The subduing spell had just worn off. If he were smart he would have kept his mouth shut as soon as he saw the look on her face. She was quite thoroughly pissed off at him at that moment, but Inuyasha was not in a particularly bright frame of mind at the moment.
“It's about time you started doing what I tell you to do. Now sit down here by me, I'll protect you from your own imagination.”
Hiei smirked, the hanyou seemed determined to set the girl off. He wondered how she would handle it. Sure, she had gotten mad the first time he mouthed off to her but if she was like most humans she would eventually break down under the treatment the hanyou was giving to her at the moment.
A surprisingly doglike growl emitted from the girl as she stood straight glaring at Inuyasha. How dare he?! They had been working so well together to! She couldn't believe he was reverting back to his old behavior. She didn't have to put up with that crap!
“Ohhhhh I have no desire whatsoever to Sit anywhere next to you! You arrogant jerk! Leave me alone Inuyasha, I swear if you come near me at all the rest of the night I am going home!”
Hiei watched in amusement as Inuyasha plummeted to the ground once again as the girl stormed past him. He noted with approval that before she left she still had the presence of mind to arm herself even if it was only with a bow. He had seen firsthand the power she could pour into the arrows when need be. There wasn't anything besides him nearby that would be of any real danger that she couldn't handle.
He was unsure of why exactly it was that he decided to follow her when she made her way through the forest. He followed silently behind her through the trees while she plunged onwards towards the hot springs. He wondered if she would even notice his presence if he hadn't masked himself with how mad she was at the moment. Probably not he decided. The girl needed to get her act together and soon if she was to be of any use in battle with Naraku.
She sat down on a rather large rock with the bow laid across her lap. She was silent for several long moments before heaving a sigh. Hiei was beyond bored by then and was ready to leave to find a suitable place to rest for the night when her voice called out softly to him.
“I know you are there. Why are you following me?”
He dropped out of the tree he had been standing in and stood before her. She frowned slightly at him as she took in his appearance. He wasn't very tall, perhaps about five feet with a lean but muscular build. He was clothed in solid black with the exception of a white scarf and the white bandana that covered his Jagan eye. His hair stood up and for a moment she wondered if he had gelled it before she remembered exactly where she was. There was an unusual starburst of white in it, she contemplated running her fingers through his hair to see how soft it was but she refrained when she saw the glare he was giving her.
Hiei saw her frown and immedietly assumed the worst. He didn't come all the way out here to be judged by a silly human girl who ran off because she was upset. And here he had thought she was better than the rest of the human population considering how she treated the hanyou and the kitsune kit. He decided he was obviously mistaken.
He turned to leave but her voice stopped him once more, again he wasn't certain why. Perhaps it was because her tone held no hint of condemnation in it.
“Wait.”
“Why?”
“Why have you been following me?”
Hiei wasn't going to give her an answer to that question because honestly he didn't know himself. Instead he asked her a question of his own.
“How did you know I was there?”
“I felt you.”
That she had felt him was disturbing to him but not surprising really. Miko powers were hard to hide from, especially when you were dealing with the level of power that this girl had.
“Hn.”
“You've been following us since yesterday haven't you?”
Her only answer was a glare in her direction. Obviously her stalker was not the very talkative sort. She pushed on, hoping to get some sort of conversation from him while she tested him out with her aura to familiarize herself with it. Obviously if he wanted the jewel or her he would have already acted upon the chance he had.
“My name is Kagome, what is yours?”
He still didn't answer but he narrowed his eyes dangerously at her when he felt her testing him out. He shifted into a more defensive stance waiting to see what you intended on doing when she discovered what he was.
She sucked her breath in quickly when she discovered he was made of opposing elements, Fire and Ice. She had spoken with Sango once about forbidden pairings between demons and here one was, standing in front of her. To her knowledge all offspring of such pairings were destroyed shortly after birth. By all rights he shouldn't be alive. He had to be powerful in order to have survived into adulthood and not have fallen prey to the forces which dominated his very existence.
“You must be very strong indeed.”
“Your point is?”
“It was just an observation. I'm not going to attack you if that is what you are worried about.”
Hiei wasn't overly concerned about any attack she could deal to him. Unless she got very lucky with an arrow he had nothing to fear. His speed would keep her well away from him if she went on the offensive.
“Shouldn't you be heading back to your group?”
“Not yet, I'd rather talk to you.”
He was a bit surprised that she would want to talk to him especially since he wasn't exactly the talkative type. The girl's open and friendly nature would easily be here downfall if she wasn't careful.
“Are you blind to danger girl?”
“No, I know you aren't a danger to me.”
It was irritating that she would so easily dismiss him.
“Don't be so sure of that.”
“If you were going to hurt me you would have done so already. No, the danger is coming from somewhere else.”
Hiei searched with his Jagan once again and felt the faintest trace of magic being used. A growl reverberated through his chest making her jump slightly. He felt the chuckle that reverberated through Naraku's chest as he was watching their meeting through Kanna's mirror.
If there was one thing Hiei despised more than cowards like Naraku it was the same cowards that spied on matters that they had no business being in. With a snarl he reached forth, the power of the Jagan surging from him. He send a mind blast towards Naraku. He heard the shriek of pain echoing through the link before all trace of Naraku was gone from the area.
Reviewer responses:
Kura-kun's-lovr: I am in love with your stories, I eagerly await every update that you put up. Though it would be very difficult for me to pick out a favorite, you have so many I am in love with. I'm extremely happy you like my stories and I'd love to do the Kag/Kur/Kenshin triangle but I'm sort of stuck without having any knowledge at all of Kenshin. So it will probably be a long while before I get the courage up to attempt that one.
nrok829: I greatly appreciate the offer and I would love to take you up on it. I will attempt to get to another computer soon to answer your email seeing as this one won't allow me to compose. Hopefully in the next day or so I can get back to you on it. Thank you ever so much! :)
Arbor: I had much fun speaking with you on AIM, I am going to get to work on that story within the next couple of days. I wouldn't be surprised if I get it going tonight, we'll see what happens. I'd really like to get to the point where Kurama finally meets Kag before I venture into a new one though. And you're right, while Koenma may not have his act totally together I doubt he'd miss Kagome's energy for long. It just made sense that they'd be monitoring her to me :)
Rabid: Ah well, I'll continue talking to you this way instead then :-D As for Youko's sudden display of anger it's something that honestly bothers me about a lot of fics. He's portrayed as a ruthless killer, showing little emotion but we never actually see him furious. A bit upset yes, but almost never to the point of rage that I can easily picture coming from him. As for the computers angry aura…. 0.0 Perhaps making him angry wasn't such a great idea after all lol
To everyone else: Thanks for the reviews. Keep them coming please!
