Chapter 10

Far from the campsite where Inuyasha and the others were staying Naraku pace. To say he was agitated would be a gross understatement. The puppet had failed, all due to that damnable hanyou Inuyasha. If he had been even five seconds slower he would have succeeded in killing the girl. As they say though, if at first you don't succeed, try again.

He had several plans, it was just setting them into motion. He had been reluctant to use them before now since he wanted to learn as much as he could about the Miko. He was curious, just like everyone else. Where did she come from? Where did she get the unusual items that she carried around with her? Where did she disappear to for days at a time? These were all questions that burned through his mind.

That was where his little spies had come in. Handy they were, the Saimyoushu. The shard detecting group hadn't even known that they were being watched constantly. And now he had his answers. The girl was from somewhere in the future and the old well was her way home. That had been the driving reason behind this attack. He had plans to jump through time. But the damnable girl had to be out of the way.

He had no doubt that the bitch would pursue him into her time if he were to go into the future. He could pass off as human without difficulty unlike Inuyasha. And since there were no demons that she knew of meant that there would be no one to oppose him in his quest for domination. He could handle anything the humans threw at him. But first the Priestess had to die.

Naraku smirked cruelly, there was a way to kill two birds with one stone now that he thought about it. He would assassinate the Miko and it was likely Inuyasha would perish as well. Then he would go to the future and begin conquering all of Japan. Nothing would stop him.

He looked over to the boy who stood motionless at the opposite end of the room. Soon he would have no further need him but in the meantime he could prove to be useful. He beaconed to the child. Lifeless brown eyes gazed back at him as the boy crossed the room silently. Kohaku kneeled before his Lord and awaited his instructions.

“Summon Leiko, bring her to the castle. I have need of her services.”

“Yes Master Naraku.”

Kohaku turned and quickly left the room to do as his master bid of him. Naraku smiled, yes things would work perfectly from now on. He would not fail again.

Kagome rested uneasily on the hard ground. They had layered the sleeping bags for her in order to alleviate some of her discomfort. Sango had determined that she had fractured three of her ribs besides the burns from the Miasma. She was extremely reluctant to move the girl any more than necessary. Her breathing was labored but acceptable given her condition.

While she slept Shippou had carefully curled himself up next to her to help keep her warm. Inuyasha watched over her worriedly, guilt raging through him. He blamed her condition entirely on himself for failing to protect her. It was not a mistake that would be repeated.

“We need to move her Inuyasha. This isn't the ideal place to keep her and you know it.”

Inuyasha knew it all too well. But moving her was going to cause her even more pain. He sighed, it would be best to do it soon. Before she regained consciousness was preferable. He looked over to Sango and nodded before moving to help pack the camp back up. Sango was glad he wasn't going to fight her on this. Kagome would need to rest and recover before they could even think about resuming the shard hunt.

She looked over to Miroku and couldn't help but feel a wave of sadness come over her. This was just one more delay in slaughtering Naraku. Miroku's days were numbered and problems like this only made it more likely that the wind tunnel would suck him into the void. The thought of him dying made her heart ache. He saw the look she was giving him and smiled slightly. Even in the face of his death he was doing his best to keep upbeat about it all.

When camp had been broken, Inuyasha carefully picked the young Miko up and cradled her to his chest, mindful of her ribs. He set out at as quick of a pace as he could without jarring her. They were a good distance away from Kaede's village and their hut. It was likely to take them two full days of traveling to get there if they pushed it. He just hoped there were no further complications in the meantime.

It was approximately four hours later when Kagome stirred in her sleep, whimpering when Inuyasha came down on the ground rather hard. He looked down at her for a moment, being careful he didn't trip over anything while he was running. He knew they were going to need to stop soon for rest. While he was holding up fine he was certain that Kirara could use a break and Kagome would probably awaken soon.

He scented the air taking note of exactly where they were. They were about twenty minutes away from a campsite they had used on several occasions. It would be a good spot for them to rest for a while. It remained to be seen if they would be stopping for the rest of the day or if they were going to continue on towards the village. It all depended on how Kagome felt when she awoke.

Sango noted how Inuyasha's course veered off slightly to the right. It was apparent that he had a destination in mind and she was grateful. Kirara was tiring and she needed a break. It wasn't often that she carried three and never for long time periods. Added to it the pace Inuyasha was setting and you had one tired neko.

Through the entire trip Shippou had his eyes glued to Inuyasha. He was deathly afraid for Kagome. Kitsune's fed off of energy by nature and he had felt the energy that drained off of her. It was dark, laced with suffering. He had never experienced that level of pain in her in all of the time he had known her and it frightened him. He knew it would be a while before she was well again. Questions ran through his young mind. What would happen when they did get back to the village? Would Kagome go back to her own time to recover? He hoped that she would stay in the past with them, if she left there was no telling when she would come back.

He missed her whenever she left but he put up a brave front. He didn't want to make her feel any worse about things then she already did. He would be brave for her and make her proud. Long ago he had decided that he would become strong for her, to protect her whenever Inuyasha wasn't around, but it was at times like this he felt totally helpless.

His distress was apparent to his companions on Kirara for Miroku laid a hand on his small shoulder. He relaxed slightly, as the monk spread his calming influence through his body. It was similar to the feeling that he had whenever he was around Kagome. He could only figure that it was the holy energy they both possessed that was able to give off that feeling.

Inuyasha came to a sudden halt, careful not to jar the girl. He scanned the clearing carefully, making sure that it was unoccupied. There was no trace of anyone around, in fact they had been the last to use this particular site several weeks ago. That suited him fine, he didn't want to deal with any interruptions that night.

Kirara landed on the ground next to him and waited for Sango, Miroku and Shippou to climb off her back before she transformed into her smaller size. The sleeping bags were brought out once more and Kagome settled on top of them. Inuyasha could tell based on her heart rate and breathing pattern that she would awaken soon. He took one last look at her and disappeared knowing that the other three had the situation well in hand. He was going hunting. She was going to need something more nutritious to eat than just ramen in order to heal.

Miroku watched him disappear into the woods. It would seem that they were going to be left to their own devices for a while so it would be best if they got everything set up before Inuyasha's return. He dug through the yellow pack pulling out the cooking supplies that Kagome carried with her. Sango took it upon herself to go and gather firewood while Shippou and Kirara hovered over the miko, waiting for her to wake up.

Inuyasha returned about half an hour later with a small boar. He had already cleaned it before he brought it back to the camp so all that needed to be done was cook it. Sango already had the fire going and quickly spitted the boar, the smell of roasting meat filled the air shortly after.

Shippou was the first to notice Kagome awaken and he put a small hand on her shoulder when she attempted to sit up. Her ribs screamed in protest at the movement and she didn't resist the small kitsune's attempt to keep her laying down. She could sit up later when she had someone to help her up.

“How do you feel Kagome?”

His worried voice penetrated the haze of pain that she was in and brought her back to reality. She took stock of her injuries, noting the power that coursed through her. Untrained though it might be, her miko powers were starting the healing process. With any luck if it continued as it was going her ribs would be fine in a week or so. But she wasn't going to get her hopes up too high, there was no telling when that power would decide to quit working for her.

“Hurts to breath but I'll be okay.”

“Are you thirsty? I'll get you something to drink if you are.”

He was trying so hard to make her feel better, she could tell. He was doing his best to seem cheerful and keep the worry out of his voice. But she could see right through it, living with someone for so long gave you that ability. She was proud of him taking charge like he was. Honestly Inuyasha was proud of him as well even if he wouldn't admit it to anyone. He was impressed with how attentive the kitsune was to the girls needs.

While Shippou retrieved water for her Inuyasha helped her to sit up. He sat behind her, allowing the girl to lean back against him. He didn't mind being used as a pillow, especially in this instance. Miroku and Sango just watched them quietly, pleased at how close the two had become. Miroku evaluated her with a critical eye. He could see the energy flow around her and was pleased. Her energy was indeed healing her but he expected that she would spend the vast majority of the next week asleep. Using healing energy on broken bones tended to do that to a person.

Shippou returned shortly with the requested water and handed her the cup. Kagome frowned when she noticed the bandages on her arms but then remembered what the miasma had done to her. It was a painful experience that she had no desire to ever repeat in the future. Inuyasha seen where her gaze was directed and took the cup from her, gently bringing it to her lips so she could drink it. He didn't want her moving around too much anyway, it would only serve to increase the pain in her chest.

Afterwards she began to drift off to sleep once more, using his chest as a pillow. It was going to be an extremely long night.

Author's Notes: The time has arrived, for the dreaded scene where death reigns in this story. So loyal readers, you are warned! Next chapter is where the real fun begins, I've gone into enough detail I think on personalities and developing relationships. I'm sure there is more than one reader out there that is now yelling It's About Damned Time, Get On With It! I won't keep you all in suspense any longer. The next chapter will be out either tonight or tomorrow morning. I hope you all enjoy it. :)

Reviewer Responses:

There aren't as many this time, I'm wondering if I bored part of my readers to death. *pokes them*

Rabid: *Squeals and bounces around insanely* You've made my night with that, When I got to the end of your one shot all that was running through my mind was: This can't be the end! NOOOOOO! I anxiously await the updates to the story :-D I wouldn't worry about family too much, I constantly get weird looks and odd comments while I'm on the computer. No one is used to me laughing much so it's a shock when I read something and crack up laughing. You get used to them after a while. I'm thinking she is going to run into Hiei once more in the past before she goes home but I haven't decided yet. And as for the fight scene, have I mentioned I hate writing those? If not well, now everyone knows. I constantly leave someone out of the battle somehow, usually Shippou. So umm, he was on Kirara up in the air watching the fight in horror. Yeah, that's what he was doing. Yup.. Hmmm K.I.B and Y.I.B either one is a tasty visual. Then again so is H.I.B. Now I'm drooling… bah!

deafening silence: My muse told me to inform you that she takes you up on your offer of protection. When I get the others back they are going to be extremely jealous. I hope this chapter meets your approval as payment for your help with her. A sfor Hiei, I dunno it just seems to me he would have a twisted sense of humor so following Inuyasha's group around made sense to me, especially with some of the fights they get into with each other. So the curiosity aspect just fell right into place.

Niku: The time shall soon come, for that is another thing that lies in the next chapter. The gripping meeting, although don't expect much from Kagome to start off with, she's not going to be in that great of shape when she sees him. I'm sure Hiei is going to enjoy his little secret to the fullest much to Kurama's displeasure. Poor Kurama, I almost feel bad for him.

Golden_Fire_Goddess: To answer your question without giving a lot away, no Hiei will not be there when they initially meet but it won't be long before he shows up I promise. Sadly, Inuyasha is scheduled to perish in the next chapter. He won't have the chance to meet Kurama.

Shabopo: Thank you for your glowing review. I would also like to compliment you on your fic Stirrings. I believe I reviewed but in case I haven't I apologize. I love how you have portrayed Sesshoumaru, it's exactly how I have always imagined how he would actually be in his own household and interacting with others. The set up you have created is beautiful. Every chapter I get further pulled into it, you can feel every emotion that Kagome goes through. Keep up the great work, I look forward to your updates.

KogasAngel: well, here is one chapter I haven't yet started on the next one but I will momentarily. Does it still count as being posted tonight even if it is done after midnight but before the sun rises? Hmmm, anyway I hope you enjoy this one. The next will be out in a few hours I hope.

angel-demoness7: I plan on making Kag and Hiei fairly good friends but nothing too obvious. I want to try and keep him in character as much as possible so the interaction between the two will probably be very subtle. Thanks for reviewing :-)

Thank you to everyone who has reviewed!
